Angel Delight
How can you not admire this Owl in flight hunting in Total Slence, reason being is the wings. Some Owls have a comb like leading edge, this enables the to fly silent. Other birds don’t have this feather formation and thats why they make a whooshing noise. Yesterday I witnessed the Barn Owl beating its wings to pin point its pray. But I was amazed how still and how many different wing formations…

Didn't sit very close to the panel, unfortunately. But going to DBZ world!
I saw another Broly, the new one. He was very nice. There are also these two very good SSBlue Goku and Vegeta.

Ross's gull is easy because it's specific name is rosea, which means "rosy", because...it's pink.
Tumblr media
A lot of gull species can a show temporary diet-related pink flush, but Ross's gulls are especially known for it.
Tumblr media
So "Rosy gull" is right there, and it's not taken in English! It sounds like the original common name and won't be a huge adjustment. They can even keep their bird banding species code, ROGU. Easy.

the whole entire birding community has been debating the merits vs drawbacks of changing eponymous common names for literal years, but now that someone’s actually made a decision we finally get to hear the opinions of randos who don’t care about ornithology. thank god! where on earth would we be without Jeff who thinks this is all “too woke”.

saw my first belted kingfisher today; gosh, they're charming little birds! they swallow prey whole and regurgitate pellets like owls, hover in the air like hummingbirds, and excavate their own burrows like bank swallows. and their spiky crests are so expressive. very cute.

when they sell coconut fiber hanging baskets in garden centers, what they don’t tell you is that the fiber is great for making nests and every spring small birds will descend to destroy them

Notes: Horned wavey is the name given in the first recognizable written description of a Ross's goose. "Wavey" comes from an Algonquian term for geese, and "horned" refers to the barnacle-like caruncles males of this species grow at the base of their bill as they age. (Barnacle goose is an excellent name, but already taken.)

I have a hanging flower basket lined with coconut fiber and apparently this is the PERFECT material for goldfinch nests, because they are cramming it into their thieving little beaks as fast as possible, even though I did actually SET OUT FREE NESTING MATERIAL FOR THEM
