You could still remember the first time you saw him walk in. You usually never noticed whoever walked throught the door, but for some reason as soon as the little doorbell rang indicating someone'd come in, you felt an electrifying need to see who it was. And it was him, of course, with his sufficient smirk and careless demeanor. Yet when he ordered his coffee he acted so nice and happy, not edgy and damp. From the very first moment you found him fascinating.

Then the next morning he came back, but unlike the day before he actually stayed to drink his coffee while scrolling on his phone and didn't even notice you were there. And so the days kept going by and you continued to see him at the coffee shop, still daydreaming about who this handsome stranger was and the things you could do together. You were already at peace with the idea of him being nothing but a proximity crush and never really knowing anything about him, not even his name. Until one day he just stopped going. One day passed, then three and before you knew it, it had been a week.

You had no idea why. It’s not like you were super sad, but you missed seeing him around. You thought your proximity crush would die with his absence, but much to your surprise it actually didn't affect the way you were starting to feel about this handsome stranger.

All of a sudden, one day he came back. What you didn't know is that he had come back from recording at another haunted location with Sam and the crew, where he had an epiphany. You even looked at the bar tender, but all the old lady had to do about it was giggle and shake her head, clearly amused.

You sighed and decided you'd take the table next to that one, so you were walking right past it. You were about to put all your stuff on said table but Colby's raspy voice prevented you from it.

"You don't need to sit there." You stopped on your tracks, not believing what you were hearing. You turned back to him.

"Sorry?" You acknowledging him made Colby feel way less confident, but he didn't show it.

"I'm not new here, I know you usually sit here. I was just wondering if you wouldn't mind... sharing a table with me?"

You looked around, confused. At this time of the day the shop wasn't very concurred with people so there was no need to share a table with a stranger. "So what we're doing is making an essay comparing the accuracy of The Song of Achilles with the actual Achilles legend thing, its really interesting because..." And he was actually listening! You felt your cheeks instantly redden. You were so sure this was going to be a one time thing, but you were so glad he was asking because you wanted this to happen again. And again. And again. You nodded.

"Of course." You offered him your phone so he'd type your number. After he was done you dialed his phone. "All done, have a good day." And you left. When you reached the door you looked back, and there he was, starting at you with that cute, satisfied smile of his. You waved and smile and he did so back. Then you left, and before you got to the bus stop you got a text message.

“Manager-nim? When do we start work tomorrow?” Kamal had a plan; let y/n get some rest. Even if he was going to be late to work the next day.

“11 am, why?”

“No reason~”

Reaching the dorms, Kamal made himself a quick snack before getting ready to head out again. He’d stay the night with y/n instead. They already had a wardrobe of his clothes already, there was no need to pack (no he hadn’t been leaving clothes there on purpose in case-). Avoiding questions thrown to him by the other members as he picked out another coat, the faux-blond mulled over which plushie he should bring with him, opting for a blue penguin the friends had collectively nicknamed ‘snowball’. Everything he needed ready in hand, Kamal left the dorm for the second time that day, his destination? Y/n’s apartment.

Buried in an avalanche of assignments and revision, y/n hadn’t even heard the knocking at their front door, until the doorbell started ringing. Bleary-eyed and exhausted, the student dragged themselves to answer the door, bracing themselves when Kamal engulfed them in a hug, a bag of snacks in one hand and snowball the penguin in the other.

“Kamal? I thought you were busy this week?” Confused but nonetheless inviting the taller male inside, y/n grabbed two cans of orangeade before joining their best friend on the couch, handing a can over.

“I start at 11 tomorrow, I have all the time in the world~” he grinned, arms extended to prove his point. Pleased when he elicited a twinge of a smile out of y/n, Kamal set the penguin plushie in y/n’s arms, grabbing the recently-bought snacks out of the bag and placing them on the table. “And you need to take a break. I say this with love; you look like a ghost y/n. Have you taken a break today?”

“No...?” With a meek smile, y/n played with snowball’s head. Getting up when Kamal excused himself to get blankets, save y/n’s work and shut the laptop, y/n sat back down when said male held his hand out. “I- Yeonjun’s rubbed off on you~”

“Good! Who else is going to take care of my workaholic friend? Hmm?” Kamal teased, grinning when y/n couldn’t do anything but answer with his name. Returning to the sofa and wrapping the pair of them in the blanket, the Korean-American let y/n have first pick of movie while he opened the snacks, already reaching to take a bite while a rom-com started playing on screen.

Yawning as their third movie of the night came to an end, Kamal tilted his head after finally clocking the weight on his arm. Turning his head, the 19-year-old was faced with a sleeping y/n using his arm as a pillow. Trying his hardest to contain his giggles, he adjusted, taking one of the cushions and putting it under his head while he let y/n sleep on his chest. Stirring awake, y/n was met by Kamal covering the pair of them with the blanket.

“Kamal...? Did the film finish?”

“Mhm~ get some sleep y/n; you deserve it. See you in the morning~”

Bechloe Week 2021 - Day 5

"You Don't Know Who I Am, Do You?

Beca's Assistant, Dani, rushed into the studio, causing Theo to glare at her.

"What?" Theo snarled, hating to be interrupted when he had an artist in the booth.

"Um, I need to speak with Beca," Dani said. "It's an emergency."

"Fine," Theo said, pushing the intercom button to get Beca's attention. "Dani needs to talk to you."

Beca furrowed her brow as she took off her headphones. She stepped out of the booth and walked over to Dani.

Theo watched as Dani animatedly waved her arms around while whispering something to Beca. Beca's eyes widened and she ran out of the studio.

"Beca!" Theo yelled out, jumping up as the door slammed closed behind Beca. He turned to Dani. "We weren't done. She'd better have a damned good reason for leaving."

Dani smiled at Theo as she excitedly blurted out, "Chloe's having the baby."

A smile came to Theo's face as he plopped back down in his chair. "I'd say that's a pretty damned good reason for her to leave."

~~ BeChloe Week 2021 - Day 5 ~~

Beca made it just in time to be in the delivery room when her daughter was born. She looked down in awe at the red-headed newborn laying in her wife's arms.

"She's beautiful, Chlo," Beca whispered. "Just like her mother."

Chloe looked up at Beca with tears in her eyes. Beca leaned down and kissed Chloe; she then kissed her daughter's forehead and pulled back, wiping tears from Chloe's cheeks.

"Welcome to the world Sarah Angelique Beale," Chloe whispered as she stared down at her daughter.

"I'd better go tell everyone she's here," Beca said. "I'm sure her namesakes are chomping at the bit to see her."

Beca leaned down and kissed Chloe. With a mumbled "I'll be right back," Beca left the room.

Chloe continued to stare down in awe at her new baby girl.

"Your mama went to get all your family members who have been waiting for you to get here," she whispered. "You don't know it yet, but you are already so loved."

Five minutes later, Beca popped her head in the door. "Ready for some company?"

"Bring them in," Chloe said, sitting a little straighter up in the bed.

Beca held the door as both her and Chloe's mothers and grandmothers entered the room. They all hurried over to the bed and looked down at Sarah.

"She's got the Beale's hair," Chloe's grandmother, Sarah, said.

"She's beautiful," Beca's grandmother, Angelique, said.

"Grandmas and great-grandmas," Beca said, taking Sarah from Chloe. "I'd like to introduce you all to the newest addition to the Beale family. This is Sarah Angelique Beale."

The two new great-grandmothers gasped.

"You named her after us?" Angelique asked.

"Well, yeah," Beca said. "You are two of the most important people in the world to me and Chloe."

"May I hold her?" Sarah asked.

"Of course," Beca said, handing baby Sarah over to Great-Grandmother Sarah.

~~ BeChloe Week 2021 - Day 5 ~~

Sarah was two months old, and Beca was preparing to leave on her world tour.

"I don't want to leave her," Beca told Chloe as she moved her packed suitcases over to the door. "Or you."

Chloe came up behind Beca and put her arms around Beca's waist. "We'll miss you."

Beca turned and put her arms around Chloe and kissed her.

"I'm going to miss so much in the next 6 months," Beca said. "I hope I can get home some time to see my girls."

"Your schedule is jam-packed," Chloe said. "I'd love to have you come home, but I know you've got a job to do. Besides, Brey has all the Bellas scheduled to be here to help out while you're gone."

"Of course Aubrey made a schedule," Beca said, chuckling.

"Plus, our mothers and grandmothers will be visiting," Chloe said. "So, don't worry, Sarah and I will be fine."

"But, it won't be the same as having her mama with her," Beca said, pouting. "I wish I could just cancel it all."

Tears came to Beca's eyes as she looked over to the bassinet where Sarah was sleeping.

"Babe," Chloe said, getting Beca to look at her. "This tour has been in the works since before we found out we were pregnant. You can't disappoint your fans by canceling at the last minute."

Beca sighed. "I know. But, it doesn't make me feel any better about leaving."

"We can FaceTime or Skype whenever you're scheduled allows," Chloe said. "And I'll make sure to take videos of anything new Sarah does. It will be like you were here the whole time."

"I don't want it to be like I was here," Beca mumbled. "I want to actually be here."

Chloe pulled Beca to her and kissed her. "Come on," she said. "Theo will be here any minute."

"I want to say goodbye to Sarah," Beca said, pulling away from Chloe.

Beca picked up Sarah and held her close to her chest. She kissed the top of Sarah's head and rocked her from side to side.

"I'll miss you, baby girl," Beca whispered. "Now listen closely while I give you some sage motherly advice about your Aunts. Don't believe anything your Aunt Amy tells you; she'll only get you into trouble. And I wouldn't be too upset if you puked on your Aunt Aubrey once or twice."

"Beca!" Chloe said, chuckling.

"I'm just saying," Beca said with a shrug. "Now leave me be, woman. I have about three minutes to give six months' worth of motherly advice to our daughter."

"Sorry," Chloe said, smiling and raising her hands in defeat. "Please continue."

"Okay, where was I?" Beca said. "Oh, you'll find that your Aunt Emily is more of a kid than you are. She's also tall, but don't let her scare you; she could be your best friend if you let her. Your Aunt CR is the coolest person I know. Mommy and I are cool, too, but your Aunt CR takes being cool to a whole new level. Your Aunt Stacie is a saint in devil's clothing. She has to be; she's married to your Aunt Aubrey."

"Brey," Chloe said.

"What?"

"She'll want to be called Aunt Brey."

Sarah started moving her arms like she was stretching, and Beca looked down at her. "Did you hear that, Sarah? Your Aunt Aubrey wants to be called Aunt Brey."

Just then, the doorbell rang throughout the house. Beca looked at Chloe.

"That's probably Theo," Chloe said, walking over to Beca. "I'll take Sarah, and we'll walk you out."

Beca kissed Sarah's forehead and handed her off to Chloe. Beca then grabbed her bags and followed Chloe downstairs.

There were more kisses and a few more tears as Beca said goodbye to Chloe and Sarah.

~~ BeChloe Week 2021 - Day 5 ~~

Chloe was feeling ecstatic because Beca was coming home in two days. Along with the excitement, she was also feeling sad because Beca had missed so many of Sarah's milestones during the six months she's been on tour. Chloe sent videos, but whenever they wanted to Skype or FaceTime, they couldn't make it work with Beca's schedule and the time differences.

Beca was smiling as she stared out at the scenery as the car drove her home from the airport. She was getting home earlier than she had told Chloe so she could surprise her girls.

Beca's smile grew bigger as she thought of Sarah. God, she missed her. She also missed sex. It's been long enough since Chloe gave birth so they can have welcome home sex, and Beca was looking forward to that.

"I wonder if Aubrey and Stacie would take Sarah for the night so Chloe and I can have some alone time," Beca thought.

Beca shook her head. "No. I want to spend as much time with Sarah as I can."

The driver pulled into the driveway of Beca's home. She thanked him and grabbed her luggage. She opened the door and set her suitcases down as she called out for Chloe.

"Chloe? Babe, I'm home," Beca called out.

"Beca!" Stacie cried out as she came out of the kitchen, carrying Sarah. "You're home early. Chloe said she wasn't expecting you until tomorrow."

"Got an earlier flight," Beca said, walking over to Stacie and reaching for Sarah. "There's my baby girl."

Sarah pulled away from Beca and clung to Stacie, shaking her head.

"Come on, Sarah," Stacie said. "Go to your mama. She missed you."

Beca reached for Sarah again, and Stacie leaned toward Beca; Sarah pulled away and shook her head again. Her eyes teared up, and her lower lip started to tremble.

Beca felt tears sting her eyes. "Oh, my God. You don't know who I am, do you?"

Sarah began to cry; her wails were like a knife to Beca's heart

"Where is Chloe?" Beca asked as a lone tear rolled down her cheek.

"Brey took her for a spa day," Stacie said, trying to comfort Sarah. "They should be back soon."

"Okay," Beca said. "I'm going to go upstairs and start unpacking. Can you keep an eye on Sarah for me?"

"Sure," Stacie said.

Stacie watched as Beca's shoulders dropped, and she slowly shuffled to the stairs. She gave Beca a small smile when Beca looked back at Sarah with a sad look in her eyes.

~~ BeChloe Week 2021 - Day 5 ~~

About thirty minutes later, Chloe and Aubrey came through the door. Chloe immediately went to pick up Sarah. Sarah leaned in for Chloe to take her, giggling and wiggling in Chloe's arms.

"Beca's home," Stacie said.

"She is?" Chloe asked with a huge smile on her face. "Where is she?"

"She, um, went upstairs to unpack," Stacie said.

"What's wrong?" Aubrey asked, sensing Stacie had something else to say.

"She's upset," Stacie said, taking a deep breath and telling Chloe what happened between Beca and Sarah.

Chloe frowned and handed Sarah to Aubrey.

"Watch her for me?" Chloe said. "I'm going to go talk to Beca."

"Take your time," Stacie said, moving to stand next to Aubrey. "We got Sarah. You go take care of Beca."

Chloe nodded and rushed upstairs. She slowly entered their bedroom only to find that Beca wasn't there. She frowned and looked across the hall to Sarah's room; the door was slightly open. She sighed and walked over, pushing the door open as she did.

Chloe's heart broke seeing Beca sitting in the rocking chair hugging Sarah's favorite stuffed elephant close to her chest.

"My daughter doesn't know me," Beca said, looking over at Chloe with tears rolling down her face.

"Oh, baby," Chloe said, rushing over to pull Beca up and into her arms.

Beca let out a small sob, and Chloe felt tears stinging her own eyes.

"I love you," Chloe whispered. "And so does Sarah."

Beca scoffed as she pulled away from Chloe. Beca hugged the elephant to her chest and sat back down in the rocking chair.

"I've missed so much because of the stupid tour," Beca mumbled. "I counted down the days until I could come home and see and cuddle Sarah. And she doesn't even know who I am."

Beca let out another sob and started to gently rock back and forth.

Chloe knelt by the chair and put her hands on Beca's arm.

"You just have to give her a little time," Chloe said. "She's a little shy with people she doesn't know. You just have to let her get to know you again."

Chloe raised herself up onto her knees and kissed Beca's temple. She then rested her forehead on the top of Beca's head while wrapping her arms around Beca.

Chloe comforted Beca and Beca let herself be comforted. They were so engrossed in each other they didn't hear when Stacie and Aubrey entered the room.

"Mama."

Beca and Chloe's heads shot up; they looked over to the door to see Aubrey holding Sarah.

"Mama."

Beca let out a sob as she jumped up, nearly knocking Chloe over.

"Mama."

"Hey, baby girl," Beca said. "Mama's right here."

Sarah reached out her arms toward Beca, and Beca took her and pulled her to her. Sarah laid her head on Beca's shoulder.

"Mama."

Chloe wiped the tears from her eyes and put her arms around her wife and daughter.

"I love you, baby girl," Beca whispered, kissing the top of Sarah's head.

"We're sorry for intruding," Stacie said softly. "But when Sarah said mama and started looking around as if she was looking for Beca, we didn't think you'd mind."

"Thank you," Beca whispered as the tears ran down her cheeks.

"We'll call you later," Aubrey said as she and Stacie quietly left the little family.

Beca and Chloe stood in the middle of Sarah's room. Beca laid her cheek against the top of Sarah's head; Chloe laid her forehead against Beca's temple.

"I love you both so much," Beca said quietly.

"We love you so much, too," Chloe said.

"Mama," Sarah said, snuggling closer into Beca.

New Year’s Eve

for @thefanficfaerie‘s OTP Challenge (2020) Words: 984 Pairing: Steve Rogers x Reader Prompt: Winter Wonderland: Day 31- New Year’s Eve Summary: It’s New Year’s Eve and thanks to the craziness that was 2020, Reader and Steve almost miss it! Tony Stark, not one to pass on the biggest party night of the year, finds a way to bring the Avengers together without having everyone together. After a night of games and fun, Reader and Steve share a New Year's kiss, and Steve slips in a quality dad joke.

“Is it over yet?” You asked before sitting on the couch. You drew your legs up close and cradled a bowl of popcorn.

“No, the episode just started.” Steve said reaching for the remote. He was talking about the rerun episode of NCIS currently playing on TV. “I can change it.”

“I’m not talking about the show. I’m talking about the year.” You huffed before scooping up a handful of popcorn and tossing it into your mouth.

“We’ve still got a little way to go, Darling. We just had Christmas.” Steve laughed.

“If by a little way you mean five hours.” You handed your cellphone to him so he could see the date. Steve squinted at the screen, not quite believing what he was seeing.

“No kidding.” He exclaimed, putting your phone in the coffee table. “I didn’t have a good sense of time to begin with. Clearly our sheltering in place hasn’t helped that much. Should I switch to the ball drop?”

“TV coverage doesn’t usually start to get good until at least 9. Though I don’t think they’ll be much to cover this year.” You sighed. You continued to eat your popcorn and watched the show for a little while. You saw your phone light up and looked down to see a new notification. You swapped your popcorn bowl for the phone. “Tony’s invited us to his New Year’s Eve party.”

“He’s still having a party?” Steve frowned. “Is he insane?” Steve reached for his phone to start chastising his friend.

“It’s a virtual party, Honey.” You assured him, touching him on the elbow. You accepted the invite from Tony. A Video chat opened up. You positioned your phone so that you and Steve were visible to Tony whose face was taking up the entire frame.

“Hey Rogers, Future Mrs. Rogers! Glad you could join us.” Tony beamed as he greeted you both. “I’m gonna patch you in with the others.” You watched the screen fill with familiar faces as Sam, Bucky and Thor were added to your conversation. Clint had positioned a tablet in his living room so his whole family could be seen in frame. Tony stepped back and you could see Pepper, Nat, Rhodey and Bruce and everyone else who’d been sheltering in place at the compound mingling in the background. “Ok, now that everyone’s here.” Tony rubbed his hands together with excitement. FRIDAY release the troops.”

You heard your doorbell ring. You looked to Steve who only shrugged. Neither of you were expecting company and most of your friends were in the video chat. You passed your phone off to him and went to check the front door. You reached the door just in time to see one of Tony’s Iron legionnaires flying off. You picked the basket up and carried it inside, inspecting the contents as you went. There were two bottles of champagne, a pair of flutes, some party poppers, a two pairs of plastic 2021 glasses, it was everything you would need for a New Year’s Eve at home.

“Since we can’t all be together and we can’t all be in New York, I knew I had to find a way to bring everyone together.” Tony explained as you returned to the living room and placed the basket on the coffee table.

“It’s a good idea Tony.” Steve approved.

“Yeah well, all of my ideas are good ideas.” Tony shrugged. “Okay now everyone check your email because there’s something special in there.” Steve did as Tony instructed and checked his email. He showed you the file attachment, it was a 2020 Bingo card. “Everyone had their own card, Laura, [Y/N] there’s one for each of you too. First one to fill out their card and yell BINGO gets a hundred dollars.”

“That’s why you mailed those to us?” Bruce exclaimed in the background. You watched him frantically tapping on his phone. “I thought that was just like a meme or something. I deleted that thing…”

“What is the thing? What do I yell?” Thor shouted through his phone.

“BINGO! I’ve Got BINGO!” Laura Barton announced. She excitedly jumped up from the couch.

“Alright, $100 to the lovely Mrs. Barton.” Tony nodded. “So for our next game…”

For the next three hours, Tony kept everyone entertained. There were a few more games with cash prizes. You and Steve won a special version of the Newlywed game For the Avengers couples that was designed to see who knew each other best. There was Karaoke and a trivia contest full of questions about the year’s biggest events. It was almost enough of a distraction to make all of you forget the party was happening virtually.

At ten minutes to midnight Tony made sure everyone had their TVs set to the same channel. The group turned their attention to the final moments of the ball drop countdown. You held a champagne flute in one hand and Steve’s hand in the other. As you listened to your friends’ chatting and held hands with the love of your life, you realized that for all the bad things that 2020 brought with it, you had still been incredibly blessed.

There was a new year around the corner and with the support from your friends and the love you and Steve had for each other, there was no obstacle you could not face together. Steve gave your hand a gentle squeeze as the final count down began. You and Steve shouted along with your friends and the rest of the world.

“10...9…8…7…6…5…4…3…2…1! Happy New Year!” As the ball began to drop and the clock changed to midnight, you and Steve pressed your lips together.

“Happy New Year.” You pulled back long enough to mumble. You lips tickling his as you spoke.

“Happy New Year.” Steve whispered back. “I haven’t kissed you since last year.” He added before moving back in for another kiss.

From the first instance a human had a premonition that came true, it seems likely that the adventurous who were shocked and astounded wondered how those without the "gift" could duplicate this impossible experience. Then, when someone stared too intently into a reflective pool of liquid, a glowing ember, or even the night sky, and experienced an extrasensory perception, a technique and its medium are discovered to tap into a sixth sense. Practiced now for millennia, this procedure for obtaining occult information has become known as scrying. One interesting observation is that although there are general guidelines for preparing oneself and performing a scrying session, many mediums can facilitate the phenomenon. In the ultimate symbol of one Hollywood era ending and another beginning, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, home to James Bond and Rocky, finally found a buyer willing to pay retail: Amazon.

The e-commerce giant said on Wednesday that it would acquire the 97-year-old film and television studio for $8.45 billion — or about 40 percent more than other prospective buyers, including Apple and Comcast, thought MGM was worth. The studio, which had been shopped around for months, was once home to “more stars than the heavens,” as Louis B. Mayer liked to brag. But its vast production lot and pre-1986 film library were sold off decades ago. (Sony Pictures now occupies the lot, and Warner Bros. owns classic MGM films like “Singin’ in the Rain,” “The Wizard of Oz,” and “Gone With the Wind.”)

MGM does come with one Hollywood crown jewel: James Bond.

But even 007 has an asterisk. Amazon will own only 50 percent of the spy franchise. The balance is held by Barbara Broccoli and her brother, Michael G. Wilson. The siblings also have ironclad creative control, deciding when to make a new Bond film, who should play the title role and whether television spinoffs get made. (They have blocked such efforts in the past.)

The 25th installment in the Bond series, “No Time to Die,” is scheduled for pandemic-delayed release in theaters on Oct. 8, with Universal Pictures handling overseas distribution.

So why did Amazon pay such a startling premium?

For starters, it can. The company has $71 billion in cash and a market capitalization of $1.64 trillion.

But Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s founder and chief executive, is known as a conservative buyer. The purchase of Whole Foods for $13.4 billion in 2017 was the biggest acquisition in Amazon’s history. Its next-largest deals — until MGM — were for Zappos ($1.2 billion, 2009) and the smart doorbell company Ring ($1.2 billion, 2018).

The Whole Foods deal was a major strategic change for the company, pushing it into new markets of groceries and physical stores, which it had largely avoided. MGM is more about augmenting a current strategy: Amazon most likely paid more than others thought MGM was worth because of its all-important Prime membership program.

In addition to paying Amazon $119 a year or $13 a month for free shipping and other perks — notably access to the Prime Video streaming service — households with Prime memberships typically spend $3,000 a year on Amazon. That is more than twice what households without the membership spend, according to Morgan Stanley. About 200 million people pay for Prime memberships.

“More and more Prime members are using video more often, spending more hours on there, so I think this is a way to add more content and more talent around movies,” said Brian Yarbrough, a senior analyst at Edward Jones.

“This isn’t one studio buying another,” he added. “If you’re Amazon, the perspective is what’s the potential for Prime membership, what is the potential for advertising.”

In buying MGM, Amazon is bolstering Prime Video at a time when the biggest old-line studios are becoming less willing to license their libraries to outside streaming services; Warner Bros., Walt Disney Studios and Paramount Pictures must now supply corporate siblings like HBO Max, Disney+ and Paramount+.

That shift has made independent film libraries more valuable. In recent weeks, Sony Pictures licensed its old films and TV shows to Netflix and Disney in deals valued at more than $3 billion, a sharp increase from the expiring licensing agreements. Sony does not have a streaming service, unless you count the game-oriented PlayStation Network.

Although its library is diminished, MGM still owns 4,000 older movies, including pre-1986 films that come from two MGM divisions, United Artists and Orion. Those movies include “Rocky,” “RoboCop,” “The Pink Panther,” “Silence of the Lambs” and the James Bond catalog. (Fun fact: In true Hollywood fashion, MGM’s roaring lion mascot is lip-syncing; a cranky tiger sounded more ferocious.)

In addition, MGM has several movies in its pipeline that could be Oscar contenders, including “Respect,” an Aretha Franklin biopic starring Jennifer Hudson; Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci,” starring Lady Gaga and Adam Driver; and Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest project, which stars Bradley Cooper in his first film since “A Star is Born.”

Amazon’s appetite for movies became ravenous during the pandemic. It paid $125 million for the rights to “Coming 2 America,” $80 million for “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” and $200 million for “The Tomorrow War,” a Chris Pratt adventure that will arrive on Prime on July 2. Amazon also has Oscar ambitions, buying the rights to “Sound of Metal,” which was nominated for best picture and other top awards at the most recent ceremony.

When it comes to making its own hit films, Amazon has long struggled. MGM managers could help: Michael De Luca, MGM’s movie chairman, has a track record that includes, at various companies, the “Rush Hour,” “Austin Powers” and “Fifty Shades of Grey” franchises.

MGM also has a television studio that makes “Vikings,” “The Handmaid’s Tale” and various “Real Housewives” shows. In 2014, MGM acquired Mark Burnett’s production company, One Three Media, which holds rights to competition series like “The Voice,” “Survivor” and “Shark Tank.” Mr. Burnett, a contentious figure in Hollywood because he helped shape Donald J. Trump’s image with “The Apprentice” and remained close to him during his divisive presidential term, serves as MGM’s television chairman.

Anchorage Capital, a New York investment firm, has been the majority owner of MGM for more than a decade. Before that, MGM was tossed between owners and, bitten by falling DVD revenue, eventually ending up in bankruptcy. It was worth about $2 billion in 2010, according to analysts.

Kevin Ulrich, Anchorage’s chief executive and MGM’s chairman, formally put the studio on the block late last year. Anchorage has been under pressure from various stakeholders to exit the investment, with some agitators complaining that Mr. Ulrich was overly enamored with Hollywood and should have sold years ago.

The end of MGM as a stand-alone company adds to a vast reshaping of the media business as the big seek to compete by getting even bigger. Last week, AT&T announced a deal to spin off its WarnerMedia group and combine it with Discovery Inc., a move meant to strengthen WarnerMedia’s struggling HBO Max streaming service and a nascent streaming platform owned by Discovery. In a counterattack against the tech companies that have aggressively moved into Hollywood over the last decade, Disney paid $71.3 billion for the bulk of Rupert Murdoch’s entertainment assets in 2019.

Such megadeals have left smaller studios like MGM, Lionsgate and STX Entertainment looking for lifelines. (STX, known for comedies like “Hustlers” and “Bad Moms,” merged with the Bollywood studio Eros International last summer.)
