On this day, March 12th, 1969, Paul and Linda hastily organized their wedding, a small civil ceremony at Marylebone Town Hall. However, the wedding nearly didn't happen. The night before, Paul and Linda had a heated argument, casting doubt over their plans. Just days earlier, Paul had also visited Maggie McGivern, his secret lover since late 1966, seemingly in a state of shock🌸🌸🌸

Despite the cold and rain, fans gathered early outside🌹

Around 9:30 a.m., the couple arrived discreetly through a side entrance. They were joined by Mal Evans and Peter Brown, from Apple. None of the other Beatles attended the wedding🪴

The ceremony, scheduled for 9:45 a.m., was delayed as Paul's brother and best man, Mike McGear, was stuck on a train from Birmingham (the previous night, he was there for a concert with his group, The Scaffold). When he finally arrived, an hour late, the four-minute ceremony took place, and the newlyweds emerged to a large and emotional crowd🌺

Overwhelmed, Linda tossed her bouquet before they quickly drove away🎍

Back at Paul's home in St. John's Wood, they celebrated with champagne and telegrams. Later, they received a church blessing and had their wedding breakfast at The Ritz. Among the attendees were George and Patti Harrison🌱

That evening, Paul left for a recording session, joking to fans, "I still have to work." Their honeymoon would wait — but their new life together had begun🌻

4D Medicine Secures $4.4m for Novel Biomaterial Platform Technology

4D Biomaterials has secured £3.4m ($4.4m) in a series A funding round to complete pre-clinical trials of its unique biomaterial platform for use with surgical devices and a wide range of 3D-printed implants and seek FDA approval for the US market.

Co-founded by Andrew Dove as a spin-out from the Universities of Birmingham and Warwick in 2020, 4D Medicine has developed 4Degra, a resorbable biomaterial used for a wide range of implantable medical devices such as orthopaedic implants, or soft tissue scaffolds, vital for patients recovering from injuries or surgeries.

Mike McCartney on Paul and Linda’s wedding:

Having obliged as best man at my wedding it was not unnatural for brother Paul to request that I should reciprocate at his the following year. Jane had left Paul’s North London home, and Paul was wooing Linda Eastman, a New York freelance photographer. It was March 1969 and I was doubling up with the Scaffold at two Birmingham nightclubs (one of which had all the dressing room lights placed in a cardboard box to keep the Pakistani conjuror’s chickens alive). The week was made even more hectic because each morning we had to struggle out of bed at God knows what hour to be down in London for a Watney’s ale TV commercial . . . ‘White suits will be worn.’ On the evening of March the 10th Paul was on the line from London to my hotel room. ‘I’m getting married to Lin tomorrow morning, d’you want to be my best man, and don’t tell ANYONE.’ Beatlemania still abounding, and Paul being the final Beatle bachelor, immediacy and strictest confidence were of the essence, so promises were made, and I settled down for a restless sleep. Thoughts of my new sister-in-law, heavily confused with Eastman Kodak cameras, filled the small hotel room. What would she be like? Would I like her? Would she like me? In the middle of the night, in the middle of a dream, the sudden thought, ‘What ring?’ hit me, and in a panic I called London. ‘Don’t worry, I’ve got the ring, you just be at Marylebone Registry Office at ten o’clock. Now get some sleep.’ Miraculously my alarm called me on time and I struggled to the station with my secret locked firmly with all the other big secrets . . . in my brain and heart. Miraculously the train was on time, and I boarded with great expectations. (continued under the cut)

Considering how it would affect the Watney’s people who were, after all, paying Scaffold a large sum of money, I could contain myself no longer and blurted out the secret to John and Roge as we chuffed away from platform nine, Birmingham New Street Station. Now everyone was happy. Everyone, that is, except the train. It broke down and we were over an hour late! Resigning myself to the fact that when we finally hit London the wedding would be well and truly over I nevertheless asked our chauffeur-driver Rolls to call in at the registry office just in case they were still there. When we got there, throngs of people massed around the entrance so I leapt put of the Watney’s wagon, explaining to my Scaffolders that Paul must still be inside and that I’d be back in the TV commercial as soon as possible. ‘Tell them it’s great publicity,’ I added for safety. As I ran up the Marylebone steps a wag was heard to shout, ‘Late again Mike,’ and I waved a regal reply. Not only were they still there, but Paul asked politely, ‘Where the bloody ’ell have you been, you’re an hour late!’ ‘The train broke down,’ I suggested. ‘Have you been done?’ ‘We had to wait for you, buggerlugs . . . good job there were no other weddings on . . . Mal, give him the ring, and let’s go . . .’ or words to that effect, and Paul, Lin, diddy daughter Heather, Big Mal Evans, Peter Brown and I entered the austere room of officialdom. Not much later we emerged from the Holy Fate far less nervously than we’d entered, and kisses were swopped all round. My new sister-in-law and infant from the New World seemed just fine thank you doo doo wee wee. On the way to the limo, parked smack outside the ‘private’ ceremony, all hell was let loose—crowds crushing, media flashing and questioning and kids screaming in agony that Beatle Paul had finally fallen. We were eventually bundled into the Rolls. ‘Second today,’ thought I, ‘can’t be bad,’ as it took off at frightening speed. ‘Come to the house for a glass of champagne,’ offered brother and sis-in-law. ‘I’d love to, but I’m working,’ said I. ‘Driver, can you stop by that tube station.’ And so, in one door and out the other (Buster Keaton would have been proud) I left the happy couple as they set sail for a happy future, plus, of course, a Honeymoon Salad (‘Lettuce Alone’) and caught a taxi to the beer ad. I later found out that I wasn’t the only one working that night. Paul had to finish a recording session with Billy Kinsley and the Jackie Lomax Band!

The S2 Remix

A Mix-Up - if S2 started with the Islander’s in couples chosen by the public, what would they choose and how would it effect the rest of the show?

We go with the Bobby/MC route here for practically (and partly selfish reasons). It's easier to do so when most other characters have an established relationship/attraction. Though having read through it all now, there is a moment when Gary and Bobby could be swapped in terms of a journey depending on the MC. That's just what makes these 'what ifs' a bit harder, because you can play the game any which way.

Anyway, here's our recounting of how having the public chose the initial couples would affect the rest of the season.

So, based off of our own thoughts, and with how the public voted each Islander together, this is what we came up with for the initial coupling:

Hope/Ibrahim, Lottie/Rocco, Gary/Marisol, Noah/Hannah, Bobby/MC.

Now, to start off with, let's address the fact that both women of colour and both men of colour in the show IRL ended up in couples together while all the white people were partnered up. Ain't that something?

That is not why we paired up Hope/Ibrahim, however. Based on the bio's we'd get for each Islander, Hope would no doubt mention what she does to MC about her type: looking for someone quieter, but someone who obviously enjoys the high life and finer things. If that isn't Ibrahim, then who is it?

Hope is a woman of style and class, and for sure what Ibrahim is used to over someone like Hannah or Lottie. The woman he pursues for most of the show is Priya, and her closest counterpart is Hope, she's just way less emotionally mature when it comes to dating.

Lottie and Rocco are both free-spirited looking, the types to be down for anything (also they both look like they smoke weed, which come on...). The only point of contention is that in her intro, Lottie would have been talking a big game about loyalty, whereas Rocco would be open about his free-living lifestyle, very much coming across as exactly the type of player he is. The viewers see the potential for drama, and are counting on it.

Marisol is a posh girl, but unlike Hope or Priya, she clearly likes a bit of a hardy boy. Picture Season 3's Montana for her intro, a direct quote, "Because I've been brought up in that sort of middle-class circle, I'd quite like to meet a rough and ready boy. He might be a scaffolder from Birmingham. You never know."

Cue Gary. Working class crane operator from Chatham. He'd probably come across as sweet in his intro for the most part, but they'd play up his numbers, and let's face it, he's boasting about it, too. To the viewers at home it looks like a match made in TV Gold.

Noah and Hannah can and do boil down to shy book nerds. If all it takes is for two people to be the same colour of skin, then they're putting the two book people together, too.

So, that leaves Bobby with MC. Picture the bookies piquing those two as the winner couple before the show even begins like they did with Season 5's Amber and Tommy Fury (who never even ended up coupling up once, but it was close).

And that is how the start of day one would go. Now, we know that out of the line up of boys Noah catches Hope's eye at once, and she's not about to let something as simple as not being coupled with him stop her. The moment she lays eyes on him, her plan is to couple up no matter who her current partner ends up being.

Considering Gary/Marisol, Rocco/Lottie, and Bobby are all initially attracted to each other in the game anyways, they will spend the day trying to make it work. Marisol is the first and only one to have wavering feelings, and like her coupling with Ibrahim in the game, by the end of the first day, she's already having doubts.

Enter Priya.

Simply because she always steals MC’s man, she’s going after Bobby at first. Though she has her eye on Ibrahim and Noah just like she did in the game, too. Since Hope is coupled up with Ibrahim this time, though, she would be pretty receptive to her partner getting to know Priya this time around. Her only concern? Hannah. And if Noah would be willing to leave her high and dry.

When it comes to the steal ceremony, Priya obviously picks Bobby, leaving MC single.

Day two just confirms everyone’s initial feelings. Hope is grafting on Noah and he’s pushing Hannah/Ibrahim, especially after Priya picks Bobby. This time around, with Marisol already having figured out there’s nothing there for her with Gary, she is going to set her sights on Ibrahim. We know she’s attracted to him, because he is who she chooses to couple up with initially when the choice is in her hands. There’s an air to Marisol when it comes to competition too, and the thought that other girls are interested or potentially have a connection with him also, is going to make him more attractive in her eyes.

But who does Gary want? MC. It’s early enough for him that he’s got no issues with seeing Marisol trying to crack on with Ibrahim besides the potential blow to his pride, but it’s also the perfect excuse for him to try and get to MC.

While all of this is going on, Noah is very reciprotive of Hope’s advances. He’s a boy at the end of the day, and he likes when his ego is being stroked, and because it’s Noah, he’s delighted that he isn’t the one having to do any grafting here, Hope is coming onto him. The only thing holding him back is his potential with Hannah.

Though unlike when Hannah was coupled up with Gary, and much like when she was coupled up with Bobby, Hannah isn’t too bothered by Noah and Hope. It’s not great, but she’s going to take the opportunity opened up to her. Marisol isn’t feeling it with Gary, so he’s fair game. In the end, Hannah and Noah are happy enough to part to try different things.

Like always, though, Gary just plain is not into Hannah, and having never been coupled up with her, he has no obligations of guilt to pretend or make any effort. Marisol is openly and loudly pushing away from him to graft on Ibrahim, so he also feels no guilt or remorse there, either. That bridge is burned.

Hope isn’t letting up on the Hannah/Ibrahim push, though, as she sees the potential there, and since she’s taking Noah away, there’s a sense of responsibility in her to make sure Hannah is all right. The more Gary is indifferent, the more Hope is on Harahim to happen.

When it’s time for the recoupling, Noah is first up. He picks Hope. Rocco chooses Lottie, Bobby goes for MC, and since Gary and Ibrahim are the ones who this all pins on, they are going last. The potential for drama here means that this time, it’s Ibrahim at the end, and so Gary gets to pick first. His options are Marisol, Hannah, and Priya, and though Priya is the one Ibrahim would pick, because Gary is so dead set against either Marisol or Hannah this time, he’s picking Priya.

Ibrahim will be visibly pissed at this, and now left with Marisol, who has openly been grafting on him, or Hannah, who is good friends with his friends, and also who the people he’s closest to want him to pick. In the end, it’s a near split decision, but we went for Hannah to be Ibrahim’s choice.

And thus, Marisol is dumped.

Without Hannah being dumped, there is no reason for Lottie to corner Gary and berate him, leading to the kiss they have. Any brewing feelings she has for him stay deep within, so the drama after the slime challenge with Priya is unlikely to happen the same way. With Priya now coupled up with Gary, however much she doesn’t wish it, this will be the cause of Lottie’s vitriol, but it will be easily rectified when Priya says she never wanted to be coupled with him to begin with, and it isn’t her fault Gary stole her from under Ibrahim. She’s happy to do a straight swap with Hannah, as is Hannah, as is Ibrahim … not so much Gary.

Without Marisol present, #RoccoGate gets a new twist.

To keep numbers more even, since they’re just going to dump two guys anyway, we only added in one extra boy on day five instead of two. So, upon the arrival of Lucas, Rocco panics and goes after Hannah, who he has a lot of nice things to say about before she’s dumped in the game.

Lucas’ dates stay the same, and the mix up of Marisol and Hannah doesn’t affect them.

Lottie and Gary however, are beginning to see each other in that way, but it’s still super complicated because Hannah has had the potential to open up to other people, but since Ibrahim is now set on Priya, Lucas isn’t interested in her, the only boy who actually is into her is Rocco. She wouldn’t go there though, not if she hadn’t been betrayed, which she hasn’t at all. Gary still is not interested, and so Lottie tries to open Hannah up to trying something else, wanting to rid herself of the snake that is Rocco, and try with Gary.

Hannah being present makes all the difference; Lottie isn’t about to snake her behind her back, to her face.

It’s worse when it comes to the public vote and a boy is dumped. Rocco’s credibility is on the floor, so he’s gone.

At the next recoupling, it is customary for the new Islander to pick first. Lucas is up, and he shocks everyone by taking a risk and picking Hope. This leads to an early disaster recoupling that ends up with Noah and Priya together, Rahim and Lottie, Gary and MC, and lastly, Bobby with Hannah.

If this wasn’t drama enough, Operation Nope becomes Operation Garcy (Gary/MC). Will be referred to as OG from here on out.

Bobby is still half behind it, plotting with Lottie this time around. “Hey, wouldn’t it be so funny if you kissed Gary to see if he’s as loyal as he claims he’d be to MC? Heh-heh, just kidding … unless?”

Lottie doesn’t just take the bait, she relishes in it. To make things easier on them both, they recruit Hannah into the mix as well. For Lottie, it makes her not come off as bad and like she’s not trying to snake Gary from Hannah (nevermind that she's snaking him from MC), and for Bobby, it’s another attempt at Gary potentially looking bad.

Gary kisses Lottie, but not Hannah, like how Noah kisses MC, but not Priya. This unravels and everything gets revealed as being a game. Gary is pissed he’s been played like this and MC is upset that Bobby would let her be messed around like that.

This leads to the official break-up of Bobby and MC, because even though they were no longer in a couple, it hadn’t been the end of them. Now it is.

The fight leads to MC and Noah getting close and instead, they kiss. Noah likes Priya fine enough, but Hope is his number one, but seeing her open to getting to know Lucas has his head in a spin, so his loyalties to whichever girl are all over the place, and MC is hurt and confused over everything else going on. Needless to say, it’s complicated, too complicated, so they decide they’d be better off letting it drop for now until things calm down.

The news doesn’t keep quiet after two new bombshells enter at the Ministry of Sounds party. Enter Chelsea and Henrik. The secret kiss between MC and Noah comes out after Chelsea blabs about it infront of everyone. The chain reaction of this leads to nearly everyone having some reason or another to be upset at someone else.

Priya and Hope because they feel betrayed by the kiss, Lucas because he doesn’t want Hope upset, and Ibrahim because why would Noah steal Priya if he was just going to turn around and kiss MC straight away anyway? Bobby is upset because Feelings, and Gary is upset because Feelings and also, after the drama MC had at him with the OG kiss, he feels stung. Lottie and Hannah also get in on the action after being targeted for their involvement in OG, saying it’s unfair for them to have been bashed when MC then went off and kissed Noah willingly, behind everyone else’s back. Henrik is just vibing.

Going into the other Islanders before the next recoupling, Lottie is still only interested in Gary. Ibrahim has still been grafting on Priya, even though she’s now with Noah, and even though they haven’t technically ever been couples up. Since the kiss between MC and Noah, Hope is leaning more towards Lucas, Noah is as confused as ever, Bobby is pining after MC still, Gary’s head is in a pickle, and Hannh is more lost than a blind man in a warzone.

Onto recoupling.

Established already, new Islander’s get first choice. Henrik picks MC with no warning, and Chelsea picks Lucas with no warning. This leads to Rahim and Priya finally coupling up for the first time, Gary and Lottie coupling up for the first time, Noah and Hope getting back together, and Bobby and Hannah being stuck in a friendship couple again.

If things couldn’t get messier, it’s time for the girls to leave for Casa Amor.

Going into Casa this time, Hannah is in Marisol’s shoes, being the most open and eligible girls there. You know what that means? Enter Graham. Realistically though, that’s not a catch.

Before we get into the meat of Casa, let’s talk about how the girls are feeling in their couples, like a mini therapy session around the firepit. Hope, you’re up.

Confused. She likes Noah and she likes Lucas, but she’s been hurt by Noah and Lucas is now coupled up with someone else. She doesn’t know where she’s standing with either boy.

Lottie? There’s no chance her head is turning, she’s waited for this moment for too long.

MC? Crying, please don’t ask.

Priya? Things are open, since they didn’t work out with Noah and things are only just beginning to happen with Rahim now that they’re finally coupled up, things are very, very much open.

Chelsea? Girl is here for a fun time.

Hannah? There is no messing around anymore. She came in for love and for her Prince Charming, but all she’s been getting is pies and frogs. This is where it’s changing for her and she’s going to come out with a new man even if she has to reinvent herself to do so.

As for the Casa Boys: Elijah is grafting on Chelsea openly, and she is reciprocating hard, but on the sly? He’s also grafting Hannah. She likes him, but it’s clear she’s his second choice for now. Arjun is still on MC, and though she’s not shutting it down, she’s not opening up much either. Hope is open to Carl, and is just happy to have something that's clear, though now that she’s got two new guys grafting on her and some space from Lucas and Noah, she’s beginning to see where her heart might already be.

Despite all of her fun, Chelsea is Chelsea and though she was messing around with Elijah, she decides to not switch to him, sticking with Lucas. ‘Loyal’, she would call it. MC, Priya, and Lottie all stick to their original partners, but Hope decides to try something new, ands he switches from Noah to Carl.

And to the shock of the others, and horror of Chelsea, Hannah picks last and she picks violence. She switches to Elijah.

The ceremony back in the Villa reveals that Gary also stuck, Lucas stuck, Bobby stuck, and Noah stuck. Rahim switched to Shannon and Henrik switched to Blake.

The couplings stand at Gary/Lottie, Lucas/Chelsea, Henrik/Blake, Carl/Hope, Ibrahim/Shannon, Elijah/Hannah, and the singletons this time are Priya, Noah, MC, and Bobby.

Shockingly, this means Gary and Lottie are the current strongest couple. Hope recoupling with Carl shakes Lucas enough that he’s more willing to see things through with Chelsea, or try something new entirely … hey, MC’s been having a tough time of it, and she’s single. Priya is the same, scouting for her potential next match. Does she try it with Noah again? With Ibrahim? Or someone new? Lucas is there, and she hasn’t really been given a chance to get to know Henrik or Elijah.

Before much can happen with that, the public votes are in. The least favourite couples are Lucas/Chels, Henrik/Blake and Hannah/Elijah. It’s up to the single Islander’s to save them.

MC is first and saves Lucas, Noah saves Hannah, Priya goes for Elijah, and Bobby saves Chelsea, leaving Henrik and Blake to be dumped.

Lucas is happy in his new couple, having heard a lot about what Chelsea got up to in Casa Amor behind his back. MC is the one he sees the most potential with, and so he’s happy to graft to stay in this current couple. Chelsea is happy because she gets to stay for longer, but it’s just a friendship couple between her and Bobby, and since Lucas is no longer interested in her, she goes back to … Elijah.

Priya is left feeling like she can’t catch a break, and Bobby tries to mend things with MC because no one else has come close to making him feel the way he did when he was with her. He’s already apologised, but he’s laying it all out again here.

Enter cursed bombshells, Jakub and Jo. On their dates, Jo picks Rahim and Bobby, while 

Jakub goes for Hannah and Hope. Hannah’s ‘spicer’ side has been given a boost with the OG situation, and then her drama by bringing back Elijah (even if he immediately dumped her the moment Chelsea came back around). 

Onto the next recoupling, and we have Jakub picking Hannah, Jo picking Rahim, MC picking Bobby, Chelsea picking Elijah, Lottie picking Gary, Priya picking Noah, Hope picking Lucas, and Shannon choosing Carl.

That’s a lot of Islander you may think. Yeah, so Carl and Shannon get dumped almost straight after. Still, so many couples, time to knock another couple off in the same go. Who are the next two couples with the least votes? Jakub/Hannah and Chelsea/Elijah.

The Islander’s have to vote who to save based on who they think makes a stronger couple. In the end, it’s Chelsea and Elijah who are saved, leaving Jakub and Hannah with the news that they’ve been dumped … or have they?

The plot thickens. They can choose to go as a couple or come back single and never recouple with each other again. Gee, just what are they going to decide?

They shock no one and decide to return to the Villa single, but before they do, they’ve got some dating to do. They each have a date with two Islanders, cue some old faces, as Hannah is reunited with Rocco and then Henrik for a date, while Jakub meets Marisol, and we’re introduced to Elisa for the first time.

All the while, on the outside world, Marisol and Rocco have been hooking up, in the cardinal sense. When they enter the Villa, they know they’re there for bigger things than what they can find in each other’s arms (or between their legs, most accurately).

So, Rocco, free of Lottie and knowing Hannah is too, cracks on with Hannah. She’s more receptive this time, and after all, no one else is really pursuing her at this point.

It’s time for a Gossip Sneeze, and Elisa tells Chelsea about the Rocco/Marisol rumours on the outside, to which Chelsea ends up spilling out to everyone, just in time for -

BEACH DAY!

The most important part of Beach Day, of course, was the Spice Girls assignments, so Ginger - Priya/Hannah, Baby - MC/Chelsea, Posh - Hope/Elisa, Scary - Lottie/Marisol, and Sporty - Jo.

Too many Islanders means a dumping is brewing. Say goodbye again Marisol and Rocco, and just goodbye Elisa and Jakub.

The same night there’s a surprise recoupling, and it goes Bobby/MC, Gary/Lottie, Lucas/Hope, Noah/Priya, Rahim/Jo, Henrik/Hannah and Elijah/Chelsea.

This seems to be the most settled everyone’s been, and there’s not much upset, though there are still a few pining glances being thrown at the backs of people’s heads.

At the next dumping, Rahim/Jo and Elijah/Chelsea are all dumped by the public.

After the prom, the final two couples at risk are Gary/Lottie and Hannah/Henrik, and it’s up to the other Islanders to pick who stays and who goes. If they’re strategic, they’d vote to dump Gary and Lottie, but if they’re going on longevity, they’d vote to save them instead. Either way, whichever couple is saved, they only come in fourth place at the final.

Third we get Noah/Priya. The public can see Noah’s head is turned for MC, and he isn’t giving Priya his all.

Second place is Lucas/Hope, who are keen to make a go of it again, and when they’re together, they’re strong, loyal, and committed.

First place is obviously MC, and here she is with Bobby.

I love how people act as though history started like 5 years ago.

Meanwhile, for a lot of us Derry Girls was a reality not a fiction. There was always something going on in the background on the news. The UK and Ireland weren’t allowed to host anything for fear of terrorist attacks. I think it was during this time Manchester or Birmingham had a failed bid for the Olympics, no football tournament was coming here, some artists didn’t want to play the UK or Ireland and even things like hosting Eurovision, well let’s just put it this way, we weren’t that disappointed to keep finishing second. When we hosting in 1998 it purposely wasn’t in the capital and the security was insane (frogman searching the canal for devices). Major annual events like the Grand National being cancelled due to a bomb threats. It was a grim reality you accepted.

I had a school trip nearly cancelled due to the Docklands bombing and I find the Post Box in Manchester marking the spot of the Arndale bombing creepy as, because it’s etched into my brain walking round there not long after. It was horrid seeing business that had survived trying to carry on, against a back drop of scaffolding and roads closed off with yellow tape.

Given I live in Wales, imagine being in the location of all the terror attacks in 2017 two weeks earlier. The odds are slim.

The point is, when I say things, I’m not being mean. As someone who has lived through being in a country deemed “unsafe” it’s really difficult to accept. Now I try and go to everything, as growing up, it was unthinkable these things would happen in my country.

However there are a lot of places right now in the world you have to say, is it the right thing to unnecessarily take people into an area of conflict? Just as was once asked of the UK and Ireland.
