Lunar New Year Love Story by Gene Yang, art by Leuyen Pham. First Second, 2024. 9781250908261. 352pp.
Val has a year to find true love, or Saint Valentine wants her heart. (Their friendship started off as an imaginary friend / real friend sort of situation back when he presented as a winged cherub, but later he appears to her as a creepy old spirit). The complications: Val's sad father, who told her a huge lie; her grandmother, a pushy but hilarious woman who always wants to feed Val and take her to church; and a super cute guy who likes her but doesn't really seem to want to be her boyfriend. Plus that guy has an awkward cousin, whom she once embarrassed (or something) with a Valentine. Along for the ride is Bernice, Val's friend who dates lots of boys and draws on her shoes. There's a ton about lion dancing in the book, which Val gets good at. Scenes of lion dancing, along with the rest of the graphic novel, prove that Pham is one of the best artists working in comics.
I suppose I should no longer be surprised that I enjoy YA romances occasionally. This is my favorite of the year, a book I plan to gift to many folks on my list.

Tumblr media
Welcome to Book-Keeping! I’m happy to share with you today the newest picture book from Kelly DiPucchio and LeUyen Pham (whose artwork I absolutely love), Grace Goes to Washington! I’ve got all the details on the book for you today along with a giveaway of three copies, so let’s get started.
About the Book
Tumblr media
title: Grace Goes to Washington author: Kelly DiPucchio illustrator: LeUyen Pham publisher: Disney-Hyperion release date: 3 September 2019
"Who's in charge here?"
When Grace learns about the three branches of the United States government, she and the rest of the student council put the lesson into practice as they debate how to spend the money from a school fund-raiser. Should they buy new sports equipment? Books for the library? Instruments for the music room? The arguments continue as they travel to Washington, DC, for a field trip. Exploring government buildings and national monuments, Grace feels closer than ever to her dream of becoming president someday. But she and her classmates have a lot to learn about what it means to serve the needs of the people, especially when the people want such different things!
In this follow-up to New York Times best seller Grace for President, Kelly DiPucchio not only introduces how our government makes decisions, but also shares what it takes to be a true public servant.
Add to Goodreads: Grace Goes to Washington Purchase the Book: Amazon | Kindle | B&N | iBooks | Kobo | TBD
About the Author
Tumblr media
Kelly is the award-winning author of several children’s books, thousands of To-Do lists, and a few recipe cards. Two of her books, Grace For President and The Sandwich Swap, were New York Times bestsellers.
Like most kids who grew up in the 1970’s, Kelly had a pet goat and bought all her clothes from the Sears catalog. Like most teenagers who grew up in the 1980’s, Kelly had really big glasses and feathered hair.
Today, Kelly lives with her husband and three children in southeastern Michigan, where she enjoys writing just about everything except her own bio.

REVIEW: Real Friends by Shannon Hale and Leuyen Pham This is such a great graphic novel. I didn't realise it was a memoir but quickly realised when the main character had the same name as the author. It is a great story about friendship and primary school. It does deal with some hard hitting things that kids feel and just don't understand and I think it did a great job at addressing them. This book made me sad and also hopeful. I related to Shannon so much and just wanted to give her a hug. There is also some mental health elements that I thought was interesting especially with this being set in the 80s. I will definitely be recommending this graphic novel to kids I know as I feel it is very important. 4.5 Stars! #bookstagram #booklover #bookreview #graphicnovel #bestfriends #shannonhale #leuyenpham @01firstsecond @squeetus @uyenloseordraw https://www.instagram.com/p/Cc5Jh6KLu7f/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

We often talk about being inclusive, but so many children's books meant to be about inclusion are just dreadfully ham-handed morality tales, unappealing to actual kids. On the other hand, there's a lot to love about Deborah Heiligman's "The Boy Who Loved Math: The Improbable Life of Paul Erdos" (2013), a picture book biography of the renowned Hungarian mathematician. What's the connection, you ask? As soon as I read this beautiful book, gorgeously illustrated by LeUyen Pham and strewn with brightly coloured numbers and mathematical symbols, something jumped out at me. Here was an academically exceptional man who saw the patterns in everything around him, yet struggled with the activities of daily life; a man who could be oddly blunt and eccentric but was nonetheless deeply beloved of those around him. He seemed ... familiar. And sure enough, when I looked deeper, I learned something not mentioned in the story: that it's believed that Erdos, like me, had Asperger's Syndrome, a form of autism. ❤ In my opinion, this book is brilliant not just for it's biographical elements, but for its beautiful, sympathetic portrayal of an autistic human, fully formed, dignified and worthy of love and respect INCLUSIVE OF, not DESPITE, his disabilities. Read this book to your kids. Let them learn that different is not a negative. ⚫ ⚫ ⚫ #noodlenutskidsbooks #bookstagraminthe6ix #theboywholovedmath #theimprobablelifeofpaulerdős #deborahheiligman #leuyenpham #paulerdos #paulerdős #picturebookbiography #picturebookbiographies #biographyforkids #mathematician #mathpicturebooks #mathspicturebooks #roaringbrookpress #aspergerssyndrome #aspergers #actuallyautistic #autisticpeople #autismisawesome #aspies #aspiepride #autisticpride #autistickidsrock #inclusionmatters #diversityandinclusion #inclusion #representation #readwithriver_discussions #inclusivechildrensbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/B3iCh2OnY96/?igshid=1os6f3xtnpt3k

"You deserve to have real friends, the kind who treat you well and get how amazing you are." - Shannon Hale . . I loved this book so much! I identified with this story a lot. I had a hard time with friends in elementary school and I think that if I had had a book like this in elementary school I would have realized I wasn't alone in my struggles with friends. It also deals with having anxiety when it comes to making friends, this something I can definitely relate and I loved reading about it in a story written for children. Thank you @squeetus for this wonderful book!! #realfriends #shannonhale #leuyenpham #bookstagram #booksoutside #graphicnovel
