Below is my ranking of the episodes from the 2016 Amazon/BBC limited series, "THE COLLECTION". Created by Oliver Goldstick, the series starred Richard Coyle and Tom Riley:

RANKING OF "THE COLLECTION" (2016) EPISODES

1. (1.04) "The Launch" - Under pressure to create the Spring show, the Sabine family's fashion house, The Maison, is a hive of activity. But designer Claude Sabine is not creating and a seamstress-turned-model named Nina is focused on finding her illegitimate child. American journalist Stanley Rossi returns to question Paul Sabine's former boss and mentor, forcing Paul to punish those he loves.

2. (1.06) "The Weekend" - The inner circle of The Maison spend a weekend at investor Jules Trouvier's chateau. There, the Sabine family is rocked by untimely revelations, surprising alliances, relationships and a betrayal that may be damaged beyond repair.

3. (1.02) "The Dress" - The new business marriage with Trouvier is only hours into its honeymoon, when he and Paul clash over how to run the house. With millions at stake, Nina is thrust into the unlikely role of a couture model and events take a darker turn during a photo shoot.

4. (1.07) "The Betrayal" - Everyone at The Maison is somber following a staffer's road accident, and Helen's attempts to help using her family connections, only raises troubling wartime questions for Paul. Charlotte meanwhile begins her counter attack on the business and threatens to expose Claude as the true genius behind the Paul Sabine label.

5. (1.01) "The Deal" - Rising fashion designer Paul Sabine is offered the keys to a kingdom when he resurrects his family's fashion house. But he needs the help of his volatile brother, Claude, the true genius behind the label. 

6. (1.08) "The Offer" - In the final episode, Paul fights to maintain The Maison, while his mother Yvette Sabine tries to broker relations between her sons. Nina and American photographer Billy Novak must decide where their future lies.

7. (1.05) "The Afterglow" - Paul's glory is short-lived and instead of basking in the afterglow of a jubilant show, he is questioned about a dead body found buried on his family's farm. Meanwhile, Claude declares he is no longer happy to stay in the shadows.

8. (1.03) "The Scent" - Tormented by personal demons, Claude goes to dry out in the country. Meanwhile, secrets from the past war begin to spill out when a dead body is found on the Sabine family's farm and Paul becomes aware of an investigation into his former boss' past.

Shirley Lee porta la cannuccia del suo drink alle labbra dipinte di un rosso sfacciato con cui contrasta il pallore che da qualche tempo proprio non le si vuole levare di dosso. È vero che lo sconosciuto la sta guardando, ora che Beth glielo ha fatto notare non riesce più a ignorare la faccenda.

"Oh, suvvia... Non stai morendo, non farla drammatica."

"Lo hai sentito anche tu il dottore, Bethan: quattro, sei anni al massimo, se sono proprio fortunata."

"Chiederemo un seconda opinione, i dottori sbagliano di sbagliano di continuo."

"Questa era già la seconda opinione."

"Una terza allora!"

"Beth, per favore."

"Okay... Ma il tipo ti sta ancora fissando."

Ed è vero. Il tipo la fissa, e più viene fissata, più Shirley Lee si sente messa a nudo, vulnerabile, esposta, come se lo sconosciuto davvero sapesse. Così il mojito finisce sbattuto sul bancone del bar con un colpo secco a monito del caratteraccio della sua proprietaria.

"Ok, ne ho avuto abbastanza."

"Vai a chiedergli se vuole ballare?"

"Vado a chiedergli che cavolo di problema ha."

"Ehi tu. Si, tu. Che cavolo di problema hai? Guarda altrove."

Per un attimo, lo sconosciuto sembra troppo sconvolto per articolare una risposta.

"Pronto, ci sei? Ti ho detto di fissare altrove. Te l'hanno mai detto che è maleducazione fissare in questa maniera?"

"È piuttosto maleducato anche piombare ad inveire sugli sconosciuti."

"Non se gli sconosciuti stanno essendo maleducati per primi!"

"Mi stavo solo chiedendo se volessi ballare."

"Invece di chiederlo a te stesso, allora, potevi chiederlo a me."

"Vuoi ballare?"

"No!!"

"...Oh."

"..."

"..."

"....Aaaah, e va bene."

"...Sei anni, dieci mesi e quattordici giorni."

"Come scusa...?"

"È il tempo che ti lascerò prima di reclamarti per il mio Regno."

"...non ti seguo."

"Dovresti esserne onorata: non molti mortali hanno modo di conoscere in anticipo il giorno della loro morte."

"Non è divertente."

"Non cercavo di esserlo."

Shirley si rigira fra le coperte, cercando lo sguardo del perfetto sconosciuto che ha finito per affascinarla in poco più d'un paio d'ore, e quando lo incontra la sensazione sgradevole provata in quei primi istanti torna a stringerle lo stomaco.

"È ironico che tu faccia questa sceneggiata."

"Perchè?"

"...Perchè sei anni è più o meno l'aspettativa di vita che mi ha dato il mio oncologo."

"Sei anni, dieci mesi e quattordici giorni, per la precisione."

"Oh, finiscila."

Il lenzuolo scivola giù dal letto, avvolgendosi attorno ad un corpo ancora giovane ma già smagrito e non più florido, bianco nel bagnarsi della luce della luna che filtra dalla finestra.

"Una sentenza sulla testa non ti fa venire molta voglia di vivere quello che resta da vivere, sapendo che lo passerai soffrendo, entrando e uscendo dagli ospedali, tra un trattamento e l'altro come una cavia da laboratorio fino a quando il tuo corpo si arrenderà."

"Non deve necessariamente essere così."

"No? Ma in ogni caso che senso ha sforzarsi? Per cosa, poi? È una sconfitta in partenza."

"La morte non è una sconfitta."

"Non è una vittoria."

"La morte è solo un passaggio."

"..."

"Torna a letto, Shirley. Voglio farti un regalo."

"...Come fai a sapere il mio nome."

"Lo so e basta."

Nel tepore caldo dell'intimità consumata, Shirley Lee non sa dire dove termini il sogno ed inizi la veglia, dove le sensazioni sono magia e dove realtà. È buio, ma è un buio caldo e accogliente e sicuro, privo di minacce e pesi e sofferenza. È una promessa di pace, di una serenità che il suo spirito ribelle non ha mai conosciuto nemmeno nei suoi giorni migliori. Lo sconosciuto ha occhi accesi come il fuoco, ma freddi e color ghiaccio come se fosse un fuoco che non può bruciarla; quando l’uomo attraversa l’aria e scompare, varcando il confine invisibile tra la vita e la morte, a lei sembra normale.

La lascia lì, con un anello come una fede all’anulare, ma troppo grande, come non destinato alle sue dita. Nuda davanti allo specchio, le mani sul ventre, guarda il riflesso sullo specchio: tra le dita pulsa una luce turchese, che poi scompare, nella notte o nel sogno Shirley non lo sa.

Forse l’anello non era il dono di cui lo sconosciuto parlava.

Le onde si infrangono in uno sciabordare sereno sulle fiancate del piccolo yacht all’ancora ad alcune miglia dal porto di New York. È una sera di fine agosto nell’anno duemila e ventinove e il sole è basso nel cielo, pronto a tuffarsi dietro i palazzi della Grande Mela ad ovest, i profili dei grandi palazzi di vetro accesi dai raggi come decine di migliaia di lustrini scintillanti a decorare il tramonto.

Maximilian Lee è poggiato alla ringhiera di quello yacht, a guardare un po’ il mare color vino, un po’ l’orizzonte. Sopra la testa solo il cielo ed i gabbiani che già pregustano il banchetto in serbo anche per loro, accanto a se un giovane silenzioso coi capelli neri mossi dal vento e un bastone agganciato alla stessa balaustra a cui sono poggiato entrambi. Da qualche parte, la voce di Brendan e Micheal Scott che si scambiano le ultime raccomandazioni, le ultime preparazioni, gli ultimi auguri. Loro due invece tacciono, forse sprecando un po’ del poco, prezioso, tempo assieme. O forse no.

Una mano chiara dalle lunghe dita eleganti si poggia su una sua spalla. Iris bacia una guancia di Theus, e mentre loro figlio prima si irrigidisce, poi azzarda suo malgrado un sorriso, si rivolge invece a lui.

“È pronta.”

Lui sbuffa una risata.

“I’m not.”

E non lo è, quando vede Olympia nel suo splendido abito bianco, bella non come una principessa, ma come una figlia dell’Olimpo quale è, radiante della luce che solo le spose si portano dentro.

I’m dedicating every day to you, domestic life was never quite my style but when you smile... You knock me out, I come undone. And I thought I was so smart.

“...That little shit better treat you right.” Alla fine riesce a farsi uscire dalla bocca blaterando le parole con una specie di grugnito. Holly ride. Alle sue orecchie suona come il suono più bello del mondo.

“Theus lo fa sempre.”

“Stavo parlando di Micheal.”

Qualcosa trema. Che sia il proprio gomito o la mano di sua figlia, Maximilian non saprebbe dire, mentre la accompagna tra le file di sedie a prua della nave. Poche persone care, quelle che hanno bisogno di un altro giorno felice dopo tanta sofferenza come loro, quelle che bastano a dare a tre orfani il calore di una famiglia a stringerglisi attorno in una notte di fine estate, quando il più bello deve ancora cominciare.

Alla fine, non esita quando depone la mano di Olympia in quella di Micheal Ethan Scott. Bacia una guancia ad entrambi, poi rivolge un cenno a Brendan, un permesso implicito a officiare la cerimonia. Lui siede in prima fila, Prometheus accanto ad Iris, una mano di lei a stringere la propria, e a ricordarsi l’un l’altra che se ancora tutto non è risolto, il peggio è passato e ce l’hanno fatta.

Ha cercato un pizzico di Prometheus e Olympia quando ha guardato nel Multiverso, uno spicchio della loro vita, per ritrovarlo in realtà negli occhi dei due bambini che non saranno solo Figli degli Dei, ma anche Figli dello Spazio profondo. La promessa di ancora una risata da ragazzini nel letto con Iris, di mille notti sotto il cielo dello Stellarium e Theus addormentato tra le proprie braccia, di mille video di make-up con la mamma, di battaglie tra il bene e il male con Johnny e James e I Power Rangers: Power Shells, degli abbracci di Connor come se non fosse passato più di un minuto dall’ultimo saluto, di un altro caffè con Anja, un altro segreto condiviso negli occhi di Brendan, dei massaggi di Elettra, di tutto quello che Jayden il Principe dei Mari sta imparando, di un altro nuovo inizio per Mark, di un altro viaggio nell’occulto con Jane. Si è lasciato indietro un pezzo sul Treno del Multiverso, ma ha rubato via qualcosa, anche.

Il migliore dei mondi possibili, come è scritto sull’anello che indossa sopra la fede.

Qualcuno una volta ha detto che il sangue è più denso dell’acqua. Forse è più denso delle onde dello Stige. Forse anche dello scorrere delle Dimensioni.
