good morning evening and night folks i have been pondering THIS for 12 hours straight and after writing what. appears to be a beautiful essay in my words doc i’ve just decided to throw all my thoughts at the wall instead. love that essay but it is becoming so very well-written academic work and i am so deeply unserious online.

anyways. on the subject of odysseus and diomedes and their shared boar vibes. the thing i kept coming back to was how boars were fucking TERRIFYING in ancient greece. to the point where the calydonian boar hunt (essentially just 30 dudes rocking up to kill a divine pig*) is a whole Event its a whole Heroic Tale. because you think 30 dudes can get that boar without a scratch WRONG two guys die and peleus stabs some other dude in the confusion. boars are ruthless and frankly overpowered as fuck little bastards in ancient greece and of the four i can think of with names at least TWO of them had divine origins somehow (calydonian and crommyonian).

and honestly? ruthless, terrifying as fuck, difficult for a horde of men to stop let alone some guy? got some nebulous relationship to the gods that give you strength? holy shit thats tydeus right there babey. he kills like 49 guys and sends the other one home as a warning. he literally gets married off of Boar Vibes dude. its his whole personality.

and so obviously diomedes, whose entire job for ten years is Bring Honor To Dead Father, is like well shit! time to adopt the whole boar vibe! i mean he’s literally compared to a boar in book V with unending strength truly he is the boar guy junior. he fights hordes of thebans/calydonians/trojans without resting, he cuts down hundreds of men without mercy, he gets athenas favor and despite how well he plays the part he is so tired. he’s ruthless, but does he want to be? he’s skilled in battle, but has he known anything else? he’s favored by the gods, but did he ever have a choice in that?

meanwhile odysseus. odysseus who is scarred by the boar he hunted as a child on his thigh. escaped what is otherwise certain death. marked so deeply by an animal so connected to divine rage that it transcends even athena’s disguise. it is this scar, that proved him equal in combat to that boar, that identifies him to his friends and family. that helps him retake his house and throne. just. the scar itself cements odysseus’ mortality but it also transcends any attempt at concealing who he is.

anyways putting all these thoughts together. i think that for diomedes the boar symbolism is something that doesn’t quite fit. its something that stretches and aches, like an old shirt thats too tight, because its not indicative of him its indicative of tydeus. but tydeus died at thebes, and diomedes has to live up to his legacy, so he tries regardless and it never quite feels right. meanwhile odysseus fights tooth and nail to survive, even when he’s surrounded like a boar by hunters and their dogs. sacks cities and kills hundreds of men and for all the help he gets from the immortal gods, odysseus remains wholly mortal. maybe the real disguise is how diomedes is the one scarred and odysseus is the boar, but neither of them look it.

Played Magic The Gathering for the first time tonight (an actual match, four of them even, ones that arent trying to play FOUR PLAYER COMMANDER IN TWENTY MINUTES @cowa-bungus) and won my first match ever. i think i should pick up magic now.

Okay, here are animals. Thorin, Fili, Kili - boars (maybe Fili and Kili could be some other species?) Balin and Dwalin - capybaras (every animal chosen for this art is random...) Oin - goat? Gloin - takin. Dori - serow, Nori - barking deer, Ori - water deer. Bofur - goat (I am not sure about this choice). Bombur - I don’t know. Bifur - sheep.

And I would make Bilbo a different animal really, but decided to do it in faith of all those artists who thought that hobbits were rabbit-like creatures.

Maybe someone sees a better animal suited to some of these characters?

I was thinking of cTechno when i talked about dsmp men being forced into twink designs….. wheres his fat, his hair? Hes a pig!!!!! make him fat and hairy!!!!

Yeah! And he's a warrior and especially a farmer too, on top of being a pig. He needs proper muscles for all the fighting and farming, and he just quite frankly would not care enough about conventional beauty standards to waste time shaving and loosing any and all weight. He'd just be happy and health, chilling in his tundra retirement with a good amount of hair, muscle, and fat as he should

How do these cats get their leather? What’s the process of making it leather for them? Also would they be able to get leather from anything like wild pigs?

With how many small mammals they hunt, there's plenty of access to leather. Squirrels and rabbits produce the most; I plan to cover actually producing leather at some point! The biggest trick is just connecting several pelts together, but there's a lot to mention about the best way to kill without damaging a pelt, keeping it soft, the construction of a very simple tanning rack...

Surprisingly though? The most luxurious pelts are from moles. Small, hard to hunt, but VELVET soft. Mole fur would be the most valuable material the Clans have natural access to, barring certain human textiles.

As for pig leather... boar hunting is another thing I want to make its own entry on. It is the singular most dangerous prey they are able to hunt. The leather haul from a boar would be HUGE, but they would NOT be considering keeping the hide in tact while battling a boar. It would be a fight to stay alive.

the sound of scratching at the wall leaves her restless,  even with her newly found snake companion coiling around her arm,  like an attempt to soothe her worries.   the sound is new,  and strange,  and she doesn't like it.   she likes it even less when cracks start to show,  and when the cracks give way to the wall crumbling,  pieces of it tumbling into her cage.   rising fear claws at her throat,  leaves her paralyzed in the corner as something scuttles about in the small pieces of rubble,  crawling out from a tunnel she hadn't even known was there.

all she can think to do is shakily cling to the hairpin she'd stolen from her older sister,  like it's some sort of lifeline.   it's not subtle,  the way she watches closely as the… animal?  ( she has to assume,  at least.  it's hard to tell,  she's hardly seen any to begin with ),  takes a keen interest in the food she's refused to eat.   without much of an appetite in the first place,  the pain from the still healing cuts on her face has made her more averse to food than ever.   she'll be more than happy if they take the food,  at least she'd avoid another scolding from her mother,  in that fake sickly sweet voice,  telling her to  just eat,  obanai.

when words pull her from her own spiral of thoughts,  she startles,  like a deer caught in headlights.   for a moment,  she considers if the fear and the stress have made her start hallucinating,  and she rubs at her eyes with her free hand.   one blink,  two,  and they are definitely still there,  and it's hard to tell where he's looking,  but she has the distinct feeling that she's being stared at.

“ don't say it so loud… ”   her own voice is barely above a whisper,  trembling and weak,   “ no one but kaburamaru is supposed to know.   they don't want me to escape. ”   after all,  the wrath of a demon missing her meal isn't something any human would want to face.   she understands this much,  even if she's unwilling to accept her own life being used as the sacrifice.
