MVAC is better equipped to identify archaeological bison bones, thanks to a generous donation from long-time MVAC friend Dan Maas, who raises bison. Dan gave us a bison that died unexpectedly, as well as some additional bones. Modern comparative materials are important for accurately identifying archaeological bones. We'll be processing these bison bones and adding them to our comparative collection.  Bones pictured: front, right mandible (lower jaw); center, atlas vertebra; right center, right calcaneus from lower rear leg; background, left humerus from upper front leg.
Video with more information about comparative/reference collections.

*as a wip, there are are a lot of tags i haven’t entered here yet. try the animal name of your choice and add “bones”.
*there are a lots of place names and dates in the tags. try a year, a country, a city, a museum.
*there is no ai on this blog. any misinformation (for example, misidentified bones or artistic interpretations of animals in antique bestiaries) are the mistakes of humans, not machines.
*out of respect, the original tw/cw of op’s are in the tags. but please be aware, they are not my tagging system. if you wish to filter sensitive material on this blog, the tags to filter are “dead” and “remains”. i don’t post images that i perceive as gore for the sake of gore, but you and i may perceive these things differently.
*i do not support the sale or purchase of human or bat bones or parts. this blog does include museum/memorial/medical/historical/educational/antique/etc (human) and museum/antique/second hand/etc (bat) images. to filter this content use the tags “human” “human bones” “bat” “bat bones”

Thought I’d seen the last of the giants for a while…then this guy rolled in.
This beast is a bull Bison, and he’s twice as large as the cow bison I did a while back.
And, yes, that is the same buck I used for a size comparison last time, just so you can see just HOW much bigger this monster is.

I have spent the last few weeks thinking I'm horrible at zooarchaeology and it turns out I'm ahead of all the other undergrads. I just happen to share lab slots with grad students almost exclusively so I assumed everyone was as good as them except me.

Tried wire wrapping for the first time. Think they turned out neat! These aren’t for sale but have other stuff you can buy on my Etsy.
Anyway, I would love any tips on wire wrapping and an id on the individual vertabra. I’m pretty sure the lumbar spine is from a squirrel but if someone knows more I would appreciate it.

Zuppa Toscana With Heritage Pork Sausage & Wild Boar Bacon
Zuppa toscana is a traditional Italian soup originating in Tuscany. It’s really easy to make and full of flavor with a little kick (if you desire) from crushed red pepper. Our heritage pork mild Italian sausage was practically made for this recipe, and it’s a match made in heaven with our wild boar bacon. This flavorful soup is delicious, creamy and satisfying with thinly sliced potatoes and chopped kale. It’s a real crowd pleaser and perfect for soaking up with breadsticks.
Ingredients:
🍴 1 lb heritage pork mild Italian sausage 🍴 Crushed red pepper 🍴 5 slices wild boar bacon, roughly chopped 🍴 1 large onion, diced 🍴 3 cloves of garlic, minced 🍴 Sea salt to taste 🍴 8 ½ cups bison bone broth 🍴 6 red potatoes, sliced thin 🍴 1 cup cream 🍴 2 cups chopped kale (stems removed). https://bit.ly/3pkPvI2

BISON PELVIS!! due to the surroundings (gold eagle nest, wolf pack, local grizz) we figured an eagle carried it away once a larger predator had its fill, since there was a wolf pack across the hill and a golden eagle nest up a cliff ~500 feet away

I'm currently writing the History chapter of my book, Carcass: The Afterlives of Animal Bodies. Living in Wyoming and being obsessed with animals I am, of course, aware that European settlers came and killed off the vast majority of the bison. At first for food, in huge numbers for pelts, and at some points just for sport, their tongues, to clear the way for the railroad, or to starve the Native Americans.
But did you know that people collected and sold the bones afterwards? In fact, people made more money on buffalo bones than they ever did on pelts. They sold the bones to companies who made them into fertilizer, bone char, etc.
Pictures collected here by the State Historical Society of North Dakota. Read that for further information too.

Here she is, all done up!
For those wondering, she’s an American Bison! The biggest euro I’ve done yet.
Did you know that bison cow horns typically curve inward towards each other, while bull’s tend to point skyward?
