In ogni caso Luigi era un ragazzo divertentissimo ed era l'unico di noi sbollettati che aveva i soldi, perché la famiglia di sua madre, gli Zoccola, erano produttori vinicoli e non gli facevano mancare niente. Tant'è che proprio la sua famiglia all'inizio non voleva che usasse il suo vero cognome quando cantava, dava fastidio associare quello di una rinomata vineria alla musica leggera. E allora quando ha iniziato a calcare il palcoscenico ha usato nomi strambi inventati da noi di volta in volta: Gigi Mai, Dick Ventuno, Gordon Cliff. Ecco, se da un lato eravamo bravi con le canzoni e i titoli, non lo eravamo altrettanto con i nomi d'arte, che a ripensarci erano proprio nomi di merda.

In ogni caso è stato proprio Luigi il principale finanziatore quando abbiamo aperto il nostro locale. Oddio, locale, forse è esagerato chiamarlo così. Uno dei nostri amici, Roy Grassi, era figlio di un impresario edile che aveva alcune case in costruzione in via Donghi, zona in realtà terribile perché dovevi parcheggiare lontanissimo e poi farti due o tre chilometri in salita per arrivarci. In una di queste c'era un enorme ammezzato vuoto e abbiamo deciso di farci il nostro ritrovo. Peccato che ci venissero solo gli amici a ballare, perché nessuno sapeva della sua esistenza. In seguito ho disegnato io dei manifesti e li attaccavo in giro per fare pubblicità, così qualcuno ha iniziato a frequentarlo, ma sempre troppo pochi. Alla fine, più che un'impresa commerciale, era una festa fra amici. Anche perché, oltre a noi, non veniva mai nessuno da fuori a suonare. Tranne uno: Giorgio Gaber. Si trovava a Genova per suonare con un'orchestra e una sera che era libero è venuto a cantare. Tra tutti noi forse era l'unico a credere seriamente che la musica potesse diventare il suo mestiere.

E dire che aveva iniziato a suonare la chitarra solo per allenare le dita della mano sinistra, dopo che la poliomielite gli aveva colpito il braccio.
