Kaankhe-te gaagori koinya'r, /A water-pot at the daughter's waist

Pindawn neelaambori, /The blue fabric wrapped around her,

Ponthe te shawb chaaiya thaake, /Everyone stares back in the street,

[Moder] Shundawr koinya heri. /Seeing our beautiful daughter.

Awngero laaboni koinya, /The graceful beauty of the daughter,

Baaiya pore bhoome, /Spills drop by drop to the floor,

Keoa bone photaao she phul, /Someone help the forest flower bloom,

[Moder] Koinya'r o joibone. /Of our daughter's youth.

Kaajol meghe shaajlo haashi, /Seeing the black clouds, she smiles,

Bijuli'r o jhawla, /Like the lightning above her,

Aandhaar ghawre aainle koinya, /If you bring the daughter to a dark room,

[Moder] Aadhaar hawy ujaala. /Our darkness will be dispelled.

Deegola paanshire /The anticipating saussurea leaves in the lake,

Jemon nawya jawle bhaashe, /Like they float over the new water (after rain),

Shemoto koinya'ro joibon, /Like that the daughter's youth,

Lilua baataashe bhaashe. /Floats in the nostalgic wind.

(This song, for all intents and purposes has been wiped off the face of the internet as far as I can find, most probably after the Bulbbul controversy...they can take it off of YT, but they can't take it off of my memory and hopefully they can't take it off of tumblr).

She is not often counted by name among the many stalwarts of Mahabharata, but she lurks in the shadows, just beneath the surface.

If we are to trust Bhagavatam, where she is mentioned not by name, but just as that 'one special gopi who stole Krishna's heart', and if we were to realize the love that is documented in just a couple shlokas, we can probably understand why Vyasa did not push it in either Mahabharata or Harivamsha, where in both, Krishna is forced to move on, with bigger problems staring him down.

Vyasa rather gives him an empty room, and the privacy in which to grieve his love, instead of documenting his pain in all its intensity within the rather unsympathetic lens of the vamshalatikas that these documents ultimately were meant to be.

Her name is already recorded in Gahasattasai as early as 2nd century BCE, but her characterization continues to evolve well up until 13-14th century CE (full timeline).

She is general noted to be the daughter of Brishabhanu of Varshana, married to Aayana Ghosha of Vrindavan. Older than Krishna, married at a young age, still headstrong, short-tempered, argumentative, often immature, Radha is a tight slap in the face of the society that was trying to build an image of the perfect, silent, obedient wife, the a-sooryam-pashya, who wouldn't even be touched by sunlight.

A wild spirit at heart, she is the driving force behind her and Krishna's tumultuous relationship. Her personality, in art and poetry, does often overpower Krishna's, bringing to him to- 'dehi pada-pallavam-udaaram'. She keeps Krishna (and herself too) only at the extreme heights and depths of emotional wringing.

She has well and truly earned her place in our collective history though her textual evidence (and the consistency of her stories) is often dubious, where her name itself is an act of protest, where she is the muse of innumerable artists to this day, where even the most conservative of people will not only accept her, but they will worship her, with her chosen consort!

Titip Doa

Dari beberapa pekan kemarin mbatin, "Ya Allah, siapa ya yang lagi umroh? Mau titip doa ya Allah."

"Di setiap ada masalah, bawaannya pingin umroh aja ya Allah. Pingin berdoa banyak-banyak di sana." tambahku lagi.

Ku pikir doa random itu hanya sekadar doa, tapi Allah selalu maha baik. Selalu mendengarkan doa-doa hambanya.

Singkat cerita tadi sore, temanku menelepon. Tak seperti biasanya, video call. Anak ini selalu random kehadirannya, seperti anak ajaib yang selalu muncul saat aku ada masalah dan membutuhkan bantuan. Aku tak mengangat telpon karena sudah menjelang maghrib.

"Alhamdulillah, I feel better today. Kamu ada hal lucu yang bisa dibagi ndak? I need mood booster," ku tuliskan dalam sebuah pesan singkat.

She responds quickly to my messages. And bhoom!

"Aku hari ini ke Mekkah mau umroh," jawabnya singkat membuat mataku terbelalak.

Dalam hatiku, "Serius nih? MasyaAllah. Tabarakallah. Ini bukan jawaban lucu, tapi membuatku terkagum-kagum karena kuasa Allah."

Lalu, aku menyempatkan video call. Tak ketinggalan, aku menuliskan doa yang cukup panjang. Sungguh aku sangat berterima kasih kepada Allah. Orang yang pernah ku doakan di 11 Ramadan 1443 H di pelataran Madinah dulu, kini akan kembali umroh untuk ke-3 kalinya via Jerman.
