#BHATOT - EPL 19/20 - Post game thoughts.
I will own that I did want Dier to start after the past few games where we have leaked so many goals.  I thought having a more defensive minded midfield player might help shore up the defence.  To be clear, I have never thought he was going to single handedly make us win games, it was more that I thought our chances of loosing would decrease.  Some will disagree and use this game as proof.
I know I wasn't the only one expecting some changes to the line up, and there were definitely some interesting choices.  I did wonder a bit if it was a bid by Poch to say “well this is what you asked for”, but maybe that's unfair.  Yes, Sissoko was an unusual choice to be playing RB, but we knew that was likely from the presser earlier.  Dier playing was also somewhat expected, especially with the fans and pundits were demanding for him to be in the lineup.  But I thought the interesting choice was playing Ndombele, Eriksen, and Lamela together being that all three are creative, forwarded-minded midfielders (and yes to be clear I am saying Ndombele is more of a CM than a DM).  Being that the RB position was going to be a weakness from the start, that was a bit of a gamble to me.  But go big or go home, I suppose Poch knew he could always do what he did - sacrifice one of the three and move to a back three in defense.  To be fair, Spurs played best at the begging of the second half after that change was made.  But after the third goal in the 65th they did not seem to have enough mental steel to cope.
I know some are already blaming Dier, but honestly if you have two top strikers and three creative players on the pitch for 45 minutes, there is no excuse for only managing 2 shots, only 1 of which was on target. I am not defending Dier’s performance, but the logic of blaming the one guy who has only played one full match in about 6 months (against a team in a much lower league) is a bit fucked.
We can talk about the defence all night, but the attack has been disjointed.  I suspect it is mostly mental, Eriksen is a bit checked out, and everyone knows it; Ndombele is still learning his teammates, and vice versa. Dele has been injured on and off.  They don't seem to know where they are supposed to be, or perhaps it is more about them not knowing instinctively where each other are, and the runs of the strikers. And none of that absolves the defence, or Dier, or Hugo or Gazz, or even Poch, because there are levels to this magnitude of fuckery.
But for fucks sake, this isn't a situation that will be easily resolved by (or easily blamed on) one player.  And on some level I think the fans have been expecting this (an implosion of some kind) ever since Spurs stopped signing players 2 years ago.  It was great to get some new names this summer but the squad is still relatively unchanged for 2+ years and it shows.  Hopefully Poch will not leave, but they are going to need to grind out some wins to shore things up.  If they continue on this slide, we know how that usually ends, like it or not.

I really hope that Spurs get a win today.
I got Covid this week and have had waves of nausea everyday since Tuesday.
A win for the Clown Club might aid recovery, it's purely medicinal!! 😅
