His name is George. The man holding the dog is named George. Some years ago, a friend on mine met him. She's one of those friends that is a mother, sister, mentor and friend. Anyway, some time ago, she lead a student trip to tour the Deep South and some of the major Civil Rights' landmarks and locations. She met George and his wife, Carol, on Dauphin Island. Dauphin Island is a barrier island in Alabama, right there in Mobile County. George and Carol run the Dauphin House. It's a pretty famous Bed and Breakfast in which they have hosted all kinds of people over the years. Some famous. Some not. Some Foreign. Some American. Some black and white and in between or on the other side of both. All human though. The anger and hatred that George had in his heart at this moment caught on film, is a moment of great shame and embarrassment for him. It is not his high point in life. He looks at it and shakes his head, wondering how this could be him. With age, time and exposure, this hatred has dried up, turned to dust and is no more. It seems that the only things that remain in the end are truth and love. This is NOT a political statement. Right is right and wrong is wrong. There are immovable and absolute rights. As well as wrongs. No matter how you look at this. This. Is. Wrong. This iconic photo is a snap shot of the worst of him. When time has stopped moving and is no more and history is all that is behind us. Choose to be on th right side of the leash...the right side of history.
