Moving into an apartment together kind of turns Billy into a lazy piece of shit over the course of just a few months.

And Jonathan is completely fine with it, for some odd reason.

Will vouches for him every time Dustin brings it up. Says that Billy isn’t lazy, he just enjoys lounging around the house on his days off. And Dustin can’t really argue with that, considering that Will frequents their place the most and thus spends more time around the blond than anyone else (excluding Max).

It’s also a wonder why Will likes Billy. Especially since he sees him so often.

Dustin can barely stand to be near him for five minutes at a time, much less a whole weekend. And forget about spending the night.

When Billy and Jonathan first settled in together, Billy was nonstop moving furniture, hanging things up, and tending to their little yard. It was hard to catch him standing still for more than a few moments, and even harder for Jonathan to get him to sit down.

Now, their yard stays maintained, but Billy is always sleeping or lounging around while Jonathan cooks and does laundry.

If Jon was a woman, it would seem like more of an obvious problem, Dustin supposes.

But he isn’t, so no one cares.

Except Dustin.

“Hey guys, a little quieter, yeah?” Jonathan whispers.

He stands in front of the stove, stirring hamburger meat while it begins to brown in a pan. The kids all glance over at him from the living room. Will turns the tv down a few notches before he sets the remote back on the coffee table.

Dustin sighs and crosses his arms.

“It’s past noon, we shouldn’t have to be quiet just so your brother’s boyfriend can sleep,” he huffs.

Will quirks a brow at him before he turns back to the movie, unbothered but the statement. That only serves to make Dustin’s irritation blossom into anger.

He reaches for the remote and turns the volume up past where it was before Will turned it down, earning stunned glances from his friends. Will even makes a grab for the remote, but Dustin holds it away. Not far enough, apparently, because Mike snatches it easily and turns the tv down to barely audible.

“What, so you’re on his side now?” Dustin grumbles.

“Whose side?” Mike asks. “Billy’s sleeping and Jon asked us to keep it down, dude, what’s your deal?”

“So what if he’s sleeping? He’s always sleeping. Have you guys seriously not noticed?”

There’s a beat of silence. Will shrugs nonchalantly.

“Yeah. I just don’t see why it’s a big deal to be considerate about it.”

Unbelievable. Dustin sighs and it feels like he’s breathing fire.

“Is it considerate of him to make your brother do everything around the house while he naps constantly?” Dustin snaps.

He snaps his mouth shut once he realizes what he just said — he still feels a little lighter having said it, though. Like he’s let the dam break and now there’s no longer a building pressure behind his skull.

There’s a chuckle from the kitchen that earns the kids’ attention.

“Bill does stuff around the house,” Jonathan says. “He does the dishes, mows the grass, and helps me out on cleaning day.”

Dustin furrows his brows.

“How does he do all that if he’s always asleep?”

Jonathan just laughs again, and sighs fondly when the latch on the bedroom door clicks open. Will nudges Dustin with his elbow.

“Dude, Billy works graveyard shifts,” he whispers.

There’s a consecutive nod around the coffee table, and Dustin’s expression blossoms red with sudden realization — and guilt.

Especially when he spies Billy meandering into the kitchen with dark circles under his eyes.

The blond closes in on Jonathan, lazily draping his arms around his waist and resting his chin heavily on his shoulder. Jonathan smiles and shifts on his feet to accommodate Billy’s weight.

“Whose neck do I need’a fuckin’ wring?” Billy grumbles.

Jonathan chuckles and presses a kiss into his messy curls, earning a little lopsided grin.

“Remote accidentally got sat on,” Jonathan lies. “Go back to bed, grumpy gills.”

“‘M not grumpy…”

“Uh huh. Want some tea, since you’re up?”

Billy sighs. Curls his arms more snugly around Jonathan’s torso and closes his eyes, tucking his face into the crook of his neck.

“I’m okay.”

“You sure?” Jonathan coos. “I can make you a cup.”

The blond is silent. Just shakes his head and leans into Jonathan while he cooks, unbothered by the occasional movement of his arms when he reaches for things.

By the time Jonathan shuts the stove off, having finished preparing the hamburger helper, Billy starts to sag more heavily into him. The brunet chuckles softly and lightly taps Billy’s forearm, and he lifts his head.

“C’mon, hun, let’s get you back to bed.”

Jonathan presses a kiss to his forehead, earning a sleepy smile before they pull apart and pad into the bedroom together.

Meanwhile, Dustin sinks further into his seat on the sofa.

“Did you not know he worked nights?” Lucas asks, amused.

An embarrassed flush rises up Dustin’s neck as his friends chuckle at him.

Of course, they’re never gonna let him live it down. It’s what they do. If he’s lucky, nobody will tell Billy about this and he won’t have to completely die of embarrassment.

Judging by the maniacal cackle that erupts from the bedroom, he should expect an earlier grave than he thought.

Let’s be honest. The reason why Joyce and Jonathan don’t interact with Billy in the series is because they would clock his abuse the second they talked to him and the reason why Hopper has an intense dislike of Billy is because he used to be just like Billy and he hates the reminder of it. I like to think that in another universe, Jonathan befriends Billy before he becomes popular and Joyce realizes what’s going on when Jonathan invites him for dinner. She gives him the first motherly hug he’s gotten since his mom left him and she tells him that she’ll handle it. She then proceeds to ream Hopper out because he promised her that he wouldn’t let any more abusers slip through the cracks when he became Sheriff and he deals with Neil before properly combing Hawkins out for other abusers and getting rid of them.

Billy’s practically adopted by Joyce and he helps them realize that Will is acting weird thus preventing the trap from being set. Imagine Jonathan bringing Billy along with him whenever he went anywhere with Nancy and Billy being hated by Nancy since he took her place as top student in their year which infuriates her endlessly. They tell him all about the Upside Down and he helps the team at the lab with keeping everyone alive. He is extremely surprised to see Max with the other kids and while they fight, it’s only because they care about each other. Billy doesn’t meet Steve Harrington properly until that night and he doesn’t get how everything is connected until Jonathan tells him what happened and he laughs at the image of Steve being beaten in a fight by Jonathan before helping them with a monster called the Demogorgon. He’s a lot more chill with Jonathan’s influence so it’ll be so fun for him to literally whale on the demodogs as a form of anger management. He also doesn’t really dislike the kids since he knows for a fact that they’re Will’s friends so they must be somewhat okay since Will was okay.

Unsurprisingly, Billy and El get along like a house on fire after everything that happened which forces Hopper to change his opinion on Billy rather quickly. With either Billy or Max taking up her time, she doesn’t have time for Mike who the siblings both dislike. Billy and Max convince her that she could do better and much to Hopper’s delight, dumps his ass. Billy’s also a lot more comfortable talking to Joyce about what he went through so when the middle-aged mom brigade starts staring at him for too long, practically objectifying him, he’s willing to tell Joyce who tears into them with fervor. The kids spend equal amounts of time bothering Billy at the pool and begging Steve for free samples which Billy complains about to Jonathan who tells him that he signed up for it so he needs to just deal with it.

The events of season 3 still happen with the mindflayer but weirdly enough, it’s with Tommy and Carol who were heading to the motel to have some fun. They immediately target Steve when coming back and he realizes that the mind flayer has Tommy pretty fast and he gets El to take care of it with Billy’s help in holding Carol back without killing her. Later on, Billy helps Steve with the Russians too and he manages to distract the guards well enough for them to escape untortured so they could get back up in the form of Hopper and El.

Weirdly enough, Steve starts to see Billy in a new light while Jonathan has been slowly falling for his new best friend for a while now. Billy’s had crushes on both boys at different times but he’s pretty sure they’re both straight and into Nancy so he doesn’t bother. Cue The Byer-Hoppers deciding to move to California for a new start and Jonathan inviting Billy to come with them with the promise of bringing Max and Susan too if he wanted. Steve tries to convince him to stay. Billy doesn’t know how to choose between the temptation of freedom and a newfound familiarity.

The disgust on Steve's face shocks Billy. Hits him right in his bruised chest. He should be familiar with that look. Neil's worn it since Billy could walk.

He never thought it'd taint Steve's pretty face.

"I don't know what I did to give you the impression that I was a queer," Steve sneers.

Billy opens his mouth. Nothing comes out.

Don't cry, don't cry. This isn't real, this is a nightmare.

"And even if I was…" Steve shudders at the thought, before continuing, "you'd never be my first choice."

"Unless you're joking. You must be."

I wish I was.

Steve whistles loudly. "Holy shit. You're a fucking fa-"

Billy socks him in the mouth before he can finish that ugly sentence. The taller boy blinks in shock, holding his jaw.

Why the fuck does he look so confused? Don't tell me he doesn't know why I hit him.

"You hit like a bitch," Steve spits out, blood and saliva landing on Billy's sneakers.

Billy pushes him on his ass and starts kicking him. Little by little, Steve Harrington disappears, until all Billy sees is Neil. He kicks harder, eyes stinging.

"Are you fucking crying? Jesus Christ, dude. You really fell for me, huh. You're a dumb ass."

"Shut UP!"

"You could beat me into a goddamn coma, but I bet your heart is in a million pieces, right? I broke your fairy heart, didn't I? You could never hurt me like I'm hurting you right now. Isn't that right?"

"STOP! STOP IT!"

"You're insane. You're a fucking basket case! Did you honestly think there was a chance in hell that we would be together?"

As if he's just been slapped, Billy stumbles backwards, his back hitting the wall.

"You said it yourself; I've got girls on their hands and knees for me. Why would I want you?"

Suddenly he's seven years old again, watching his mother speed out of the driveway, her blue car growing smaller and smaller until it's a speck of dust.

Dad was right. No one wants me.

Every dream he's had of a soft, safe life with Harrington is gone. He knew they were just dreams, but still… they were real to him. He finally grew a pair and confessed, only for Harrington to cut off his balls and crush his aching heart.

Jonathan's not usually the type to care about gossip, but Tommy's voice is impossible to ignore. At least, that's what he tells himself as he marches toward the boy, glaring daggers at him.

"You said something about Billy. Do you know where he is?"

"You're messing up my collar!"

Jonathan yanks him closer with a strength neither expects from him. "Where is he?"

"Out in his car. Heard from Steve that he completely lost his marbles. Beat him pretty bad."

Doesn't Billy have a huge crush on Steve? Why would he-

Oh. Fuck.

Jonathan speed-walks out of Mr. Jacobs' classroom, breaking out into a jog as soon as he's out in the parking lot.

Billy is slumped over the wheel. He's not moving. Jonathan's not even sure if he's breathing.

Fuck.

"Billy? It's Jon. Could you give me a sign that you're alive? Just so I know not to break your window?"

Billy slowly raises his head like a scarlet turtle poking out of its shell. "You better fucking not."

Jonathan leans on the car, finally catching his breath. "You're alive."

"Unfortunately. You don't sound disappointed about that. Me being alive."

"Why would I be disappointed?"

Billy shrugs. "Everyone else is."

"You're wrong."

"Oh, yeah? Name one person who-"

"Me. Who else is going to be my study buddy?"

"Nancy."

Jonathan sighs, resting his forehead on the window. "I heard about what happened."

"Of course you did. So what're you still doing here? Aren't you afraid I'm gonna turn you gay?"

"It's a bit too late for that."

"Thought my ears were playing tricks or something."

"That asshole doesn't deserve even a second of your time, you know," Jonathan says.

"I know it was stupid, but I-I really thought he liked me," Billy sobs.

"It's not stupid! He's the idiot. He could've had someone really great, and he fucked it up."

" "Someone really great"? Now I know you're not talking about me."

"And what if I am? You aren't stupid for wanting to be loved."

"Nobody loves me," Billy whispers, sniffling.

"I do. I love you."

Billy stops crying and unlocks the door. He hides his face in his hands, peeking up at Jonathan.

"D-don't say stuff you don't mean. Don't give me h-hope just so you can-"

"I've never meant anything more. You don't have to respond. It's okay. I just… wanted you to know that. I may not be what you want, but you are loved."

"B-but Nancy, I thought?"

"She's dating Barb."

"Oh. Can I… ask you a question?"

"Sure, bub."

"What do you like about me?"

"How much time do you have?"

"I'm serious."

"Me too. We'd be here all day until we're both old and grey."

"Sure." Even though his face is still hidden, Jonathan is sure he just rolled his eyes.

"Thing one: your heart."

"My heart? Jesus Christ."

"You have a really big heart. I remember when you gave a stray dog the last of your cheeseburger."

"Wasn't that your burger, though?"

"I'm retracting my confession," Jonathan deadpans.

"Then you do have some sense of self-preservation. Good."

"Quit it."

"Quit what?"

"Acting like you're a bomb set to go off any minute."

"I could've killed Harrington."

"Who cares? Everyone knows he can't win a fight to save his life. I would've done worse. I'm pretty sure I have, actually. So don't fall into your self-loathing period."

"You would, huh?"

"If I'd been there and heard whatever he said to you, I would have killed him."

"Then you'd be arrested," Billy points out.

"You're such a boy scout."

"Hmph. How about Thing 2?"

"You owe me a burger." Jonathan gets into the passenger seat, knowing full well he's not letting Billy pay a cent.

"Thing 2: your mouth."

"That's kinda slutty, dude."

"Would you let me finish?"

"You should know by now that I can't take compliments." He starts the Camaro up, adding somberly, "Not like I get many. Unless it's about my ass."

"It is a nice ass."

"Do you wanna walk to the diner?"

"You've always got something to say."

Billy glares at him, but then his expression softens once he sees Jonathan's fond smile.

"No one's making you listen to me."

"That's right." Jon whips his hair back and says raspily, "Here I am."

"I don't sound like that!"

I hope I can help you forget Steve. Maybe it'll be easier for you to move on if he were out of the picture. Anything for you. "You didn't deny the hair thing."

"Shut up."

Little by little, they're falling back into place. Your loss, Harrington.
