Major Project: Mountain and Sea's Fantasy
Blog 4: Developing Ideas and Gameplay
Starting with history, mythology and geography, I began developing concepts and gameplay mechanics for the game. Considering the plot and the varied locations, I felt that the gameplay should portray the different landscapes of the era and the unique skills of the characters and monsters.
The first difficulty faced was choosing a game mode that corresponded to the theme of the Shanhaijing. I considered two main modes:horizontal fighting games and rougelike games.
Some of the more iconic fighting games that come to mind are the Guilty Gear Series,' 'Skullgirls,' 'BlazBlue,'. These games are highly focused on skill and action, with scenarios and plot weighted very low to showcase characters in a way that highlights their skills.

On the other hand, in rogue games such as "Warm Snow," "Hades," and "The Binding of Isaac,” these games rely on exploration, random generation, and multiple maps.

This model has a high degree of playability, variability and complexity perfectly in line with the richness of the latitudes, monsters and characters of The Book of Mountains. I played these games and compared their features and gameplay mechanics. For example, Guilty Gear and Skullgirls have great character styles and fluid movements which help to create mythical characters. On the other hand, Hades has a good narrative, randomised gameplay and a growth system that enhances the plot and strategy of the game.
So, after much deliberation, I've come to the conclusion that rogue-like games are a better fit for this project. In this respect, the rogue-like genre offers great flexibility and depth, allowing the player to investigate the world in greater detail.
The goal of this is to cram information about the worldview, characters, and monsters into a variety of tiny bits and pieces, and introduce the player to Chinese mythology in a relatively lightweight way.

The Sheep and the Goats (12x18)
Since @mittensmorgul pointed out the 3 Sheeps beer in The Memory Remains (see http://drsilverfish.tumblr.com/post/159635044069/the-rule-of-three )
Tumblr media
I’ve been thinking about two Biblical stories involving sheep.
The first involves Abraham’s near sacrfice of his son Isaac (a test of his faith by God). He substitutes a ram (sheep) for the sacrifice at the eleventh hour.
Now Mary effectively sacrificed Sam in her demon deal with Azaezel to bring John back to life. She didn’t know that’s what she was sacrificing (i.e. that Azaezel would come into her home to feed demon blood to her baby son) but she knew she’d agreed to something NOT GOOD involving Azaezel’s entry to her home ten year’s hence (4x03 In the Beginning).
The second relevant Biblical story which the 3 Sheep beer puts me in mind of, is Jesus’ parable of the sheep and the goats.
We are dealing with Black Bill and his goat’s head mask, in The Memory Remains, and Moloch also appears to have a goat’s head (big curly horns from what we see of him in the meat locker - although Moloch is described in various literature as having a bull’s head). Moreover, Mary is said by Mr. Ketch to be off hunting Chupacabra in Texas. Chupacabra means, in Spanish, goat-eater.
NB, as I mentioned in a previous post, Moloch was a god to whom children, specifically, were sacrificed. Another reference to Mary’s sacrifice of Sam, and/or to John Winchester’s sacrifice of his children’s childhoods on the altar of his obsessive revenge quest. See:
http://drsilverfish.tumblr.com/post/159581042479/moloch-winchester-12x18
So, we have 3 Sheep beer, and several goat references - hence, the sheep and the goats.
Now Jesus’ parable was about Judgement at the hand of God. People would be separated into sheep at his right hand, the righteous people who had helped others in life, and goats at his left hand, the damned who had turned away the poor and needy in life. Sheep (Jesus being the “good shepherd”) would enter Heaven and goats would enter Hell.
Sam and Dean’s way of hunting is focussed on “saving people, hunting things, the family business”. That motto is deliberately recalled in it dark mirror image by Pete’s line, “Hunting people, killing them, the family business.” Pete - who wears a goat’s head in his disguise as Black Bill.
Sam and Dean are thus on the side of the sheep - first and foremost helping people in need. They understand (although they’ve both lost sight of it at points on their journeys) that’s their true significance in the world. As Sam says in the episode - “The people we’ve saved - they’re our legacy.”
The BMOL, on the other hand, are on the side of the goats. They don’t seem to care about saving people so much. Their focus is all about killing things, and they apparently see all supernatural creatures as “things”, automatically deserving of massacre. They, after all, are planning supernatural genocide.
Mary Winchester is “stuck in the middle”, between the sheep and the goats. She thinks she can “have it all” (hunting with the BMOL and a relationshp with her sons). At present she is killing goat-eaters (Chupacabra) with the BMOL, but when her lover, Ketch’s, orders to terminate her sons filters through, perhaps she will rejoin the side of the sheep.
Set dressing narrative adds such wonderful layers to SPN’s story-telling, doesn’t it?
