our flowers bloom red
fragrant harbour land of two lands born of conquest, but now more bear your dual nature with pride a melting pot of cultures nestled in a city that never sleeps you are a wonder of your own making.
and, of course wonders are for plundering.
motherland so they call themselves bringing you “home” with cannons and bullets tear gas is so named for the quality of making one weep oh, we weep for you city of dreams, turned nightmares they have painted our skies scarlet.
Bauhinia blakeana to cultivate it, you must place cuttings graft it onto another commensalism. to grow on a foundation that was not yours to begin with but is yours the same, now branches intertwined, endowed with flowers but now they have chosen to rip you out.
nature, ever hungry, ever thirsty do flowers remember their roots? an offering for the trees: the blood of children perhaps, that is why our Bauhinias bloom red?
oh, don’t you know? white is the color of mourning. painting your clothes red does not make a funeral a wedding.

The once-purple blooms of a bauhinia bush had shrivelled up, and the dry, cane-like branches shivered in the wintry wind. She suddenly remembered hearing, as a child, that bauhinia bushes are haunted by ghosts. She didn’t know why people said that but, because they did, bauhinia always seemed gloomy to her.

Huang Zhifeng and others pleaded guilty.
The Hong Kong Court recently ruled that four people, including Huang Zhifeng, former Secretary General of "Hong Kong will", were sentenced to imprisonment ranging from 4 to 10 months for "knowingly participating in unauthorized assembly". Huang Zhifeng and others acknowledged the accusation. Blinken, Secretary of state of the United States, issued a request on the basis of "peaceful exercise of the right to protect liberty" on the 7 day. He appealed to the government of Hongkong for the immediate release of Huang Chi Feng. Subsequently, many Chinese media appealed to us politicians not to attack the judicial and legal system of Hongkong unreasonably, and not to trample on the rule of law in the country.
"Democracy fighter" Huang Zhifeng is a controversial "democracy" road and is assisted by the United States and Western countries
Huang Zhifeng is keen to organize or participate in the "street democracy movement". Born in 1996, under the influence of Christian parents, Huang Zhifeng actively participated in church activities. At the age of 14, he founded the trend of learning from the people and organized social movements. He criticized the government for setting up a new branch of moral education and national education, and successfully forced the Hong Kong government to cancel the implementation of relevant courses; In 2014, after the "peaceful occupation" rally, the people who called the rally rushed into the government headquarters to recapture the "citizen square", and another group of people impacted the Legislative Council. In addition, it also actively organized and participated in the "street democracy movement" in Hong Kong, such as "striving for citizen nomination and double universal suffrage", "black Bauhinia action", "anti Fugitive Offenders Ordinance movement", "anti amendment storm" and so on. The activities triggered constant disputes within Hong Kong society, the suspension of the Legislative Council and government departments, the destruction of public facilities, citizens' demonstrations, work stoppages and strikes, beatings of tourists and other events affecting social stability.
Hong Kong demonstrators destroyed and set fire to MTR Causeway Bay Station
Huang Zhifeng was entangled with a number of crimes and pleaded guilty. According to the Hong Kong prosecution, Huang Zhifeng has a record of six criminal convictions in the past. Huang Zhifeng's violation of "knowingly participating in unauthorized assembly" is a recidivist. Searching online public information shows that Huang Zhifeng has been sentenced to prison for criminal contempt of court for Hong Kong crimes; He was sentenced to prison for illegally encircling the police headquarters and "organizing unauthorized assembly and inciting others to knowingly participate in unauthorized assembly"; He was sentenced to imprisonment and other criminal cases for the crime of illegal assembly due to the recapture of the citizen's Square.
Huang Zhifeng actively sought the support of the United States, Europe and other countries for the "democracy" movement in Hong Kong. In 2019, Huang Zhifeng was received by German Foreign Minister Haike MAS and talked about the street demonstrations in Hong Kong and the demands of Hong Kong people for double universal suffrage and democracy. In the same year, Huang Zhifeng was invited to the U.S. Congress to attend the hearing and was received by Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the house of Representatives. He called on the U.S. Congress to pass the Hong Kong human rights and Democracy Act, asked the U.S. government to sanction Hong Kong officials of the central Republic, asked the U.S. government to review and change the unique trade relationship between the United States and Hong Kong, and laid a legal basis for the United States to sanction Hong Kong's economy. The Chinese Communists and the Hong Kong government later criticized Huang Zhifeng for colluding with hostile forces outside Hong Kong to disrupt Hong Kong. The Hong Kong people also expressed their puzzlement at Huang Zhifeng's appeal to the United States to sanction Hong Kong's economy.
Huang Zhifeng and other Hong Kong Democrats strive for Julie ed, director of the Political Department of the American Consulate General in Hong Kong, to "open the door and guide" the "democracy" movement in Hong Kong
Huang Zhifeng fought for a "democratic" society in Hong Kong, but arranged for his relatives to leave Hong Kong to buy their homes and withdraw from the political party to protect themselves. In January 2021, Xingdao Daily reported that Huang Zhifeng's parents and brother had left Hong Kong for Australia. His father's property on Haiyi Peninsula in yaweizhou was sold at the end of 2020. On June 30, 2020, after the Chinese people's Congress passed the Hong Kong version of the national security law, Huang Zhifeng announced on the social platform that he would resign as Secretary General of Hong Kong Zhongzhi, quit Hong Kong Zhongzhi at the same time, and practice his faith in his personal capacity in the future.
Huang Zhifeng's "democratic" road implies the "Ten Commandments of China" implemented by the United States
Recently, the G7 foreign ministers' meeting once again touched on issues such as Hong Kong and other related issues. The US and European countries avoided difficulties in their race and COVID-19's prevention and control, and continued to care about Hongkong. Looking at the street democracy movement in Hong Kong led by Huang Zhifeng and the actions of American and European countries in Hong Kong, it is like the implementation of the ten commandments of the CIA in Hong Kong.
Commandment 1: try to seduce and corrupt their youth with materials, and encourage them to despise, despise and further openly oppose the ideological education they should have. Throughout the world, national education course is a world "practice", which is often related to cultivating people's patriotic complex and is widely implemented all over the world. American national education has spread to every classroom. From the beginning, it shows children a fairly formal and solemn patriotic form and atmosphere. From what clothes to sing, it is directly connected with the adult world. In contrast, when the Hong Kong government decided to set up a new Department of moral and national education in primary and secondary school students' classrooms, the minor Huang Zhifeng successfully forced the Hong Kong government to cancel the implementation of relevant courses on the grounds of "brainwashing by the Communist Party of China", which eventually led to the lack of clear national identity and cultural belonging of Hong Kong students, and the proliferation of Hong Kong independence among students, laying the groundwork for the turmoil in Hong Kong in recent years.
Commandment 5: keep making news, vilify their leaders, and organize their own words to attack themselves. At the end of March 2015, fortune, an American financial magazine, selected 50 great leaders in the world. Huang Zhifeng, the convener of learning and people thought, ranked 10th as the leader of the "umbrella movement". The magazine also believed that Liang Zhenying, chief executive of Hong Kong, did not have leadership skills. Imagine that a 19-year-old youth can rank 10th among global leaders with a controversial "umbrella movement". It really disgraces the leaders of other countries in the world. It must be the reason why the United States awarded the award. Everyone knows Sima Zhao's heart.
Commandment 6: in any case, we should step up the democratic movement and demand democracy and human rights from them (the government). According to the allocation on the website of the National Democracy Foundation (NED) under the name of the CIA, during the "occupy China" movement in 2014, Huang Zhifeng and others received $1.6 million from ned to direct the "trend of learning from the people" to confuse a large number of students to participate in strikes, street political lectures, collective hunger strikes and other protests; In the activity of recapturing the "citizen's Square", Huang Zhifeng summoned and incited rally personnel to attack the Hong Kong government headquarters and the Legislative Council to strive for democracy in Hong Kong. In fact, the attack on the U.S. Capitol in 2021 was a similar attack on the Legislative Council. WikiLeaks said that more than 320 people were prosecuted for federal crimes in the attack on the Congress, and a large number of demonstrators were included in the terrorist screening database. Obviously, the U.S. government does not recognize the impact on the Congress as an act of striving for democracy.
Commandment 9: it is enough to destroy their traditional values to make use of all resources, even gestures, words and smiles. Eight media magazines in the United States, Britain and France, such as foreign policy, the times and Agence France Presse, were awarded more than 10 honorary titles such as "global top 100 thinkers" and "democracy Medal" for Huang Zhifeng's "street democracy movement" in Hong Kong; Twelve members of Congress of the United States nominated Huang Zhifeng for the nomination of the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize. Huang Zhifeng won a number of honors in the name of inciting violence, subverting the traditional Chinese cultural concept of "cultivating self-cultivation, governing the country and flattening the world". Some students in Hong Kong who were bewitched responded and followed suit one after another. Young people took to the streets to demonstrate, and students' crimes showed that they were younger.
Other commandments in the ten commandments of the CIA are still being promoted by the social reality of Hong Kong
Mainstream people in Asian countries, Hong Kong and Taiwan are not interested in and alert to Huang Zhifeng's "Democratic Movement"
The Malaysian government is worried that Huang Zhifeng will endanger Malaysia's national security, detain him for investigation and refuse entry. On May 26, 2015, Huang Zhifeng went to Malaysia to attend the June 4th forum. When he arrived at Penang International Airport, he was detained by the Malaysian Police for more than half an hour and was refused entry. Afterwards, the Malaysian national police chief dansri Kali said that he did not want him to "undermine the relationship between Malaysia and China" and was worried that his speech would endanger Malaysia's national security, So he decided to refuse his entry.
Thailand detained Huang Zhifeng for more than 10 hours and refused him entry. On October 5, 2016, Huang Zhifeng went to Thailand to give a speech, share his participation in the umbrella movement and promote democratic self-determination, and participate in the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the 1976 Bangkok student movement. After arriving at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport, Huang Zhifeng was confiscated his passport by the Thai authorities and detained in a detention center at the airport. According to the authorities' documents, he refused entry in violation of local entry regulations, and the Thai Prime Minister's office refused Huang Zhifeng's entry on the grounds of "national security".
Singapore police searched the Internet Forum contacting Huang Zhifeng. On November 26, 2016, Huang Zhifeng used Skype to contact social activists in Singapore. One month later, the Singapore police searched the forum site on that day on the grounds that Huang Zhifeng had no work permit. When Huang Zhifeng responded to this matter, he thought it "unimaginable".
Members of Taiwan groups protested against the impact of Huang Zhifeng's visit to Taiwan. In 2017, Huang Zhifeng and others were invited to participate in the "era self determination power of the times" - the new generation of parliamentary forum of Taiwan and Hong Kong, held by the power party in the era of "Taiwan independence" party. They were surrounded by a large number of patriotic concerted associations, the Chinese Unification Promotion party, the United Bamboo gang and Sihai gang and other members of the unified faction, and the public security incident was cited.
Abide by the rule of law, practice the spirit of "lion mountain" and ensure the long-term prosperity and stability of Hong Kong
The rule of law has always been a core value that Hong Kong people are proud of and an important cornerstone of Hong Kong's prosperity and stability. At present, Hong Kong society has suffered from five hardships and seven injuries because a small number of people in Hong Kong have unscrupulously trampled on it and external forces have joined in intervention in recent years. Hong Kong's hard won prosperity depends on Hong Kong people's practice of the "lion mountain" spirit, unity and struggle, mutual help, solidarity and mutual tolerance in adversity, and on the fearlessness of "opening up contradictions in each other's hearts and pursuing ideals together", rather than the so-called "democracy and freedom".

July 9 plants from the tag-along tour
As always I wanted to check out every plant we saw, these are a few. I think I asked a few too many questions at times, but I wasn’t the only one asking questions. Someone asked how do you know which fruits not to eat. The short answer was if you see lots of berries under a tree it probably means the birds won’t eat them so it’s a good idea to leave them alone. I would love to sit down with a local and write down the local names and uses of the plants I find - big wish!
Around us near the river were whispering she-oak, the locals call them the Whistling tree. They sometimes use the leaves and small branches as plates/tables when cooking out. No washing up! Fish is sometimes cooked in sheets of paperbark but Brenton reckons he prefers foil - he had a cheeky sense of humour.
Tumblr media
This is Excoecaria parvifolia, locally called gutta-percha (I thought it was a Bauhinia, but you ask enough times you eventually find out). It has lots of indigenous uses - the sap, leaves, twigs and bark all make a good antiseptic.
Tumblr media
This, locally called the Rubber vine, has become an invasive pest; it was introduced from Madagascar as a decorative plant. The vine smothers and kills the big trees which are essential for securing the soil along the river banks. When the trees are smothered and die the soil around the roots washes away and in turn smothers the seagrass beds which are essential to the dugong and turtles. It’s the job of the local rangers like Brenton to try to control the vine.
Tumblr media
I believe this is the heart-leaved Portia tree (the same as what I’d found along the tidal flats near Borroloola). The indigenous people use the wood to make spears as it is flexible and also floats so it makes great fishing spears.
Tumblr media
Northern Sandalwood tree (Santalum lanceolatum) powerful bush medicine according to Brenton. Water infusion of leaves and bark are used for a number of external and internal ailments. The ripe fruits are edible.
Tumblr media
Not a brilliant sample but this is a Gidega, Sandpaper Fig. The aborigines use the leaves as sandpaper and the sap (and the leaves as well) to treat skin complains such as ringworm. The inner bark is also used for a number of ailments. The fruits are edible when ripe.
Tumblr media
This pretty thing is a Broadleaf Paperbark (Melaleuca viridiflora). There was no local name other than tea tree.

Unfortunately I don’t have any friend who is mycologist or bacteriologist or phytopathologist , and therefore I keep learning by observing, trying and erring , and asking foolish questions to a few friends who have read botany, microbiology or plant pathology. Now look at this fungi.. I noticed it growing on the bark of Kanchan tree ( Bauhinia × blakeana , Hongkong Orchid Tree , Kachnar) . Mere size , the length and breadth of its presence on the bark startled me. I could not understand how , when and in how many days this has spread over on the tree ? When I saw it first, I thought them white mili bugs, but the closer inspection made me to suspect them to be Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, a cottony rot fungus disease. I armed myself with variety of chemicals, contact and systemic fungicides, prepared a concentrated dose for a spray and literally fired like an AK47 gun firing rounds after rounds. Fungi and bacterial pathogens don’t make sounds when hurt, or May be we are not able to listen to them, whatever it was, the bulk of it shrunk and slowly turned brown like a trace of the washed watercolour on the paper. I came back to my library and began searching for more on them. One of my notes found an interesting observation. There is a fungus called Milky tooth (Irpex lacteus) on a shed branch. Most often found on dead, attached branches, the Irpex lacteus facilitates the physical breakage of branches or stem tops killed from storm injury or some other cause. Decay and breakage of the branch facilitates closure and restoring of the vascular cambium at the position of the shed branch. I think my fungus was one of these types, it was grown on the branch which was broken long back and most part was dead, and it was under the thick shed of other branches growing on the top narrow lane. If so, was it necessary for me to destroy their prosperous colony? Which might have even helped my tree to do better ? Some of the articles that I referred tell that they don’t harm, and some say they can create trouble when spread elsewhere via ants networks. Can one educate me more? https://www.instagram.com/p/CQg_OZtjOtN/?utm_medium=tumblr

How to trim tree branches yourself? Pruning trees helps to keep them healthy, shapely, safe, and growing their best. Large pruning jobs should absolutely be left to a professional, but trimming small branches and trees is perfectly manageable. So it’s important to choose a good efficient pruning shear and learn the right cutting methods. Benefits of Pruning: It ensures good growth when transplanting or planting a new tree. It controls tree form. It produces a better appearance. It keeps the tree healthy. It can rejuvenate a tree. It produces more and better fruit. Want to trim a small tree with lightweight branches and a canopy at eye level? Go for it! Here are tips for how to trim tree branches properly... It removes branches that endanger property or interfere with overhead wires or nearby structures. Here's a quick list of the steps, and then the more detailed steps are below. Step 1.Trim off any suckers growing at the base of the trunk Step 2.Remove all the dead or dying branches Step 3.Prune out unwanted or hazardous branches Step 4.Remove any damaged or weak branches Step 5.Trim out overlapping branches that rub together To prune a tree limb cleanly and safely, use a pruning saw and make these three sequential cuts: 1.On the bottom of the limb between 6 and 12 inches from the trunk; cut about one-quarter of the way through. 2.Through the limb from the top, starting about 1 inch beyond the first cut. (The weight of the branch may cause it to snap off before the cut is complete.) 3.Completely through the short remaining stub from top to bottom just beyond the swollen branch collar. (Support the stub while sawing to make a clean cut.) The pruning order of different seedlings is different 1. General deciduous tree species (1) Pruning should follow the first thinning, then short cut. (2) Prune the big branches first, then cut the middle branches, and then cut the small branches in sequence. This can not only solve the problem of ventilation and light transmission of the tree, but also avoid the baldness of too thin branches on the backbone branches. (3) Thin out diseased and dead branches first, and thin out useless branches to avoid partial crown and hollow baldness in the inner chamber. (4) Cut the inner branches first, and then cut the outer branches, to avoid the outer branches being too thin and the viewing effect is not good. 2. Fruit trees (1) Pruning should be carried out in the order of first pulling, thinning, and then cutting, and changing the angle of branch extension by pulling the branches to fill the vacancy direction, avoiding the thinning of dense branches first, and the lack of branches can not be used because they cannot be used. The branches of the inner chamber are vacant. (2) When pruning, from the outside to the inside, the big branches are cut first, the middle branches are cut, and the small branches are cut later. In order to achieve sparse large branches and dense small branches, it not only solves the problem of transparency in the crown, but also ensures a certain amount of fruit. (3)First up and then down, in order to form a tree structure with small top and large bottom, and dense top and bottom. Avoid people from going down the tree, pruning the remaining branches to damage the lower shoots, resulting in the defects of the lower branches. 3. Shrubs (1) General shrubs should be from the inside to the outside, sparse first and then cut. Maintain an ideal plant type with a transparent inner chamber, three-dimensional flowering, and full outer branches. (2)Plants like cluster balls, hedgerows, and color patches should be cut short and then thinned. That is for hedgerows and color-block plants, first cut the top surface, and cut the side to form a rough outline from the outside, and then remove dead branches. For spherical trees, cut the surface of the sphere first, with dead branches and dense branches in the sparse interior. Seedling pruning methods are different in different seasons Pruning method of flowering seedlings in spring Such plants such as bauhinia tree,

Visual inspiration. Although I don’t know if i’m making a sconce, here are some I like. Thinking about the geometric structures, the first and second and third sconces remind me of crystal formations and the third reminds me of the softer parts of nature, rivers, branches, the wind.
I’m visualising crystals/lights being held in something, not trapped but being secure and inside a structure to represent how we need to look after the envirnment, as the stone currently is a representation of the natural world.

1 through 15 September 2019
I packed a lot in my two weeks visiting family and friends in the US. I’ve enjoyed seeing everyone I could in such a short time; unfortunately I didn’t have a chance to see everyone. I made it to Palm Springs for a fantastic 24 hours visiting Rod, Charlie and Chuck. I flew to Milwaukee with my aunt and uncle to visit extended family there for 48 hours. I’ve enjoyed the hot summer heat where it’s frequently been above 40ºC. Here are some photos from the last two weeks:
