Which custom tape to use for your business?
In this article, Mr Gaurav Jalan, Founder of Packman Packaging India’s leading custom tapes manufacturer for retail and e-commerce businesses shares ideas for choosing custom tape. Let us what it is about.
Consider Your Branding: Custom tape is an excellent opportunity to extend your brand identity beyond the confines of your product. Consider the colors, logo, and overall aesthetic of your brand when designing custom tape. Whether you opt for a bold and eye-catching design or a subtle and sophisticated look, the tape should reflect the essence of your brand. Material Matters: The material of the custom tape plays a crucial role in its functionality and appearance. Common materials include polypropylene, PVC, and paper. Polypropylene is durable and cost-effective, making it a popular choice for general packaging. PVC offers a higher level of strength and is resistant to moisture and chemicals. Paper tape, on the other hand, is eco-friendly and provides a rustic appeal. Choose a material...

[HE SOUNDS A LITTLE SHAKEN, AS IF HE IS PACING UP AND DOWN AS HE IS TALKING.]
I found a tape on my desk. I have checked and double checked with security and with the CCTV coming into the building and everyone coming in or out of the building is accounted for. Was it posted here? It wasn’t in an envelope or anything. Maybe Ma- someone thought they were being helpful. But he- they wouldn’t open my mail, would they? Anyway. Here it is. Statement of Sebastian Moran. Regarding how he met James Moriarty.
[CLICK]
SEBASTIAN MORAN
I found one of your little tape recorders, Archivist, so thought I’d give you something to listen to. You know me. Basher Moran. Moriarty’s Tiger. The most feared sniper in Europe. Prince of London’s Underworld. That one is weird I think, if Moriarty’s the king, that would make me his son? Anyway. Yeah. It’s me, and I hear you’ve been tracking down me and Jimmy, listening to all our victim’s statements and all that. So I thought I’d give you something straight from the tiger’s mouth. There have been quite a few stories about how I met my Jimmy. Urban legends really. Is this one of them or is this a lie just to get under your skin? Only you’ll be able to tell, right Archivist?
Let’s quickly skip through the really boring stuff. Yeah, yeah, son of Augustus Moran and a servant he knocked up in his house in India. He actually had quite a few bastards you know, for some reason he took a shine to me and that’s not the compliment you think it is. He was a faggot, pretended not to be, and whether I killed the fat cunt or not is a little secret you already know the answer to, Archivist. Anyway, I’m the best shot you’ll ever find. Spent most of my teens at a shooting range and didn’t get sped through the army ranks cause of my surname. When your as brown as me and your dad dun’t wanna talk about you a name as common as Moran don’t help. So. I get quietly discharged cause if a nasty event that don’t have anything to do with this story, but you need to picture me as being out Army in my twenties and making a comfortable living selling my services. With a gun, by the way, not my dick sucking lips.
The thing about sniping, is it’s mostly waiting. You set yourself up somewhere high up and out of sight, if you’re good at it you can be low down and no one will find you. Sometimes it’s just you, snacks, drinks, your headphones, and that spare empty bottle you brought to piss in. Audiobooks are great for that. I got through all Chuck Palahniuk’s stories that way. Anyway. Got distracted. So. Most people assume Jimmy hired me, and nah, course he didn’t. He doesn’t do anything like a normal person. First, it was messages in my phone. A text message from a number that didn’t exist and any time I tried to call it instead all I got was a loud screeching noise. The text itself was just a set of coordinates and a time. I decided to ignore it, and five minutes after the deadline, I got left a voicemail without my phone ever had been rung. Weirdest thing about that? It was my voice.
Yeah. Apparently I had rang myself and left a message threatening me about what I would do to my eyeballs if I didn’t pay attention to the next text message. So that was fucking weird. But message received. The next time I got some coordinates I went straight there. First ones led me to a tube station. And when I looked at the train times screen, there was a message for me instead. No one else seemed to see it. But I swear to God it said “Moran. Go to the payphone I’ve marked.” Which is fucking annoying. God damn treasure trail without the treasure. Anyway, so I found it, and clever fuck had written “hi” with a heart drawn on it. Fucking fag. So when I got to it, it started ringing. I answered it and this soft lilting voice was in the other end.
He gave me a job. A good job. With a lot of money. And I said yeah, even though I asked why he didn’t just tell me instead that of playing some stupid game. He giggled and said it was fun. Now I get it. That’s just how he works. When you’re running around anxious and confused he’s feeding off you. That’s just a small way he gets a quick snack. So we went on like this for a while, giving me job after job. I got a bit sick of it, and whilst yeah the Web is really fucking powerful. But. Well, I’m the Hunt. And finding shit is what I do.
So I laid low for a while and between and during jobs I started tracking down my Jimmy. He knew, kept making jokes about how close I was. Maybe he thought I wouldn’t make it to him, maybe he wanted me to, or maybe he didn’t care. Honestly, Jimmy might not even know. Maybe he didn’t think about it. But. Eventually I found myself just outside of this big fancy flat building. One of the types in zone one where the front is fancy as fuck and the back is meeting the quota for affordable housing. I don’t care, if they live in the shithole they can’t pay me. I took the lift up to the top floor. The huge, massive, modern screen door greeted me when I got out. He has a penthouse you see, and the dramatic fuck has a spider web pattern all over it.
I was planning on being subtle, but the moment I got to the top floor, I heard a lilting giggle. I looked up to see a camera pointed directly at me. He didn’t say a word, just ended up with a click to show the door was open. I walked in. His house is pretty great but I’m not gonna tell you shit that might lead you to him. You know what’s funny? I hate spiders. I hate them. I hate them so much of course I noticed their was a lot hanging around my flat since this started. But I didn’t think they had anything to do with Jimmy. His penthouse though? Let’s just say he’s gone all out on the theme.
Anyway. I mostly came here to kill time because gotta shoot one of your librarians. Just some dickhead who stuck his nose where he shouldn’t. By the time you hear this, you might wanna make sure someone goes up to clean up. I knew this would be a great way to distract you. Once the statement started you wouldn’t be able to put it down. Hope you enjoyed my story, mate. There’s plenty more where that came from. My Jimmy? He’ll be in touch.
THE ARCHIVIST
[CLICK. HE SIGHS.]
Statement ends. Carson Throw was found with a very clean gunshot wound through his temples. The bullet was found lodged into a book about spider webs. Hardly subtle. There wasn’t much of a mess. Carson was very wrapped up in jobs for James Moriarty, nothing special just owed him a lot of money from card games and he was slowly trying to work off. It seems Carson tried to get out before his debt had been paid. As for what Moran and Moriarty want with me… Only time will tell.

Top Trends in Edge Banding Designs for Modern Interiors
Tumblr media
Edge Banding, though a seemingly small tiny element of interior design is a practical solution for that perfect finishing. Every piece of furniture has its own story to narrate of which the most unsung hero which often gets overlooked is the edge band. It has the ability to transform the look of the object from being dull to fabulous and yet the worth of it being placed around a table or at the edge of a cabinet is always overlooked.
No one likes to stare at raw edges and especially when it has a tendency to tear our favourite piece of clothing or when we get hurt by a splinter from the raw edge. Its worth is well known in carpentry and by furniture manufacturers. E3 Edge Bands work their magic to transform the look of your furniture while it’s life.
One of the benefits of using E3 Edge Bands is the variety of trendy designs, colours, finishes and textures they have to offer. In the recent years the trend in the interiors have shifted towards monochromatic themes, woody browns, fluted, matts or bold solid statements. There is something very refreshing about the pieces and colours selected that kindle feelings.
Edge Band manufacturers of India follow market trends and supply edge banding tapes according to the demand of the furniture designers and manufacturers. The shift towards environment friendly materials are also in great demand along with the need to feel soft and smooth textured finishing with no ugly visible joints. Due to environmental concerns manufacturers of edge bands in India like E3 Edge Band are adopting methods of using recycled materials reducing carbon footprint.
Also, the growing popularity of being able to customise according to your needs is driving consumers to demand for what best suits them. Keep a look out for minimalistic featured designs, woody tones, textured and fabric inspired finishes, contrasting colours, high-gloss finishes, soft touch technology and metallic accents. These are the maturing trends of the modern lifestyle as preferred by architects and homeowners, highlighting beauty, sustainability and functionality of edge bands.

Men Fashion Highlights – the Leather Jackets
Introduction to Leather Jackets
A leather garment is a magnificent piece of outerwear worn on top of an underneath layer to hold up the overall grandeur. It is known to be resourced from raw animal hides, consecutive steps of tanning process results into what is called as polished leather. It is primarily dyed in various distinct shades of black and brown. Although, a wide spectrum of contrast hue goes for an advanced innovation. The leather outerwear segment is available in many designs correlating to many themes, specific purposes and also tops the extended fashion. Aside the visual vogue, sub-categories associated with functionality of the leather wears includes the style suited for greasers, motorcycle and bike riders, mobsters, military aviators, and a whole family of music industry which further includes punks, Goths, studded piece and the ones with rivet heads. Leather unveils its broad spectrum of supporting fashion through function be it as a protective shield, a winter fend, and a fashion armor. It creates a potentially intimidating appearance and encourages watchers for the modern take.
Most contemporary leather jackets are produced in Pakistan, India, Canada, Mexico and the United States, using hides left over from the meat industry. Thus, there is no harm caused to animals and the healthy eco-system is maintained. Re-using of waste hides to produce leather is a crucial segment of waste management. But, retrieval of wearable leather is the end result of subsequent steps and procedures, and the flow chart eventually takes up a certain length time span. Precision in procedure is the key to a durable and premium leather garment. As such, mostly authentic leather products like the Leather Biker Jackets for men are quite expensive which might curb the way out against the keen leather lovers. And so to keep trend going, fabrics with a similar look alike to that of leather are used as alternatives. Synthetics such as such as Polyurethane and PVC back up the premium leather depending on the needs of the wearer such as a vegan lifestyle or unavoidable economic factors.  Synthetic fibers tend to be less costly.
Material
The most widely known hides used to make leather jackets are the ones from antelope family, the buckskin, goatskin, sheepskin, horsehide, and cowhide. The skin is defrosted, salted, or packed in low salinity barrels as soon as it is removed from the animal at the meat processing plant. The skins are then sent to the tannery, where they undergo an intricate series of processes to preserve and soften the hides. After the completion of which the hides get the tag of leather piece and shipped to garment factory. Frill decor and other embellishments are then followed up by the integration of thread, lining, seam tape, buttons, snaps, and zippers from local vendors or as per current design trends and the leather jacket or trench coat is all ready for sale.
Types of Leather
Quality leather is the foundation of the best leather jackets. As in common knowledge is a substance, created from an animal’s skin. Based on the orientation for the fibres, there are five typical varieties of leather used for an apparel.
1. Full-grain leather: The strongest kind of leather is full-grain leather. It comes from the area just below the animal's hair and has a marginal resistance to moisture. Full-grain leather ages well, however it could have some skin flaws visible. Full-grain leather jackets are typically the most expensive, but they are also the most enduring and develop a stunning tarnish with time.
2. Top-grain leather: Full-grain leather that has had the topmost layer of skin removed is known as top-grain leather. This process evens out any flaws but reduces longevity. Top-grain leather jackets are less expensive, more uniform in appearance, and frequently covered with a protective finish than full-grain leather jackets.
3. Corrected Grain: Corrected grain or split leather, often known as genuine leather, is made mostly from the cortex and the skin layers that remain after the top is split off. Due to its location beneath the top layers, split leather has a tendency to have a rougher texture and is typically utilized for furniture backs and sides that don't call for soft leather. It is also sanded to remove inherent flaws, just as top grain leather. Often, the surface is imprinted with a leather-like pattern and sprays painted to leave natural impression. Yet, the processing changes the leather's potential ability to breathe.
4. Bonded Leather: Remainders from the hide are used to produce bonded leather. This also applies to the shavings and dust. On top of a fiber layer, these are cemented together using latex or polyurethane. Spray paint is frequently used to make items resemble full or top grain leather. The percentage of natural leather cannot be determined unless the producer chooses to divulge it, which is quite unlikely. The lowest quality and least expensive leather is the bonded one.
5. Faux leather: Fake leather is a synthetic substance that resembles leather. Although it is vegan and costs less than real leather, it is less soft and robust.
Short Guide to Leather finishes
Leather finishes may start from the simple ones ending to the high quality regal ones.
Aniline Finish : Only the superior quality of full grain leather can be processed through an Aniline finishing touch. It develops an attractive polish, leaving the leather to be breathable in nature. But this kind of high grade leather needs utter care and maintenance. In order to retain the sheen glaze good as new, these jackets are recommended to be stored in cool covered closet and away from sun exposure.
Pigmented finished Full Grain Leather: It is one of the most preferred leather finishes from among all as it requires very little upkeep and is more robust, and thus can be used for rough uses. It is not as soft as Aniline. High-quality, full-grain leather is used for this finish. While keeping the look and feel of a high-quality product, it differs from other finishes by adding a resin-based color to cover the imperfections in the leather. This treatment encloses the pores of the leather. Pigment has been applied evenly over the surface and color to cover up the leather's original hue. Light and stain tolerance is possible with this layering, but breathability is hindered.
Suede finished Leather: Suede is sturdy as well as being appealing. The elastic fibers can swiftly return to their erect posture after being compressed. This indicates that the pelt has no traces visible on it. Suede has a beautiful appearance and is extremely soft to the touch, but it is also very durable.
Inference:
Eventually, after learning everything there is to know about leather, it becomes way too fascinating to dress up in the greatest and most fashionable leather jackets available. Real leather Moto Jackets for men, the authentic leather trench coats for a party wear, elite leather parkas for women, etc, all forms the regal versions of men’s and women’s outerwear. Genuine leather outerwear's original, harmonious splendor falls within the category of timeless style. An optimal choice for high profile events and a good fit for cold weather. Their timeless style frames the appropriate dress for any occasion, including official convocations, semi-formal dinners, and informal outings. It is typically fashioned in the most prominent current style, a single toned uniform shade.

Chapter One: Homecoming
July 5th, 2031
I reach up with the remote control in my hand and click off the TV set. I think I’ve seen enough. My stomach is churning … I think I’m going to be sick.
My level of exhaustion is slightly better than it was yesterday. I hate that I had to spend most of my birthday in bed, because I was too tired to do anything, but what did I expect? I went eighteen days with nothing but water … holy water … to sustain me. I traversed the pits of Hell. I fought demons, I fought ancestors. I found Dad and had a conversation with Lucifer.
Then that even wasn’t the biggest shock. My whole world started to crumble on me while I was down in the hole, but when I emerge I find out that things up here got so much worse in my absence, which here was two years. My friends are in hiding, changed, having fought for so long and so hard. My best friend has changed the most … Michika only manhandled me in the morning with her new cat powers, but backed off in the afternoon. Things are so different now.
Yet things stay the same, and that can be comforting. On this early morning, I’m finally snapped out of my stupor in the darkened TV room by the scent of food approaching. I look up and see Aunt Kitty, approaching through the gloom, a plate loaded with food in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other.
No wait, it’s not coffee … I can smell it better as she gets closer, it’s orange pekoe tea. She sets it down on the table in front of me. “Bad show on the tube?”
I sigh and look up as she sits down next to me. “Yeah. Michi was nice enough to tape this, I guess … so what happened after this speech?” I turn my head slightly as I start eating the meal on the plate, scrambled eggs with two slabs of bison and hash browns.
“Well, as he said, he presented his case before the UN. There was a group of four nations that mounted the only protest against the plan, and you can probably guess which one led the way.”
            I nod. “Jordan, right?”
“Got it in one. King Fahai was in attendance at the session, and spoke right after our American Führer. He gave it a go, with an impassioned speech protesting the enlargement of the SSA, claiming … and rightfully so, I might add … that any expansion of anti-supernatural sentiment would be tantamount to the New Empire assuming control of the entire world.”
The food tastes good, but it’s the situation that’s leaving a bitter flavor in my mouth. “Who were the other countries?”
“Not that it matters … but it was Japan, India, and Brazil. None of which have much power in the body, as none of them are currently on the Security Council. Anyway, the night after the session was when King Fahai died, supposedly of a heart attack.”
I can imagine what the real cause of death must have been.
“Fahaian left a day later to take his throne.”
I nod gravely. “When did Michi change?”
Aunt Kitty rolls her eyes, clearly showing me she doesn’t like what she’s about to tell me. “About a month ago. We were in the middle of a fight, because we’d accidentally moved the Ranch into the middle of an SSA compound. One minute she’s rushing into the battle, I lose track of her while fighting a bunch of blueshirted bozos, and the next time I see her she’s in my old body, wailing away and blasting them with that stupid glove of hers …”
She wipes her eye gently. Something tells me she’s very upset about this. “Are you okay, Aunt Kitty?”
She sighs and nods quickly. “I’ll be fine. Anyway, once the fight subsided and we were away from the SSA, I had it out with Durga. She had been passing through the night before, wanting to check to see if you had come up from the Inferno yet, and stayed overnight only to get drawn into the battle the next morning. She had no right to make Michi her servant, not when the burden should have been mine. So as a result I kicked her ass permanently out of the Ranch. She’s forbidden to ever come back.”
This news makes me very sad. Durga has been my favorite teacher, the one who helped me gain control over the Guardswoman, who taught me that control equates to power. Without her to help me, what chance do I have now?
My hand drifts down to the Sword, hanging loosely from my hip. It helped me greatly in Hell, but will the power be enough to confront what’s before me now? A worldwide war … I shudder thinking about it.
There’s more pressing matters, I know, and so I look up at Aunt Kitty, having eaten the final morsel on my plate. “How’s Dad doing?”
She lights up slightly. “Better. He’s sitting up, eating last I saw him. He’s been lying in that bed for two years, so his muscles need some time to adjust to motion again, but his mind’s there at least.”
I need to see him. I need to be reminded that what I did for eighteen days was real, that I truly did rescue him. Teacup in hand, I leave the TV room and head toward Dad’s room.
The door is slightly cracked, with light pouring out, as I approach. I knock gently on the door.
“Come in.” The voice isn’t Dad’s. Unfortunately, it belongs to Gabe Francis. Over the course of this entire period searching for Dad, I’ve really started hating Gabe’s half-truths and convenient misinformation. I’m dreading seeing him now, even though it should be a happy time.
Cheer up, girl. You just saved your dad from hell.
I slowly push the door open, letting the pale light within bathe me. I look over toward the bed and see two upright shadows. One of them turns around to face me, and even in the dimness I can see his white hair and weird eye tattoos.
“Ah, Alanna, I’m glad you’re here.” Gabe tries to smile. Tries to, because it comes out more as a smirk. It’s always a smirk with that man. I’d like to scowl at him, give him a verbal beatdown for the insanity he forced me into in the name of teaching me a lesson, but my fury can’t find a voice because of the face close behind him.
Dad’s looking up at me, his face hollow and malnourished, but his eyes as clear as they ever were. He smiles over at me. “Hey, little sweetheart.”
That melts me. Immediately, I’m at his side, clutching him tightly. He feels so thin …
“Daddy, I’m so glad … so glad you made it.” I don’t want the waterworks to start right now, not with Gabe in the room. Once he leaves maybe, but not now.
“I’m glad, too.” Dad squeezes me gently.
“I hate to interrupt this reunion,” Gabe interjects, “but there’s some business we need to attend to. Cole was just telling me about you having a talk with Lucifer. I sincerely hope you kept my advice to you in mind.”
I turn toward Gabe, but I keep my arm around Dad. “I’m not about to let my guard down around the Devil himself, Gabe.”
            “What was the talk about?”
I sigh. I don’t want to re-live the Inferno ever, but this might be important. “He was asking me for a favor, tried to bargain with me for a task, actually.”
Gabe nods, his chin in his hand. “What was it about?”
“Another sword, more powerful than the Sabre of the Invader. It’s missing, along with a prince and princess of Hell, and I have a feeling I know where we might find all three.”
An eyebrow shoots up on Gabe’s face. “What sword? I only knew about the Sabre.”
Did I seriously catch Gabe Francis off-guard with new information? Something about this conversation makes me feel powerful. “Lucifer called it the ‘Damnation Blade.’ It was held in a leather casket, but when it was opened for us the Blade was missing.”
Gabe’s face goes pale. “Oh God.  That Blade … I’d forgotten about it.”
Well crap, that didn’t last long. “What can you tell us about it? Lucifer didn’t say much, other than he offered me a hell of a lot to find it and bring it back.”
The agent grumbles under his breath. “Are you sure …”
“Gabe, please tell her.” Dad’s voice sounds insistent, and still powerful despite his weakened body.
“All right then,” Gabe mutters. “The Damnation Blade, as you might already know, was also forged by Abaddon at the same time as the Sabre of the Invader. The metal was formed from lava collected from the deepest circles of Hell, mingled with Lucifer’s own blood. When finished, the Blade was said to be nine feet long, larger than any sword anyone save a demon could wield.”
This isn’t good at all. “I need to know, Gabe. What am I up against? What can the Blade do?”
            “Alanna, please …”
“Tell me!” I’m standing up, nervous. I’m scared out of my mind, the last thing that I need is Gabe holding back on me again.
“Okay. The Damnation Blade can kill gods.”
I sink back down to the bed and clutch Dad tightly. A sword that can kill gods? What good is a Guardsman going to be against something like that?
“Are you satisfied? The Blade can destroy gods, so you can imagine what it can do to a regular supernatural.” Gabe stands up and straightens his tie. “If you’ll excuse me, I need some time to think.” He storms out.
I sit down on the bed. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Gabe that rattled in my life. Dad’s hand finds mine.
            “Are you all right, Alanna?”
“I’m not sure, Dad, it’s just … there’s just so much stuff down there that I saw … things that I did … it’s too much for me to process. I’m not sure if I’m going to be any good to anyone up here.”
Dad leans forward. It’s a great struggle for him to do, but the same hand that was on my own now finds my shoulder. “You can’t be expected to carry that burden yourself, not forever. You’re going to need to talk through it. God knows I’ll need to, I spent so long down there.”
For what feels like the first time in an eternity, my eyes meet his. I see the pain, the sadness, the torment that he’s been through. All at once, I’m sad for my father but at the same time I’m glad that it’s him sitting here and not Tyrelius Scolar. I lean over to him and hug him tightly.
“We’ll get through it together, Daddy. I promise.”
I think he’s weeping … I feel his shoulders shudder. “I missed you so much, Alanna, you and your mother. You have no idea how empty it feels to be without you …”
I can’t help but smirk. “I think I might have an idea, Dad. It’s okay.” Despite the humor of the situation, I feel myself starting to tear up.
“Am I interrupting?” A feminine voice draws us out of our reverie. When we turn to the door, Grandmother and William are standing there, smiling at us. Grandmother has a mug filled with a familiar-looking potion, and approaches the bed first.
“That’s not what I think it is, is it?” Dad isn’t a fan of Uncle Cyrus’s weird medical brew. I don’t blame him, the stuff works but it’s disgusting.
Grandmother only smiles. “I think you know it is. I do apologize, but Mr. Salem insisted that I give this to you.” As she hands Dad the mug, I stand up and go over to William, who offers a welcoming arm to hide under.
William … my boyfriend, my ally … for eighteen days, I only had our last kiss in Hawaii to keep me going in Hell. I’d nearly forgotten how good it feels to be in his embrace. My head naturally finds a path to lay on his chest as he cuddles me.
“How are you holding up?” His voice radiates his concern. I look up at him, my eyes captured by the newest feature of his face, a long scar that runs from his right eyebrow down to the bottom of his ear.
“Okay, I guess … I’m relieved to be back, and I’m so glad Dad’s here for real … but still I can’t quite shake the experience I had. It’s going to be a while, I’m sorry.”
William shakes his head. “No problem, Alanna, it’s okay. I understand. Pele did say you might change after the journey …”
He sounds doubtful. I need to reassure him of one thing. “Don’t worry, William.” I reach a hand up to stroke his face. “I still love you.” He smiles at the words, bowing his head slightly to kiss me.
Throat-clearing stops us before our lips can meet. Dad’s throat-clearing. “Is there something I need to know about?”
We both look over to the bed, where Dad has probably the most humorous expression on his face I’ve seen in years. Clearly he’s not mad, but he just needs to be filled in. With William’s hand in both of mine, I pull him over to Dad’s bedside, smiling right back.
“I suppose I should have told you about this earlier. Dad, this is William White Bear. William, meet the real Cole Sharpe.”
William extends his free hand to Dad. “I’m honored, sir, to be in the presence of another Guardsman. Alanna has told me so much about you.”
Dad chuckles. “That makes one of us.” His voice takes a mildly scolding tone. “Alanna, when were you going to tell me about your boyfriend here?”
“Sorry, Dad, it never came up, what with the whole ‘escape from Hell’ thing.”
“Well, I suppose I can forgive that.” He looks back over to William. “She hasn’t been too rough on you, has she?”
Now William’s blushing. Dad managed to make a wendigo warrior blush … how is that even possible? “Oh my, not at all, it’s not like that …”
“Relax, son, I’m joking. My little girl’s got great taste.” Dad raises his eyebrow slightly. “You seem familiar, actually …”
“It’s a long story,” I interject. “I’ll tell you more about it sometime.”
Our reverie is once again interrupted, this time by Michika. We can’t avoid the loud sound of her purring … she’s really taken to this cat form of hers. “Alanna, William, I hate to interrupt, but we need you out here. Gabe needs to talk with everybody.”
I look over toward the door, scanning my best friend’s appearance, trying to take in all of the changes. Her entire body is tiger-striped, her face has been lengthened and molded into a cat’s muzzle, her eyes are bright yellow with almond-sliver pupils, her ears prick up and move around like a cat’s, taking in all the room’s sounds. Her bikini-top, her usual choice of shirt, seems so redundant now. There’s even more contrast now between the rest of her body and the brown leather magic gauntlet she has permanently attached to her arm, which I now notice has been monogrammed with an enormous “M” at the top near her shoulder.
What’s more urgent, though, is the expression on her face; abject worry. Michi never worries, and especially after her transformation she shouldn’t be worrying. “What’s wrong, Michi?”
She swallows hard. “He says we might be doomed.”

Paul Robeson Speaks: Writings, Speeches, and Interviews
❍❍❍
Tumblr media
The book is a 600-page collection of Paul Robeson's own writings, speeches, manifestos, and interviews. (1) I found the book very useful before reading one of Robeson’s biographies. These writings give us a glimpse into the struggles and achievements of Robeson as an artist and activist. I also recommend reading at least one of Robeson’s biographies. Among many who have written biographies, Martin Duberman, Gerald Horne, Barbara Ransby and Paul Robeson Jr. have the best books that I have come across.
Robeson started as the only black player on the Rutgers University football team. He confronted tremendous racism by the white players. In one of these instances, Robert Nash, a member of the racist varsity squad, flatly states that Robeson “took a terrific beating...We gave him a tough time during the practices; it was like initiation. He took it well, though.” (2)
After graduation from Rutgers, he prepared himself to attend the law school at Columbia, and in-between he worked at his father’s church for a short period. His father wanted Paul to become a minister just like him. During college, Paul decided that he lacked zeal for the ministry and that a career in law better suited his wish to make a name for himself and to serve his people. (2) After finishing law school in 1923, he started to practice his law career. Soon he gave up for lack of interest and the prevalent racism in the American society. He worked for a law firm and one day left the job after a secretary (in a racist slight) refused to type his letters. (3)
Then, he started his music and acting career. He started as a musical actor playing Shakespearian theatre. Simultaneously, he lived between Europe (mainly Britain) and the United States. His reputation as an artist appeared to be boundless as early as the late 1920s, as his renown in Europe served to boost further his recognition in his homeland. (3) In 1927, he and one of his best friends Lawrence Brown appeared at a now fabled benefit for the Harlem Museum of African Art. (3) He was featured in many early Hollywood films such as Body and Soul, Borderline, Emperor Jones, and Show Boat. Many of these films (if not all) are deeply racist and profane. They are showing the real barbarity of white European culture in the United States during those years.

SPEECHES
Gradually his films and records become famous all over the world, and he was able to merge his artistic career with his political activism. He started advocating for human rights causes in the Global South as well as anti-imperialist and anti-racist work within Europe and the United States. He sang and spoke at numerous workers unions and workers conventions where the audience were working class people of all races.
Recently, I have made two mix tapes on Paul Robeson (songs and speeches) for THE EAST IS A PODCAST. (4) (5) I found this book very exceptional among the other books that I used for my research. I also published part of my research as a Twitter thread on Paul Robeson’s connection with the first prime minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru who was instrumental in Robeson’s victory over his case with the United States Department of State in 1958.
Here are some examples of Paul Robeson’s famous words gathered in this collection:
The artist Must take Sides (speech)
Africa––Continent in Bondage (News Article)
Anti-imperialists Must Defend Africa (Speech)
Robeson Asks Truman Action on Lynching (News Article)
Happy Birthday New China (1952, written while in mandatory Lockdown)
Ho Chi Minh is The Toussaint Louverture of Indo-China (1955)
Greetings to Bandung (1955)

the convoy boys after the war, part one - rossi and cooke ♡
rossi:
i’ve talked about rossi after the war quite a bit, but essentially, he copes the best. or, rather, he’s the best at accepting that he is fundamentally ruined, that he’s been hollowed out and emptied, that he isn’t and never will be the same, that this trauma will last a life time. and because he’s able to accept that relatively easy and make peace with the sleepless nights and who he’s become and what has happened to him, he can move on. he can look the trauma in the eye and shake its hand and get on with his life in a way that is both terrible and enviable. he’s always been at peace in the quiet, always had a deadpan, irreverent gallows humour, always had to look out for his mother and his siblings and himself - and those three things form the basis of how he’s able to more or less put the war behind him. he was raised in a bleak, grey world of wild moors and black-brown bricks and factory smoke, and war is just another bad thing.
afterwards, he doesn’t go back to the factory. he’s reunited with his family - a joyous, deafening affair: he showed up completely unannounced and knocked on the front door during dinner, and then his siblings are all over him, from the youngest to the eldest, from the sister who had been in a crib when he left in his uniform to the brother who’s almost a man and who has taken a job in the mines, and he has children perched on his shoulders and in his arms and around his legs, and everyone is laughing, and he’s grinning that soft, sly crooked grin, and his mother is shouting at him for something with a gruff face and her apron round her waist, and when he opens his arms for a hug she swats him away like she’s cross, and then they’re finally hugging and she’s smiling and pretending there aren’t tears on her cheeks. he’s reunited with his family, and he stays in his old childhood bedroom for a few days, because they want him to and he isn’t settled yet. he tells his siblings the stories he can bear to tell, and ignores his mother when she insists he doesn’t help her make dinner, and it’s good, it’s nice, to be back in this warm, low-lit, loud home.
a week or so later, he finds a second-story flat in the same row of grey houses he’d rented a flat in before the war, and he spends all his service pay - two and a half years’ worth - that he hasn’t given to his mother or put into the flat on a typewriter, and then all the money is gone. the flat is empty and cold and feelingless: low ceiling and water stained walls and grimy glass, and water in the bathroom that never runs hot. but it’ll do. his mother gives him an old desk she’s kept tucked away in the barn, and for a long while it’s his only piece of furniture - that and a fuzzy little lamp with a bulb he has to tap a few times to make it stop flickering. he puts the desk by the window, looking out over the brown, damp street, and every day he writes.
he’d always wanted to be a writer - a journalist, to be precise - but he’d lacked the courage to start before. rossi, afraid? no one at school would have believed it. anyway, the war hammered that out of him. there’s no nerves left now. there’s just a quiet, empty, dead-eyed fearlessness that was born in shellfire and turned to soft steel the first time he came out of it alive. friends died, but no one could touch him. stand up and wave his arms about in no man’s land and no one could have touched him.
so, every day, he writes. he starts to write down everything about the war, in chronological order, but it isn’t right and most of the time he’s just left staring down at the page with the echo of cooke telling some stupid story that everyone knew never happened and jondalar speaking softly about his little sister and the smell of flowers and the slums during the rainy season in india inside his head. they’ve written to him. quite frequently, really. he sends a few lines back when he feels like it, but soon enough that stops as well. what is there to say? if it weren’t for the war, they never would have met.
when the memoirs go nowhere, he hitches a ride into the biggest town near his own village (his own? his family’s), walks straight into the local newspaper’s office, puts a few pages of writing onto the editor’s table, and asks for a job. just like that. fearless, hooded eyes and all. he gets it. he stays for a few more months in his little flat, writing articles and posting them in. he has dinner with his family most nights. sometimes he stays over for breakfast, or to take his younger siblings to school, or to go out with them to the moors. the rest of the time he keeps to himself. he’s not interested in other people, in pubs, in friends. a few try to befriend him, boys he’d known at school before he’d dropped out and boys from the factory and men who had known his father. he’s polite, but terse, and the conversation never goes far. few try a second time. he’s nice to the old women, though. they don’t try to be sympathetic and submissive about the war. “fuckin’ disaster wasn’t it, hen?” they growl in those thick accents of theirs, and he sneer-smiles back at them and loves them fiercely for it, “the english ought to be shot for it.”
he stays for a few more months, and schofield wrings an address out of him in one of the few letters he answers, and it’s better than he thought it would be to see him. his mother tries to fatten schofield up. they travel around the country for a few months. walk the moors and the forests. it’s good. it’s nice. they talk about books. he’s fascinated by the newspaper job. he’s sad to see him go.
after that, he moves to dundee, then to glasgow. gets a job at a bigger and better newspaper. writes articles that earn him praise and recognition. malky sends him a letter - sweet malky, he keeps writing even when he doesn’t get anything in reply - with a clipping of one of his articles. he says he’s started ordering the paper from glasgow just so he can read what he’s written.
and something about that snaps rossi out of it, out of this grey fog that he’d taken to be the rest of his life and that he’d merely accepted. he writes to all of them - to parry and jondalar and schofield and butler and malky and cooke - and finally they all get together and it’s wonderful. it’s perfect. it’s everything he’s ever needed. after that, life is warmer, brighter, sunnier, more open. he hears the birds singing for the first time in a year. they go down to london one time and jondalar introduces them all to his parents and sisters, and they all stay for dinner. another time they all come up to scotland to stay at rossi’s family home and go for picnics on the open moors. he and cooke finally get together. everything is good. rossi becomes a famous journalist and war writer, once he finally writes his memoirs and finds a publisher for them.
they heal.
cooke:
after having found a place among people who wanted him with them and who he could honestly call his friends, after having belonged for a little while, going home is tough. the schoolboys who had made fun of him and played cruel games with his head and his heart had gone to war themselves, but that doesn’t mean they want anything to do with him. they stick with the ones who had made it back, and the few times cooke tries to go over to them, smiling and submissive and ‘hey, lads’, when he sees them in a pub or on the street, they glare at him so coldly that he stops mid-step and sticks his hands in his pockets and turns the other way.
back home in london, he doesn’t have anyone. his father is as terrible as ever, cruel and violent and drunken and belittling. any confidence cooke had gained in the company of people who cared for him disintegrates the second he steps back into his childhood flat. his mother weeps when she sees him, and he hugs her back and smiles and breathes in the smell of her hair; she’s alive, and they’re back together, and he’s happy. but then his father appears in the doorway and cooke shrinks into himself and drops his eyes. over the next few weeks, over tense dinners where cooke sits silently and bows his head and doesn’t make eye contact because that will only make him angrier, his father insists he must have been a coward in the war, that he hadn’t done anything worth being proud of, that mrs baker’s boy down the street got himself two medals, that he’s useless and weak and stupid.
once or twice he tries to argue, tries to stand up for himself - rossi and butler and jondalar and malky had taught him self-confidence and what it was like to be valued, so he tries to use those lessons. it doesn’t end well for him. it doesn’t end well for his mother either, and he isn’t sure whether he stops trying to defend himself for his own sake or for hers. soon enough, he’s back to being the quiet, flinching boy he’d been before the war. and he starts to believe that all the things his father says must be true. he was a coward. he is stupid. he’s always known he’s weak. rossi had only been tolerating him. they’d never been friends. he was just an unwanted tag-along lingering at the edge of the group. they’d been laughing at him. no one had ever really liked him. rossi had only kissed him because he felt sorry for him.
he wants to work at a little tailor shop on the corner - he lurks around outside, looking at the pretty suits and the men with tape measures and dreaming of something he doesn’t quite understand - but when he goes in to apply they shoo him out the door. something about his accent. something about not muddying up the floorboards. something about not trying to rise above his station. he shoves his hands into his pockets and walks aimlessly through the streets until the humiliated blush leaves his cheeks and ears.
eventually, he gets a job at a grocer’s. it’s better than the tailor’s, anyway. he gets to make silly faces at babies and teach swear words to the kids who hang around and get smiled at by nice ladies, and sometimes he nicks a sweet or two from the counter and chews on them on the walk home. he gets reprimanded for it eventually, called into the manager’s office and yelled at until his cheeks are red and that insolent glare he’d learned in the war is back on his face. at first, he just sits there and takes it, like his father has taught him to do. but finally, he gets sick of it, and he’s had enough, and he slips back into the private cooke he’d been, irreverent and loud and cocky and fearless. he shoots to his feet and shouts right back at the old man in his waistcoat, gets all up in his face and grins with the relish of it. he gets fired for it, of course. he howls with laughter on the sidewalk and earns looks from passersby and skips around the block. but once the adrenaline has worn off, once it stops feeling like freedom, he’s left cold and jobless and embarrassed on the street.
somewhere along the way, he stops writing to rossi. he barely replies, anyway, and it just makes him more sure that he’d only ever been a burden. he stops writing to malky last. but he keeps all of their letters, tucks them away safe and secret behind a loose slat in his bedroom wall. he takes them out and reads them sometimes, to remember what it was like to have friends and smile thinly at the pages, when he’s sure his father is asleep and that he isn’t going to burst in and snatch them off him and laugh at him for being a pitiful little queer with a crush on every boy he ever served with.
finally, it’s jondalar who seeks him out. cooke hugs him when he sees him, forgets all about the insecurities he’s been wallowing in for the last year and just launches himself at him. jondalar hugs him back and laughs. they spend a wonderful day together, just wandering round the parks and getting hot chips in greasy newspaper, and cooke feels more like himself, like the person he’d been and the person he’d almost grown to love. he’s loud, and tells jokes, and smiles a lot, and he catches jondalar smiling back at him when he thinks he can’t see, like he’s relieved, like he’s proud, and it makes cooke’s heart feel warm and hopeful.
jondalar brings him home, and introduces him to his parents and his sisters, and cooke stays for dinner and chatters on all evening. he gets on well with jondalar’s youngest sister, and his parents seem to like him. his father is nice and warm and patient. he likes that. after dinner they go for a walk and jondalar tells him he’s been trying to track everyone down. cooke is more relieved than he could ever say to hear that he isn’t the only one they’ve stopped writing to; according to jondalar, most everyone has gone quiet. cooke agrees to help him, and they set to work. for the first time in a long time, the smile on his face is real.
they manage to find them all - by sending letters to families, by scouring newspaper ads - and they’re just about to try and contact everyone when rossi’s letters arrives, one to jondalar and one to cooke. cooke goes running over to jondalar’s flat to show him the letter, all grins and wild eyes and joy. the old team gets back together. everything is good. everything is happy. he belongs again. he’s whole again. he’s him again.
with his friends back in his life - even odd, quiet, old-fashioned schofield - he can start to truly heal, without feeling like he’s just stagnant and afraid and drifting. he gets a job as a milkman and he loves it - loves the route and the people leaving early in the morning for work and school. he hadn’t even really realised he’d been coping with trauma; the immediate threat of his father had pushed all that to the back of his mind. he’d still had to survive now.
one day, when cooke confesses the truth of his home life to rossi, rossi and butler go round to cooke’s home with cooke trailing nervously behind like a child - and they give his father hell. butler just lurks ominously, but rossi goes at him - he tells him he’s scum and nothing and pathetic, and that if he ever tries to find cooke he’ll bash his skull in with a rock and no one will ever find the body. butler guards cooke’s bedroom door while he shuffles past his father and, with rossi’s quiet, gentle help, packs his things. “you, too,” rossi says to cooke’s mother. when she just stares back, wide-eyed and hunted, butler explains, “we’re not leaving you here, love.”
she glances fearfully at her husband, like she’s waiting for him to stop her, like she’s terrified of what he’ll do, like she’s afraid to dare to hope - but when he just stares back down at her with hot, hateful eyes, she skitters to their bedroom and throws a clothes and sentimental few things in a bag and rejoins butler in the corridor. once cooke is ready to go, rossi puts his arm gently around cooke’s mother and ushers her past her husband and out the door. butler slams the door behind them.
and for the first time in cooke’s whole life, and for the first time in years for his mother, they’re both free. they can both smile and laugh freely. they can both start to heal.

Arizona third-grader holds food drives to help in pandemic (AP) Neighbors walked by during their morning stroll, passing families waved from their bikes and drivers slowed down long enough to read the hand-drawn sign—“Dylan’s Food Drive.” The poster was taped to two PVC pipes that were stuck inside construction cones for support. It was a typical scene for 8-year-old Dylan Pfeifer, who has been staging food drives from his home in metro Phoenix in response to the pandemic. Each drive is the culmination of hours of work that involves drawing posters, going door-to-door to hand out flyers and working with his mother to post information on Facebook. Dylan has hosted three drives from his home in Chandler, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) southeast of Phoenix. He said he is planning his next one in June, when summer vacation begins. Dylan says he has collected more than 1,000 cans and boxes of nonperishable food and more than $900 in donations. On its website, St. Mary’s Food Bank in Phoenix says it can convert $1 into seven meals, meaning Dylan has been able to provide more than 6,500 meals on just monetary donations. “It’s rare that you see kids at Dylan’s age who have a handle on what the problem is in their community, the people around them who are affected by it, and have the courage to do something about it,” said Jerry Brown, director of media relations at St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance. Erin Pfeifer said the best part for her, as his mother, has been watching Dylan grow.
Verdict heard around the world: Global reactions to the George Floyd case (Washington Post) The conviction of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in the killing of George Floyd resonated globally, with foreign dignitaries and community leaders reacting to a verdict that revived calls for an international reckoning on racial inequality in justice systems around the world. Chauvin, who is White, was found guilty Tuesday of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the death of Floyd, a Black man he pinned down outside a Minneapolis grocery store last year. Foreign media outlets ran live coverage, showing how the trial resonated far beyond its national context, and highlighting the outsized role the U.S. racial justice conversation plays internationally, as the rest of the world is forced to grapple with its own race relations. Floyd’s killing in May proved to be a moment of reckoning not only in the United States but also across the world, as protesters took to the streets calling for justice in his case and pointing to what they saw as parallels in their communities. In Japan, crowds last year gathered in Osaka holding signs that read “Black lives matter,” while in Germany, protesters took to the streets of Berlin holding placards that said “White silence is violence” and “I can’t breathe.” In Britain last year, they chanted for Mark Duggan, a 29-year-old who was shot by police during his attempted arrest in 2011. In France, they said the name Adama Traoré, a 24-year-old who died in police custody in 2016. In Australia, where Floyd’s death last year spurred a resurgence in activism over Indigenous people’s deaths in police custody, the guilty verdict led to fresh calls for authorities to scrutinize more than 400 Aboriginal deaths in custody.
Surveillance Nation (BuzzFeed News) A controversial facial recognition tool designed for policing has been quietly deployed across the country with little to no public oversight. According to reporting and data reviewed by BuzzFeed News, more than 7,000 individuals from nearly 2,000 public agencies nationwide have used Clearview AI to search through millions of Americans’ faces, looking for people, including Black Lives Matter protesters, Capitol insurrectionists, petty criminals, and their own friends and family members. BuzzFeed News has developed a searchable table of 1,803 publicly funded agencies whose employees are listed in the data as having used or tested the controversial policing tool before February 2020. These include local and state police, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Air Force, state healthcare organizations, offices of state attorneys general, and even public schools. In many cases, leaders at these agencies were unaware that employees were using the tool. Such widespread use of Clearview means that facial recognition may have been used in your hometown with very few people knowing about it. The New York City–based startup claims to have amassed one of the largest-known repositories of pictures of people’s faces—a database of more than 3 billion images scraped without permission from places such as Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. If you’ve posted images online, your social media profile picture, vacation snapshots, or family photos may well be part of a facial recognition dragnet that’s been tested or used by law enforcement agencies across the country.
Violence erupts as Mexico’s deadly gangs aim to cement power in largest ever elections (The Guardian) Violent clashes between rival Mexican criminal groups—and their alleged allies in the security forces—are escalating ahead of mid-term elections in June, triggering a string of political assassinations and the forced displacement of thousands. With more than 21,000 posts in local, state and national government up for election—including 15 state governorships—the 6 June polls are the largest in Mexico’s history, and criminal groups see the elections as an opportunity to further their interests. Much of the recent fighting has focused on the western state of Michoacán, where the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación (Jalisco New Generation cartel) has stepped up its conflict with an alliance of local groups calling themselves the United Cartels. The violence has forced more than a thousand people to flee the area, feeding the flow of migrants heading to the US to seek asylum. “They are leaving because they get caught in the crossfire, because their homes have been destroyed, [and] because the main roads into [the area] have been carved up to stop the advance of the Jaliscos,” said Gregorio López, a Catholic priest who has sheltered refuges in the nearby city of Apatzingán. The Jalisco cartel, Mexico’s fastest-expanding criminal network, considers Michoacán, rich in international trafficking routes and extortion markets, a key building block in its bid for national criminal hegemony. But its decade-long attempt to take over the region has so far been frustrated by the local opponents’ deep political and social roots. With neither side able to impose its designs on the other or willing to back down, more than 15,500 homicides have been recorded here from January 2011 to February this year.
In Putin’s Standoff With Navalny, Many Russians Put Faith in President (WSJ) Thousands of demonstrators are expected to take to the streets in many Russian cities Wednesday in support of Alexei Navalny, the jailed opposition leader who has galvanized popular discontent with the long rule of President Vladimir Putin. But even as the opposition leader stirs dissent, Mr. Putin can count on the support of many Russians who either trust in his leadership, fear the uncertainties of political change or disapprove of Mr. Navalny and his protest movement. “If it were up to me, Putin would stay another 20 years in power,” said fashion designer Irina Larkina from her home in a drab apartment block in this Russian city on the Baltic sea. “He’s the one who has boosted our living standards and given us respect for ourselves again.” Even amid falling living standards and Western sanctions, Mr. Putin continues to enjoy enviable approval ratings. Sociologists say while few may feel deep support for Mr. Putin, the Kremlin can continue to count on approval ratings of around 60%. “There’s a point at which popularity won’t fall any further,” said Lev Gudkov, head of independent polling organization Levada Center. “The country has fallen into two camps, but the Kremlin knows there is a wealth of support it can still draw from within the population, even though it’s fallen in recent years,” he added.
Indian hospitals buckle amid virus surge (AP) Seema Gandotra, sick with the coronavirus, gasped for breath in an ambulance for 10 hours as it tried unsuccessfully to find an open bed at six hospitals in India’s sprawling capital. By the time she was admitted, it was too late, and the 51-year-old died hours later. Rajiv Tiwari, whose oxygen levels began falling after he tested positive for the virus, has the opposite problem: He identified an open bed, but the resident of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh can’t get to it. “There is no ambulance to take me to the hospital,” he said. These tragedies are now everyday occurrences in the vast country, which is seeing its largest surge of the pandemic so far and watching its chronically underfunded health system crumble. Tests are delayed. Medical oxygen is scarce. Hospitals are understaffed and overflowing. Intensive care units are full. Nearly all ventilators are in use, and the dead are piling up at crematoriums and graveyards. India recorded over 250,000 new infections and over 1,700 deaths in the past 24 hours alone, and the U.K. announced a travel ban on most visitors from the country this week. Overall, India has reported more than 15 million cases and some 180,000 deaths—and experts say these numbers are likely undercounted. “The surge in infections has come like a storm and a big battle lies ahead,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in an address to the nation Tuesday night.
Further evidence in case against Indian activists accused of terrorism was planted, new report says (Washington Post) An unknown hacker planted more than 30 documents that investigators deemed incriminating on a laptop belonging to an Indian activist accused of terrorism, a new forensic analysis finds, indicating a more extensive use of malicious software than previously revealed. The report will heighten concerns about the controversial prosecution of a group of government critics under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Known as the Bhima Koregaon case, the prosecution is considered a bellwether for the rule of law in India. Human rights groups and legal experts view the case as an effort by the government to clamp down on critics. The space for dissent has diminished in Modi’s India, where journalists, activists and members of nongovernmental organizations have faced arrest and harassment. The activists accused in the case deny the charges against them. They include a prominent academic, a labor lawyer, a leftist poet, a Jesuit priest and two singers. All are advocates for the rights of the country’s most disadvantaged communities and vocal opponents of the ruling party. Many of them have been jailed for nearly three years as they await trial.
Community pantries offer reprieve from covid-19 hardships in the Philippines (Washington Post) They were of different ages, genders, and walks of life. Some had been there since sunrise. A number carried umbrellas and canvas bags. Hundreds stood in a line that stretched three blocks on Wednesday, all waiting for their turn to stock up on donated food. The community pantry, as it is known, bore a sign: Give what you can, take what you need. A week after the initiative began as a humble cart with free vegetables and canned goods, over 300 similar donation-driven efforts have popped up across the Philippines. The grass-roots action underlines the economic pain Filipinos are experiencing as they battle one of Southeast Asia’s worst coronavirus outbreaks and a harsh lockdown. The idea began when a small-business owner teamed up with local vegetable vendors and farmers who offered their produce to those in need. Within days, it grew into a multi-sector effort encompassing a variety of food and essential items—bread, eggs, fruit, rice, water, noodles—donated by rich and poor alike.
Iran Rattled as Israel Repeatedly Strikes Key Targets (NYT) In less than nine months, an assassin on a motorbike fatally shot an Al Qaeda commander given refuge in Tehran, Iran’s chief nuclear scientist was machine-gunned on a country road, and two separate, mysterious explosions rocked a key Iranian nuclear facility in the desert, striking the heart of the country’s efforts to enrich uranium. The steady drumbeat of attacks, which intelligence officials said were carried out by Israel, highlighted the seeming ease with which Israeli intelligence was able to reach deep inside Iran’s borders and repeatedly strike its most heavily guarded targets, often with the help of turncoat Iranians. The attacks, the latest wave in more than two decades of sabotage and assassinations, have exposed embarrassing security lapses. Most alarming for Iran, Iranian officials and analysts said, was that the attacks revealed that Israel had an effective network of collaborators inside Iran and that Iran’s intelligence services had failed to find them. “That the Israelis are effectively able to hit Iran inside in such a brazen way is hugely embarrassing and demonstrates a weakness that I think plays poorly inside Iran,” said Sanam Vakil, deputy director of the Middle East and North Africa Program at Chatham House.
With most adults now vaccinated, Israelis are busting loose (Washington Post) Israel is partying like it’s 2019. With most adults now vaccinated against the coronavirus and restrictions falling away—including the lifting this week of outdoor mask requirements—Israelis are joyously resuming routines that were disrupted more than a year ago and providing a glimpse of what the future could hold for other countries. Restaurants are booming outside and in. Concerts, bars and hotels are open to those who can flash their vaccine certificates. Classrooms are back to pre-covid capacity. The rate of new infections has plummeted—from a peak of almost 10,000 a day to about 140—and the number of serious coronavirus cases in many hospitals is down to single digits. The emergency covid-19 ward at Sheba Medical Center near Tel Aviv resumed duty as a parking garage, and waiting rooms are suddenly flooded with non-covid patients coming for long-deferred treatments.
Rebels threaten to march on capital as Chad reels from president’s battlefield death (Reuters) Rebel forces set their sights on Chad’s capital N’Djamena on Wednesday following the battlefield death of President Idriss Deby, threatening to bring more disruption to a country vital to international efforts to combat Islamist militants in Africa. Schools and some businesses were open in N’Djamena on Wednesday but many people had opted to stay home and the streets were quiet, a Reuters witness said.

Hi, i'm really interested in your art supplies, like what do you prefer to use? I really like watercolor and ink but I've been wanting to try a new medium
Mainly, gouache and watercolour are my fave. I'll occasionally do pencil work. Rn I love digital tho now
The gouache I use is either eraldo di paolo gouache tubes that I've set up into a pallet or my reeves gouache that I've also got palleted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For pencils I use whatever I have lol. I use paper stub blender things to blend tho.
The brown paper there^ is literally just from the inside of a gift wrapping paper roll lol. For paper I use quill sketch books with 120gsm paper for Japanese ink, India ink, water colour, alcohol markers , gouache, and pencil work and stuff like liners. Never had any bleed through and I've done portraits with gouache and watercolour on the paper. Just a bit of washi tape on the border for warping and you're all g.
For water colour I either use reeves or this Korean brand mungyo watercolour, my mungyo set was super pricy tho but the pigments are insaneeeeee.
Also an important thing is kneaded erasers, your best friend.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I use a lot of tombow brush pens too, that's what in that brown jacket sketch I did while watching some shit movie.
I've recently gotten into digital art! Here's my first attempt^ cropped cause her eyes I'm not happy with yet lil. The drawing tablet I use is a 14inch wacom one I got from an animation student friend ages ago. The software I'm using is medibang, free to download.
I own oil paint too, and acrylic but they take a lot of time lol. I enjoyed oil, wonderful blending time.
Gouache is what I tend to reach for, beautiful medium, I love the way it allows you to blend. Great for layers and working for portraits and stuff, allows you to work from dark to light and vise versa. I use it for when I paint hands, which is quite often as they are one of my fave things to paint or draw lol.
If you're interested in links for any of the mediums ive mentioned and tutorials I've got in my art playlis I'll be happy to recommend some channels.
Also, feel free to message me!!! I'm always open and excited to talk about this stuff. My messages are open to everyone. I can show you some othet stuff and pics of what I use if you want and message me.

(Thank you to @percabeth15, @upsettimyspagetthi and @parrlyn-4life for tagging me!)
Name: Becca
Pronouns: She/her
Nickname: I’ll take any variation of Rebecca you want to throw at me.
Zodiac sign: Libra.
Height: I measured myself once a year or so ago and then immediately forgot what it is. How does everyone know how tall they are? Do you all have secret rooms with floor to ceiling measuring tapes that I don’t know about or something? I’d say I’m about average height anyway.
Languages: English only, to my utter shame. One of my biggest regrets is fucking up my French GCSE and then compounding that failure by just not making more than the most fleeting of attempts to build on my dubious skills in my own time.
Nationality: English
Favourite season: Autumn. Summer is a hot sweaty blinding-bright mess, winter is depressingly either Too Cold or Not Cold Enough and spring is sort of nice but I can’t enjoy it properly because I’m getting anxious over the coming of summer. But the crispness of autumn is perfect.
Favourite scent: The smell of tomato plants- sort of sweet and earth and sharp? I grew tomato plants at uni that never even flowered just so the kitchen could smell like a greenhouse.
Favourite colour: Grass green and dark purple.
Favourite animal: Sloth. I have a burgeoning sloth family atop the wardrobe of our spare room and sloth stickers stuck all over my work computer and phone. Their sleepy calm is so restful.
Favourite fictional characters: It depends on what fandom hole I’m currently stuck in, but in general terms...Amy from Gone Girl. Hannah from Siblings. Sister Monica Joan from Call The Midwife.
Tea, coffee or hot chocolate: Hot chocolate if it’s dark and rich. Coffee I drink at home but not in public because I only like instant coffee with cinnamon and brown sugar and people judge you for it. Tea tastes best when it’s made by my girlfriend and brought to me unexpectedly because it makes me feel ridiculously spoiled and decadent.
Average sleep hours: 9ish, since I’m furloughed. 7-8ish when I’m working.
Dog or cat person: Cat, forever. Dogs are terrifying to me and I have the bite scars up and down my left leg to prove it. If a dog runs near me, I tend to freeze up. If they’re running and barking, I have to get away fast.
Number of blankets: One duvet and one cookie-monster blue fleecy blanket, half crunchy and ruined from me getting over confident and toasting it in the dryer.
Dream trip: I used to want to go to India or Vietnam or back to Thailand or China but honestly, as I’ve gotten older, the thought of travel makes me feel really anxious. I’d like to go back to the Edinburgh Fringe with money one day though- be rich enough to stay for weeks, to be able to stay somewhere right in the centre, to be able to eat wherever we like, not to have to worry at all.
Blog established: Back long long ago when I was but an angsty little Year Ten (or thereabouts).
Followers: 559
Random fact: I can and will babble at your for as long as you’ll stand it about Interesting Historical Facts. My current favourite is about the medieval peasants who held a trial for some field mice. Mice were sentenced to be exiled to the next town for eating the crops, but granted safe passage, with extra care guaranteed for pregnant or elderly mice in the party and this is how Brambley Hedge began.
I tag anyone who would like to do this!

Rolling Stone article 1981, re Corroboree/Waiata LP.
A Trimmed Split Enz Takes Another Step Ahead
In 1980 two Australian albums - East by Cold Chisel and True Colours by Split Enz - racked up extraordinary sales figures, and now stand as two of the biggest selling Australian records ever, both continuing to sell after having passed the 200,000 mark recently. This year these two bands released new albums and the early figures are even more startling. Cold Chisel’s Swingsthift, a double live set, went almost immediately to the Number One slot, carried there by the band’s huge popularity and boosted by its scooping of the TW Week/Countdown Rock Awards.
On April 6, 1981, Split Enz’ seventh album, Corroboree, was released in Australia. After eight hours in the record stories, it clocked in on the national charts at Number Fifty-six, and the following week it had reached Number Eight. As we go to press, Corroboree had sold in excess of 50,000 units, and the Number One spot looks a certainty. While the Australian public takes the latest Split Enz offering to its heart, the band itself has other crops to reap, and to that end, departed Australia for a world tour on April 19. The four-month tour will see the band playing across New Zealand, America, England, Japan and Europe, and it looks like this time they’ll break into these lucrative markets. One source tipped, “This time, for the first time, Split Enz will see some returns for their efforts. They deserve it.”
Split Enz were originally a New Zealand band, but they’ve spent so much time in Australia in the past that they’re considered a local band on these shores. Before departing for their world tour the band played a quick “outback tour” which covered many of the country centres often ignored by successful acts. Split Enz remain almost slavishly faithful to their audience. These concerts, and concerts they played in capital cities prior to leaving, were all sell-outs. That goes without saying.
And before leaving, Split Enz’ two frontmen, the Finn brothers, found time in their hectic schedule to speak to Rolling Stone Contributing Editor Miranda Brown. The Tim and Neil Finn she spoke to were members of a band in the midst of a process of change, and having just replaced their former drummer, Malcolm Green, with their percussionist, Noel Crombie, they had a lot to talk about. Here’s the result.
By Miranda Brown
“What we needed was a bit of a kick up the bum,” says Neil Finn with a boy-next-door grin as he recalls recent events that he, as co-spokesman (along with brother Tim), must explain to the Australian public before Split Enz absent themselves on a five-month world tour.
The subject is the recent shakedown that marks the beginning of yet another Cycle in Split Enz’ constant change-and-develop career. The last began with the addition of bassist Nigel Griggs and Neil to the line-up and reached fruition with the album, True Colours. This latest began with the departure of drummer, amalcolm Green, who’d joined the band late in 1977.
“It all happened in about three days,” explains Neil. “We’re always been aware of Malcolms short-coming in terms of drumming - well, as far as not wanting to move ahead anyway - but we’d never really considered it until the beginning of the year and then suddenly everyone started feeling the same way. Once that happens in a band, once there’s a hint of change, you can’t stop it, or you get really stifled. if we’d done this tour for five months with the way things were, it could have threatened the very existence of the band.”
What is most surprising is not so much Green’s departure, but the band’s decision, rather than add another member, simply to switch Noel Crombie from percussion to drums.
“It’s funny, when we’re in a room with all five of us.” says Neil. “It always feels like there’s one missing. It’s the smallest Split Enz has ever been and it’s very good.
“In a way, Noel was a non-musician before. He was almost a figure-head on stage and he used to bang things and people found him very entertaining. Now he’s a fully-fledged musician.”
Neil brims with self-confidence as he speaks of the changes that Australia glimpsed on the first leg of the world tour. “We were a new band at the first date of this tour,” he says. “It was our first gig.”
A newly designed stage set-up includes sound duplicated on both sides of the stage, Crombie-designed ultra-violet costumes that make the Enz resemble sugar-plum fairies, and the rises that bring Crombie and keyboardist, Eddie Rayner, into full view. As with their music, the stripping down of personnel to essentials have brought previously obscured qualities into view.
True Colours revealed Neil’s considerable songwriting talents. The new album, Corroboree, includes a few more gems. As well as four songs by Neil and five by Tim, there’s two instrumentals composed by keyboardist, Eddie Rayner.
“He’s got hundreds of them hidden away.” says Neil. “They’d be perfect for a soundtrack.”
In their inimitable fashion, the Enz have dispensed with Corroboree album questions by printing a compilation of quotes culled from spoken tapes they each made. The most interesting quotes are those of Rayner on his two tracks, ‘Albert of India’ and ‘Wail’.
“‘Wail’ was basically an experiment to see if I could sing and I couldn’t. Singing is confidence and attitude and developing a style. My voice on ‘Wail’ was flanged, phased, limited, compressed, distorted, reverbed, mixed-back plus a touch of echo.
“‘Albert of India’ is atmospheric. That is what an instrumental has to be about, atmosphere and melody. I’m pleased. Some people say my tracks are very heavy. I have always been into heavy composers like Sibelius and Rachmaninoff.”
As usual, Split Enz are several steps ahead of the public. Corroboree was recorded last year and includes Green’s drumming. It is, for Neil, part of the old cycle, “part of a transition which is not as evident on the album as we are aware of it now. There are areas that we want to approach from a completely different angle now.” And there’s also the interesting prospect of compositions by Noel Crombie.
People are still calling Neil Finn ‘Tim,’ but he’s no longer living in his big brother’s shadow. In fact, it’s becoming the reverse. It was Neil’s song, ‘I Got You’ that led the band to  a change of fortune and the top of charts all over the globe.
Between a stream of words, Neil smokes a cigarette, sips a coffee with cream and throws nervous glances at the Sebel Townhouse door. He and the other Enz are spending their last few days here before heading off to Brisbane, New Zealand and then the U.S. Their photo sits in the company of other ‘Internationals’ at the entrance way to the Sebel.
One of the places they’ll first for the first time is the deep South of America.
“That’s going to be sort of cosmic. Everyone’s stories of that area are so strange. They shoot hitch-hikers,” he says in awe and anticipation “...And road-signs! You drive around the country and the road-signs are full of holes, and they hand in their guns at the door when they go to clubs!”
None of Split Enz were shocked at the news of Reagan’s shooting. Nor do they fear treading through that gun-crazed land. “We’re not important enough. Those people go for the best they can.”
After America, it’s Europe and England. “It depends on what’s fashionable, what the English think of Split Enz. When punk was happening Split Enz were laughed at. When we go back, I can almost imagine us being semi-trendy because of all the awful Spandau Ballet stuff. We were dressing like that three years ago!”
Then it’s Canada, where the bands are popular enough to play 2 to 3000 seat venues, and after that Japan for the first time. I’ll be interesting to see how Split Enz go in Japan, where teen idols are followed around the country by scores of adoring young girls. Even in Australia, the cute young Finn is a schoolgirl’s dream-boy.
Neil blushes at this notion, however, laughing and confused at the same time. “I suppose, young girls and that, yes, well, when they’re smiling at you, you’ve got to... you can’t help but notice them. when they’re running at you from a hundred yards. But, (taking a deep breath) but they’re fun, it’s fun having young screaming kids upfront. When I’m having a good night I love it. I can see faces and instant reactions to things. If I’m having an awkward night or a nervous night, I can’t even look at them.”

Famous Muses & Groupies in Rock Music Pt. 34
MUSE: Pattie Boyd (full name Patricia Anne Boyd)
Pattie truly needs no introduction, but here’s one anyway, lol. Pattie was born on March 17th, 1944 in Somerset, England. Like a lot of girls born on St. Patrick’s Day, she was given the name Patricia as a reference. She was the first born child of Colin and Diana Boyd, and has three younger siblings: Colin Jr., Jenny and Paula. Later after Colin and Diana divorced, Diana re-married and Pattie gained four more half-siblings. Both Jenny and Paula are former models and music muses like their big sister. From 1948-53, the Boyd family lived in Nairobi, Kenya while Colin was discharged from the Royal Air Force. Pattie and her siblings were primarily educated at private schools after the family moved back to England, with Pattie working as a shampoo girl at a salon after graduation. It was there that a client who worked for Honey Magazine convinced Pattie to give modeling a try. Soon the young blonde girl was being hired for advertisements, TV commercials, fashion spreads, runways/catwalks and magazine covers by 1963. She was a favorite of photographer David Bailey and a muse to designer Ossie Clark. Even film director Richard Lester was somewhat inspired by Pattie after he worked with her on a snack commercial and then gave her a minor role in his film A Hard Day’s Night (1964). She also supplied a cameo in Lester’s follow-up zany comedy The Knack…and How to Get It (1965).
Not only is Pattie considered one of the original supermodels of the 1960s next to Jean Shrimpton and Twiggy, but she is also the quintessential music muse in classic rock. During the filming of A Hard Day’s Night, Pattie’s co-star, George Harrison of the Beatles, asked her out. Her popularity then soared even higher as the girlfriend of the most famous guitarist of the British Invasion. George and Pattie were THE power couple of rock music scene in the ‘60s, and lived the high life of Swinging London. The love birds eventually married on January 21st, 1966, and spent most of their relationship living on the properties Kinfauns in Surrey and later Friar Park in Oxfordshire. On the exterior, Pattie had it all: more photoshoot and ad offers than ever, four Vogue Magazine covers in 1969, an attractive, charming rockstar husband, and friendships with fellow muses and stars like Marianne Faithfull and Jane Asher. Pattie and Jenny even ran their own fashion boutique in 1968 called Juniper in Chelsea Market, after the song ‘Jennifer Juniper,’ Donovan wrote for Jenny. Like most musician wives/girlfriends, Pattie was at many of the band’s events and shows. She, along with Cynthia Lennon and Maureen Starkey, traveled with the Beatles on location for the production of Help! (1965), the band’s second film with Lester. She was also at the live 1967 TV taping of ‘All You Need Is Love;’ appeared in the music videos for ‘A Day in the Life’ (1967) and ‘Something’ (1969); was at the movie premiere of Yellow Submarine (1968); modeled for Apple Boutique—owned by the band in ’67-68; visited Rishikesh, India with the band on their spring 1968 spiritual retreat, and so on.
But on the interior, George & Pattie had almost as many problems as they did perks. Only a couple years into their marriage, Pattie discovered she was infertile. In her 2007 memoir Wonderful Tonight, Pattie says that George wanted to start a family eventually and didn’t want to adopt. He also told her she should quit modeling when they got engaged, but she was still interested in her career. A year into dating, the two had an unfortunate experience where they drank spiked tea with LSD at a party, and the final year of their relationship George was a cokehead. Though both were interested in learning about Indian culture at first, George became obsessed with playing sitar and practicing Hinduism to the point of it effecting their sex life. And of course, George and his bandmates still had groupies on tours and in the studio, which Pattie couldn’t accompany him on because of her fashion jobs. George later had a quick affair with model Charlotte Martin in 1968 while Charlotte was spending the week in their house. In 1973, George & Pattie participated in a wife-swap with Ronnie & Krissy Wood, with George and Krissy going on vacation together, and Ronnie and Pattie staying behind at Friar Park. The final straw, as Pattie considers, was George sleeping with bandmate Ringo Starr’s wife Maureen in 1974. The Harrisons officially divorced in June 1977.
But the biggest instigator and infamous blow to the Harrison marriage was George’s ‘best friend’ Eric Clapton. A guitar god on stage and in the studio, but kinda a douche at home. In 1968, Eric grew strongly attracted to Pattie, to the point that he dumped live-in girlfriend Charlotte Martin because he couldn’t stop thinking about Pattie. In Wonderful Tonight, Pattie suggests the main reason Charlotte slept with George was out of spite from the break-up. Naturally Pattie denied Eric in 1969 when he first declared his love (though in Eric’s own 2007 memoir, Clapton, he claims they’d already made out at this point). Rather than move on, he spent six months shacking up and doing drugs with Pattie’s 17-year-old sister Paula. After his fling with Paula, Eric spent a year with his new band, Derek & the Dominos, composing and recording the 1970 album ‘Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs.’ Every track, excluding the covers, was written about Pattie. It sucks Eric was basically a creep during all this because, IMO, ‘Layla’ is the great rock anthem of all time, and the rest of the album is amazing.
Pattie eventually did officially reciprocate Eric’s feelings in 1975, and they married on March 27th, 1979. Except that Eric was stoned or drunk their whole relationship, carried on with groupies on the road, began seeing future wife Lory del Santo while still with Pattie, was distant emotionally, etc. Basically a repeat of her marriage to George, but 100x worse. The worst moment was probably when Pattie was still living with George, and Eric threatened to snort a bag of heroin if she didn’t leave George (why do people like them together??). Pattie also attempted to get pregnant in 1984 with vitro fertilization, but that only caused two miscarriages. :( She moved out of their house in 1987, and filed for divorce a year later.
So what was the consolation for all this bullshit for two decades? How about a dozen of the best songs ever written. Forget ‘Layla,’ what about ‘Bell Bottom Blues,’ and ‘Wonderful Tonight?’ Or ‘I Need You?’ Or ‘If I Needed Someone?’ Or ‘For You Blue’ and ‘Old Brown Shoe?’ ‘Something??’ Yeah, I know George denied the last one, but LBR, he down played a lot of Beatles stuff after he married and had a kid with Olivia Arias. So while Pattie could hold a grudge and completely ignore her musical impact like Jane Asher, she’s owned up to the title of rock’s greatest muse; despite years of jealous fangirls and sexist fanboys. #kween Since the 1990s, Pattie’s been with third husband Rod Weston and has toured with two photography exhibits in 2006-2010 and 2011 on her own photos she’s shot. She’s also appeared in various documentaries like “The Beatles Anthology” (1995-96), Living in the Material World (2011) and Life in 12 Bars (2017). In her book, she retrospectively called George the love of her life, and felt Eric was probably only obsessed with her out of a musical jealousy with George.
