anyway here's my rwrb movie review that no one asked for!

it does not even come close to the amazingness that is the book. and it really comes down to three things

characters

pacing

mismatched energy

music

characters. ok there are so many characters missing! june not being around is ridiculous. so is henry's absent mom. i don't get it. and literally, raf, the backstabber responsible for the leak, doesn't exist so that this weird raf/liam hybrid can be here? every character is responsible for bringing stakes into play. not having them decreases the stakes and makes you rely on the logic of the problem instead of the way it makes you feel, killing the emotional investment, most prominently in the huge leak convo scene. And many of the characters are NOT scary enough! if i'm supposed to believe the crown is homophobic, i need someone to actually say something homophobic, just not the word "homosexual" in a wierd voice. i need to see hushed voices and people almost getting caught and disdainful glances. alex got away with too much shit and if the comedy can be that extreme, i need our character presence to bring that back to earth. henry can't be the only person doing that because then, again, we only believe him either bc we read the book or bc it makes sense, not bc we see it. showing vs. telling ppl! this is like, basic writing principle.

pacing/scale. this is probably the biggest issue. the first 30 mins of the movie cover like half of the book! also, most are really short scenes (like 1-3 mins), so there isn't time to get invested. we don't see them develop from friends to enemies or friends to lovers. and we don't see the details of alex understanding his bisexuality! this also decreases the stakes because the audience doesn't understand how deeply they know about and care for one another. when henry spits out "it feels like you don't know me" we're kinda like, yeah... bc we don't know henry, either. we needed the texts and emails to be slowed waaayyy down. what they did to accommodate them for film is cute, but it wrecked the sense of time passing, and passing time is integral to showing change and development in relationships. and a lot of this vulnerability in character DID happen during or before/after sex in the book! so cutting out sex scenes, as they did so often, really ruined the sense of how they were feeling. the sense of taking this from "i am attracted to you but have unresolved issues about my sexuality/our relationship so am using your body to express this pain" kind of sex to "i'm actually deeply in love with you" kind of sex! they kind of did it with the slowness of henry's undressing but it should have been even slower AND there should have been foreplay and blushing and lots and lots of consent. maybe candles? idk i just feel like one of the things casey mq does so well is writing sex scenes that are both awesome for representation and also necessary for plot/character development

so many moments happen in a way that distorts their emotional impact by having either strange camera focuses and/or not having enough physical acting to be believable. be it the focus of the scene (why do cameras cut to a patch of lavender while henry is opening up to bea?). and, in their big fight scene after not talking for a week, why does the camera focus so much on just henry's face? alex is the one who is confronting? and why is there a focus on quiet conflict? let them rage! in the museum scene, why is henry leading alex like a tour guide, instead of trying to be close to him? or trying to not look at alex only to fail? there isn't quite enough physical pining and use of the actors' bodies in space to help heighten emotions of the scene. they are just like, bodies roaming around. part of this is also the way voiceover is used for the text/email scenes and how quickly questions would be answered bc we'd see the answer happening in real time. more diminishing of stakes!

i feel like this is getting out of my realm of literary expertise (i'm a creative writing major), but i do feel like the choice of music was odd. WHERE WAS THAT FUCKING BILLY JOEL SONG? why did they use such a niche "i can't help falling in love with you" cover. why did we never hear henry play the piano until the very end? why didn't alex's dad play the guitar? why did we never get to hear a muffled breath over the phone? WHY DID THEY NEVER MOAN DURING SEX?? like, why is there such a lack of real, human sounds? i think one of my favorite moments was henry fumbling around the closet and singing karaoke for that reason. they were real sounds that could happen in real life. yes, the music swells in your head when you are into someone, but camera zooms can get that effect. just like, less weird pop, more sounds that are contextual to what is going on.

anyways, some moments are so golden. and many characters are played well, henry and zahra, especially. but the stakes are like completely removed bc all we see is success montages with short sad scenes. i think that part of this is that it can be hard adapting a dual-pov book into a movie bc how do you not show the context in real time? it's so tempting! but part of the impact of dual-pov is the inherent longing, miscommunication, and emotional spiraling that comes from not knowing the answers and seeing things right away! too many things were resolved too quickly.

i also think that they really glossed over alex's discovery of his bisexuality. i remember the scene where he talked about his poster of prince henry having thumbprints all over it and how he had taken these confusing seeds of bisexuality and repackaged them as idolization and rage and jealousy bc he had nothing else to call it! it was literally so relatable and so integral to my own queer awakening and to see those parts removed really took away from alex's stakes and the main message of the book. like of course henry is scared bc his family is homophobic but alex's fear couldn't be evenly represented bc his identity was realized so quickly that the doubt and embarrassment that went along with it only lasted for one sex scene and a way-too-heavy-handed-ally convo with his mom.

so i don't know if you're aware (i'm pretty sure you've heard it somewhere tho...although i don't really know 😅😅) buuut regarding seventeen's be the sun tour, they're having two additional shows! one is in Jakarta and the other in Bulacan (in the philippines). the ticket selling for this was on oct 28 (was the carat membership presale) and oct 29 (the general sale). originally, i wasn't planning on going to the bulacan show since 1) I didn't want to go through the stress i went through the first ticket selling. 2) the accessibility of the venue and additional expenses just to go there. 3) concert quality of the venue. but.....haha guess what 💔 i bought a carat membership and joined the presale 😭😭😭 and like things get sort of worse here. so october 28, 7am, i woke up then did my usual morning stuff (wow okay why did i share that 😭 😭) by the time i finished it was alr a little past 8am (sloth era) told the cafe babies i'd be late to work (ik it wasn't nice for me to do that since work is more important that seventeen but,,,,,,yeah i didn't think about that before 😭😭) ANYWAYS that happened. so yeah i prepared myself mentally and physically, made a shrine as well as a manifestation table) lowk looked like i was sacrificing my laptop to who knows where). since the waiting room started at 9am (yeah well i thougnt it starts at 9am like last time) still had a little more time to do that arrangement. so 9am comes and i was alr in the livenation website looking for the link. guess what,,,it wasn't there 😭😭 i realized that there would be no waiting room and we go straight to the website at 10am 😭😭😭 so i patiently (no i didn't i was highk stressing, well i mean at least my 😭 boyfriend 😭 was there to calm me down [he was giving pacemaker dino tbh] anyways 10am we were given the link. "we are sorry but our website is currently experiencing heavy traffic right now. you will be let in once a slot become available" screamed at this and opened twitter to see if i was the only one 😭😭 there were so many carats experiencing the same thing aurmg 😭😭 so i waited to be let in but it was taking so long, NOT UNTIL MY SAVIOR ARRIVED 😭 someone sent a direct link to the queuing and i got to the queue 😭 i was at 18k on my laptop and then 16k on my phone had to wait for only like 30 mins until i was in the website on my phone so i went in the website, was shaking, trying to go for my desired seats (no vip sc too tiring 😭😭) so i got them (planned to go with my mom, im so sorry mom but once you go in that venue i believe you wouldn't get to escape caratland) was about to complete my transaction then suddenly my payment failed 😭😭 SO I HAD TO CALL THE MALL'S CUSTOMER SERVICE 😭😭 luckily they answered, then they were amazing enough to reset my carat membership code. i had to also call the bank but they weren't answering so i had to use another type of payment and then my desired seats were taken so spent about 5 mins looking for a good seat </3 and 😭😭 and then i got the tickets 😭😭 until now it hasn't sank in for some reason 😭😭 but 😭 im seeing seventeen on december 17 😭😭😭😭 this was so anticlimactic </3 so i got the tickets like only in 2hrs which was amazing 💖💖 most seats are now taken in the arena but we're still hoping for a sold out show bc imagine the articles that are like "kpop group seventeen sold out a 55k capacity arena!" that was an ew headline but 🤩🤩 it's the story that counts HEJDJXJD so yeah rn it isn't sinking in yet but like i hope it does before the concert so i can actually prepare myself mentally <3

bro i hate having roommates i literally. told this guy once before hey. don't do the dishes really early in the morning. bc our walls are thin and if u bang the dishes together for 10 minutes it's going to wake me up and then it's really hard to go back to sleep bc it's very jarring. ok he did it again after receiving very specific and reasonable instructions. "oh hey are you ok if i work from home in the middle of the night for my CALL CENTER JOB? where it's my JOB to talk loudly and clearly to people for hours? and if i sit in the middle of the living room which shares two walls with your bedroom?" is smth i've actually never heard bc o yeah they don't ask lol bc they will never ever consider the effects their actions have on others it's just. oh hey cool i get to work from home. and then he watches movies loudly without headphones while working and then i have to fucking be the one to text him and he says oh shit yeah i'll turn it down sorry abt that as if we don't have this exact same interaction 3x a week. and then he watches yt videos and tiktoks on his phone with the volume turned LITERALLY all the way up. he watches CINEMA SINS. i hear that dinging at FULL VOLUME every like 10 seconds. anyways idk i'm pissed off today bc i woke up at like 5:15 am bc i was thirsty which is like fine whatever i take a while to fall back asleep but i don't have to be up till 8 so i can definitely fall back asleep except. no i can't i literally will never be able to when i actually need to bc 5:30 is right when the birds start singing rlly loud. and then after i toss and turn for a while and eventually acclimate to include the birds in my background sound and tune them out at 6 the sun comes up and now i have to get used to that. except at 6:30 my roommate gets home bc i guess for fucking once they made him actually go into work like he's actually supposed to most of the time per company policy! ok that's fine our door is loud he can't help that. ok he has to take his dog out to the bathroom ok fine. the dog runs around and barks super loud right outside my window for like 5 mins. it's a shitty untrained dog and they will never properly train her and honestly they're not fit to be dog owners bc she's a huge dog w a loud bark and they don't even take her on real walks they literally only walk her around our apt complex. she isn't even fully potty trained. whatever he can't do anything abt her barking rn it's what she does i'll just wait till they come back and she's quiet. ok they're back in and he's walking to his room ok we're gonna get quiet! WORNG he walks back to the kitchen and starts doing dishes!!! he starts washing the dishes! after i've specifically told him before that i can hear it super loud in my room and to not do that in the early morning! tbh i did NOT let it continue i had already given up on sleep but it's the principal bc this can never happen again. and i went out there and said are you doing dishes? it's 7 am i'm trying to sleep. and then he was like ohhhh yeah ok sorry. as if we haven't had this conversation before. and u know what he is doing as we speak? he is in his room watching tik toks at full volume.
