The prototype is wonderful! Looks like the more stylized designs we were thinking of making for our Itunear runs, speaking of which I was hoping you could give us some feedback on a thing or two. Firstly, the version of the Kiwi that we are currently in the midst of running through it's final shakedown runs is the KWI-RK, the Kiwi-Royal Kiwi, meant to be in service to the Monarchy of Itunear, it has the battletested Lamellar Armor plating, Double Heatsinks to keep the systems running cool even while running the mech at it's highest speeds with it's full Hundred ton carrying capacity in use, as well as a suite of communications devices able to broadcast the location of the mech and surrounding conditions to nearby or further away friendlies who may be in contact with said machine.

Lastly I was wondering if it would be possible for us at the new Zealand Mechwerks to licence Lotus Eater Industries designs for production? Of course we would do business only in Itunear should you request it but as well as this I was hoping for one, sort of unofficial favor.

We have a Platoons worth of Kiwi-01 Pilots, a group of twelve that is, who have been pestering us non-stop to ask if you would be willing to hire experienced Kiwi pilots to help train up cadres of future pilots should you choose the design. I hope to hear back from you soon.

I am glad to hear that you approve of our labs designs, as stylized as they may be. We here at Lotus Eater are excited about the prospect of working on future runs of these models of mech with your team at New Zealand Mechwerks.

Furthermore we here at Lotus Eater are very interested in the concept of the KWI-RK, seeing as the Itunear monarch has commissioned a mech that can travel to emergencies in the nick of time, after that whole Nabu Island incident earlier this year. We believe with your help we can produce his Majesty with a superior model before those scoundrels at Insta Tech can even begin blueprinting a design. As far as we can see the KWI-RK seems like the perfect mech for the job, though the specifics can be laid out at a later date soon. Preferably in person.

The prospect of licensing Lotus Eater designs outside of our country is foreign to us, but as a company looking to broaden our horizons we are more than open to the idea. We'll send over the necessary contracts and documents no later than Monday.

We would be more than happy to accommodate a stay for your pilots. While at this time we cannot promise full time positions we can guarantee the temporary positions to educate trainees here on your unique mech models. Lotus Eater will also provide for housing for the duration of their stay and full access to our facilities. We hope that they enjoy their stay here in Itunear for the duration of their visit.

Sure it's weird when they talk sympathetically to broken spaceships or try to pet every lifeform that scans as non-toxic. It's even a little weird that just existing in the same place as them for long enough seems to make them care about you. But if you're hurt, if you're trapped, if you need someone to fetch help? You really want a human. Twelve authors provide their perspectives on human ingenuity and usefulness as we try to find our place among the stars. From battletested to brokenhearted, humans are capable of amazing things. Humans Wanted shows not only what we are, but how awesome we can be.

The Scene

Oh, this one is such a treat! From the madcap goofiness of DesJardin’s Human Engineering to the deep and poignant exploration of colonialism in Becker’s The Dowager, from the delightfully Pythonesque parody of bureaucracy in Thomas’s New Union Requirement to the shivering awe and terror of Runstad’s Brightened Star, Ascending Dawn, every story in this collection is a little bundle of wonders. In this anthology, the authors really worked at getting us outside of our own human boxes and letting us see the universe through other eyes: amphibious eyes, eyes that see UV light, compound eyes, and eyes that see eternity. From these vantage points, we can learn about ourselves, each other, and maybe a little bit about empathy. And that’s what we need so badly right now.

The Crowd

Characterization

Every story in this motley crew has people you’ll be interested to meet. By far, the most intense and poignant exploration of character was showcased in Dowager, a painfully intimate tale between a colonizing alien on hospice care and her colonized human servant. My favorite cast shows up in WWHD, which was just delightful. I particularly appreciated the ensemble of the aforementioned Human Engineering, along with the characters in Sidekick (which made me happy cry) and No Way This Could Go Wrong (which made me laugh loud enough to scare the cat).

Writing Style

Each of these styles is different, but each one serves its purpose well: to illuminate, to illustrate cultural points, to entertain. And maybe even to open our eyes.

As usual, I’m not diving deep on any specific story. But what I can say is that every plot in this collection is solid, well done, and perfectly timed.
