So I read an article the other night and it got me thinking:
The sort of contrast between Vakama and Takua
As the article says, Takua is more adventurous, he wants to see what's beyond, likes exploring, he is the Chronicler of Mata-Nui mostly because he is unable to sit still like the other Matoran.
By all means, Takua is almost like the ideal protagonist: bright eyed, eager to see more of the world, someone who is a good cross between Indiana Jones and Moana. Pretty sure you get my point with our boy Takua
Now compare that with Vakama, who is perfectly happy with his life in Meteu Nui. He's content with his life as a mask-maker, he's happy with being so good at his job that the Turaga asked him specifically to make the Mask of Time, with the friends he has
Where Takua is an ideal protagonist, Vakama is more of a tragic protagonist. Don't get me wrong, Takua is also something of a tragic protagonist, given his full character story and his past, all the same Vakama is very similar
The two have had their happy, content lives taken from them, both have had to become heroes to save everyone, even losing their homes in the process
Neither really had a choice in what happened to them, but where Takua was a little quicker to accept who he had to become, Vakama accepts his becoming a toa a little slower, almost aginizingly slow, but, at the same time, it's understandable why that is the case, given that Vakama has his visions, that he has teammates that openly doubt him and call him crazy, and whenever he does slip up, the results are disastrous
Takua also makes some pretty big mistakes when he avoids him destiny to become a toa, yet he was still a matoran, not yet a toa
Even with how similar these two are, the differences between them are both jarring and also very intriguing and it admittedly love these two characters so much more
Tl;Dr, I love Vakama and Takua because their stories are both similar and so different, and a majority of that has to do who they are as characters

The intro from The Mask of Light film as a block print with watercolour, medieval illuminated manuscript style. Took me about 3 months, mostly planing out the lego pieces as the floral decorations
If anyone is interested in a print let me know!

Practicing my Bionicle style with some Toas. I kind of like it. Once you get how the pieces work it's fun to draw, I just love doing details.
Here's just the sketch since I liked it too

Going through the 2001-2003 Templar Studios games and animations again because of course, and something hit me
Tumblr media
Vakama just uses the Sacred Fire as an excuse to share things he already knows from Metru Nui but make it appear like he's also only just hearing from it, right? Matoran or Tahu come to him with a question, he has the information but if he just gives it to them they'll be pissed at him for not sharing it sooner and also question how he knows in the first place, so he just gazes into this fancy fire and pretend he is also only just finding out, everybody happy
And I suppose the other Turaga do similar things: Nuju uses the stars (which isn't even a complete lie), Nokama probably consults the waves, etc.
And then there's Matau
And I'm sorry but there's only one way I can envision this happening:
Lewa: Turaga, what are those creaturethings coming from Makuta? Matau: Let's quickask the Almighty Kewa *walks to a branch on which a Kewa is just chilling* Matau: Mighty Kewa, what are the creaturethings coming from the darkgrounds of Mata Nui? Kewa: *caws once* Matau: they're namecalled Bohrok, and their dutygoal is to destroy. Their powerstrength is their Krana, and you need to quickfly and collect all their Kranatypes so the way to their nestlair will be opened Lewa: *confusion* Kongu: don't doubtask it
For added hilarity he always asks a different Kewa but insists that the one he's asking this time is The Almighty Kewa

GO GO HORDIKA RANGERS
A less traumatic approach to the Toa Hordika redesign
Oh boy, where to start? Since I had alot going behind the scenes redesigning these. Well lets start with me having an idea to basically having the Rahi be like Power Rangers' helmet motive. So did a research on their Rahi, personality, profession, etc.
So ended up being: Tiger (Vakama), Shark (Nokama), Snake (Matau), Owl (Nuju), Bull (Onewa), and Boar (Whenua) (Was thinking of mole at first but somehow the final design makes it look more like a tapir-ish boar than a mole). Then had an idea to incorporate their Metru masks as their helmets' lower half, which then made me realize that pretty much their Hordika masks are just "Elongated Face, with Horizontal Markings". So had to get a bit creative with that.
Then had to design their silhouettes/bodytypes since, might as well. So scoured their set heights from photos and building instructions. Ended up with having their Turaga forms as the main height reference and then mixed up with their Metru Height.
Also designed custom Hordika chest pieces, which then prompts me to scour every toa team ever (+Bohrok and the Kals, cause why not).
So yes, its a lot of work. I have no idea why I do this to myself.

AU where immediately after grabbing the Kanohi Avohkii out of the lava Takua promptly fumbles, drops it again, trips while trying to catch it, and then proceeds to face plant directly onto the mask.
Search for the seventh Toa speedrun complete :P
“But I can still compete in the kolhii match, right?” he asks, causing Jaller and Vakama to both just immediately facepalm themselves. Vakama resigns himself to substituting Kapura in his place; he either takes the entire match to move a single step or he does his quick travel thing and wins in under ten seconds.
Either way, Vakama is completely exasperated by the day’s events and 10000000% done.

There's something I think Bionicle fans might be sleeping on:
A swap between Takua and Vakama, more specifically if Takua became a Toa during the Metru-Nui story. It complicates A LOT, but just imagine it:
Toa Lhikan goes to give the toa stone and map to Vakama, COMPLETELY certain on choosing Vakama, but a chase throws a wrench in the works and the stone and map end up in Takua's hands instead. Lhikan ultimately tracks him down and tells him that what he has is SUPER important and isn't even supposed to go to him. Takua is even more cinfused, but no time to talk because the dark hunters arrive and attack, though while Takua hides the stone and map on his person, he's still used as a hostage, which ultimately gets Lhikan captured, despite Takua's protests. Maybe Takua would try to fight or try to help Lhikan get away, but the result is the same.
Later, after more hiding and some Jaller being suspicious, Takua goes to the Great Temple and meets the other Matoran who were given Toa stones, and they all become Toa, though rather than becoming a Toa of Light, Takua gets some gold as he transforms, like maybe along his arms, legs, torso, and maybe has golden hands and feet. It confuses the other Toa, but they also ask where Lhikan is because Takua saw him last. Takua would be more defensive, saying he tried to help, but he ultimately couldn't do anything because the dark hunters were too strong.
Nokama breaks up the bickering and the team are stuck trying to figure out how to reveal their new Toa status.
Remember: we're dealing with Takua, not Vakama. Where Vakama has his visions, Takua does not, so he's more or less stuck in the present.
The team quickly run into trouble and help free the city from the Morbuzakh, finding their disks along the way and even growing together as a team. Maybe as a sort of "background" detail, Takua can be messing with his mask because it moves a lot. At first, he's quiet, like he's keeping an eye out and gauging his new team, and ultimately gets them all to start warming up to him, sort of acting as Nokama's secind in command before he has to step up, figuratively sit everyone down, and get them to victory.
In this search is Vakama, who helps Takua, but in exchange for something: he needs the great disks to make something for Turaga Dume. The team is not happy about it at all, but Takua agrees, saying he'll hand the disks over if Turaga Dume doesn't want them.
When they pledge themselves heroes of Metru-Nui, Turaga Dume is not impressed, especially with seeing troublemaking Takua with a group of jesters. They get the crap beaten out of them and half the team is captured. Before escaping, though, Takua nabs Vakama and books it, his reason being that Vakama wanted the disks anyway and is long due for a vacation.
Unlike Vakama, Takua isn't really questioned because the team thinks he's cross-wired. Instead, he's questioned because he gives off, "accident" vibes. When asked what he does, he answers with, "What CAN'T I do?" When asked about which Metru he's from, he firmly says Ta-Metru even though the blue of his mask says otherwise, and the gold on his body does not help his case at all.
Onewa and Matau have the most doubt towards Takua, Onewa because Takua is not Toa material at all and is the reason Toa Lhikan is gone and Matau because he and Takua just get on each other's nerves.
Going back to having Vakama around, both Nokama and Matau think it's a bad idea, but it's too late to just put him back, so they bring him with, though they realize that they made the right call when Vakama reveals that Dume wanted him to make a Mask of Time, even more so when they realize that Dume is the Makuta Teridax in disguise and cannot give him the Mask Maker or the disks AT ALL.
There's more I could go into, but I'll save that for a future post. This is long enough as is😅

Toa Hordika pack sleeping together.
Tumblr media
I had this idea when I remembered Matau saying something along the lines of "I better be with my pack-team!" And thought they would look lovely all snuggled together like actual rahi lmao
That was far from happening tho, they were very dysfunctional during that time 😵‍💫
