FIRST DATE ft. oikawa, iwaizumi, tendou, semi

author’s note: since i went pretty in-depth, i didn’t cover all the characters i wanted to and will probably continue this as a series. if there’s someone you wanna see lmk! 💘

oikawa:

let’s be real, oikawa has had a million first dates

but with you, he wants it to be special and something he’s never done before. so he books a baking lesson at a famous bakery

as usual, he’s well groomed and well dressed. even put on a lil spritz of cologne to impress you

brings his polaroid so you can take pictures after 🥺

he’s probably at least 10 minutes late LMAOOOO... something about not being able to find his usual gel and having to make do

oikawa is a horrible baker, he sucks at following instructions. he wants to improvise despite not knowing what he’s doing

but he’s so cute you can’t stay mad! he lowkey messes up on purpose just so he can get more of your attention and then watch you concentrate as you attempt to fix his mistakes

will praise you, but will also praise himself too for doing the bare minimum... he keeps asking you if you saw him crack that one egg 🙄

lots of playful banter and skinship, like an accidental brush against his arm, your hands touching as you pass the mixer to him, or when he ruffles your hair

dots a lil whipped cream on your nose and takes a photo before you can stop him. he won’t stop laughing at it throughout the date but really he just thinks you’re so cute 

despite taking a ton of photos of you and of the date, he’s not using his phone otherwise to go on social media or answer any texts. he just wants to be in the moment with you but also record the best moments

while you two wait for the cake to bake in the oven, he leaves to buy boba for you two

super impressed with the cake after it’s out of the oven and keeps praising you for it! (as he should, you carried the team!)

surprisingly much better at decorating the cake than baking it. will try and write “i like you, (y/n)!” on it with frosting

will spoonfeed you the cake and expect you to spoonfeed him too

since he’s really trying to take things slow with you (unlike his previous romances), he’ll stick to a kiss on the forehead and multiple times on the hands before the two of you part ways

iwaizumi

the most romantic, soft picnic date

and being the perfect gentleman he is, he’s prepped some of your favorite foods, brought a blanket and speakers, and is picking you up

ngl the car ride is a bit awkward. when he picks you up, he’s just so stunned at how lovely you look! he musters up a compliment but he’s red in the face and can barely meet your eyes tbh

you’ve brought some food too. the two of you definitely overpacked, but he was scared you might be hungry

he takes you to a nice park by the lake and sets everything up under a tree

the JOY he feels from watching you eat his food! the way your face lights up when you take a bite into a small sandwich he made

he eases into the conversation as you two eat. before you know it, the two of you are sharing your thoughts, laughing, even teasing each other

you try to teach him how to make a crown of dandelions. just imagine the two of you twinning your dandelion crowns 😭

as you get full, he scoots closer to you and the two of you get super cuddly. puts his big arms around your shoulders in a back hug while you’re sitting down and you just feel super secure

HE IS. 100% AN IG BF and will take photos of you if you want! (just think about it, oikawa has probably forced him to take so many photos of him)

puts his jacket on you if you get cold. just wants you to be comfy

after the picnic, he takes you back to his place to watch a movie

you let him pick what movie and of course he picks GODZILLA

but somehow he makes it romantic??? the two of you are cuddled up on the couch, he’s holding your hand under the blanket

he keeps asking you if you’re comfortable, and halfway through the movie, when you’re nuzzling your head into his shoulder, he plants a kiss on your forehead

he pauses the movie to tell you how much he likes you right before the two of you kiss. godzilla can wait 😌

tendou:

ARCADE DATE! 

the two of you are very casual with each other, so you probably didn’t even consider this a date to begin with. but little do you know what’s about to go down... 

tendou’s actually not nervous for the date. given that he’s excellent at reading others, he already knows the feelings you have for him. he’s just thinking about how to make his move 

SO! MUCH! FUN! you play all kinds of games, from old school ones to rpg shooting games to racing ones (his weakness tbh)

signature celebratory dances when he wins! 

oh and the dance dance revolution battle! don’t EVEN GET ME STARTED

he’s nimble on his feet and amazing at DDR! he’ll even sing along dramatically to all the pop songs that he knows

he loves the satisfaction of winning a game, but if you get discouraged, he’ll notice and encourage you or focus more on team games! might even let you win a game or two since he’s just head over heels for you...

ceo of claw machines. when you try to get a plushie from those impossible claw machines, he'll watch you try first

but when you don’t get it, he’ll ask you to try again. instead of just taking over, he’ll stand behind you, put his hand on yours, and gently guide you so that you can successfully pick up the plushie

whatever plushie you want, it’s yours! he’s got you

he’s also got you on drinks and snacks. you’ll sit down and have a moment together with popcorn and chips before you get back into it

there’s wasn’t that much skinship throughout the date, but now the tension is building up fr! and don’t worry, he’s planning to act on it

towards the end of the date, the two of you enter the photobooth

and the two of you are in there for multiple rounds, tons of silly poses

with you this close to him, he’s finally starting to feel the nerves 🦋🦋

as you’re waiting for another set of photos to print out, the two of you have reached the peak of the tension. as you lean towards him, he puts his hand on your waist and goes for it 

your kiss is so exciting and sweet! and he smells so so fresh

you make out in the photobooth until two kids catch you

semi:

let me just say beforehand how sweet and significant this date is. it’s the first time he really opens up to you 

you meet up for an evening mini-concert date at his favorite cafe

he’s there 15 minutes early. despite being offered a table inside, he waits outside because he’s scared you’ll get lost 🥺

he’s dressed somewhat casually with an edge. while his outfit looks effortless, it was NOT—he freaked out an hour before and facetimed tendou about what to wear

tries so hard to not look nervous, but his heart is racing! probably more nervous than he is for his games tbh he’s got his earbuds in, foot tapping nonstop, shoulders crossed

when he sees you, he relaxes. you just have that effect

takes you inside and tells you why he likes this cafe so much because he hopes that you will love it, too

king of respectfully checking you out. sneaks small glances at you when you’re not looking. you always catch him smiling but don’t know why

pays for your drink and orders what your drink despite having a go-to drink. the waiter is visibly surprised that he’s breaking routine

you talk over coffee and have such an easygoing time. he’s actually surprisingly talkative and u learn a lot about him outside of volleyball

also a good listener, thinks it’s cute when you get excited while talking

teases you a lot, too

an hour in, a local band that he likes comes in to perform. he can’t contain his excitement

pulls his chair closer to yours. as the music starts playing, he grabs your hand. you lean onto his shoulder

nods to the music, but when they play a love song, he turns to you and sings the lyrics quietly to you

he holds your hand as the two of you walk out into the streets

you walk around the shops for a little bit

as you’re about to leave him, you peck him on the cheek. before you can go, he leans into you and the two of you kiss

it’s a beautiful, slow, yet deep kiss

after you leave, he calls you and stays on the phone with you on your commute home to make sure you get home safely

🔮 ADAPTATION 🔮

Sarah Paulson is my top choice, yet this film isn’t her best. I trusted that months for this will come out and I’m left asking why I was so energized. The trailer parted with everything. You knew the entire story before it even began. There was practically zero character improvement and everything just felt like it was 0–100 with no pacing at all. Likewise, the cosmetics office for Sarah’s last look-the hellfire would you say you were folks on when you thought of this? I really snickered when I saw her. It was an alright film. One that you’d be pissed on the off chance that you burned through cash on. Nothing new, normal, worn out acting. Additionally, no one realizes the proper behavior an asthma assault. This film had so many plot openings that it seemed like a parody. The mother can simply take an infant from the clinic? She harms her little girl for quite a long time and no specialist actually sees this during her regular visits? How did she manage the postal carrier’s vehicle? Amy Dunne is one of my all-time favorite characters in cinema. She is effortlessly terrifying in a tragically beautiful sense. An overwhelming force of nature, focused on a singular purpose; The Utter destruction of the man who betrayed her. Until she changes her mind. Gone Girl was an amazing, amazing, film and the backbone of it’s Amazing Amy is the absolutely villain performance by Rosamund Pike. This chick is incredible at her job but this role really made me pay attention to her craft and, to this day, i believe she was robbed of her Oscar for that role. Look, i love Julianne Moore but f*ck all of that. Pike was robbed. Now, lately, there’s been buzz of another, Amy Dunne, level performance from Rose in this Netflix flick, I Care A Lot. Obviously, i had to see for my self if this sh*t stand’s up to the hype.

The Great

This film feels a lot like Promising Young Woman. I love that kind of energy. Everything is so kinetic, so organic. It’s weird to describe but there is an undercurrent of raw, near-visceral, force about this flick. It’s that flirty intensity that grips you and keeps you invested from scene to scene.

This film is beautifully. The way it’s shot is so pleasing to the eye. It’s borderline Wes Anderson-esuqe with all of the color and symmetry but still it’s own thing. Like, the shot composition is all very meticulous and i kind of love it. Absolutely outstanding scene composition. Brilliantly complimentary music. impeccable shot choice. Jonathan Blakeson directed his ass off. He put together one hell of a technical masterpiece.

Dude also wrote one hell of a film. That’s right, Blakeson pulls double duty on this thing by being both director and writer. No way to f*ck up the vision if you have complete control over it like that. Cats sh*t on the auteur director but, it’s like, why? How? Films are art and the director, the creator, is the artist. Of course they should be able to bring their vision to life. It’s dope seeing Blakeson finally getting the shine he deserves. Dude is the writer/director of The Disappearance of Alice Creed, another excellent film that went under the radar. That was the flick which turned me on to Gemma Arterton and I’ll thank him for that fr the rest of my life

Seriously, this f*cking music kills. It’s kind of an aggressive, New Wave, Eighties Synthfunk, tenor to it and i f*cking love all of it. I’m a sucker for that sound, always have been, and can’t get enough of it’s current revival. Bless the kids and their Retrowave movement and bless Marc Canham for adding it to this film. Like, this is some Tangerine Dream/The Keep levels of dope.

This cast is very small, very tight, so there’s no room for your performance to hide. Everyone is excellent in their respective roles, even the smaller parts. Dianne Wiest as  Jennifer Peterson, the catalyst for this film’s conflict. Nicholas Logan as Alexi Ignatyev, a cowardly good and taxi driver for the film’s antagonist who I'll get to in a second. Damian Young as a crooked doc and silent accomplice to ALL of Marla’s shenanigans. Chris Messina, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Macon Blair, and Alicia Witt; All in smaller roles but still powerful and relevant to this plot. There is no dead-weight in these performances at all. That said, the three principals are absolutely amazing.

Of tops, this is a f*cking clinic put on by Rosamund Pike. Her Marla Grayson is every bit the straight up, stone cold killer, that her Amy Dunne was. I cannot stress that enough. Pike has a way of exuding this quiet malice in these types of roles and it rings through in this particular performance something fierce. Marla is the WORST kind of person and Rosamund just f*cking effortlessly, nonchalantly, b ring that cold, cruel, energy to life. Marla isn’t Amy but she’s kind of a saccharine sweet, pastel pastiche, version of her and if Pike doesn’t get a proper Oscar for this performance, this go around, there is absolutely no justice in the world.

Eiza Gonzalez is getting dumb work lately and I'm here for all of that. She’s been gaining momentum in Hollywoodland since her scene stealing turn as Darling in Baby Driver. She’s found her way into Alita: Battle Angel, Hobbs and Shaw, and just recently, Godzilla vs. Kong. Her role as Fran in this film, is definitely a departure from those other roles, and it allows Eiza to really show her skills. This is the best i have ever seen Gonzalez and it makes me yearn for more of her, in tighter roles, like this one. 

Peter Dinklage is always excellent in anything he decides to attempt, outside of Destiny, so, obviously, his Roman Lunyov was spot on. I bought into his weirdly uber-gangster persona without pause. No need to suspend my disbelief, it just felt real. Dude sells this character without even trying. That level of ability is rare, especially taking into account his versatility overall. It’s been a while since I've seen Peter in something as good as this and I'm glad he as able to shake that disgusting Thrones finale aftertaste. It’s great to see him back in his fine form.

The level of diversity in this is very interesting. Female lead, in a lesbian relationship with a Latina women, whose principal antagonist is a dwarf? Black Judge, Female doctor, and an elderly plot catalyst. That’s all the identity boxes checked. Knowing what i know about Hollywood, you have to check those boxes in order for studios to even look at your script nowadays. OscarsSoWhite really f*cked up those egocentric, performative liberals, in the movies. The thing is, though, while this movie definitely exudes “GHURRRL POWER”, a lot like the previously referenced Promising Young Woman, it doesn’t thump you over the head with it. This sh*t is nuanced, organic, and never intrusive. This is how yow represent. This is how you instill identity politics into your films without being so goddamn hostile about it.

The Verdict

This movie is f*cking amazing, man. It’s so well written, it needs to be, because these performances are the best I've seen all year. So far. Seriously, these characters are all the worst but, at the same time, so goddamn real. They feel legitimate, so much so, i forgot i was watching a film. I was that deep into this narrative, it’s really that immersive. Rosamund Pike comes through and just destroys this screenplay, embodying Marla, while Eiza Gonzales and Peter Dinklage deliver just a strong supporting duties. Jonathan Blakeson really put together one hell of a film and considering he wrote the damn thing, too, a lot of the credit has to go to him for that. I mean, aside from the laughably strong performances, this flick is gorgeous, has brilliant dialogue, an organic score, and some of the best cinematography I've seen all year. I Care A Lot definitely lives up to all this hype and then some. If you have Netlfix, this thing is worth the watch. If you don’t definitely fly that Jolly Roger for this one. I can’t sing it’s praises enough.
