40 years ago the future looked like this Ford Probe V Concept, 1985, by Ghia. The last in Ford's experimental Probe series was also the most aerodynamic, achieving a drag coefficient 0.137. The front wheels were covered by a membrane that flexed as the wheels turned. The doors move outwards on short parallelogram hinges until they clear the sides of the body then slides back

Smoke Machine / Movements of Air, Etienne-Jules Marey (1830-1904)

"Marey was one of the first theoreticians of aeronautics, the study of which led him to his aesthetic apotheosis during the years 1899-1902. His last major works were devoted to the observation and instant photography of smoke currents produced in his "smoke machine", one of the first modern aerodynamic wind tunnels, showing the diverse shapes of wisps of smoke according to the obstacle encountered in their trajectory. 40 years ago the future looked like this Mitsubishi MP-90X Concept, 1985. Presented at the 26th Tokyo Motor Show, a highly aerodynamic compact coupé powered by a 1.3 litre engine driving all 4 wheels. The MP-90X was supposed to preview cars of the 1990s and featured (advanced for time) navigation and communications technology.
