New Neighbour - Maylor Week Day 2
A/N: Here we are! Sadly, my only piece for this week but I tried to make it Count. Written for the prompt ‘dancing in the kitchen’ even though that’s hardly the Focus of this. Whoops. Thanks to @iamnotbrianmay for organizing this week!
Can also be read on AO3.
+++
Roger could faintly hear his phone ring from the edge of the pasture where his bag and the rest of his stuff was. He let out a sharp whistle, alerting his herding dogs Clover and Kit who immediately starting herding the sheep closer to the barn while he jogged towards his phone. A very unflattening picture of John was on his display and he chuckled lowly before accepting the call.
   “Deaks? What’s up?”
“Hey, sorry, I know you’re out with the sheep right now but I need to borrow your truck on Saturday.”
He frowned slightly and wiped the seat off his forehead, mentally already going through his to-do-list for the weekend. He knew John’s truck was still out of commission, waiting for replacement parts at Jim’s garage but the younger man also hadn’t worried about that because in their village, nobody really needed them anyway which is half of the reason only John and Roger had one in the first place.
“When and what do you need it for?”
“Somebody bought the Criston House and Miami asked me to fix the roof before the guy moves in but-”
“-but the supplies are at the factory, I got it. Yeah, you can have it, just bring it back by Monday.”
They exchanged a little bit of small talk then but both of them were busy and they quickly wrapped it up, not wanting to keep the other one. He put his phone back into his bag, quickly grabbed the rest of his things and walked back to the barn to have on last look at the sheeps, just making sure everything was alright, before calling his dogs and making his way back to the house.
He patted Clover’s head in passing, opening the door for his girls and they immediately slipped inside, making a beeline for the kitchen, knowing there were treats waiting for them. He followed them, laughing quietly to himself. After giving them their well-deserved treats he refilled their bowls and then went to take a shower.
Roger didn’t waste much time in the shower, he really only wanted to change into his sweatpants and curl up in front of his TV with something to eat. He knew he still had left-overs from back when he had been invited for dinner at Freddie’s parents place and he was already looking forward to eating it because his mother was an amazing cook.
Kit was trailing around his legs as he was heating the curry back up, wanting his attention and probably something of the meat but he chastised her softly and sent her off to play with her toys. He filled a bowl with his food and grabbed a beer and sat down heavily on the sofa, groaning happily. Immediately, Kit was with him again, jumping on the sofa and resting her head on his legs. Clover laid down on the floor in front of them, chewing on her teddy bear, her tail wagging happily. Roger turned on the TV, catching one of the crime shows he was following half-heartedly whenever he found the time to watch them.
“So, somebody bought the Criston House, huh?” He said to Kit, scratching behind her ear. “That’s a decision, I guess.”
The Criston House was an old house on the site next to Roger’s ranch. It had been empty for as long as Roger could remember and he hadn’t thought it would ever be sold but apparently he had been wrong. Bad for John as he was the guy people went to when things needed fixing but good for someone, Roger assumed.
The house was beautiful for a house that had been abandoned for over twenty years. Nice grey brickwork with ivy growing on it and a beautiful oak tree in the backyard and the river was running by closely. He had never been inside but from the outside, it looked like a nice house to live in. Except maybe for the roof which got a bit damaged over the years but John didn’t sound too worried about fixing it so it couldn’t be too bad.
“Looks like we’re getting a neighbour, girls.”
+++
A perk of having your friend work next to your house was definitely having lunch together. Most of the time, Roger didn’t have the time to sit down for a lunch but John had no issue with walking beside him, eating whatever lunch he had brought and holding Roger’s food when needed.
It was nice because it meant Roger had someone else then his dogs to talk to and work had kept both of them busy so they couldn’t hang out as much as they had wanted to. Neither of them was much of a gossip but then again, it was a small village and there wasn’t really much happening and so the most interesting thing was whoever didn’t make it to church on time. Or, in their case, the fact that Paul Prenter had let his car fix by a mechanic from a different town instead of going to Jim’s garage which was incredible stupid because Jim was the best mechanic Roger had ever seen and even if he couldn’t stand him, he’d get his car fixed by him.
“He’s being ridiculous.” John said, shaking his head.
“Yeah, but what’s new? I never really liked him anyway.”
John hummed in agreement, taking a bite out of his sandwich. Roger pulled his hair band out of his hair to gather them into a new ponytail since too many strands had escaped over time and had fallen into his face. John passed him a bottle of water and he drank almost half of it before giving it back. He nodded towards the Criston House.
“Have you met the guy who bought it yet?”
“Yep, met him a few days ago. Nice guy, tall, wild hair. Probably the type who gets on my nerve after a while but very polite.”
John shrugged, absently flipping the bottle in his hand a couple of times then put it back into his bag and shrugged again, this time pulling an unimpressed face. Roger snorted and gently knocked their shoulders together.
“But I guess we’ll see how he is soon enough. He wants to move in by, uh, end of August if I remember correctly.”
“Let me know if you remember the date. I don’t think Miami will let me live it down if I am late for a welcoming present again.”
He laughed and Roger slapped him playfully, grumbling under his breath.
“Well, you forgot the present for Freddie. And you literally annoyed us for months because you were so excited for him to move in. I don’t think Jim was so excited and they are married. And then you forgot the present.”
Roger threw his arms up and groaned in mock-frustration but John wrapped his arm around him, pulling him close and next thing he knew they were play wrestling and falling back into the grass, pushing and pulling at each other while yelling, cursing and laughing. John’s elbow digged harshly into his side and he let out a strangled breath before he managed to turn them around, effectively straddling his friend. Both of them were breathing hard but giggling, trying to outdo the other.
“Will you two ever grow up?” An old voice asked.
They quickly sat up- Roger flicking a clover out of John’s hair who stuck his tongue out at him- to see Mrs. Thompson, their former school teacher, standing just behind the fence, two big bags in her hands.
“I’m afraid not, Mrs .Thompson.” Roger chuckled.
She shook her head at them and they scrambled to their feet quickly, stuck somewhere between thinking this situation was embarrassing and being incredible amused by the whole thing.
“Do you need help with those bags, Mrs. Thompson?”
“At least your manners never were an issue.”
They quickly jumped over the fence which made Mrs. Thompson sigh quietly and shook her head again but she did let them take the bags from her, setting the way to her house not far from Roger’s.
+++
Roger carefully wrapped the cheese into wax paper, sealing it with a sticker and placed it into the basket to the jam and sausages and quickly grabbed the bottle of wine he had bought for this, also adding it to the other things.
He brushed his hair out of his face. He really needed a haircut.
The basket was looking really nice and he wiped his hands on his shirt before grimacing and deciding he needed to change before he could go over to the new neighbor. He washed his hands and quickly changed into something he hadn’t been wearing out for taking care of the sheep. Only then he grabbed the basket and walked over to the house.
John had done a good job with the roof, not that Roger was an expert in these kind of things but it looked better than it did before. It had also been John who reminded him about the new guy moving in. Usually, he would have noticed things because a big moving truck was kind of a dead giveaway but Roger had been out of town yesterday and he was thankful for John because he would have forgotten it again.
Sometimes, he missed the big city. Nobody really expected you to know everyone or give every new neighbour something for moving in and nobody gossiped about you just because someone came late for church or whatever town festival was happening. On the other hand, he loved his hometown and he did move back here after all. He really couldn’t imagine himself in a different job besides being a sheep owner.
It took only a moment for his neighbour to get the door and Roger’s kind of fake, polite smile grew into something much more sincere.
He was pretty. Long, dark curly were framing his face and he had gentle, dark eyes. His sweater was too short, leaving his wrist and part of his lower arm bare and there was just a sliver of skin between his pants and the sweater but Roger quickly looked up again, not wanting to be caught staring.
“Hello, I’m Roger and I live next door. I, ah, just wanted to drop off a welcoming gift.”
The man smiled softly and took the basket from him, looking it over quickly.
“This is lovely but, um, I’m actually vegetarian.”
“Oh, sorry, I just take the sausages back then.”
They shared an awkward smile during the exchange and Roger cursed himself inwardly for making this meeting weird already.
“Oh, I’m Brian, by the way. Do you want to come in for a cup of tea?”
   “I’d love to.”
The house was nice. Roger had never seen it from the inside before but he assumed a house that had been empty for twenty years couldn’t look that great but Brian had done a nice job with the interior. Not that he had any real idea about what good interior design looked like since his house was basically a mismatched collection on old furniture still from his grandparents and the ikea furniture he had brought with him when he moved back after college. Brian’s furniture seemed to fit together most of the time, though, and everything was neat and tidy.
   “You have a beautiful house.”
   “Thank you.”
The kitchen had a door to the backyard and Roger could see a couple of his sheep grazing close to the fence and watched them while Brian made the tea.
“Do the sheep belong to you?” Brian asked.
He pulled two mugs out of a cabinet, looking to him for a moment before putting the kettle on the oven.
“Yeah, I sell their wool, milk and meat to others in the village. The cheese is made from milk of my sheep and so were the sausages but that’s not that important.”
“I only have jasmine tea and mint tea unpacked so far so, uh, I hope that’s fine.”
Roger nodded and smiled at him. Brian honestly didn’t look like the type of guy who would like to move into a village in the middle of nowhere. The only people who move out here were couples with young children because ground was cheaper here but except that, the people who lived here were the same families that had lived here since what seemed like forever. Some people, like Roger, left for a while to go to college and get a degree and some stay and don’t come back but some do.
Brian poured some water into the mugs and put both of them on the table, followed by the tea bags and some sugar and milk. Roger took a mint tea bag and added two sugars to it.
“So, what brings you here?” He asked.
“Ah, I’m a writer but I’m kind of stuck so I decided maybe a change of scenery would help.” Brian shrugged, then chuckled softly. “But I guess I’ll see that with time.”
Roger made an interested sound, his eyebrows lifting as he gestured for him to continue. Brian blushed. He laughed, sounding quite embarrassed.
“It’s nothing really. I wrote two books before and they did pretty well all things considering but the next one just doesn’t want to come to me as it seems.” He shrugged again and waved his hand through the air. “I just want to bring it to a good end, that’s all.”
He smiled, looking almost shy and Roger decided to prod a little bit because not only did it actually interest him- he didn’t always had the time to get into a book but he used his limited free times to find some good reads- but Brian seemed embarrassed talking about it. It was kind of sad, in a way, as he was obviously passionate about his writing and when Roger was passionate about something, he would talk about it with everybody, given the chance.
Brian was hesitant at first, quietly telling him about his Science Fiction novels but quickly realized that Roger really wanted to hear about it and his voice grew more sure and eventually, he was basically rambling, gesturing animatedly.
“That sounds really cool.” Roger said, drinking the rest of his tea. “But I’m afraid I have to go back to work now.”
“Thank you for stopping by. And thank you for the presents!”
+++
The next time Roger saw Brian was in his backyard and he waved at him from the distance, a grin appearing on his face when Brian waved back. He jogged over to where the fence separated his backyard from his pasture.
“Hey! How have you been doing? Settled in nicely?”
Brian smiled and nodded. Roger spotted a watering can in his hand.
“Hello, Roger. How are you doing?”
Roger jumped up the fence, sitting down on top of it, legs dangling above the ground as he grabbed the wood to steady himself. Kit and Clover trotted over to see what he was doing.
“Oh, good, busy with work, you know.”
He wiped his forehead, his shirt clinging to his body from the sweat and nodded at the watering can.
   “Planting something?”
“Oh, no, I don’t think I could.” Brian laughed. “It’s just pretty hot and I figured the bushes might need some water.”
Roger took him in, with his half-unbuttoned shirt, leaving his collarbone exposed, that was haphazardly tucked into his jeans and his curls were messy, looking as if he had been running his hand through it several times. He looked tired, too, dark shadows beneath his eyes.
“If you want to know how to plant things, you should talk to Jim. He owns the garage but also has a great garden. It’s relaxing, he says.”
Brian crouched down and reached through the fence to pet Clover’s head who yipped happily.
   “I don’t really think I will. What’s their names?”
“That’s Clover and this is Kit.”
He watched him scratch both dogs’ chins for a while, occasionally glancing back to his sheep. Brian cooed at the dogs for a moment longer, then he straightened up again. Roger smiled at him.
+++
Brian was out in his backyard alot and Roger often found himself caught up in conversation with him, idly chatting over anything as he watched over his sheep. Sometimes, they would talk about Brian’s books or Roger’s work but they quickly found other things to talk about like music and animals among other things.
Having a neighbour was nice, Roger realized. And Brian was nice, Roger might have developed a tiny crush on the man but nobody could really blame him because he was handsome and intelligent and didn’t know how to button shirts. It was distracting.
He started to look forward to seeing Brian, seeking excuses to keep talking with him even if it meant he had to miss his crime shows.
+++
Roger watched how Brian was cutting apples and took out a big bite out of one of the leftover apples as he sat on top of the kitchen counter. Brian was cutting them with practiced precision, his sleeves rolled up and Roger cocked his head to the side, humming softly.
His hair was pulled back into a ponytail so it wouldn’t hang into his face as he made his pie.
“Okay, help me out for a second: What even is a fall festival?” He asked.
Roger chuckled and wiped some juice off his chin.
“It’s just good food, music and lots of dancing. It’s fun and just the people hanging out.”
“I’m going to have to skip the dancing, I guess, but the rest sounds like fun.”
He frowned slightly before putting his apple to the side and jumping off the counter, clapping his hands.
“Come ‘ere. Dancing is easy. I can show you.”
Brian stopped cutting for a moment and laughed, shaking his head. Roger just clapped again, wiggling his fingers at him.
   “Come on, Bri! It’s fun!”
He shot him a long look, then sighed, placed the knife carefully to the side and wiped his hands on a towel. Roger’s grin grew and he quickly grabbing him before he could change his mind again, pulling him close. He put one of his hands on his hip and placed his own on Brian’s shoulder. Brian’s hands were surprisingly rough.
“I guess you’ll be the one guiding so you put your hands like this.”
He started humming a song he knew would be played at the festival and just moved them along the steps of the dance. Brian was clumsy at first, stumbling over his own feet and stepping on his toes a couple of times but soon he caught up to it and they were dancing somewhat decently.
“There we go! You can dance!”
   “Barely, I can barely dance.”
Roger laughed, looking up at him. He was close enough now to smell him which should be way weirder than it was and he tried not to sniff him too obviously. It was a nice smell, clean and fresh but nothing Roger could clearly identify.
At some point, they had stopped dancing, more swaying back and forth in place. Only then, Roger noticed that they were actually really close to each other and that Brian’s hand had slipped from on his hip to the small of his back. His heart jumped in his chest and a blush rose on his cheeks. Hoping Brian wouldn’t notice it, he lowered his head a little bit, his forehead almost touching his shoulder.
He took a deep breath, trying not to immediately expose himself. Brian cleared his throat.
“Is there anything else than dancing?”
They were still swaying in place, the apples forgotten on the counter. Roger looked up quickly, shooting Brian a short smile.
“Uh, not really. It’s mostly about the food, the music and the dancing.”
Brian hummed softly, nodding to himself.
“I like that, I think. This kind of dancing, at least.”
   “What? What kind of dancing?”
Brian smiled at him, his hand squeezing his. Roger swallowed hard at the look on his face. He couldn’t quite discern it but it looked somewhat fond.
   “Slow dancing. It’s nice.”
There was a short, heavy silence as they were just looking at each other and then he chuckled, licked his lips and leaned down, pressing a short, chaste kiss to Roger’s lips. Roger blinked, taken by surprise and they stopped swaying, just standing close to each other as they kept looking at each other.
“Was that okay?” Brian asked quietly.
“Yes, yes it was. Completely okay.”
Another moment of silence followed, then they broke into giggles, leaning into each other. Roger hid his face in Brian’s chest, the taller man’s hand on his back gently pulling him closer and he wrapped his arms around him, his face red from laughter.
   “That was awful!” He laughed.
“Am I that bad of a kisser?”
Roger shook his head and pushed back far enough so he could lean up and kiss him again. It was a longer kiss this time, both of them moving with purpose this time but it was still chaste, just shy lips moving against each other. Brian’s hand slid up his back, cupping his neck.
They pulled away from slowly, smiling dopily at each other.
   “Better?”
Roger nodded, stealing another quick kiss before taking a full step back. He laced their fingers together and squeezed them.
“Uh, let’s finish your pie? And then maybe practice some more dancing?”
Brian laughed, throwing a quick look over his shoulder where the apples were and nodded.
   “Yeah, good idea.”
Roger sat back down on the counter and Brian went back to cutting the rest of the apples but they kept stealing glances at each other, unable to stop smiling.
“We could, uh, go to the festival together?” Roger asked.
   “I’d love that.”

Seven Minutes in Heaven
A DT Holiday Fic Request
A Walt Jodell Fic
Rating: Mature
Word count: 10,872
Warnings: none
Summary: A not-so-innocent encounter at the annual Christmas party finally blows the lid off Walt and Katty's waning relationship.
December 29
She was freshly bathed, loose-limbed and pouring herself another glass of wine when someone knocked hard on her kitchen door.
“Fuck!” she jumped, and poured wine onto her robe. She groaned and swatted at herself. She was gonna smell like a booze factory. “Jesus, who is it? It’s after 11pm-” She yanked the door open, and Walt stood on her porch, hands deep in the pockets of his wool coat.
“Walt?” she said, still wiping at herself. His eyes traveled from her flushed face and down her body. She suddenly remembered she was wearing only a robe. She wrapped her arms around herself and cleared her throat.
“May I come in?” he said, then stepped into her kitchen before she could balk. She closed the door behind her and sighed. She knew it might happen. She felt it would, and she wasn’t sure whether she was pleased or not.
He looked at her counter, where white wine dripped from the red stone to the floor.
“Having a nightcap, eh?” he said, and gave her a crooked grin.
“What are you doing here?” she said, then started to clean aggressively – she needed to do something with her hands.
“I was, um – I was just having a quick closing meeting with Venessa,” he gesticulated awkwardly. “The office is just around the way. Odd you’d choose to continue working so far away,” he said, smiling again. “Nessa lives near me – in fact, just a few miles away. We were discussing that if you were both open to it, I could just pull an ol’ switcheroo-”
“No,” she said quickly as she squeezed the dishrag into the sink. “It’s not as easy as that. I have my people there. We work well together. Just pulling up roots and leaving would be weird.”
“Oh,” he said. “Yes.” His smile faded. “It was just an idea. To make things easier for both of you.”
She gave him a sidelong glance. “You live in Stockton,” she said. The office she managed was just a five minute drive from his house, so he was in almost daily. Although at first she thought he was dropping in because he wanted to micromanage her, she knew better now.
“Yep. It’s a great place to raise a family,” he said, rubbing at the front of his coat. “Safe, great weather, good schools. The whole package. Katty loves it-” he gasped, as if trying to swallow the last words back.
That bitch doesn’t love anything, she said underneath her breath as she walked out of the kitchen.
“How is Kathryn?” she said as she walked into her bedroom to put on clothes. She didn’t care, but it was polite conversation. She ripped off her robe and started rooting in her bureau for a bra when she heard a soft exhalation. Walt stared at her from her from the threshold, his face a rictus of desire.
December 23
“Oh, go on. It’ll be fun,” Venessa said, poking at her side. She already had too much, but she was working on another glass of wine. “I know there’s several people here you want to touch inappropriately.” Nessa’s eyes narrowed conspiratorially.
Walt stood nearby, holding up the wall and nursing a beer. He looked back and forth between the women, following the conversation. Kathryn walked up, devastating in a hunter green velvet strapless dress. Her hair was pulled up and her makeup was flawless, but her lips were pinched into a perpetual bitchface.
“I don’t know, Venessa,” she said, putting her arm around her waist. “There’s not a lot of men to go around.” She gave Walt a pointed glance.
“Look at you, being all heteronormative,” Vanessa said, taking a healthy sip of wine.
“You make a good point. The bottle stops where it stops. It shouldn’t matter whether it’s a woman or a man,” Katty said, raising her brow. “I myself have kissed a girl or two, and I liked it.”
One of Nessa’s co-workers, a loud, oversexed 20-something man with slicked back hair and an ugly Christmas sweater hooted and waved around his beer. “Let’s do it!”
“Don’t get too excited, chief. Any minutes in the closet with a mouthbreathing nerd is hardly heavenly,” Katty said. He wilted. Vanessa snorted. Walt was walking to the kitchen for another beer when she yelled out to him. “Don’t you slink off, Walt. You’re playing too.”
“I don’t think so,” he said, shaking his head. He wore a terrible, over-tinseled sweater that Orvis decorated and Katty made him wear. A santa hat drooped on his head.
She stared at him, eyes narrowed. “What, are you too good to socialize with the underlings?” she said, waving her arm magnanimously at the small crowd in their basement. He winced and grabbed her arm, guiding her to a corner.
“It’s not that. Mostly, it’s because it would break at least 20 different local and federal labor laws,” he said.
“Oh shut it,” she said, pushing him away. “Haven’t you watched television lately? You’re just a chicken.”
His lips pursed. “Chicken?” he said. “What are we, 12? It’s not a good idea, Katty.”
“I think it’s great idea,” she said loudly and broke from his grip. She wrapped her arm around another acquaintance, a young junior accountant named Megan and squeezed. “Where’s the bottle?” She eyed the young redhead rapaciously.
He sidled up next to her, his jaw working. She didn’t know why, but she wanted to touch him. His shoulder. His twitching jaw. His tinseled chest. Kathryn’s presence felt like a naked, too-bright lightbulb. It was headache inducing, and she wondered how he dealt with her all the time. She was beautiful, but what did it matter if you couldn’t even look her in the eye?
“Spin the bottle. That’s nostalgic,” she said, taking a sip of her wine.
“Yeah. Sure,” he said. He drained his beer. He looked her up and down. “Where’s Toto?” he said, pointing at her glittery red shoes.
“Ha ha ha,” she said, smirking. “That’s not one I’ve heard a million times.”
“Have you made a wish yet?” he said, warming up. “You just have to click your heels, Dorothy.”
She rolled her eyes. “I wish the merriment was over already, how about that?”
“Me too,” he said frankly, and sighed. There was silence, and leaned against the wall. Beyond the smell of booze and hors d’oeuvres, she could smell him. She took a deep breath. It was so unlikely for a man dressed as a parody of Elf on a Shelf to smell so deliciously masculine.
“We could escape. You can wish it with your special shoes,” he said, and winked at her.
“Lay off my bitchin’ holiday style choices already. In any case, maybe you could-” she pointed at his outfit -”what mythical powers does the elf have, anyway?”
“He doesn’t have any. He lives in fear of the almighty power of Santa, and lives at the mercy of her whims,” he said. He chuckled, but it was dry. They fell quiet again as they watched people gather around the glass coffee table. An empty syrah bottle sat on its side in the middle.
Kathryn clapped to get everyone’s attention. “Alright, this is the way it’s gonna go,” she said, sitting on Venessa’s lap. “We’ve written down different acts and dropped them in this adorable holiday themed wine glass-” She shook it and smiled. “There will be two spins to make it really random. First for person one, and second for person two, you get it.” People whispered with excitement.

Pain, Bohai felt nothing but pain.
His eyes due to crying, his head due to the lack of sleep and his heart,
due to the loss of his comrade.
He sat at the beach, as he looked at the ocean that reflected the glistening moon tonight wit a bottle of beer in one hand.
The cold ocean breeze, the sound of the waves and his occasional chugging were the only ones that you could feel and hear.
Bohai was there, but it felt like he wasn't.
Physically, he sat there with sad eyes.
But emotionally?
He wasn't.
He's been crying for days, or maybe it was weeks? Mayhaps, it had been months already.
He had already loss count of how many bottles of beer he'd had in the past year. He just knew it was enough for the factory to temporary stop distributing to stores due to 'insufficient stocks', as they would like to say it.
He always sat close to Nari's house, so he always heard the muffled cries of a baby. Maybe about 3 months old, he wasn't sure.
Bohai loss track of time already, for pete's sake, he didn't even know what month it was already.
Or how many months he'd been gone, or maybe it was years?
All Bohai knew was that he needed to lead, he needed to fight, he needed to be responsible.
Although deep down he knew that he was never fit to become a leader, he never saw himself as someone that would lead 5 other men.
Heck, he didn't even have enough time to actually grieve for his fallen comrade.
He was still in denial, he was still angry.
He has been spiraling in the stages of grief, but he never made it to the last stage.
Acceptance.
He couldn't accept the death of his leader, of his brother, of his best friend.
Maybe someday he can, maybe someday he'll accept what was Kiho's fate.
Maybe he just needed time to think?
Or maybe, he needed to do this.
He drew in the sand for a couple more minutes before making the executive decision of doing what Amah had asked him to.
Erase Ko Nari's memories.
The words lingered in his mind, not too much to make him want to shut it off like Chio to his mother, though.
But enough to bother him, to keep him awake at night and to make him zone out in the morning when Mama is serving breakfast.
He finished the last bottle before standing up and walking towards Nari's house.
It was just a cottage by the shore, it wasn't too big nor too small. Just the right size for raising a kid.
He knocked anxiously, even when he'd drunk 14 bottles of beer, it was still not enough to drown the guilt that slowly overtook him.
The door opened, revealing Nari that held a small baby boy in her hands.
Before she could say anything, he spoke. I'm sorry.
I did it.
Amah just sat quietly, nodding before he excused himself.
He sat in his bed, a heavy feeling in his chest. He had just erased Wang Kiho and Wang Yuze from Wang—Ko Nari's brain.
He left Yuze in an orphanage, which was what Amah had instructed him to do.
He felt the guilt of doing it, and so, that night he slept in his Hyung's bed and wore his old sweater.
Morning came, but this time it felt oddly, cold, perhaps colder than it already was.
He left, Aiguo stood from the door, a serious look plastered on his face.
He looked at him confused, not knowing as to who he was pertaining to.
Diyu, he left.
Aiguo repeated, but this time slowly. Bohai sat for a few minutes before running into Diyu's room, or what was left of his room.
It was empty, the warmth that once came from it was now gone. The room felt cold, empty, lonely.
As if no one slept there in the first place.
Bohai let himself fall to the floor.
Selfish, he thought.
Diyu was selfish for leaving him.
But then again, it's the only act of selfishness he ever did in his life.
He remained sitting on the floor, crying once more as he thought to himself.
What did I ever do to you all, to make me suffer this much pain?

Home for the Holidays
The plans to move to San Diego were scrapped earlier in the year. The job offer was rescinded, and thankfully the house never got to market. Dad was quickly re-appointed to City Council, and he resumed his position with the Drackett Company. Mom renegged on her two week notice at the hospital, and life returned to its previous rhythm.
Angry and disappointed in Jim, I invited my friend Ken to Cincinnati with me for Thanksgiving. In Ken, I picked up another lonely soul, and thought I was rescuing him from a miserable holiday weekend. Ken was excited to see another city, and wanted to know all about it. He was enthusiastic about seeing the country and wanted to know all about where I grew up. I drove the Pinto, and we dropped a freshman in Cleveland along our way.
All the anguish I’d suffered the previous spring had been for naught. My bedroom was still intact – never touched by any movers. The boxes I’d packed were moved to the attic and forgotten. I’d said good-bye to my life in Wyoming and moved on. And yet, that Thanksgiving weekend I was dumped right back into the thicket of drama, but couldn’t fully participate because of Ken’s presence. I needed to be a good hostess to Ken, and yet old friends wanted news and explanations. It was a delicate balance that was awkward at best. Ken and I argued, and I told my friends, “I’ll explain at Christmas.”
 *          *          *
After Thanksgiving, the tension between Jim and me grew worse. He was busy with work and classes; I was busy with classwork. I avoided him as much as possible, although we still worked together on the scholarship. Instead I spent time with other friends; played gin-rummy with Bart, Scrabble with Craig and his girlfriend Jilda. I lunched with Lawrence, enjoying his company. I struggled to pass Botany, grabbing help from a classmate who walked me through the physics of transpiration. The semester ended, and I returned to Cincinnati for Christmas and winter break.
At the end of the term, when exams were over, I packed up the Pinto with a suitcase full of dirty clothes and my rabbit, Homer with all the food and bedding changes along with her litter box. I carried my passenger as far as Cleveland –delivering him to his own family on my way through Ohio. I arrived home late, after dark anyway, and unpacked the car.
That Christmas, 1986, we celebrated a rare convergence of immediate family. Tom and his wife Janet had spent the fall in New Haven, CT. Tom enrolled in one of Yale’s Master’s degree programs, but shortly after their arrival in August, they realized their mistake. Despite the prestige of the school name, the reality of living in New Haven on a grad student salary was not something they needed or wanted to do. So after the semester, salvaging what credits he could, Tom and Janet would drive back to Oregon and Oregon State University – Salem was home.
I presume Mom called Jack and pleaded, “Since Tom and Janet and Susan are going to be in Cincinnati for Christmas can you and Cheryl possibly make it so we can have all the family together?”  Whether such a plea was made or not, Jack and Cheryl were in Cincinnati for a few days.
David stopped by the house Christmas Eve afternoon, and after a brief greeting with my parents, we retreated to what was my bedroom-not-my-bedroom and chatted. Whatever the topic, the discussion became heated and David knocked the rabbit off the bed to the floor. Angry, I suggested he leave and he did.
Later that evening, my brothers expressed interest in meeting my pet rabbit. Engrossed in a television program, I sent them up to my room to introduce themselves.
“Is the rabbit supposed to be stiff?”  David’s cuff of the creature accidently killed it, and Jack and Tom buried it in the back yard. I never asked where.
That Christmas I gave wildly inappropriate gifts, children’s toys and games; useless stuff in the attempt to re-capture childhood. Nobody complained, but I’m sure the plastic went to the garbage or the GoodWill.
After Christmas Jack and Cheryl quickly returned to their jobs in Pennsylvania, and Tom and Janet continued their journey to Oregon. In the days following, I visited a few other friends – Julie, Erin, Valli – but spent New Year’s Eve alone in my parent’s house. I just could not handle another gathering in Moreno’s basement.
Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, perhaps as a consolation for the job and transfer debacle, Mom and Dad acquired a new car, a 1986 Mustang convertible GT, five speed standard transmission with cruise control, air conditioning factory installed sound system, with cassette deck. Dad arranged a business trip to Florida for early January. Mom and I packed our suitcases – my summer clothes were at “home” in Rochester, so I packed jeans, cotton sweaters and turtlenecks – and we took turns driving I-75 south to Florida through Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia. We picked Dad up in Tampa, and while he rode in the passenger seat, Dad had me drive his new car in heavy traffic across the Tampa Bay Bridge. I was terrified.
After a few days touring the Sarasota environs, Dad flew back to Cincinnati and Mom and I made the long drive back north. Once in Cincinnati, I did laundry, packed the rabbit cage and paraphernalia into the Pinto and drove back to Rochester, stopping in Cleveland to pick up my passenger.
 *          *          *
Despite our break-up, and the obnoxious way he treated me, I still cared for Jim. He is human, and we did share many laughs and good times together. I learned quite a bit from him. I bought him a Christmas present, knowing he would enjoy it. While I no longer wanted intimacy, I took pleasure in making those around me happy. Jim mistook my gift as a sign of reconciliation. “Oh she’s giving me gifts, we must be back together.” Nothing could have been further from the truth. I gave him gifts of consolation, “I’m outta here, but you can have these to remember me.” That tired, “we can still be friends” attempt.
 Chapter 1
Drunken Agony
In January the guys threw yet another party in their suite – another gathering with loud music (they hooked up as many speakers as they could to Bart’s stereo and pooled their CD and album collections for ‘good tunes’) and lots of alcohol. Someone bought a case or two of longnecks, and I threw caution to the wind and nursed a beer. Can’t stand the stuff, but valiantly tried to sip my way through a whole one. I labeled the bottle so I knew it was mine, and kept it close at hand. I sat and chatted with friends, talking about what classes we were taking for the spring term, which professors we had, and what we had done for our winter breaks.
I was able to impress friends with a great story of driving down I-75 in a brand new Mustang convertible. Through Kentucky and Tennessee, Georgia and Florida, Mom and I cruised in a man’s dream car. We visited an orange grove, spent a day at the beach, toured the Circus Museum. Nothing exciting in and of itself, but it’s fun to tell people, “Yea, I drove to Florida and back in a 1986 Mustang Convertible.”
I planted myself in a corner of the couch, Bart parked in an adjacent chair, and unbeknownst to me he kept re-filling my beer. I nursed that beer for the entire evening, thinking I’d had only one. Sad, but I never noticed Bart pouring beer from his bottle into mine. It started out as a joke. How long do you think we can get away with this? They (Bart, Craig, Stephen Paul, Chris, the “other” Jim, Keith and Andy) were all in on it. Elbows nudging, and eyes glancing, they passed the joke along, and I was oblivious. Finally, after who knows how much I had consumed, I announced I was drunk and needed fresh air. Who would take me for a walk? Bart volunteered.
Yes, I was drunk, and so was he, and what happens when two college students get drunk together? Osculation. We trekked across campus to check out the new library construction. We traipsed through an opening in the fence, climbed over cinderblocks, two-by-fours, piping, and bales of wire. We climbed the industrial stairwell that had been erected, going as high as we dared to get a view of the layout. My balance was challenged, and Bart steadied me. I turned and he started kissing. I welcomed the new feeling, gentle, cautious, and kind. After my head stopped spinning so quickly, Bart walked me back to the party. I was just minutes from passing out, so crashed in Bart’s bed in his loft.
That was a last beginning. Bart was kind. Over the weeks Bart cared for and protected me. He never forced himself on me, and when I panicked, he stopped and held me. When I got angry, he let me pound away at his chest, and hugged me all the tighter for my pain. I was very angry at Jim, told Bart my story, and found an ally. Our behavior confounded our friends and they questioned our closeness, “How could you do this to Jim?” “Do you see how cruel you are to Jim?” “Do you know how much Jim is hurting?”
Jim’s last written correspondence was a series of despondent essays about all the wrongs I committed toward him. How I ripped his heart out and didn’t show any remorse. I had mistreated him terribly, calling him “it” and not supporting him through his challenging academic term. Finally, he admits that perhaps, just perhaps, he committed an egregious error. That maybe he misjudged my behavior. Perhaps he was in the wrong. Jim acknowledged that it had taken a tremendous amount of strength for me to discard him. A strength I had not had at the beginning of our relationship. Sure, the sex had been a power trip for him, but he had never physically harmed me, so could it have really been so bad? He promised he would never again repeat such behavior, and then admonished me not to share his confessional words with anyone. They were for my eyes only. I shudder at those memories.
“I guess one reason I’m writing this is to convince myself that I’m not quite as evil as you think I am. I must have hurt you pretty bad for you to go and go out with Bart right off the bat without a “period of mourning” or anything like that. I know that you need someone with you or you get even more unhappy, but still. I hope sometime you sit down and think about all the things we did together. I told you everything about every bit of me, Susan, you know it all. I showed you all of my favorite places, got you to do all of my favorite activities, and had you meet all of my favorite people. I took you camping, skiing and biking. I took you to my church to meet my friends there. I helped you write a term paper in 5 hours and I helped you pass New Testament. I tried to encourage you to get out and do things on your own. I took you to the beach. I had you at my house 3 or 4 times. I took you to Boston to meet my closest friends. Do you remember any of that?”
<snip>
“I still can’t believe you don’t feel the way I do. Either I hurt you so much that you really do dislike me, or I was horribly mistaken about the depth of your feelings about me. Here I am still trying to decide whether I can ever look at another girl and not think about you, and you’re already spending the nights with another guy.
If what we did made you feel “used” then I am terribly, terribly sorry. I have vowed to never let that happen again in any future relationship of mine, and I mean it. Maybe it took you breaking up with me for me to do that.”
<snip>
“I really don’t think it is all my fault, we are both responsible. I know I made you miserable by “using” you, but I think you’ve gotten me back. You often insulted me in public, and you used to call me “it” instead of “he” Basically, you never gave two shits about any of the things I care about, and you made no attempt to hide it.”
<snip>
“Here’s my analysis of how she feels:  She’s unhappy. I have been using her, I haven’t spent enough time with her and I don’t talk enough to suit her. She hates her classes, she hates where she’s living, she’s homesick. In general there is very little here that appeals to her. (There used to be one thing here that appealed to her, and that was me. But I don’t have that effect anymore.)”
<snip>
“When she started going out with me, she could hardly live without me. It must have taken a lot of strength and courage to go from that complete need, to breaking up with me and not looking back. On the other hand it would take more courage still to look back and see what I’m doing, how I’m feeling, and she hasn’t done that.
I know I’ve gotten bitterly sarcastic, but I certainly hope that if I ever give this to Susan that she doesn’t get upset by it. I know she’d be angered by the sentence, “New boyfriend means all problems solved!” I guess the feelings behind that last paragraph are ample demonstration of why we broke up: her simplicity, and my sarcasm and lack of respect toward her because of that simplicity. OH! But there are so many worse things to be than what she is. I’ll take her simplicity any day over the hateful, coy, condescending thoughts I see in so many people. I really did love her, I just didn’t respect her.
But I liked her as well as those things (love and respect); and I want to keep on liking her. Obviously she realized a while back that I didn’t respect her, and has reacted strongly against me. I can’t really blame her. The sex was just a manifestation of that lack of respect on my part. What I have done is horrible, but still I hope she forgives me, because now I want to be friends with her.”
  *          *          *
Jim’s version of events is decidedly different from mine. He blames me for his melancholy. I blame him for not recognizing his own poor behavior toward me. I knew what I was doing was hurtful, and did it on purpose. He claims ignorance. He should have known better. We’ll never reconcile.

21 People Reveal The *Very* NSFW Scene They’ve Run Into In Broad Daylight
1.
Saw a lady accidentally drop her baby face-first in the street.
The baby was not pleased.
2.
So, lived in New Orleans for a while. Worked as a bartender on Bourbon St. I was leaving work around 6:30 am. The sun was coming up and there was a fairly decent mix of people either just starting their day, or going home. One of the strip clubs closer to Canal St. has pictures of scantily clad women on the outside of the building.
There was a homeless guy, pants around his ankles like some little kids do at urinals, straight up dick in his hand jerking it in broad daylight in the middle of the sidewalk to some of the pictures on the building. Did not make eye contact and quickly went to the other side of the street. In hindsight, the sidewalk was probably his bedroom, so…
3.
Homeless lady spraying liquid shit all over a wall.I was walking down the street, rounded a corner, and there she was.
4.
Mine was a Chinese tourist who didn’t want to wait in line for the bathroom, not even in the washroom but right across the hall from it.
5.
I used to live in a second floor flat with an ex girlfriend and the flat overlooked the back garden of the pub next door. One evening I’m in our bedroom and hear a load of noise coming from the pub garden.
I peer out of the window half expecting there to be a fight or at least something of an aggressive nature happening since it was a pretty dire pub. Instead I see a semicircle of people cheering on some stripper who is in the midst of losing her clothes for some guy who’s sat in the middle of this semi circle and on one of the pub benches. Once she’s lost all her clothes she then bends over, arse to the crowd, unzips this guy’s trousers and gives him a blow job right there in the garden.
This was not the most surprising thing. What surprised me the most was while she was bent over, one of the guys watching turns to his mate with a big grin (I can’t hear what anyone is saying, only the cheering)…he then walks up behind the stripper and proceeds to slide the neck of his beer bottle into her pussy and bottle fucks her with no warning whatsoever…
I expected her to immediately back up, slap him and leave. Instead she writhes around and takes it with pleasure, a lot of pleasure! At some point during this show, I’d called the ex into the room and when we proceeded to have a good ten minute show from our bedroom window. That was an entertaining evening!
6.
This was in NJ. I remember before I got my car I would have to take the bus to work. One day it was as usual, I was just sitting about midway in the bus on the right side, next thing you know some guy comes on, pays his fare and sits down.
He proceeded to take his hat off and dry shave his head (he had a hair length of what you’d expect after no shaving for a week, not long) with a razor that looked like an old disposable. I look at him in awe as he’s shaving his head bare like that and I begin to see blood just coming off the parts he shaved with the other parts just being spotted patches of hair.
By the time his stop came, he was bleeding quite a bit, and he just put his hat back on and got off. After that day I never sat down on any public transportation and have also stood up since. Never again.
7.
When I was 11 I saw a junkie get beat to death by two guys with clubs outside of my dad’s apartment.
8.
While on a business trip to Brazil I saw two homeless guys fucking while doing crack in the middle of the sidewalk in a very busy street.
9.
Man vomiting in a bag, grabbing the chunks of food from the vomit and eating it back again.
10.
Another client in the long term adolescent rehab facility I was in went defiant for a few months. Lots of crazy things during this time, but the best (worst?) was out in the parking lot one day.
We’ll refer to him as “D.” D intentionally let wild diarrhea loose which promptly vacated the legs of his shorts and soaked the ass area. D then starts pulling it out of his pants, off of the pavement and back of his leg, and starts throwing it at us, occasionally applying a streak here and there to his own face. Staff of course came after him to subdue and sedate him, and their pursuit was met with spicy molten shitsquirts. There was something really poetic about watching social workers in christmas sweaters tackle and restrain a young man covered in his own shit. You could’ve put “Yakety Sax” behind the whole thing.
D later (like, 2 months later) apologized to the group. He gave weird details in his apology, including the amount of Hot Sauce he intentionally consumed with his breakfast in his cereal that day for the desired effect. The fuck.
11.
Watched a seemingly normal older man walking his medium sized dog, dog stops, takes a dump on the sidewalk and he bends down and picks it up with a napkin and takes a big ole bite out of the turd and continues walking and eating his fresh dog log. I shit you not.
12.
Guy was high on something and came to the factory totally out of it. Too fucked up to work the assembly line, so they had him breaking down boxes with a box knife. He put one box on his thigh, and proceeded to cut a 2 foot long cut through the box and into his inner thigh without noticing it. Well, unless you consider passing out to be noticing.
13.
After school one day (which is close to work I guess ) which was 7th grade I saw a kid stab another kid in the stomach 3 or 4 times with a butcher knife
14.
No nudity involved, but on an NYC subway, very crouded, rush hour, a man clearly had his hand down a womans skirt, and she was biting her lip.
15.
Worked on a court case of a guy who’s was filling syringes (presumably, no needle) with his semen, and squirting them on the legs of young women as they were using the escalator during rush hour.
He would just stand behind them, shoot it up their skirt, and walk off. They wouldn’t necessarily know but he was caught on CCTV because he did this multiple times a day. Before that he had a record for exhibitionism (flashing) and then progressed on to this.
16.
Not sure if it’s nsfw but it was definitely weird and unexpected. A homeless man flipped me off and then put out his cigarette in his eye.
17.
Homeless dude squatting in an alleyway having a dump so bad that he was screaming at the top of his lungs every time he pushed.
18.
I saw this lady on the train making sexual noises into her cellphone on the train the other day.. it was disturbing. then she dared all the passengers to say something to her about it.. someone did. it was entertaining. gotta love DC.
19.
Well, I was once swimming at Wreck Beach in BC and there was a gay couple float-fucking in the water a few hundred yards off the shore (that’s NSFW but not the point of the story) pretending like the whole beach wasn’t seeing them.
Well, the whole beach continued not to see them as they floated directly into a floating wastewater slick from a passing Chinese oceanliner.
20.
I was at a college party in my dorm my freshman year. I was drinking with a few friends in the courtyard, which was packed with people. I walked around the corner with a buddy and there was a girl eating another girl out. There was quite a crowd forming around them.
21.
Downtown Seattle – you see bums shitting in the street fairly often. Well one bum was mid shit, stopped, and proceeded to pop the largest syst or zit or whatever the hell this ungodly thing was, resulting in the most puss I’ve ever seen come out of another human.

14.
