i don't like quebec bashing but it's kind of an inevitability so i rarely push back much when i hear it. the only province i genuinely step in to defend with any amount of energy is manitoba bc i think it's unfairly maligned... true that winnipeg is pretty boring as far as canadian cities go but i do fw rural manitoba. especially the part near the ontario border i would kill to go back to lake of the woods tbh one of the most beautiful places in canada

“There’s a great, beautiful quirkiness to Winnipeg that if you’re from here, you get it,” Mr. Gillingham said. “Whether you’re talking about burgers at Mr. Mikes or being proud to be from the North End, or Ukrainian heritage, or the fact that we don’t have freeways, but we have some streets that change names six times from one end to the other.”
They do; it’s bonkers. And if I hadn’t already fallen head over heels for Winnipeg, a ludicrous intersection known by locals as Confusion Corner would have done it.
Mr. Gillingham has talked to corporate recruiters who tell him they have a hard time getting people to come to Winnipeg, but once they’re in, you can’t get them to leave. It’s a ridiculous cliché to say a city’s greatest asset is its people, he said – but then he couldn’t help himself, raving about how resilient, witty, fun, sarcastic, talented, educated and skilled Winnipeggers are.
But it was that first quality – resilience – that he came back to again and again. Winnipeg has faced big obstacles over and over in its history and scaled them together, whether it was floods or losing the Jets, he said, and through all of the city’s problems, it never abandons hope.

ASK EDDIE - July 20 2023
In case you missed Thursday’s Facebook stream of ASK EDDIE.
FNF prez Eddie Muller responds to film noir fan questions fielded by the Foundation's Director of Communications Anne Hockens. In this episode, we discuss “Pier 23” and its connection to the radio program “Pat Novack for Hire”, staircases in noir, “Quiet Please, Murder”, “Desire Me”, “Stolen Face”, familial noir, the noir credentials of “Sin City”, and more. Eddie weighs in on what the last film noir of the classic era was and the first neo-noir. Plus, we discuss the newly coined phrase homme stupide. We wind up the show with a discussion of teen noir. On the cat front, Charlotte does not appreciate the question about the cutest cat in film noir. Want your question answered in a future episode? We solicit questions from our email subscribers in our monthly newsletters. Sign up here. Everyone who signs up on our email list and contributes $20 or more to the Film Noir Foundation receives the digital version of NOIR CITY Magazine for a year. Donate here.
This week’s questions:
1. Was the Stanford Theater ever considered to host a NOIR CITY Film Festival? What film ranks in your mind as the most important yet to be restored? —Richard
2. My wife Linda enjoys watching film noir. She particularly gets a kick out of the sap who makes poor judgments after succumbing to the “charms” of a femme fatale. She calls such a dope an homme stupide. She was wondering if you have encountered this anywhere else or if she has coined a new noir phrase. —Michael, Post Falls, Idaho
3. I recently watched a 58-minute, B noir programmer titled PIER 23, featuring Hugh Beaumont as Dennis O’Brien. I also saw ROARING CITY another under-an-hour picture with two more cases. Spartan Productions also released a third Beaumont/O’Brien flick, DANGER ZONE - with the same format, all based on stories apparently recycled from old scripts for the radio program PAT NOVACK FOR HIRE. Have either of you seen any of the films or listened to the old Pat Novack program? —Michael, Post Falls, Idaho
4. Do you have any comments or opinions on QUIET PLEASE, MURDER?  —Liz
5. Any thoughts on DESIRE ME? —Dennis James from Champlain, NY
6. I don't remember either of you mentioning STOLEN FACE which I think of as a precursor to VERTIGO. Thoughts? —Joe from Suffolk County
7. Don't you think the kitten in THIS GUN FOR HIRE is the cutest cat in film noir? I thought I read that Hitler invited about Veronica Lake and two other beautiful Hollywood starlets to visit his castle in the 1930s and that they went. Have you ever heard of anything like this?—Arlene
8. Is it accurate to claim that the multi-story staircase shot we see so often in Noir is an example of German Expressionism? —Bob, Woodland, CA
9. Have you heard of the Netflix series BABYLON BERLIN? If so, what are your thoughts on it? —Adam from Indiana
10.  I consider Frank Miller's SIN CITY and SIN CITY A DAME TO DIE FOR Noir's on steroids.  Your opinion, please. —Chris
11. My question concerns one of my favorite films, 1978's FINGERS. Can you think of any other examples of "familial noir," where characters' lives are dictated by their parents or siblings or ancestors? —Kevin, Salt Lake City, UT
12. Do you consider, as some people do, that Welles’ brilliant TOUCH OF EVIL is the last noir film of the classic era? And what do you consider the first “neo noir”?—Bill Stewart of Winnipeg, Manitoba
13. With the 2021 NIGHTMARE ALLEY and now MARLOWE, I wonder if the current picture business is starting to find interest in reviving old noirs. To me, it seems that to cater to a modern, jaded audience, directors have been making these noirs quite violent. There's considerably less censoring -- and more technology -- in filmmaking, but do you envision any noirs being brought back today in a non-R-rated fashion, or would noir have been a more violent genre in the 40's if the production code and technology allowed for that? —Neil
14. I have a question about a small but important detail re: two of my absolute favorite remarks in Film Noir. They are both spoken in the crackling dialogue in OUT OF THE PAST.  I have always attributed these great lines to the fine screenwriter, Daniel Mainwaring, who wrote the book and screenplay for this movie. But some time ago, Eddie, I thought I heard you mention that another screenwriter came up with these ‘gems’.   If you have the answer, please let me know.  —Craig from Carlsbad
15. As I understand, OUT OF THE PAST was released in the UK under its original title: BUILD MY GALLOWS HIGH. I was curious if either of you have ever seen a UK print with that title and if there were any other differences in the UK prints? —Dennis, Champlain, NY.
16. In a recent episode, Eddie said that he hates teenagers and hated being one.

Exploring Canada's Natural Wonders
Tumblr media
Canada is an ideal travel destination for nature enthusiasts and adventurers, boasting vast and diverse landscapes. From the majestic Rocky Mountains to the rugged coastal cliffs on the Atlantic, Canada's natural wonders offer a breathtaking array of experiences that are as awe-inspiring as they are unforgettable.
Niagara Falls, one of the world's most famous natural wonders, is a majestic sight that any visitor should experience. The power and beauty of the waterfalls straddling the Canadian and American borders are awe-inspiring. Visitors can join the Maid of the Mist boat tour for a closer look at the impressive falls, enjoy a panoramic view from the Skylon Tower observation deck, or hike in Niagara Glen.
Banff National Park, situated in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, showcases Canada's breathtaking alpine scenery. The stunning landscape of towering peaks, turquoise glacial lakes, and lush valleys looks like something out of a fairy tale. Lake Louise, a beautiful jewel of the park, is famous for its crystal-clear waters that reflect the surrounding peaks. The smaller Lake Moraine is no less stunning, with its turquoise waters surrounded by snowcapped peaks. The park offers many adventure opportunities, like hiking through pine forests, biking along scenic trails, and paddling around the lakes.
For travelers looking to explore the coast of Nova Scotia, the Cabot Trail is a picturesque highway winding through the Cape Breton Highlands and offering breathtaking views of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Atlantic Ocean. The Cabot Trail is spectacular, with its rocky cliffs, verdant woods, and quaint seaside towns. Visitors can explore hiking trails like the Skyline Trail for panoramic coastline views or join whale-watching tours to see marine life up close.
On the east coast, in Newfoundland and Labrador, lies Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site showcasing the raw beauty of the Atlantic region. The dramatic landscapes here include fjords, towering cliffs, and dense forests reminiscent of Norwegian landscapes. The Tablelands, a striking feature of the park, offers a unique glimpse into the Earth's mantle, with its exposed reddish rocks. Adventurers can explore many hiking trails, like the Gros Morne Mountain trail, for panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
The Great Bear Rainforest on the west coast of British Columbia is a stunning example of natural beauty and power. This untouched rainforest is home to Canada's most beloved wildlife, such as the rare Kermode bear, also known as the "spirit bear." The rainforest boasts towering ancient trees, waterfalls, and fjords cutting through the coastline. Travelers can join wildlife-viewing safaris, boat rides through the glacial fjords, or guided nature walks.
Lastly, Canada is an ideal destination for watching the Northern Lights. The elusive and breathtaking phenomenon draws thousands of visitors to many countries in the Northern Hemisphere, and Canada provides several areas with high chances of spotting the stunning natural phenomenon. The Northern Territories, Manitoba, Yukon, and Nunavut are popular spots to watch the aurora borealis from autumn to spring. Newfoundland and Labrador, Ontario, and Alberta are other regions where travelers can experience the dancing lights, especially away from the cities.
Whether seeking adventure, tranquility, or a chance to marvel at extraordinary landscapes, travelers will find it in Canada's natural wonders. The primary requirements to embark on an unforgettable journey to explore Canada's natural marvels are well-equipped bags and hiking boots.

these remind me of the olden days of facebook notes! loved them then, love them now!
your name: Chani. (shaw-knee)
where in the world are you? Winnipeg, Manitoba. (But my heart is in Ontario.)
your favorite color: forest green and a deep light blue
a song that always puts you in a good mood: "Rather Be" by Clean Bandit. It has the best of vibes. A sort of bittersweet hope.
your favorite flower: Forget-me-nots and lily-of-the-valley.
it’s a beautiful sunny day and you’re going on a picnic with friends. what snack are you bringing to share? I love bringing my lavender lemonade. And I'd probably bring some homemade madelines.
bumblebees or butterflies? Bumble bees. I'm so infatuated with them. When I was a kid I collected them when I found their dead little bodies and kept them in a box with my snake skin and antlers. Like a good little witchling I suppose. Haha!
describe your ideal weather: sunshowers.
what are you reading right now? I have a couple on the go. Trying to finish a couple ARCs, I still haven't finished Spare, and I started Young Mungo.
museum date or nature walk? Museum. I freaking love museums. One of my first dates with my now wife was going to as many museums in our city in one day as we could!
it’s movie night in the park and your turn to choose, what are we watching? Music and Lyrics!
and finally, share some sunny words for your friends & followers: I'm going to take the opportunity to thank everyone I've interacted with in the gallavich fandom. I am often worried I am too earnest. I put my heart out too quickly. But here goes. I truly am so thankful to have been welcomed with such open arms. I haven't been doing well mental healthwise lately, and have felt so alone and isolated. I came back to a show I adored in the past and fell back in love with characters I'd long set aside. I pushed myself to take a leap and try to engage with other people who love these characters as much as I do and don't judge me for it. My reception into your fold has been the sweetest thing. Just know that when you talk about my stuff, refer to me by name, take the time to discuss with me, even just read my tags, it means more than I can properly express. All my love <3

Irún to San Sebastián
According to my phone I walked 32 km today with 26 km of the actual Camino. The day did not start as planned. I realized in the morning that I lost my pilgrim credential passport (to collect stamps as proof of your walk and also needed to stay in albergues. Luckily, this was a starting point so the albergue had them and they were still open when I ran there. The rain was in the forecast today but luckily it only rained before and after I did the walk. The initial climb from Irún was tough as always but the views were great. My pace was not even close to the 6 km an hour I could do in Manitoba. Met a couple of pilgrims on the trail, both called Robbie. We are on different schedules so won’t likely see them again.
Tumblr media
San Sebastián is beautiful as always. Went for a swim in mildly warm bay.
I had to leave city sightseeing until tomorrow afternoon once it stops raining.
Tomorrow is a rest/explore day. Hopefully not too much rain.

Can you swim in the Hudson Bay? “Most people think that you can't swim here, but you totally can. In fact, the water has never been cleaner.” Gershenhorn is part of a loosely knit group of West Siders who enjoy, when the weather warms up, freely frolicking in the Hudson. What language do they speak in Hudson Bay? Are there sharks in Hudson Bay? While it is rare to find a shark in the Hudson River, there have been several sightings over the years. Sharks may swim into the estuary from time to time but won't travel far up north, due to the freshwater. Why do people live in Hudson Bay? They make their living by fishing and hunting, some are in the trade industry and tourism. Hudson Bay was named after Henry Hudson, an Englishman who first explored the region looking for a northwestern passage to Asia at the beginning of the 17th century. Is Hudson Bay water clean? The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) has listed various portions of the Hudson as having impaired water quality due to PCBs, cadmium, and other toxic compounds. Can you drink from the Hudson River? Seven communities and over 100,000 people rely on drinking water from the Hudson River. Riverkeeper helped these seven communities — the City of Poughkeepsie, Village of Rhinebeck and the Towns of Esopus, Hyde Park, Lloyd, Poughkeepsie and Rhinebeck — organize as the Hudson River Drinking Water Intermunicipal Council. Is the Hudson River clean or dirty? Every New Yorker knows that while the Hudson is likely at least slightly cleaner than the East River (and certainly cleaner than the Gowanus Canal), it's by no means recommended for swimming or drinking. Mennonite Toponymy - How do Mennonites Name Their Places?
Tumblr media
Today begins Canada's Mennonite Heritage Week, which occurs anually during the second week of September. In light of this, I decided to analyze the names of Mennonite-founded (specifcally Russian Mennonite-founded) settlements to see what they have in common.
In short, they are quite simple. Mennonite-founded settlements are typically named and officially documented in High German (also known as Standard German) with two components: an adjective (sometimes geography-related) and a landform. Mennonite-founded settlements also often have Plautdietsch (the Mennonite Low German dialect) pronunciations, presumably used when speaking in Plautdietsch.
A few prominent examples are below:
Steinbach, Manitoba, Canada
Meaning: “stony brook”
“Stein” functions as both “stone” and “stony”
Bergthal, Bergthal Colony, Russian Empire (now Respublica, Ukraine)
Meaning: “mountain valley”
“Berg” in first position (rare)
“Thal” in second position
Grunthal, Manitoba, Canada
Meaning: “green valley”
Does not add “e” after “u” to replace “ü”
Also has Plautdietsch pronunciation: “Grientol” (/ˈ jrintol/)
“Thal” in second position
The rest of my examples are below (complete with annotations) and yes, they are all from either Ukraine and Canada - they have the best examples I could find that are Mennonite settlements specifically named by Mennonites - some Mennonite settlements in Latin America retain the Spanish names of the plots of land that they bought and others were named by/after non-Mennonite founders, such as Winkler, Manitoba, Canada. But anyways, here are the examples under the cut - but warning, it's rather long!
Blumenort, Manitoba, Canada
Meaning: “flower(s) place”
Dual usage of “ort” to be “garden” or “place”
Vegetation mention
Also has Plautdietsch pronunciation: “Bloomenuat” (/ˈblœmn̩ˌuɐ̯t/)
Friedensfeld, Manitoba, Canada
Meaning: “peaceful field”
“S” is unaccounted for
Friedrichsthal, Bergthal Colony, Russian Empire (now Fedorivka, Ukraine)
Meaning: “Friedrich’s valley”
Male personal name in first position
“Thal” in second position
Grossweide, Molotschna Colony, Russian Empire
Meaning: “big pasture”
Halbstadt, Molotschna Colony, Canada (now Molochansk, Ukraine)
Meaning: “half city” (etymology unclear)
Hochfeld, Manitoba, Canada
Meaning: “high field”
“Feld” in second position
Altitude adjective
Kleefeld, Manitoba, Canada
Meaning: “clover field”
Vegetation in first position
“Feld” in second position
Also has Plautdietsch pronunciation: “Kleefelt” (/ˈklɔɪ̯fɛlt/)
Originally named “Gruenfeld”
Uses “ue” to represent “ü”
Reinfeld, Manitoba, Canada
Meaning: “pure field”
“Feld” in second position
Beauty adjectives
Reinland, Manitoba, Canada
Meaning: “pure land”
Beauty adjectives
Rosenort, Manitoba, Canada
Meaning: “rose garden”
Dual usage of “ort” to be “garden” or “place”
Vegetation mention
Schanzenfeld, Manitoba, Canada
Named after Jacob Yost Shantz, who assisted Mennonites in Southern Manitoba
“Feld” in second position
Schoenfeld, Bergthal Colony, Russian Empire (now Ksenivka, Ukraine)
Meaning: “beautiful field”
“Feld” in second position
Beauty adjectives
“Ö” is replaced by “oe”
Schoenthal, Bergthal Colony, Russian Empire (now Novoromanivka, Ukraine)
Meaning: “beautiful valley”
“Thal” in second position
Beauty adjectives
“Ö” is replaced by “oe”
Waldheim, Saskatchewan, Canada
Meaning: “forest home”

Where Can You Find the Best Fly Fishing in Ontario
Ontario is a premier destination for fly fishing enthusiasts, boasting a myriad of pristine rivers, lakes, and streams that offer some of the best fishing opportunities in Canada. Whether you are a seasoned angler or a novice, Ontario's diverse waters promise an unforgettable fly fishing experience.
One of the most renowned locations for fly fishing in Ontario is the Grand River. Flowing through the heart of southwestern Ontario, the Grand River is celebrated for its healthy population of brown trout. The upper stretches, particularly around Fergus and Elora, are known for their excellent fly fishing conditions. The river's abundant hatches and clear waters provide an ideal habitat for trout, making it a hotspot for anglers seeking both quantity and quality catches.
For those looking to venture into northern Ontario, the Albany River offers an unparalleled wilderness fly fishing experience. This remote river system is accessible only by floatplane, ensuring an untouched and serene environment. The Albany River is home to an impressive variety of fish species, including brook trout, northern pike, and walleye. The pristine waters and breathtaking landscapes create a fly fishing adventure that is both challenging and rewarding.
Another top destination is the Nipigon River, renowned for producing the world record brook trout. Located in northwestern Ontario, the Nipigon River's cold, clear waters are perfect for fly fishing. Anglers flock to this river for the chance to catch trophy-sized brook trout and lake trout. The river's rugged beauty and diverse fish population make it a must-visit for any serious fly fisher.
In central Ontario, the French River is a fly fishing gem. Stretching from Lake Nipissing to Georgian Bay, the French River is a historic waterway with a rich variety of fish species. Anglers can expect to catch smallmouth bass, northern pike, and muskie in these waters. The river's scenic beauty, dotted with islands and lined with lush forests, adds to the allure of fly fishing in Ontario in this area.
The Credit River, located just outside of Toronto, is another excellent fly fishing spot in Ontario. Note: Eddie will not be able to answer questions posted during the livestream nor ones left on our social media accounts
This week’s questions:
Was the Stanford Theater ever considered to host a NOIR CITY Film Festival? What film ranks in your mind as the most important yet to be restored?
Richard
My wife Linda enjoys watching film noir. She particularly gets a kick out of the sap who makes poor judgments after succumbing to the “charms” of a femme fatale. She calls such a dope an homme stupide. She was wondering if you have encountered this anywhere else or if she has coined a new noir phrase.
Michael, Post Falls, Idaho
I recently watched a 58-minute, B noir programmer titled PIER 23, featuring Hugh Beaumont as Dennis O’Brien. I also saw ROARING CITY another under-an-hour picture with two more cases. Spartan Productions also released a third Beaumont/O’Brien flick, DANGER ZONE - with the same format, all based on stories apparently recycled from old scripts for the radio program PAT NOVACK FOR HIRE. Have either of you seen any of the films or listened to the old Pat Novack program?
Michael, Post Falls, Idaho
Do you have any comments or opinions on QUIET PLEASE, MURDER?
Liz
Any thoughts on DESIRE ME?
Dennis James from Champlain, NY
I don't remember either of you mentioning STOLEN FACE which I think of as a precursor to VERTIGO. Thoughts?
Joe from Suffolk County
Don't you think the kitten in THIS GUN FOR HIRE is the cutest cat in film noir? I thought I read that Hitler invited about Veronica Lake and two other beautiful Hollywood starlets to visit his castle in the 1930s and that they went. Have you ever heard of anything like this?
Arlene
Is it accurate to claim that the multi-story staircase shot we see so often in Noir is an example of German Expressionism? Bob, Woodland, CA
Have you heard of the Netflix series BABYLON BERLIN? If so, what are your thoughts on it?
Adam from Indiana
I consider Frank Miller's SIN CITY and SIN CITY A DAME TO DIE FOR Noir's on steroids.  Your opinion, please.
Chris
My question concerns one of my favorite films, 1978's FINGERS. Can you think of any other examples of "familial noir," where characters' lives are dictated by their parents or siblings or ancestors?
Kevin, Salt Lake City, UT
Do you consider, as some people do, that Welles’ brilliant TOUCH OF EVIL is the last noir film of the classic era? And what do you consider the first “neo noir”?
Bill Stewart of Winnipeg, Manitoba
With the 2021 NIGHTMARE ALLEY and now MARLOWE, I wonder if the current picture business is starting to find interest in reviving old noirs. To me, it seems that to cater to a modern, jaded audience, directors have been making these noirs quite violent. There's considerably less censoring -- and more technology -- in filmmaking, but do you envision any noirs being brought back today in a non-R-rated fashion, or would noir have been a more violent genre in the 40's if the production code and technology allowed for that?
Neil
I have a question about a small but important detail re: two of my absolute favorite remarks in Film Noir. They are both spoken in the crackling dialogue in OUT OF THE PAST.  I have always attributed these great lines to the fine screenwriter, Daniel Mainwaring, who wrote the book and screenplay for this movie. But some time ago, Eddie, I thought I heard you mention that another screenwriter came up with these ‘gems’.   If you have the answer, please let me know.
Craig from Carlsbad
As I understand, OUT OF THE PAST was released in the UK under its original title: BUILD MY GALLOWS HIGH. I was curious if either of you have ever seen a UK print with that title and if there were any other differences in the UK prints?
Dennis, Champlain, NY.
In a recent episode, Eddie said that he hates teenagers and hated being one. That said, are there any film noir movies with teen protagonists that you enjoy?
Craig from Nashville
