what did helmut say now?😭

That’s just starting the whole ‘Daniel is taking a seat away from a young driver’ convo again when Peter Bayer and Co have consistently said they’re aiming to no longer being a junior team. But hey, I’m taking consolation in the ‘this year we’re going with an experienced driver’ meaning he’s getting promoted next year

2025 will mark the 40th anniversary of Dionne Warwick’s cultural milestone single, “That’s What Friends Are For.” The one-off single, featuring the equally iconic Gladys Knight, Elton John, and Stevie Wonder, “That’s What Friends Are For,” was released as a charity single in October 1985 to support AIDS research. The song achieved monumental success and cemented Warwick’s legacy as not just a music icon but a significant figure in the history of AIDS advocacy.
Dionne Warwick emerged as a groundbreaking performer in the 1960s, her voice becoming the medium for the poignant lyrics of the songwriting duo Burt Bacharach and Hal David. With hits like “Walk On By” and “Say a Little Prayer,” she became synonymous with a refined pop and R&B style. As musical styles changed in the 1970s and 1980s, Warwick adapted to the changing musical landscape, dominated by Disco and the advent of MTV-oriented superstars.
youtube
The genesis of “That’s What Friends Are For” lies in its initial recording by Rod Stewart for the 1982 comedy movie “Night Shift.” Stewart’s version was in concert with the schmaltzy ballad sound that dominated pop radio at the time and went relatively unnoticed. Written by Burt Bacharach & Carole Bayer Sager, Warwick’s 1985 version was a rallying cry in the fight against AIDS and catapulted the song into music and AIDS history.
Featuring Gladys Knight, Elton John and Stevie Wonder and billed as Dionne & Friends, “That’s What Friends Are For” was released in October 1985, just a few weeks after the AIDS-related death of Rock Hudson, a beloved American Hollywood Legend. Hudson’s death marked a significant shift in America’s understanding of AIDS and song’s poignant message of friendship and unconditional love resonated with music listeners during a pivotal time.
Tumblr media
The proceeds of the platinum-selling “That’s What Friends Are For” were donated to the American Foundation for AIDS Research (AmFAR). Co-founded by Elizabeth Taylor in September 1985, one of AmFar’s first donations was a gift of $250,000 from Rock Hudson shortly before his death a month later. This gift, along with the amplification and monetary support by “That’s What Friends Are For,” AmFar has contributed to numerous breakthroughs that have extended and saved lives worldwide.
Dionne Warwick’s AIDS advocacy was not limited to this song. She became a vocal and visible advocate for AIDS research, education, and compassion. In March 1990 “That’s What Friends Are For” was performed by Warwick and her cousin Whitney Houston as the finale at the AIDS benefit That’s What Friends Are For: Arista Records 15th Anniversary Concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The historic event, later televised on CBS, raised Over $2.5 million for various AIDS organizations.
youtube
Dionne Warwick’s dedication to AIDS advocacy continued for years, making her a significant figure not only in music history but also in the history of social activism. Her efforts helped shift public perception of AIDS and brought greater awareness and resources to combat the crisis. Her career is a testament to the power of music not just to reflect the times but to shape them.
Tumblr media
Dionne Warwick is an enduring icon in both music and social activism. Praise her!

What to do with 10 trillion dollars
I spent way too much time actually answering a reddit question of "How would you spend 10 trillion dollars if you needed to in 20 years. You will die after 20 years." So, I figured I'd share it here.
With only $10 trillion dollars you can't stabilize greenhouse gases or get rid of fossil fuels, which are 13t and 44t respectively. I'm using a variety of sources, so don't expect citations.
I did slightly overpay for things, strategically, partially because I can only imagine doing the things I would do would make it more expensive than it would otherwise be. You'll see.
I'm presuming I don't get assassinated.
What you can do (I did the math) figures are in Billions:
Personal (2.44/10000):
1.44 on remaking 8 games as mid-line AAA games (I chose Legend of Dragoon, FF8, Witcher 1, and the Legacy of Kain series).
.214 on 50 years of housing and buying yourself a $130,000,000 home in NYC. Includes taxes, maintenance, and furniture.
.15 on household staff for 50 years, with at double the normal pay
.000327 to put 3 kids through the best pre-k and best college in the country
.664 setting up each of those 3 kids with their own equivalent home and staff setup
Public Service (4303/10000):
Big one out of the way. 2500bn in lobbying/buying up American politicians to enact structural reforms I want to see. You would think this would be way too much, since the presidential election in 2020 only had 14.4 in it. This amounts to averaging 250 in spending every election cycle, even off-year. I counter with the global commercial banking market having a market cap of 2800 in 2023. The defense industry is almost 480. Health insurance in the US is 1600. This is an expensive, long-drawn fight. This is likely the single most important thing on the list. Anti-corruption measures, labor rights, pro-democracy reforms, including ultimately making it illegal for other people to buy more elections.
a cumulative total of 1803 spent on:
curing the most common cause of blindness worldwide
eradicating polio, rabies, elephantitis, malaria, world hunger, COVID19 issues, Water + Sanitation access, extreme poverty, homelessness in USA, Canada, and UK (I looked for China, Indonesia, Nigeria, Egypt, and Pakistan but couldn't find real numbers),
protecting the Amazon rainforest
Corporate Fixing (5692/10000):
Buying up and changing (converting to Co-Ops, converting to non-profits, dissolving, or something in line with those:
Meta
Amazon
Disney
JP Morgan Chase
Lockheed Martin
Delta
Alphabet
Asda
Tesco
Nike
The Weinstein Company
United Airlines
Shein
EA
BP
Bayer (side-note: they own/are Monsanto now)
De Beers
Vonovia Real Estate Developers
DLE
Ubisoft
Ikea
Shueisha
and Viz Media
It leaves me with 1.4bn left over. I'm comfortable with saying an additional billion would likely be used up administratively as things get a bit more expensive than I thought they would.
Honestly, I could likely blow it on close friends and family who need it. If you have an issue with the house spending being for 50 years instead of 30, that can just be shuffled around a bit to include more people in my personal life to meet the same number.
Leaving me with 470 million to spend elsewhere in the next 20 years. Expensive vacations, nice cars, donating to "smaller" issues as I see worthwhile, giving family and friends money for their ventures/dreams, etc. make me think it wouldn't actually be hard to lose track of that much money in those many years.
Hell, if I want to I can probably spend a million bucks on food a year just for my family. Probably more, if I actively try to do so.

Can you share some insight who Rudi Völler Hannes Wolf and Sandro Wagner are? I am just a casual watcher but this whole Germany NT situation is hilarious 😭
yeah sure! it's basically a very random collection of people..
so rudi völler (63) is a german football legend. he is a world champion and used to coach the german nt between 2000 and 2004. his most legendary moment during that time was an interview he gave where he got angry about reporters criticizing his team and yelled at the host lol. he then went on to become managing director in Leverkusen and this that for a really long time before retiring.. now he is sporting director at the dfb because the task force looked around the room, saw him and said "why don't you do it, rudi"
hannes wolf, 42 (not to be confused with the player with the same name) has been a german youth coach for a while, coached bayer leverkusen as interim coach for a couple months and is now sporting director for youth football and talent development as well as the u20 coach. he and is team developed a concept to change youth football in Germany, with slightly different competitions and overall an innovative approach. he presented his ideas a couple weeks ago and many people loved it. now aki watzke and other old white men came out and said his concept is shit.. and idk what will happen now tbh.
sandro wagner(35) is a former player who started out in the bayern youth teams, went on to play for other clubs before eventually ending his career as back-up striker at bayern, simply because he wanted to play for the club again. he then went on to become a football pundit and co-commentator for several german tv channels. at the same time he got his coaching license. his first station was spgvv unterhaching, he quit that job after being promoted to the 3.bundesliga. he now is apparently an assistant coach at the german u20 (didn't know that before either)
hope that helps <3

"the Western legend ended up co-writing a song with The King’s ex inspired by their heartbreaking split. Elvis dated Miss Tennessee model Linda Thompson from 1972-6, breaking up just eight months before he died of a heart attack at 42. Her love for The King is clearly displayed in the lyrics for a song she co-wrote with Eastwood and Carole Bayer Sager for Diana Krall." !!! oh my goodness, i have yet to see a list of songs written about/inspired by elvis that's actually complete, because i didn't know about this one?! "Was there something more I could have done?" 💔
yet again...incalculable influence and such a lingering memory in so many places.

Tost to step down at end of year as new management team arrives at AlphaTauri | 2024 F1 season
AlphaTauri have announced their long-serving team principal Franz Tost will step down at the end of this season, and be replaced by Ferrari’s racing director Laurent Mekies. Tost has been at the helm of AlphaTauri since their first race in Formula 1 in 2006, when the team was known as Toro Rosso. He is the second longest-serving principal at any team – only Red Bull’s Christian Horner has been in charge of his outfit for longer. During Tost’s tenue his team has reached the podium on five occasions, and won at Monza in 2008 and 2020. For the majority of the team’s existence it was considered as Red Bull’s B-team, and several of its drivers moved onto the senior squad, some like Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel enjoying great success. After he has stepped down, Tost will move into a consultancy position with AlphaTauri for the 2024 season. “First of all, I would like to thank [Red Bull’s late co-founder] Dietrich Mateschitz, who gave me the incredible opportunity to be team principal of Scuderia Toro Rosso and Scuderia AlphaTauri for the past 18 years,” said Tost. “It has been a true privilege to lead the team for such a long period and a great pleasure to work with so many motivated and skilled people, who share my passion for F1.” Peter Bayer, who served as the FIA’s secretary general for sport from 2017 to 2022 and as F1’s executive director from 2021 to the summer of last year, has been signed as the new chief executive officer of AlphaTauri and will take on his new position later this year. “[At] 67 years old it is time to hand over and with Peter as new CEO and Laurent as team principal, we found two very professional people who will bring the team to the next level,” said Tost. “I want to thank everyone for the good co-operation.” Advert | Become a RaceFans supporter and go ad-free The arrival date of Mekies is also unconfirmed, given he is still under contract with Ferrari. But he already knows his next team well having worked at its Faenza base in the early 2000s when it was known as Minardi. Mekies engineered several drivers at the team before Red Bull’s takeover, with the creation of Toro Rosso also leading to a promotion for Mekies as he became chief engineer. He left in 2014 to work for the FIA, then joined Ferrari in 2018. “Firstly, I’d like to pay tribute to Franz for the great job he has done over almost two decades in charge at Faenza,” said Mekies. “I wish him well for the future and I know that both Peter and I will rely on his input and advice in times to come. Looking forward, I am honoured to take on the role of team principal and to return to the team where I spent a large portion of my early career. “Scuderia AlphaTauri has all of the ingredients necessary for greater success in the future and in tandem with Peter I’m looking forward to making that happen.” The team’s future has been the subject of speculation since Mateschitz’s death last year. However last month Tost said there were “no foundation” to rumours that Red Bull were considering selling AlphaTauri. heroin (n.)
1898, from German Heroin, coined 1898 as trademark registered by Friedrich Bayer & Co. for their morphine substitute. According to tradition the word was coined with chemical suffix -ine (2) (German -in) + Greek hērōs "hero" (see hero (n.1)) because of the euphoric feeling the drug provides, but no evidence for this seems to have been found so far.
source heroin is a trademark! also, might literally just be "drug that makes you feel like a hero"

R.I.P. Burt Bacharach
Tumblr media
Songwriting legend Burt Bacharach died of natural causes on February 8th at age 94. Bacharach was responsible for some of the most memorable pop songs of the 20th century many co-written with Hal David. Dionne Warwick became a star in the '60s singing "Don't Make Me Over," Anyone Who Had A Heart," "Walk On By," "I Say A Little Prayer" and "Do You Know The Way To San Jose" all written by Bacharach and David. Their work continued with endless hits recorded by Dusty Springfield, Herb Alpert, Tom Jones, Christopher Cross, Rod Stewart, Neil Diamond, Patti LaBelle and so many others. "The Look Of Love," "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" "Promises Promises" "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" and "Only Love Can Keep Break A Heart" would all be recorded by several artists through the decades. Aretha Franklin recorded "I Say A Little Prayer" in the '60s and Luther Vandross would be one of the artists to bring his legacy to the '80s with his recording of "A House Is Not A Home."
Warwick's career was revived in the '80s when she recorded "That's What Friends Are For" written by Bacharach and his partner Carole Bayer Sager. Bacharach started recording as a solo artist in 1965 and was most successful in that realm with his song "Trains and Boats and Planes" becoming a top hit in the UK that year. In the late '90s, he co-wrote the Grammy-winning album Painted From Memory with Elvis Costello. His 2005 solo album At This Time, had guest appearances from Elvis Costello, Rufus Wainwright and Dr. Dre. Ron Isley collaborated with Bacharach on the Here I Am album of his compositions in Isley's style. In 2013, Bacharach's autobiography, Anyone Who Had A Heart was released. The songwriter was active through his later years performing at Glastonbury in 2015, scoring the film A Boy Called Po and working with pop artist Daniel Tashian. He was honored with induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. There are plans to release another Elvis Costello collaboration album in March 2023. The Songs of Bacharach and Costello are from the musical Taken From Life.
