YOUR ULTIMATE CHECKLIST FOR LONG DISTANCE MOVING ACROSS CANADA
Introduction: Embrace Your Moving Adventure!
We've all been there — staring down the complex and often chaotic process of moving. Whether it's within same town or across the country, the challenge can seem daunting. But worry not! With a solid plan and the right long-distance moving company, your transition can be as smooth as a scenic drive. Let's dive into the essentials that make moving a breeze, not a burden.
Tumblr media
Understanding Long-Distance Moving
What to Expect from Your Moving Journey
Long-distance moving isn't just about relocating your possessions; it's about moving your whole life. The first step is understanding what this big move entails:
Pre-move Surveys and Estimates: Get a clear idea of costs and timelines.
One of our professional moving consultants will meet with you to go over any concerns you may have and to explain how our Quality Assurance Certificate protects you.
They will prepare an in-home estimate by doing an item-by-item survey of your belongings to create a pricing estimate and custom moving plan for you.
The consultant will present you with the estimate and answer any concerns or questions you may have about it. At Sparta Movers, we want to make sure you can make an informed decision when choosing your moving company.
You will also receive a transit time guide that includes the estimated pick-up and delivery date for your belongings.
Packing Strategies: Whether you pack yourself or hire professionals, knowing the best practices is key.
Our trained professionals packing crews at Sparta Movers will ensure that all your items are adequately packed in order to arrive at your new home safely.
If you decide to self pack your boxes, give yourself plenty of time. We have plenty of packing tips for you if you don’t know where to start to help you use your time efficiently.
Sparta Movers offer durable packing materials at competitive and reasonable cost.
Moving Day Dynamics: From loading to logistics, be prepared for the big day.
Sparta Movers’ professional moving crew will load your belongings safely and carefully onto the moving truck.
They know how to pivot, maneuver, wrap, drape and protect every item, as well as your walls, floors, stairs, handrails and doorways. Floors will be protected with neoprene floor runners to avoid marks or dents, and your furniture with quilted moving pads to prevent damage. If you have any light-coloured furniture, it will be wrapped in clear plastic first to prevent any marks or stains.
Transit Tips: How your belongings will be transported matters.
Your moving truck will be weighed at a government-inspected weigh station before and after loading your belonging onto the truck to guarantee an accurate weight of your goods. This weight will be used to calculate your final shipment charges.
At Sparta Movers, we guarantee that, as long as items were not added to your shipment after we did the in-home survey, the estimated weight your professional moving consultant gave you won’t exceed 10%.
Your belongings will be protected in a specially equipped soft-air-ride Sparta Movers truck throughout the long-distance move.
Your moving consultant will make sure that all necessary paperwork is ready to go if you will be crossing the border to/from the USA.
Sparta Movers also offers two levels of transit protection plans:
Replacement Value Protection: your shipment valuation will be based on $10 per LB weight of your shipment actual weight.
Basic Released Value Protection: valued at $0.60 per pound.
Delivery and Unpacking: Settling into your new home with ease.
Our professional van operator will contact you at least 24 hours prior to delivery.
Upon arrival at your destination, our movers will place your furniture and your packed boxes with extreme care in your designated rooms (kitchen, bedrooms, basement, garage, storage, etc). Our movers will also reassemble furniture (beds, tables, etc), which they took apart at the time of pick up at Origin location.
If our moving crew packed any boxes for you, they will also unpack them and remove pack materials and debris before they leave.
Choosing the Right Moving Company
Selecting a dependable moving company is crucial. Look for:
Professional accreditation and positive reviews.
Transparent pricing and clear communication.
Comprehensive services from packing to unpacking.
Pre-Move Preparations: Getting a Head Start
Inventory and Decluttering
Start by sorting through your belongings. An effective decluttering process can significantly ease your moving load:
Sell, Donate, or Dispose: Lighten your load and reduce moving costs.
Check out this great article we wrote on Pre-Move Preparation.
Inventory Everything: Keep track of what’s coming with you and what’s staying behind.
Packing Smartly
Packing can be an art form when done right:
Use Quality Materials: Invest in sturdy boxes and protective wrapping.
Label Everything: Clearly mark boxes by room and contents for easy unpacking.
Things You Should Not Pack For Your Long Distance Move
There are items that you cannot or should not take with you when moving long-distance across Canada. Below is a comprehensive checklist of items that moving companies will ask you to exclude:
Hazardous materials: Moving companies are not licensed to carry dangerous goods on the moving trucks as there is a potential for them to explode and cause damage to your shipment and others around. These include dangerous and/or flammable items such as:
lighter fluid
paint
oily rags
matches
charcoal
pool chemicals
bleach
oven cleaner
ammunition
Perishable items: moving trucks are not equipped with refrigeration units, so perishable foods will spoil quickly and risk causing damage due to mould, fungus and condensation. Plus, spoiled food leaves a very unpleasant odour. Plan to use up or give away the following items before moving:
meats
produce
dairy products
frozen foods
any opened containers
Plants: plants do not travel well, especially long distances when they will be exposed to extreme temperature swings, lack of UV light and oxygen, resulting in their quick decay. If you are bringing your plants, plan to have them with you in a personal vehicle and not on the moving truck. You’ll be able to tend to them better.
Here is an interesting article we wrote on Packing Indoor Plants.
The Moving Week: Countdown to Departure
Last-Minute Checks and Balances
As the moving day approaches, ensure everything is in order:
Confirm Details with Movers: Double-check arrangements and timings.
Prepare Essentials Kit: Pack a bag with necessities for the first few days post-move.
Taking Care of Logistics
Service Disconnections: Schedule the disconnection of utilities in your current home.
Address Updates: Notify banks, government agencies, and subscription services of your new address.
Moving Day: A Symphony of Efficiency
The Big Day Arrives
It's all hands on deck when moving day comes:
Early Start: Get an early jump on the day to maximize daylight hours.
Supervise the Load-in: Ensure items are handled carefully and loaded correctly.
Be helpful and NOT on the way. Ensure everything at your home is organized and accessible. Let movers know what items require special handling and separate items that are moving from those that are not, to avoid moving unwanted items.
Stay with the crew till the end. Do not leave early, not until crew loaded and left.
Smooth Sailing through Transit
Stay in Touch with Movers: Keep communications open for updates during the journey.
Prepare for Arrival: Know the estimated delivery schedule to plan your first day in the new home.
Check Inventory. At the destination, review your inventory to ensure all items were delivered and nothing is missing. Inspect your belongings while those are unloaded from the moving truck into your new home.
Settling In: Unpack and Unwind
Unpacking Strategies
Efficient unpacking can transform a house into a home overnight:
Prioritize Rooms: Start with the essentials like the bedroom and kitchen.
Organize as You Unpack: Place items thoughtfully to avoid reorganizing later.
Post-Move Reflections: Ensuring Satisfaction
Final Checks and Adjustments
Inspect Delivered Items: Check for damages or missing items.
Provide Feedback: Share your experience with the moving company to help them improve.
The Art of Long-Distance Moving
Moving long-distance is more than a physical move — it's a transition in life. Embrace the journey with excitement and preparation, and you'll find the process not just manageable, but enjoyable.
Conclusion: Your New Chapter Awaits
Congratulations! You've navigated the complexities of a long-distance move. Now, take a moment to enjoy the new surroundings as your new chapter begins. Remember, a smooth move is a launchpad for your new adventures.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What should I look for in a long-distance moving company?
Look for reliability, services offered, and transparent pricing.
How early should I start preparing for my move?
Ideally, start preparing 8-12 weeks before your moving date.
What are the essentials I should keep with me during the move?
Keep personal documents, valuables, and a few days' worth of clothes and personal items.
How do I ensure my belongings are safe during the move?
Choose a moving company with good reviews for safety and reliability, and consider getting additional cargo protection coverage.

CALGARY MOVERS TIPPING GUIDE: HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU REWARD?
Tipping the Unsung Heroes: Your Calgary Movers
We've all been there, haven't we? Boxes piled up, the excitement of a new home, and the simultaneous dread of the actual move. Moving is one of life's top stressors, right up there with weddings and job interviews. But what happens after the last box is unpacked? The real heroes of our tale - the movers - have played their part, and now there's that awkward dance: to tip or not to tip?
Tumblr media
Why Tip Your Movers in Calgary?
The thing about tipping is, it's like giving someone a pat on the back. An acknowledgment of the blood, sweat, and occasional tears they've invested in your move.
Lisa Orr, an etiquette authority based in Toronto, asserts that tipping is customary in places where one avails of enhanced services. However, she points out that one wouldn't typically gratify professionals like doctors, accountants, or dentists, highlighting the distinction between personal and specialized services.
Tumblr media
Recognizing the Extra Mile
We've all had experiences where service was so above and beyond that it made our day, right? And we've had those experiences where, well, it was just okay. Tipping becomes that barometer of our satisfaction.
• Above and beyond: Did they handle that fragile box marked "Grandma's china" like it was their own?
• On-time efficiency: Were they punctual, ensuring no added stress to your moving day?
• Professionalism: Was there a respect and courtesy that made the move smoother?
Acknowledging the Challenges
Moving isn't a walk in the park. Picture this: a giant piano, a 10th-floor apartment, and—oh, the horror—no elevator! Some moves are like climbing Mount Everest, and tipping becomes our way of saying, "Hey, I see you. And I appreciate that Herculean effort."
How Much Should You Part With?
There's no one-size-fits-all answer, but we've got some guiding principles to help you out.
The Standard Guidelines
• 10%-20% of the move cost: It's the commonly accepted range. Like at a restaurant, think of it as a reflection of your satisfaction.
• Tipping each mover individually: Consider their unique contributions. Was one particularly attentive or did another have a sense of humor that lightened the mood?
Tumblr media
Other Ways to Show Appreciation
Money is great, but let's get creative!
• Refreshments: Imagine offering a cold drink on a scorching day or a hot coffee when the wind chills. Simple, but speaks volumes.
• Positive Reviews: Words can be as valuable as dollars. If they nailed it, shout it from the (digital) rooftops!
Some General Percentages to Consider
For the Basics
If the move was standard, no frills, and you're satisfied: 10%.
For the Superstars
Were you blown away? Did they make moving seem like a breeze? 20% is your number.
For the Mount Everest Moves
For those particularly grueling moves where you wouldn't blame them for wanting to throw in the towel: More than 20%.
When Things Go South
Poor service? Unprofessional behavior? Remember, tipping is a choice. And sometimes, the most powerful statement is withholding it.
Wrapping It Up
Movers are the unsung heroes of our moving saga. They lift, they haul, and they help turn our new house into a home. Tipping becomes our little token of gratitude. Remember, it's not about the money; it's about the message.
FAQs
1. Is tipping movers customary in Calgary? Yes, while not obligatory, it's a kind gesture acknowledging their hard work.
2. What if I can't afford to tip 10-20%? Offering refreshments or writing a glowing review can be an alternate way to show appreciation.
3. Do I tip based on the difficulty of the move or the service quality? Both! Consider the challenges of the move and your satisfaction with the service.
4. Should I tip each mover individually? Yes, recognizing each mover’s unique contributions is a thoughtful gesture.
5. What if I'm not satisfied with the service? You’re not obligated to tip. Consider giving feedback so they can improve.

30 September 2023 - back in Calgary indefinitely! 🙂☹️
The last two weeks were jam packed with work, pre-packing / organizing, last get togethers with friends, and many goodbye hugs. After the movers came on Monday, we stayed in The Hague for the rest of the week and it was actually really nice to be back in the city and re-wander around all the familiar streets from my first 3.5 years in NL.
Rob's parents came to visit for 5 days and his mom was an absolute star helping us get organized for the move along with a lot of the cleaning afterwards 🌟. It was lovely time as a family as well as visits with Oma and also Bep, our old neighbour. Both women are in their 90s and still living alone and biking frequently - it's so inspiring to see and although my sample size is super small, I do think there must be something about the Dutch lifestyle they're doing right!
I also got to show Rob around the office, and utilize the game room in C30 for the first time where we played competitive table tennis and pool (one much less competitive than the other due to my poor skills...).
By Friday we finally felt 'ready' to leave, and although it feels bittersweet to close a chapter, there's also excitement for what's ahead. Of course I'll miss colleagues and friends, jog club and church and running routes and cycle lanes, but there really isn't one 'best place' to live so we'll see how it goes back in Calgary! We landed to chilly 6 degree weather and rain, but it supposed to warm up soon so will only get better from here 🤓.

Building personal relationships at work
I'm back again! I haven't shared the blog link yet as I wanted to see if I would actually return to it, but think I'll make this a keeper 😊.
The once-a-week-a-blog hasn't panned out yet as things have been extremely hectic in the last month; finishing off work to leave it in good hands with my team, and sorting out movers, a storage unit and packing up my stuff.
Next week is the last week at work and I'm also making headways for my 1st June departure, so I feel I can start to slow down a bit and focus on saying goodbye to everyone I know here, from the last 14 years living in Toronto/Burlington and 11 years working at Canadian Tire.
The last month has been quite emotional as I have been sharing with my colleagues and other people I work with (like vendors and utilities) that I'm leaving. After having notified the official channels via my manager, I realized that there were a lot of personal relationships who I wanted to tell in person, as it would feel strange if they found out through others... so I started making the rounds, speaking to people over a phone call or videochat, sometimes a few a day! I've already had leaving drinks in the pub across the office and my manager arranged an amazing potluck lunch that we'll be having soon to celebrate my farewell.
The conversations I've had in these weeks have made me realize that I've built great personal relationships with many different people at work, sometimes through a single project we worked together on over 8 years ago, and in other cases over many years through weekly meetings. I believe that it is these personal connections that make people feel belonging to a company like Canadian Tire; ultimately, I don't do my best for "the boss" but really for my colleagues who I respect and don't want to disappoint. That connection can come from many different things, e.g. a shared interest in hiking, travel or gardening, but most often it's really about feeling like-minded with a similar view on life, irrespective of the personal circumstances (with/without children or pets, single/married, living in Calgary, Toronto or Montreal) ... the details don't really matter as long as the conversation is real and meaningful. Add to that the many events that were organized by Canadian Tire to mingle outside of strictly work, and it's a recipe for friendship!
There are so many fun times that come to mind, from the candy cart and bingo pizza lunches in support of Jumpstart, to a scavenger hunt downtown followed by cold drinks in the bar, to skating at Scotiabank Arena and a CTC ski day at Horsehoe Valley... below are pictures of some of my favourites 😍.
I feel very grateful for all the people I've connected with over the years and will cherish my memories forever. Although I am sad to say goodbye, that feeling comes from a good place and I'm hopeful we'll remain in touch - the world is a small place so you never know where we may bump into each other!

In this article, we will explore some of these affordable moving options so that you can relocate without breaking the bank.
Finding the Right Moving Company
Tumblr media
When it comes to moving, choosing the right moving company can make all the difference in terms of cost and quality of service. To ensure a budget-friendly move, consider the following factors when selecting a moving company in Calgary:
**Get Multiple Quotes**: Reach out to several moving companies in Calgary and request quotes for your move. This will allow you to compare prices and choose the most affordable option.
**Read Reviews**: Dive into online reviews and testimonials to gauge the reputation and reliability of the moving companies you are considering. Look for feedback on their pricing, customer service, and overall experience.
**Ask for Recommendations**: Seek recommendations from friends, family, or colleagues who have recently moved. Their firsthand experience can guide you in the right direction and help you find affordable and trustworthy movers.
Now that you have some tips on finding the perfect moving company, let’s explore a few budget-friendly options that cater to different needs and budgets!
The Budget-Friendly Moving Options
1. Quick and Hassle-Free: Sparta Movers
Looking for a fast and efficient move? Sparta Movers, one of the most affordable moving companies  Calgary, specializes in quick relocations without compromising on quality. With their team of experienced professionals, they provide timely and reliable service at budget-friendly rates. So, whether you’re moving within the city or relocating to a nearby town, Sparta Movers can handle your move swiftly and efficiently!
2. DIY Solution: Rent-a-Truck
If you’re on a tight budget and prefer a DIY approach, renting a moving truck might be the way to go. Companies like U-Haul offer cost-effective truck rental services in Calgary, allowing you to save money by handling the packing, loading, and unloading on your own. This option is ideal for those who have the time, energy, and a small to medium-sized move. Keep in mind that you will need to rent moving blankets (pads), dollies, tape, plastic stretch wrap and other packing supplies, also cargo straps for securing your goods on a truck.
3. Full-Service Experience: Sparta Movers
For a hassle-free and comprehensive moving experience, Sparta Movers is an excellent choice. While it may not be the cheapest option on the market, their affordable rates combined with their extensive range of services make them a popular choice among budget-conscious movers. From packing and loading to transportation and unpacking, Sparta Movers takes care of every aspect of your move, ensuring a stress-free relocation.
4. Budget-Friendly Packing: Pack It Yourself
Looking to save on packing costs? Consider packing your belongings yourself! Many moving companies in Calgary offer “pack it yourself” options that can significantly reduce your moving expenses. They can provide you with packing supplies and tips, allowing you to pack efficiently while keeping your budget intact.
Additional Strategies for an Affordable Move
In addition to the tips mentioned above, there are a few more strategies you can employ to make your move budget-friendly:
Ask friends and family for help:
– Instead of solely relying on professional movers, consider asking friends and family if they can lend a hand. This can significantly reduce moving costs, particularly if you’re comfortable with a DIY approach.
Utilize cost-saving resources:
– Take advantage of free or low-cost resources available in your community. Local online classifieds or social media groups often have listings for free moving boxes and packing materials. You can also explore renting moving equipment, such as dollies or blankets, instead of buying them.
Time your utilities transfer:
– Coordinate with your utility providers to ensure a smooth transfer of services. Avoid scheduling the start of your new utility services before you actually move in to avoid unnecessary additional expenses.
Compare insurance options:
– If you decide to purchase additional insurance coverage for your belongings, don’t forget to compare prices from different providers. Research reputable insurance companies and select the one offering the best rates for the coverage you need. Ask for cargo protection options from Calgary Moving Companies you are considering.
A Smooth and Affordable Moving Experience
No one wants to pay an arm and a leg for their move, and with the right approach, you don’t have to. By following the tips and strategies outlined in this article, you can make your move to Calgary affordable and stress-free. Remember to declutter before the move, plan ahead, and choose the right moving services for your needs.
Don’t forget to explore the one of the top affordable moving companies in Calgary such as Sparta Movers. This company offer competitive rates without compromising on quality. Obtain multiple quotes, ask about important details like additional costs and insurance coverage, and make an informed decision based on your requirements.
With proper planning, resourcefulness, and the assistance of trusted moving professionals, you can enjoy a smooth and cost-effective transition to your new home in Calgary. Embrace the excitement of this new chapter in your life and let affordable moving companies handle the logistics while you focus on settling into your new surroundings.
