Choosing the Ideal Sony TV: A Guide
Navigating the diverse world of Sony TVs can be a challenge, given the vast range of options. To assist you, here's a guide focusing on the essential factors to consider: 1. Screen Size: Sony offers a spectrum of sizes, ranging from compact 32-inch units perfect for bedrooms, up to sprawling 85-inch screens suitable for large living spaces. The ideal size largely depends on the room's dimensions and viewing distance. A general rule of thumb: the distance from the TV to your seating should be approximately twice the size of the TV. So, a 55-inch screen would fit well with a seating distance of about 110 inches. 2. Display Technology: Sony's collection boasts various display technologies including LED, mini-LED, OLED, and QD-OLED: - LED TVs are modern iterations of LCDs, known for their energy efficiency and versatile backlighting, offering decent contrast and brightness levels. - Mini-LED TVs are like LED's advanced siblings. Their smaller backlighting LEDs provide improved contrast levels. - OLED TVs, recognized for their stellar picture quality, utilize self-emitting pixels for detailed and sharp images. Though they may lack in peak brightness compared to other types, they offer unparalleled contrast. - QD-OLED TVs, blending QLED and OLED attributes, deliver bright visuals while maintaining OLED-level picture quality. 3. Resolution: A TV's resolution defines its clarity. While 4K is now the standard, and reasonably affordable, 8K offers a future-ready option. However, for smaller screens (around 32 inches), a Full HD display is sufficient due to the high pixel density, ensuring crisp visuals. 4. Gaming Capabilities: For avid gamers, a high refresh rate (120Hz or above) is crucial for smooth gameplay. Some TVs are equipped with dedicated gaming menus for optimal settings, and features like VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) ensure a seamless, lag-free gaming experience. By focusing on these aspects, you'll be better equipped to choose the perfect Sony TV tailored to your needs and preferences. Read the full article

7 Best 4K TVs in India to buy in 2023
Picture Quality:
Look for a TV with a 4K Ultra HD resolution, which offers four times the pixels of a Full HD TV, resulting in sharper and more detailed images. Consider TVs with technologies like OLED, QLED, or Mini-LED for better color accuracy, deeper blacks, and improved contrast.
HDR Support:
High Dynamic Range (HDR) allows for a wider range of colors and increased contrast, providing a more realistic and immersive viewing experience. Look for TVs that support HDR formats like HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, or HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) for enhanced picture quality.
Smart Features:
Check if the TV has built-in smart features like Wi-Fi connectivity, access to popular streaming services, and a user-friendly interface. Smart TVs allow you to stream content, browse the web, and download apps. Consider platforms like Android TV, webOS, or Google TV for a wide range of app options.
Audio Quality:
While the focus is often on the picture quality, audio is equally important for a captivating experience. Look for TVs with technologies like Dolby Atmos or advanced sound systems that provide clear dialogue, immersive surround sound, and deep bass.
Size and Placement:
Consider the size of the TV based on the viewing distance and the space available in your room. For a 4K TV, a larger screen size, such as 55 inches or more, can showcase the finer details. Ensure that the TV fits comfortably in your room and consider wall-mounting options if needed.
Connectivity and Ports:
Check the availability and types of ports, such as HDMI, USB, and audio outputs, to connect external devices like gaming consoles, soundbars, or set-top boxes. More HDMI ports are beneficial if you have multiple devices to connect simultaneously.
Price and Brand Reputation:
Set a budget based on your requirements and compare prices among different brands and models. Consider reputable brands known for their quality, customer support, and reliability. Read reviews and customer feedback to gauge the performance and durability of the TV.

Disney+ is here, and it brought 4K 'Star Wars'
Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.
This morning, we have a fresh holiday gift guide for you to flip through, plus all the information you might need about Disney+ now it's actually available. In other news, there's a new rumor or two about Apple's augmented reality plans, plus we reviewed Microsoft's larger Surface Laptop 3. Oh -- and the Sonic the Hedgehog movie is back with a new trailer showing off Sonic's de-creepified design.
Just in time.Engadget's 2019 holiday gift guide is here!
After months of thinking, curating, photographing and more thinking, we've come up with a holiday gift guide that covers all the bases (and budgets), from laptops and mobile devices, to toys, to the smart home, to book and media recommendations (only on nerdy subjects, of course). All told, there are more than 150 items in our guide, spanning 13 categories, with advice from 25 of our writers and editors. You know, the people testing and reviewing this stuff all year long.
And we're not done yet: We have additional picks and buying advice coming throughout this week, including gifts for coffee geeks, shopping for hypebeasts and our favorite wireless earbuds.
Another day, another streaming TV subscription.Disney+ is here
After plenty of teasing, Disney's streaming service is live in the US, Canada and the Netherlands. Some of us are already streaming the first episode of The Mandalorian, while others are checking out a few classics that are available for the first time in Ultra HD 4K, including several Star Wars movies and Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
Not satisfied? 16 of 23 Marvel Cinematic Universe movies are included as part of the $6.99 per month Disney+ package, plus access to a massive archive of The Simpsons. If you're still on the fence, there is a seven-day trial period.
Google wants to speed up the web, even if it has to embarrass some developers.Chrome may shame slow-loading sites with 'speed badging'
The idea is to flag sites designed in a way that makes them slow, taking into account historical loading times. Eventually, Google might let you know if a page could take a while to display properly because of your device or connection, too. On the other hand, it'll reward fast-loading sites with positive "speed badging."
Ready for some rumors?Apple's AR headset might not arrive until 2022
The Information sources claim Apple held an internal presentation in October relaying expectations to release its AR headset (really a mixed AR/VR headset) in 2022 and AR glasses in 2023.
A little later in the day Bloomberg reported, based on its sources, that Apple is planning to release a new pro iPad "as early as" the first half of 2020, and that it would include both two cameras as well as a Face ID-like 3D sensor system to help people create "reconstructions of rooms, objects and people." The rumored 3D sensor on iPhones would come later -- you might have to get the iPad Pro if you want Apple's first crack at the new augmented reality tech.
The strap-as-support design dates back at least to the Penny IV sneaker of 20 years ago.Seahawks LB Shaquem Griffin debuts his Nike FlyEase cleat on Monday Night Football
After developing FlyEase shoes based on Lebron and Jordan models, Nike has adapted its technology for zip-up basketball sneakers for a whole new sport: football. These unique cleats are made for a (so far) one-of-a-kind athlete -- Seattle Seahawks linebacker Shaquem Griffin.
To perform the way he needs them to, the cleats have what the company calls a "battle sock." Instead of using laces to adapt the fit to its wearer's foot, it tightens with a three-strap system that secures both sides, and a knit cuff at the top that stretches so he can get his foot into it quickly.
How about a new controller or a battery pack?2019 Engadget Holiday Gift Guide: The best Switch and Switch Lite accessories
If you've got a Switch owner in your life, an accessory or two could make the perfect holiday gift.
A large laptop that's powerful and portable comes at a cost.Surface Laptop 3 review (15-inch): Bigger, but not always better
The 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 has a sleek, clean design on the outside and AMD Ryzen hardware inside, which is powerful enough to play games like Overwatch in 1080p. So what could be a problem? The port selection is skimpy (one USB-A and one USB-C) and even with nearly eight hours of battery life in our testing, it falls far short of the 16 hours we got from the Surface Laptop 2. The high-end version we reviewed costs $2,099, which makes it hard to recommend when a (slightly-heavier) XPS 15 offers more powerful graphics for about $1,500.
But wait, there's more...

Selecting the Top Smart TVs:
Our Criteria In consultation with our specialists, they emphasized the significance of several aspects when making a purchase: - Resolution & Upscaling: Resolution delineates the detail level a TV screen can exhibit, defined by its pixel count. A smaller screen with fewer pixels can display less intricate details, while a more pixel-dense screen, like a 4K TV that houses approximately 4,000 pixels in a single row, offers richer detail. Upscaling is the process where content of a lower resolution is enhanced to fit a high-resolution display. This factor played a key role in our selections. - Format Support: This alludes to the spectrum of HDR (high dynamic range) formats, audio standards, and specialized picture modes (such as game-optimized settings like ALLM) the screen incorporates. Generally, a wider range is preferable. - Panel Type: This refers to the core visual component of the TV—the rectangular screen that projects images. We factored in various panel technologies including OLED, QLED, QD-OLED, and Mini LED, ensuring we covered top choices across diverse budget ranges. For deeper insights on these technologies, continue reading below.
Smart TV Platforms: Which Reigns is the Best?
A pivotal aspect to ponder upon when purchasing a smart TV is its integrated software. This embedded platform connects you to a plethora of streaming services, apps, and other functionalities. Each offers unique advantages and setbacks. Predominantly, top-tier TVs employ proprietary software. For instance, Samsung gravitates towards Tizen, its in-house OS, while LG is inclined towards the webOS platform. Both platforms present a similar user interface with a horizontal layout on their homepages, extensive app support, and hands-free voice recognition features. LG's version, however, boasts a slightly more refined appearance complemented by a versatile remote. In contrast, Samsung offers its TV+ service, granting free access to a multitude of channels. Brands such as Hisense and TCL utilize diverse third-party platforms across their range. Consequently, you might encounter platforms like Roku or Google TV, depending on the specific model. Roku is lauded for its user-friendliness, modifiable icon grid, distinctive screensaver, comprehensive streaming service support, and a superior search function. Google TV, integrated in numerous Sony TVs, guarantees seamless Android device synchronization, intuitive navigation, and the inclusion of Google Assistant. According to Teoh, Android/Google TV has an edge regarding app support. Maciejewski advises consumers to prioritize content accessibility. Although major streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, and Apple TV+ are almost universally available, discrepancies exist. It's prudent to verify if your preferred content is available. Supplementary Factors to Weigh When Buying a Smart TV: Your ideal TV should be self-sufficient. However, if its innate OS isn't to your liking, auxiliary streaming devices like Roku or Apple TV 4K can offer a remedy. Teoh emphasizes the significance of the TV's primary purpose. "For gaming aficionados anticipating usage with next-gen consoles such as the PS5 or Xbox Series X, a TV with robust HDMI 2.1 support, like those from LG or Samsung, is crucial for a 4K, 120Hz gaming experience. Conversely, if you're inclined towards news channels or intend to employ the TV as a computer monitor, OLED might pose burn-in risks." Sound quality is another crucial factor. Most smart TVs have a basic audio output ranging from 10-20W. However, upscale models can offer up to 160W, each with distinct audio quality. For enhanced audio experiences, investing in a dedicated soundbar or speaker system is advisable. Our Expert Collaborators: Our platform, Select, collaborates with professionals possessing unparalleled expertise, substantiated by pertinent education and/or experience. We guarantee that their insights and recommendations are autonomous, free from undisclosed financial biases. Vincent Teoh is a recognized TV calibration expert and the brain behind the YouTube channel HDTVTest. Marek Maciejewski assumes the role of Product Development Director at TCL, while Keith Doughty is an official at the 8K distribution specialist firm, QuVis.
Choosing the Right TV Resolution:
Resolution, in essence, signifies your TV screen's clarity, determined by the pixel count. A small screen with fewer pixels will display less detail than a larger screen brimming with pixels. Currently, 4K is the benchmark resolution for many TVs, incorporating enhancements like HDR (high dynamic range) for richer colors, or Dolby Atmos for superior audio. Typically, TVs 40 inches or above are 4K, whereas smaller ones might be 720p or 1080p. Due to the proximity of pixels on compact screens, the advantages of 4K are less distinguishable from a usual viewing distance. For those seeking a lavish visual experience, 8K TVs might be the choice. With approximately 8,000 horizontal pixels and a whopping 33 million pixels overall, the clarity is astounding. However, 8K content is scarce. These TVs upscale video to mimic greater clarity. But remember, 8K is a premium choice. A 4K TV usually offers significant savings. Marek Maciejewski from TCL Europe suggests that 8K truly shines on larger screens. Opting for 8K requires both a large screen and close proximity to realize its benefits. Also, 8K consumes more power due to its advanced pixel technology. Keith Doughty from Quvis believes the choice hinges on personal preference and budget. The difference between 4K and 8K is subtle unless you're up close. However, for a future-ready setup, investing in higher resolution might be worthwhile. He notes that while 8K offers meticulous detail, lower resolutions can be more pleasing to the eye. Panel Type Breakdown (LED, OLED, QLED, and Mini LED): Which Suits You? The panel, the TV's visual centerpiece, varies in technology across models. Most TVs deploy LED (light-emitting diode) panels, utilizing backlights or sidelights to illuminate the display. QLED is an advancement of LED, enhancing color and contrast. Many Samsung TVs embrace QLED, with premium models tagged 'Neo QLED' boasting superior brightness and color. Mini LED TVs are LED variants with tinier diodes, offering heightened brightness precision. OLED (organic LED), distinctively, omits backlights. Pixels in OLEDs self-illuminate, delivering unparalleled color richness. This technology can achieve pure black shades, rendering cinematic visuals, though they might lack the brightness of other panels. Brands often diversify their panel offerings. For instance, Samsung and TCL lean towards QLED and Mini LED, while giants like LG, Panasonic, and Sony endorse OLED for their flagship models. Emerging technologies like QD-OLED merge QLED brightness with OLED's contrast. In summary, LED or QLED TVs are budget-friendly choices, OLED caters to those desiring a premium balance, and for an unparalleled viewing spectacle, Mini LED or QD-OLED is the go-to.
Guide to Buying Smart TVs:
When you're in the market for a smart TV, consider these four pivotal factors recommended by experts: size, app compatibility, panel type, and the platform ecosystem. Let's delve deeper into each aspect. - Size Matters: It's imperative that your chosen TV fits harmoniously within your space, whether that's wall-mounted, set on a stand, or positioned elsewhere. Always measure the intended location and cross-check with the TV's dimensions. - App Accessibility: While the majority of smart TVs support bigwig streaming platforms like Netflix or Disney+, you may find discrepancies in the support of lesser-known apps, be it specific music streaming apps or exclusive news platforms. - Panel Proficiency: Understand the strengths and weaknesses of different panel types to align with your viewing habits. OLEDs, for instance, are ideal for cinematic experiences in dimmer settings. In contrast, bright LED or mini LED displays ensure better visibility for daytime viewers. Read the full article
