Night 2 at Billie’s Craft Beer Fest was much better. Still it was not at all how I’d prefer to spend my time. G loved it though so I endured.
BCBF is about drinking American craft style beer, not the traditional styles for which Europe is famous. The format being 50 breweries (several from America) bringing 8 beers each so 400 total over two sessions.
After a fanfare opening, worthy of a professional sports event at 3:00, each brewery began pouring their first two (100 beers) to the masses. Then the second round of 100 beers began pouring at 6:30 until 10:00 or the kegs blew.
Beers were dispensed into 5oz glasses but most pours were 3-4 ounces.
The most common beer type was imperial stout aged in a variety of barrels with lots of added ingredients (adjuncts) like chocolate, fruit, and spices. These beers are strong, mostly 10-15% alcohol by volume (abv) and syrupy sweet. Not my thing.
The 2nd most common beers were double, triple, and imperial IPAs. These are also high abv beers with lots of sweetness on first tasting but finishing with some degree of dryness due to bittering hops. They also featured adjuncts like spices, fruits, etc. Also not my thing.
I drank mostly wild ales (spontaneous fermentation) and soured beers of lower strength of which there were plenty. Even a couple of lagers though each had some non-traditional aspect. On our second night we had both the glass from the first round and second round so we could get two pours at a time. This made a big difference.
G and I never drank our beers inside with the crowd. We carried them outside navigating the crushing throngs into the cold night air. With two glasses this halved the harrowing trips inside. Outside there were live bands, food trucks, and all the smokers. As there was a near constant breeze the smoke was tolerable.
Tumblr media
Also, most of the pissoirs (pictured) were outside and they were a marvel. Given the nature of this event, participants were in constant need of…relief. I never saw a wait. It’s the only instance in which European plumbing is superior to American and we must change that!
To be honest, I’ve never witnessed such a large group of people behave so well. I never heard a cross word either night. Of course I overheard very little English spoken by the drinkers unless they were ordering their beers from the brewers. Of course nearly everyone there spoke English.
All event announcements were in English only and all the bands sang mostly English language songs including the Johnny Cash cover band.
Tumblr media
The DJ inside played mostly English language standards and anytime someone spoke to us, they switched instantly to English once they knew we were Americans. Quite humbling really but everyone was friendly and only wanted to talk about beer.
I understand most people in this area speak Dutch/Flemish with English as a second language but Antwerp is a city filled with people from everywhere so I heard plenty of Arabic, some German and French, and some speaking to each other in English with accents that made me think it wasn’t their first language.
During my many visits in Brussels I’ve become used to hearing lots of English, but my two days in Antwerp I heard mostly other languages.
Tumblr media
Oddly, most signage in Antwerp is in English!
The oddest thing was sitting in a Five Guys after the first night so G could get ballast for his belly full of strong beer. Every bit of signage was in English, down to the excerpts of reviews from American cities. The second night I was hungry so we got kebaps at a place where little was in English but the pictures were multi-lingual.

Bologna Children’s Book Fair – bigger than ever
Tumblr media
Life is too short to read a bad book. – James Joyce
Hardly four weeks after the London Book Fair, it was Bologna’s turn to open its doors in front of a large demonstration for a cease-fire in Gaza and the liberation of all hostages, both those in Palestinian and those in Israeli custody.
The Bologna Children’s Book Fair was again configured in three co-located sections – the main children’s book fair, a generalist (non-children’s) extension under the heading Bologna Book Plus, and the Bologna Licensing Trade Fair/Kids. New features in the program were the TV/Film Rights Centre in collaboration with the United Nations and the Society of Illustrators in New York, and the Audio Forum, added to the existing Literary Translation Forum in partnership with app developer Beat Technology. Also new for 2024 was the Licensing Portfolio Review, an opportunity to bring together consumer goods and audiovisual companies with illustration and design talents to create new business opportunities.
In its fourth year, BolognaBookPlus (BBPlus) included the topical programme India in the Limelight, with exhibition spaces, book jacket exhibits, copyright exchanges, and training workshops on rights selling, author representation, scouting, and writing and self-publishing. This year’s emphasis on the Indian book market was organized in cooperation with the National BookTrust of India. With BBPlus’ Literary Translation Forum returning for a third year, the centerpiece there was Taiwan’s book industry.
The Bologna Licensing Trade Fair/Kids (BLTF/K), dedicated to brands and the licensing of content for children, teenagers, and young adults, was held for the 17th time as an integral part of BCBF, with a Licensing Business Lounge and features such as matchmaking events for companies in the fashion and retail sectors. In a collaboration with Licensing Magazine, BLTF/Kids also organized the 4th edition of the International Kids Licensing Days – three days of in-depth discussions with international brands on issues related to content for children and young adults, from licensing to publishing, from audiovisual to gaming. Some of the topics discussed continue to be available online on demand, including digital publishing, animation, omnichannel retailing, sustainability, and toys.
Bologna Global Rights Exchange online
BCBF also has an online rights exchange platform, the Bologna Global Rights Exchange database, GRE. Powered by the international rights platform PubMatch since 2020, it has some 20,000 titles and offers exhibitors the opportunity to present their titles and brands, create and name their own showcases, search content and trends, and schedule and hold calls directly on the platform.
The system is open to publishers, agents, agencies, scouts, licensees, licensors, developers, audiovisual producers, and service providers. It is free to all in-person BCBF exhibitors.

Asia was also high on the agenda at the other two book fairs that were held recently – the Leipzig and Brussels book fairs. With 2085 exhibitors, including 445 at its Manga Comic Convention, the Leipzig Book Fair was attended by 283,000 visitors, both from the trade and the general public. At the Manga Comic Convention, several publishers from Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia had taken large booths. The Brussels Book Fair, with 380 booths and 75,000 trade and other visitors, had installed a large ‘Manga Village’ representing several Japanese publishing houses.
Bologna awards

Among the winners of the BolognaRagazzi Awards, aimed at highlighting the most beautiful and innovative picture books published worldwide, three publishers from South Korea received special mentions – Atnoonbooks for its Mo Story, Woongjin ThinkBig for the book As You Drive, and Sakyejul for the title Rice Cake House of a Tiger.
Another of BCBF’s awards is the Bologna Licensing Award for agencies, licensees ,and retailers on an international level, to enhance the content link within the entire supply chain as the basis of success. This year, a new category was introduced, dedicated to the Best Licensed Sustainable Project, to reward companies and brands that care about the future of the planet through the development of sustainable consumer goods and projects for children, teens, and young adults.
The next BCBF has been scheduled for 31 March to 3 April 2025.

Bologna Book Fair 2024: Looking For New Trends
Bologna Book Fair poised between the past (pandemic high levels of sales aare forgotten now) and the future (what will AI do?). So what's next? Find out the start of an answer here
This year, the Bologna Children’s Book Fair (BCBF), the biggest fair in the world for children’s literature since it was launched 61 years ago, opened in Bologna, Italy, on Monday, April 8. Lasting for four days, it was a big success, drawing 1,523 exhibitors from 100 countries, with Slovenia as the guest of honor and China back in full force. I was among the many who attended, with over 31735…

Assignment 1: Voiden
Game link:
https://gallery.styly.cc/scene/d510fafc-bcbf-42c8-a9b4-837322bbc037
Tumblr media
In my project, Voiden, the essence of "space" is "time" and "environment". By merging my living and learning environments in a collage style, I aim to construct a metaphorical daily routine: travelling from a void to my apartment, through my bedroom connected to the basement to uni, and finally returning home, where time seems strangely frozen. This absurd environment is a visualization of existentialist theory. I always contemplate whether I am free or not in this linear lifestyle, like the fact that I included my scene-constructing video in this project, which seems to break the fourth wall, suggesting that life is defined and simulated.
Audio is vital to this project, but Styly can't seem to handle it properly. I added at least five spatial audios, but only two played, I tried adjusting the bitrate but it didn't work, it ended up showing a flashing grey square in the scene. In addition, non-spatial audio can be heard on pc, but sometimes can’t when entering VR.
There's no trigger in Styly. It means I couldn't design complex mechanics, such as triggering invisible colliders around the player as they walked into the bedroom so they couldn't leave.

Checkin’ It Twice
Starring: Blonde city GirlBoss! (Kim Matula) as Ashley, and tall off-brand Patrick Dempsey (Kevin McGarry) as Scott.
Plot summary: Ashley returns to her small town of Idaho Falls, Idaho, to spend Christmas with her family. She breaks up with her Big City Boyfriend (BCBf) within the first two minutes of the movie.
Scott is the newest member of a (very) minor league hockey team with the improbable name of the Fighting Trout. He’s waiting to be called up to the Big Show, and resents being stuck in the small town. He breaks up with his BCGf within the first two minutes of the movie.
Improbable plot points: He’s staying in her parents’ guest house.
Makeover?: Ashley goes from tailored suits to cozy knitwear. No one comments on the transition, though there is an early comment about how she smells good and looks like she shops “on Saks Fifth Avenue.”
Candy cane level (from 1-4, mint kick to saccharine): 3
Hot cocoa level (from 1-4, mild romance to HOT hot hot): 1. There’s one kiss at the end, and not a lot of chemistry to speak of up to that point. ☕️
Holiday spirit: 2.5 out of 5 🎄🎄
