F-5 fighters former Swiss Air Force will be part of the second USMC aggressor squadron

The U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) plans to activate a second opposing aircraft squadron (aggressor) to meet the future air combat training needs of its attack fighter squadrons. The second squadron will provide the East Coast with training resources similar to those on the West Coast.

According to the 2022 Marine Corps Aviation Plan released this week, Marine Fighter Training Squadron 402 (VMFT-402) will be activated in fiscal year 2023 at the Marine Corps Air Station of Beaufort, South Carolina, scheduled to be safe for flight in early 2024.

The USMC has long put the VMFT-401 reserve squadron on the field at MCAS Yuma, Arizona, which flies 11 single-seat Northrop F-5N fighters and one F-5F Tiger II. The squadron is upgrading to 11 F-5N+ aircraft and one F-5F+ aircraft.

The VMFT-402, which will also initially be a reserve squadron, will be equipped with three F-5N+ aircraft, but will eventually operate eight F-5N+ and two F-5F+ aircraft.

To equip the new squadron, the Marine Corps acquired 11 additional F-5 aircraft from the Swiss air force through the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR). The aircraft will be delivered to the USMC for a period of four years from the fourth quarter of 2023.

The Navy and Marine Corps F-5 fleet is undergoing upgrades to increase capacities and extend service life. The fleet is being upgraded with digital cockpits at a rate of two or three aircraft per year. The Naval Air Systems Command plans to integrate the TCTS II Tactical Combat Training System - Increment II (TCTS II) to "allow synthetic injections of opponents to narrow the gap foreseen in adversary training".

"Serving as a training asset for the entire MAGTF, as well as for joint force, the F-5 has seen opponent requirements grow significantly in the last 13 years," according to the aviation plan, largely due to the pilot training requirements of the F-35 VMFA-501 and VMFA-502 fleet replacement squadrons. “The annual requirements of fleet opponents are also expected to increase for squadrons in transition from 12,000 air-to-air missions in [20 fiscal to 17,000 missions per year in order to meet T2.0 requirements in fiscal year 2025.”

The aviation plan said that "the opposing capacity is the biggest problem in the air-to-air training of the Marine Corps, closely followed by the availability and modernization of the range and resources of the training simulator. The VMFT-401 can provide up to 3,300 missions per year, restricted by the use of the aircraft and the number of F-5s assigned. Combining A/A [air-to-air] requirements for fleet training, FRS production [fleet replacement squad] and weapons school support, the USMC creates an opponent requirement of almost 15,000 missions in 2022. Thus, the USMC suffers more from a gap of 11,000 outcomings. Aviation is looking for options to close this gap."

The U.S. military uses commercial air services that fly with former military jets in the role of adversary, but, according to the aviation plan, "commercial air services cannot meet all opponent requirements. The future lies in several solutions that include the efficient use of the F-5s fleet, exploring low-cost training opportunities, incorporating live, virtual, constructive capacity and commercial air services to increase requirements.”

02. who are your character’s friends and family? who do they surround themselves with? who are the people your character is closest to?

a lot of what i have about drew’s family is Stolen.   her parents are high society ala emily and richard gilmore.   they’re very focused on their image and legacy and upholding both.   her brother,   eddie,   is the family rebel and the one who’s really straying hard from the Hospitality Buisness,   which makes her relationship with her parents better than it maybe could be.   she surrounds herself with the Gays of the greater carina area and generally just looks for people who can take a joke and blow off steam with her.

03. what is your character’s biggest fear? who have they told this to? who would they never tell this to? why?

drew’s biggest fear is wasting her life secretly being a Pawn to what her dad’s wanted all along.   she has plans to Steal his job one day,   and do things her way,   but until then,   she’s having to play along with him a little,   and she worries that she’s not fighting back hard enough.   she’s probably told eddie about this just because he Gets thinking their dad is a dumbass but that’s about it bc she doesn’t go into great Detail about her Career Plans with others.

04. has your character ever been in love? had a broken heart?

probably not 2 either.   she’s a casual dater.   she hasn’t really had a serious relationship before mara,   and i don’t know if we’ve established how Serious they are atm or at an In Love level.

05. your character is doing intense spring cleaning. what is easy for them to throw out? what is difficult for them to part with? why?

drew doesn’t have a problem getting rid of things.   she likes a good deep clean and tries to do one at least a couple times a year.   she has the hardest time getting rid of clothes and bags   ( specifically totes bags and backpacks,   her purse selection is much more Curated ).

06. it’s saturday at noon. what is your character doing? give details.

she likes spending saturday morning on the beach.   she goes for a run,   then sticks around for lunch with a book or her journal or something.   she likes just being outside and taking it easy.

07. what is one strong memory that has stuck with your character since childhood?

she remembers a winter her family went to spend the holidays with her mother’s parents in france.   it was a year where,   weirdly,   everyone got along,   and they didn’t bog themselves down with events and appearances during christmas,   and just focused on hanging out and being together.   she keeps meaning to make it back to visit again.

09. what is something that upsets your character? where do they go when they’re upset? 

drew’s upset by feeling like she’s being held back.   she thinks she has a lot of good ideas,   and doesn’t like feeling like they’re being ignored.   it’s a lot of what her problem with her family is:   her notes fall on deaf ears.   when she’s upset,   she likes to go for a walk or run,   or be around people who’ll let her rant and rave for a little.

10. when your character thinks of their childhood kitchen, what smell do they associate with it? why?

coffee.   she’s from a family of coffee people,   and moments they’d all spend getting out the door in the morning were sometimes the extent of the Family Time they’d all have together for the day,   so the smell of coffee brings back more memories of her childhood home and growing up with her family more than any food.

I LOVE these egg bites sooo much!! I hope you give them a try! Below are links to the tools I used in this video and the recipe! There are a couple of suggested tools when making these babies…a blender, a a silicone baby food mold , and a Steamer Rack Trivet(this should have come.

Steps to make Instant pot egg bites:

Spray the silicone egg bites mold with the cooking spray. Then Set aside..

Add the eggs, cottage cheese, heavy cream, (use whatever cheese you love) Gruyére cheese, pepper, and chives to the blender and blend for 2 minutes on medium speed, or blend well or until the mixture is light and fully. Be careful not to blend dark ingredients with you egg mixture. The result could look nasty but taste delicious..

Next fill the egg bite mold openings halfway with the egg mixture. Then add 3/4 of the chopped bacon or other add-ins you decided on (I used mushrooms and corn) and gently press them in. Continue filling with the egg mixture, and top with remaining bacon, and press it in..

Pour 1 cup of water into the inner stainless liner of the pot. Then set the full egg bites mold on the trivet and very carefully set it in the pot. Loosely cover with foil..

Close the lid of the pot and set the steam release knob to the sealing position..

Press the Pressure Cook or Manual button (or dial) then press the +/- button (or dial) to select 8 minutes. The pot will take a few minutes to come to pressure..

When the cook cycle is finished, let the pot sit undisturbed for 8 minutes (8 minute Natural Release). Then open the steam release valve to Quick Release the remaining pressure until the pin in the lid drops down..

Open the lid and remove the foil. Use silicone mitts to grasp the trivet handles and carefully remove the egg bites mold. Set aside to rest for about 4 minutes. They may be puffed up quite a bit, but they will go back down. They will come out of the mold easier if they cool a little..

Serve warm as is, or with any garnish you like..

Recipe Notes *If you like lots of add-ins in one batch, you may have too much mixture for one mold to hold it all. Maybe consider getting a second mold, or make another batch. One batch yields 7 Instant Pot Egg Bites.

Oookay. This one was tough, as evidenced by the fact that this is going up nearly a month after the episode aired. I, personally, have seven pages of solution attempts, when a new code usually takes no more than two. As it is, we cracked the code with only about twelve hours to go before the three week mark, and only after Dan took pity* on us and gave an important clue about what Memphis meant. As usual, solution below the cut (and remember, the dashboard doesn't like tables).

(We're... only partially convinced that he pulled this on us because we figured out the pattern for the colors.)

* And by took pity, I of course mean he became bored with how our imprecations had trailed off the week before.

WEATHER IN MEMPHIS: SWELTERING

Well, we've got several familiar elements here, and one oddity. Obviously, the first step we all tried was to run the code as a normal red code with a time rearrangement, but that produced gibberish. After that, along with trying all of the other colors in case Memphis meant that the definitions were scrambled, those of us in the decryption channel tried every variation of a keyed cipher we could find. Vigenere variants, Beaufort variants, Playfair, two-square and four-square ciphers, keyed Caesar... Hell, I even tried a trifid cipher. Nothing worked. We tried applying the time function after the vigenere. We tried ignoring the time. We tried brute force attacks for both Vigenere and Playfair ciphers. When the really bad winter storm happened and the main Ars Paradoxica Twitter tweeted about climate change affecting the weather, we tried both weakening (HOT) and reversing SWELTERING (after all, the previous weather was FREEZING). Nothing. Worked. By the time Dan handed us the big clue, I was trying to figure out how to write a simulated annealing algorithm to force a Playfair key (we were almost certain at this point that it was a Playfair, given that every response Daniel sent us involved the words "play", "fair", or, in the case of the first tweet he sent on the subject, "dirty tricks"--the opposite of playing fair, which... turned out to be important later).

On the 23rd, Daniel sent out this tweet:

Which was the final clue we needed.

So, for those who don't know, the Playfair cipher works by creating a 5x5 grid, based on a keyword or phrase, and dropping a single letter (generally J, Q, or Z). There are several popular variations on building the grid: writing vertically instead of horizontally, spiraling in towards the center, diagonals, switching directions. All of these (and several mirrored versions) had been attempted already. However, we hadn't tried fully inverting the key, particularly not using that inversion instead of inverting the number-letter translation as Red usually calls for.

There's a Q in the cipher text, so we would normally expect the Playfair square to look like this:

If we invert it, we end up with:

The first step of encrypting or decrypting a Playfair is to split the text into pairs of letters (digraphs). After that, there are four rules to encrypting the cipher, though they can, of course, vary for an extra layer of protection.

Split any doubled letters by adding a letter (generally an X) in between them (and rearrange the following digraphs to compensate). If there's an odd number of letters, add a letter at the end to pad it out.

If the letters of the digraph are in the same row, take the letter to the right of each letter, wrapping around if need be. (When encrypting with the table for this cipher, TL would become LE.)

If the letters of the digraph are in the same column, shift the letters down one. (OX becomes DE.)

Otherwise, form a rectangle between the two letters, and take the opposite corner on the same row. (KG becomes PR.)

For decryption, reverse the second and third rules: down becomes up, right becomes left.

So, we get the following:

One oddity is that one of the digraphs in the later part of the code appears to have been encoded in the wrong direction. It's been pointed out to Daniel, but we haven't gotten a response back yet on whether or not it's a mistake.

We only have one example of Memphis so far, but we are, of course, already speculating on how the different colors are going to work. As you may recall, it was eventually discovered that Green and Magenta (and the hypothetical Black and White) used an inverted version of the Vigenere table. I personally suspect that with Memphis, we're going to see a change in layout of the table for those colors; going from horizontal to vertical or spiral or diagonal.
