As our book club revs up to choose the best picture books of 2019 for our holiday list, the review copies of books are pouring in from the publishers. One of the most striking so far has been "Carter Reads the Newspaper" (2019), by Deborah Hopkinson and illustrator Don Tate. Knowing how much I love picture book biography, this shouldn't come as a surprise. But this beautiful story about the life of Carter G. Woodson, the man responsible for what is now known as Black History Month, really grabbed me more than I expected. Woodson never set out to be an activist or do brave things. What he was, was a man who learned to value the strength inherent in education, and his rise from humble beginnings as the son of former slaves to becoming a respected and accomplished academic is a story of hard work and persistence. Thanks to Peachtree Publishing for this beautiful book, provided for my honest consideration. I adore picture book biographies because they can be such an accessible, interesting window into history for kids. Today's biography comes from my own collection, and is a great example of that. With "The Extraordinary Music of Mr. Ives: The True Story of a Famous American Composer" (2012), author-illustrator Joanne Stanbridge goes beyond just examining the life of composer Charles Ives, looking at how we was affected by one of the great tragedies of his time, the sinking of the Lusitania, how it influenced his music, and the unusual manner in which his previously unpopular compositions came to be a part of the culture. We often talk about being inclusive, but so many children's books meant to be about inclusion are just dreadfully ham-handed morality tales, unappealing to actual kids. On the other hand, there's a lot to love about Deborah Heiligman's "The Boy Who Loved Math: The Improbable Life of Paul Erdos" (2013), a picture book biography of the renowned Hungarian mathematician. What's the connection, you ask? As soon as I read this beautiful book, gorgeously illustrated by LeUyen Pham and strewn with brightly coloured numbers and mathematical symbols, something jumped out at me. Here was an academically exceptional man who saw the patterns in everything around him, yet struggled with the activities of daily life; a man who could be oddly blunt and eccentric but was nonetheless deeply beloved of those around him. He seemed ... familiar. And sure enough, when I looked deeper, I learned something not mentioned in the story: that it's believed that Erdos, like me, had Asperger's Syndrome, a form of autism. ❤ In my opinion, this book is brilliant not just for it's biographical elements, but for its beautiful, sympathetic portrayal of an autistic human, fully formed, dignified and worthy of love and respect INCLUSIVE OF, not DESPITE, his disabilities. Read this book to your kids. I love picture book biographies, which always seem to be the perfect combination of information and entertainment. And what better subject for a children's picture book than the man who pioneered the very idea of them? "Balderdash!: John Newbery and the Boisterous Birth of Children's Books" (2017) is fabulous fun. Author Michelle Markel AND Illustrator Nancy Carpenter have created a beautiful book about Newbury's drive to make books that were a joy for children to read instead of a dreary chore.
