baylor has been pretty quiet all day after saving daisy. jack keeps telling himself it’s the adrenaline she had. At bedtime, he knows she went up to the room already so so he’s expecting her to be asleep but he goes in and she’s wide awake. “sweetheart?”
“i’m scared to go to sleep.” “why?” “because i keep replaying it in my head and i’m scared of nightmares.”
he frowns and gets into bed and lets her choose how she’s going to lay and he’s surprised when she decides to lay practically on top of him and he turns on her night light and music and he holds her all night

Case UN0000001C, Letter sent by Dr. Horatio, undated. Statements on the subject of a parasitic mushroom. Statement read by Errin Baylor.
Letter Begins
Dearest Alexander, I hope my letter finds you well. How I wish I could be chatting with you over a cup of tea and a warm scone, but I need this letter to find you faster than I will be able to see you. I am writing to you as I believe I have discovered a new species of mushroom, but it seems to be more in your realm of knowledge than it is in the realm of the sciences. And as you know I trust you with my life, and I know you won’t ridicule me like my peers shall.
It began when my team and I departed on a trip to Oregon to study the mycological species in the dense forests. Here is where we came across a rather interesting specimen. This specimen was a dull blue, similar to that of blue mold. It was almost a perfect sphere and grew rather large, six inches in diameter was the biggest we observed. However, when we tried to procure some samples to send to our laboratory something strange began to occur. As Jack attempted to pick one of the mushrooms it exploded into a cloud of spores, similar to that of puffball varieties. We didn’t think much of this and instead collected spores in order to attempt to artificially cultivate them at our lab.
The next day we were meant to go into the forest and collect some more specimens, however Jack wasn’t feeling well. He hadn’t left his tent despite multiple crew members informing him of the itinerary of the day. He only responded when we attempted to open the tent, to which he shied away from any light. We decided it would be best if we let him rest for the day and watch the camp. We could no longer find any of the blue puffballs in the woods though we did procure what appeared to be chanterelles and boletes, among others.
When we returned to camp it was almost dark, and we noticed Jack was now out of his tent. I attempted to speak with him about what had happened earlier that day but he didn’t respond. And I swear to you Alex that Jack had some sort of growth on his hand. It was very small, and appeared to be a rather serious bug bite, but he would not allow anyone to treat him.
This went on for the rest of our trip. We would go out and collect specimens, and Jack would always stay behind. Every day he would get more and more “bites”. Until the final day.
That last day we had packed all of our equipment and were about to take off when I noticed Jack had gone from our campsite. There was a trail of muddy prints in the ground. A group of us went out into the woods to find Jack. We were beginning to get extremely worried about his mental state.
We found him after a while, lying in a ditch. He was dead. His skin was covered in thin blue strands that weaved their way in and out like mycelium. As we got closer we saw all those bites on him were beginning to grow. They burst out of his skin with a terrible popping sound and rapidly puffed up. They were dull blue growths in varying sizes, the biggest of which were around 8 inches in diameter. I ran backwards before they burst. The rest followed.
Parasitic mushrooms do not target people. We haven’t discovered any other species that does this, and we haven’t had any luck growing them in the lab. You are my last hope Alexander. This is far from being in the realm of science now. I’ve sent you a sealed ampule of the spores and some pictures. Perhaps your team has seen something similar before?
Your dear friend, Wyatt Horatio.
Letter ends.
Obviously there isn’t that much follow up to be done, Wyatt Horatio some researcher, despite my best attempts to find any studies conducted by him or mentions of his name he seems to have vanished. Even if anyone on the team managed to get a hold of a lead chances are he’s dead, just judging by the looks of this letter. Probably somewhere around the start of the 1900s. There’s not a lot of letters written anymore and despite some preservation this paper looks like it’s seen some things.
Anyways.
Recording Ends.

Occasionally I find myself in groups populated by business people, technologists, consultants, people who work in nonprofits, practitioners of various kinds — and academics. Such groups gather to figure out how to respond to certain major social problems. Because the participants come from various professional worlds, it can sometimes be difficult to discover a common language, but one theme is always quickly settled on: It’s totally fine to talk about how useless academics are — especially academics in the humanities. I’ve experienced this so many times over the years that I have to make a point of reminding myself of how curious it is. I mean, why invite people to a gathering only to tell them that they have no contribution to make? But I never respond to the dismissal and mockery; I just sit there and smile. I am only tempted to reply in one situation: When people say that academics “have their heads in the clouds.” Or that we humanists are always taking “the view from 50,000 feet.” That’s when I want to say: No. We’re not taking the view from 50,000 feet, we’re taking the view from ten feet underground, and from long long ago. Once there was a man named Jack who owned a nice house. One day, though, Jack noticed that one end of the house was a little lower than it had been. You could place a ball on the floor and it would slowly roll towards that end. Jack was a practical man, so he called Neil, another practical man he knew, who worked in construction. Neil said that he could jack up that end of the house and make everything level again. Jack agreed, and Neil got to work. Jack had a neighbor named Hugh. Hugh was interested in many things, and watched closely as Neil jacked up the low end of the house. With Jack’s permission, he looked around the basement of the house. All this made him more curious, so he walked down to the town’s Records Office and got some information about Jack’s house: when it had been built, who had built it, and what the land had been used for before. Hugh also learned a few things about the soil composition in their neighborhood and its geological character. Hugh paid Jack a visit so he could tell Jack about all he had learned. He stood at Jack’s door with his hands full of documents and photographs, and rang the bell. But when Jack answered he told Hugh that he didn’t have time to look at documents and photographs. He had a very immediate problem: that end of his house was sinking again. In such circumstances Jack certainly couldn’t attend to Hugh’s ragbag of information and discourses about ancient history. After all, Jack was a practical man.

thinking about how jack and baylor go visit her hometown and everyone is like greeting her and he’s like “you’re popular here” and she’s like “i’m the first person in this town to go to a college so far out of state. and my brothers all played sports at the high school and everyone knows my parents.”
and here’s brainrot about baylor’s hometown
and he’s just in amazement learning about her. he loves her childhood home. it’s really homey there. like the walks have pictures framed from years ago. all the kids school pictures, awards on display, christmas cards from over the years. baylor’s room still has the same wallpaper in it. there’s still a hole in one of the walls from her brothers throwing a football at it.
there’s areas where the grandkids have their stuff and pictures of them everywhere. windchimes on the porch with a porch swing. bug catchers everywhere for baylor’s comfort. he jokingly asks if there’s farm animals and she’s like “yeah but mom doesn’t let them in the house anymore.” and he’s like “what” and she has to explain that she kept a chicken in her room for weeks in protest so they couldn’t eat it.
i imagine like their land is huge and they have animals and a huge garden and all her siblings have built on the land for their families. jack finds out baylor can ride a horse which he finds amusing. they explore all the land and there’s an empty spot big enough for a house and she’s like “they saved this spot for me. if i want it.”
he notices she avoids the barn animals because the chicken incident, she wasn’t allowed to keep naming the animals and getting attached after that. he notices she gravitates toward one of her brothers more than the others. he has to protect her from any bugs they run into on the land but she’s like oh look a snake and he’s like the fuck.
in her childhood room he sees the glow in the dark stars on the ceiling and the space posters all over. when he’s visiting, he sleeps in a spare room out of respect for her parents. it’s one of her brother’s old bedroom. he can practically hear the childhood laughter in the house, like he knows the kids just had a great time growing up here.
he asks everyone their favorite baylor story and the stories are great. he’s just like “she really did that?”when they tell him things that are unexpected.

What Duff has done to so many of his characters, specially his female characters, is ATROCIOUS. As a writer myself I can't imagining having such great characters with great potential and voluntarily DESTROY THEM.
Like, Brenda Leigh Johnson was one of the most competent people to ever grace the LAPD with her presence, solved so many cases, found justice for so many people only for all her hard work to later be used against her to destroy her. The whole Baylor mess was SO FORCED, she made it clear that they needed more time to figure the case out but nooo because the big bad army general having a tantrum about 'national security' (You can't tell me that the fact that one of the soldiers' siblings was a gang member that was his identical twin, one that kept saying that he needed protection because someone was after him, wasn't an indicator that the 3 being soldiers wasn't the motive...Like, national security, MY ASS) and her cry baby of a boss (Will Pope was the most useless character, an idiot who told a woman that saved his sorry ass so many times - she risked HER CAREER AND REPUTATION so that HE could have custody of HIS kids - that she had no chance of ever being chief of police and then when she made the final cut and he didn'the threw a fit like a spoiled brat) pushed for a deal and winded up offering immunity to a MONSTER. But they didn't face any consequences.
Because men in this show never do.
Just like that IDIOT OF A DA who all but FORCED BRENDA to share all the evidence they had with someone who turned out to be a SERIAL RAPIST AND MURDERER?
Am I the only seeing a pattern here? The way the two cases that DESTROYED HER CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AND STORY were the ones that she would have closed the right way if dumbass men hadn't undermined her experience and competence pretending they knew her job better than her?
And what was the purpose of killing Willie Rae if not only to TWIST THE KNIFE even further?
Then there is Irene Daniels, who wasn't given enough screen time and not nearly enough scenes with Brenda despite the fact that they WERE THE ONLY TWO WOMEN (Because that's another thing, Duff has a problem with, women supporting each other and female friendships). Irene was a good detective, she was determined, she was driven, she fought for justice and she brought to the team a kind of expertise and competences that was very much necessary. Yet she's the one who left, not Gabriel who was the one at fault for their problems as demonstrated by the fact that he WOULD NOT LEAVE HER ALONE. He was all but harrassing her after the break up. Like, dude, you called it quits, LEAVE HER ALONE.
And then she wasn't even mentioned? It would have been nice to at least get news that she got a promotion in CID if she really had to go.
And then there's Sharon, who was cheated not only with the ending she got - killing her just when she finally got to experience a good marriage is EVIL they didn't even get to go on their hoveymoon... WHO DOES THAT? - but also by her backstory... WTF DO YOU MEAN SHE STAYED MARRIED TO THAT JACKASS EVEN AS THE KIDS GREW UP? AND NO I DO NOT BUY THE 'RELIGIOUS MOTIVES' JACK'S BEHAVIOUR IS UNACCEPTABLE AND WOULD HAVE GOTTEN HER THAT ANNULLMENT.
Also... Why the fuck are her accomplishments tied to HIS NAME? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? And not only that but her not have wanted to be a cop? Doing it for Him? I FEEL SICK!
But also just... Why did Jack even exist? He was so unnecessary as a character.
HONESTLY, SHANDY SHOULD HAVE BEEN SECRETLY MARRIED DURING THE CLOSER - WITH SHARON GOING BY HER MAIDEN NAME AT WORK JUST LIKE BRENDA - AND I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL. Like... Even the two actors picked as Sharon's kids could pass for Shandy's kids, Emily is mini Sharon down to the smile and expressions and NO ONE CAN CONVINCE ME, and I cannot stress this enough, that Ricky doesn't look like Andy, they look like father and son.
WASTED. FUCKING. OPORTUNITY.
Also, on the topic of Shandy... The DISRESPECT of not having Andy flirt with Sharon. Like you ESTABLISHED HIM as a charming, charismatic man and then that doesn't come out with THE LOVE OF HIS LIFE? TF?
Like it's bad enough we barely see them kiss, but not even flirty banter? SERIOUSLY?
And, aside from all that, I also want to address Thomas Delk and Russel Taylor.
Delk shouldn't have been killed and this is another hill I'll die on, unlike Pope he respected the people he worked with, especially the women he worked with, he recognized both Sharon' and Brenda's competence - sure he was a little tough on Brenda for the Baylor mess but we already established that was bs - and didn't try to pit two powerful women against each other for his benefit, wihich Will did CONSTANTLY.
Delk should have been Chief of Police, and Brenda should have taken Pope's job which would have allowed to still interact with her team and be involved, even if less, in investigations (that's another disgusting thing about Duff's writing... Brenda's submissive attitude towards Will, this sort of sick codependency, the way he manipulates her constantly), and as a result, Pope should have gone to Traffic like intended.
Also Brenda in Will's place and Sharon leading Major Crimes and them being the LAPD'S most badass duo? WASTED. FUCKING. OPORTUNITY. AGAIN.
But then again, it's a truth universally acknowledged that there is nothing misogynists hate more than two competent powerful women working together istead of trying to tear each other down.
Then there's Taylor who for me only had two options get a much needed redemption arc or have all his two sides, sneaky, backstabbig playing come back to bite him.
He was written like such a snake, always trying to put others down for his benefit and he was two-faced, always switching sides, it was exhausting. I TRIED TO LIKE HIM, I LIKED HIM DURING THE CLARK CASE AND WHEN POPE DISMANTLED PRIORITY HOMICIDES AND HE AND BRENDA BLINDSIDED POPE IN FRONT OF THE JURNALIST.
But he always reverted back to being ready to backstab everyone. And I am going to say it, he didn't deserve to be a commender and he did not deserved Pope's job. Brenda was right, she rightfully outranked him. He wasn't half as competent and half the time he cared more about appearances than actually solving cases like... Do we need about the time he lead Priority Homicides instead of Brenda and only superficially worked cases, ignoring Flynn and Gabriel as they made freaking valid points? And even mocked Brenda? Like WTF?
He needed to recognize his mistakes (And I would have loved that, I was all about a redemption arc but it never came, it was always a hot then cold situation and that is BAD WRITING. PERIOD.) and change or paying the price for his behavior. Instead he remained a fake, two face gossip and still got more regard and respect than the two leading ladies of both shows.
Major Crimes Lessons: If your a woman your story ends in disgrace and death. If your a man your story ends in promotion and position.
Lessons that Major Crimes Taught Me: Brenda leaves the LAPD in disgrace. Sharon, Willie Rae and Julio’s mom all die. Irene Daniels leaves because of her and David’s relationship problems. Emma is killed by Stroh. Amy and Andrea have no ending.
Rusty kills Stroh in cold blood and is rewarded with a position at the D.A.’s office. Provenza starts his tenure as the head of Major Crimes by covering up murder. Julio and Fritz are totally cool with it. Julio and Buzz also get promotions into new positions.
And no not every single male made it out alive and happy but lets count how many female characters had a happy ending or an ending at all. Cami is the only one I can think of. And her ending revolves around a man.
#lessons that major crimes taught me#in which the calm girl is pissed af#i'm salt#how can you sit there and say your not a misogynist#shandy#sharon raydor#brenda leigh johnson#Irene Daniels#wasted potential#thomas delk#russell taylor#willie rae johnson#tony denison#mary mcdonnell#kyra sedgwick#pissed creative writing graduate

“so what’s the story with her ex boyfriend?” jack asked luke. baylor had been living with them for about three weeks now and he still hadn’t gotten the clear story on why baylor showed up.
“i shouldn’t say much.”
“is she in danger? like do we need to get the cops involved? get her a weapon for when we aren’t home?” jack asked worried. luke sighed, “she was dating him since i met her. he came up like once or twice on a visit.”
jack was on the edge of his seat listening. “he was always nice but I don’t know he’d always just talk about baylor like she was property. like he expected her to just put her degree in a box and never use it and just stay at home.”
“you met him?” “yeah she brought him to a game once, after the game we went out to eat, just a few of us. dylan kinda thought he was an ass, baylor isn’t really talkative in the first place but he talked over her and for her all night.”
jack frowned. “from what she told me, this all happened because he proposed at her graduation. mark was there. he drove baylor to the airport. said that she just didn’t say much after it. her parents were there and she just left, apologized to her parents and her ex and called me. she didn’t know where else to go. he went and knocked for hours at her apartment apparently.” it fell silent. “do you think she just got scared?”
“no, i think she realized that if she said yes, she was saying goodbye to everything she wanted. she had already been accepted to her graduate program and he wanted her to rescind her acceptance and come home. she loves her hometown, but she’s too smart for them there.”
