Poetry in Motion

Not many chefs have time to ride a bike let alone build one. For this chef with a love of the outdoors, there was only one course of action.

So Dylan became an ex-chef to be a cycle messenger and mechanic before touring North America by bike. On his return to York and needing to be earning a better living, his love and knowledge of bikes led him to create his own wheel building and custom bike building businesses. With high regard for quality, detail and bike feel and ride, he named his new bike building business Poetry in Motion (PIM Cycles). It was only once I was with Dylan that I learned his surname is Thomas, and then the penny dropped!

Dylan goes to great lengths to build a bike that matches his customers’ needs, whatever type of bike that might be. Each build will be unique, tailored and understated, with every single component agreed beforehand. The understated detail is important to the build; the bike should not only still be running well in 30 years time but still look simply well built.

The PIM build, service and repair workshop is located centrally in York just off busy Fossgate, so easy to get to…by bike and foot! The premises is shared with the bike messenger and courier service he used to work for and there is also a seat for a custom bike bag maker.

Having thanked Dylan for his time, I departed for the artisan coffee shop just around the corner on Fossgate to be greeted by one of Dylan’s bikes suspended from the wall and looking good.
