Pain is not comfortable. Our initial and immediate reaction, learned as it may be, is to push the responsibility for that pain away, in hopes that the pain will go away too. Frequently, though, this just makes it worse. At the very least, it can prolong the pain.

 

The bad news is that you are responsible for your experience. If you want your experience to change, you have to do something to create that change.

The good news is that you are responsible for your experience. If you want your experience to change, you can do something about that, and the only thing you really have to change is how you think about that experience.

Pick something that happened in the last 14 days that you found to be painful. Perhaps it is still causing you pain. Write down what that experience was, what happened, how it felt. Now try to look at it from another point of view, as if you were another person; it can still be happening to that person, but they might perceive it differently.  Now write about it from a third point of view, still the person that the event is happening to, but make sure they perceive it differently than you or the first not-you did. Now look at it from the point of view of someone who was just observing the events. What might they think? What are all of the stories they could tell themselves about what they were witnessing?

Do you feel differently about the event now?
