Art Assignment - “Brain Sounds” response project

The prompt was to visually represent a sound that you’ve never heard before and that kinda made me think about the experience of going to like a flea market or music store and looking through all the CD's, records and tapes that are unfamiliar to me and trying to gauge how they might sound based on cover art and song titles etc. I decided to go with tapes because:

1. it was considerably easier to make

and

2. at one point it was the easiest way for small bands to distribute their music and although the internet is around, now there’s sort of a diy tradition of making tapes so thrift stores across the country are littered with 20 years of homespun cassettes that could either containing Mozart like genius or not that (more often the latter)

Originally i was just going to make it look like some liberal arts students harsh noise album that nobody has ever actually listened to all the way through, including its creator, with really pretentious sounding names that still kinda make you curious what a song called “Eviscerated Cat Gut in C major” could possibly sound like. In the end however i opted for just really stupid titles that sound like (/are) Dead Milkmen rip offs would be more likely to catch my attention and curiosity.

Most of the songs still have titles that evoke sound in one way or another with the exception of “Stethen the Heathen” which is just there for intrigue
