Soulmates [Winter AU]
I had this idea for the winter au week last month but didn't really have time to finish it nowhere near the proper date xD the prompt that inspired it was "Soulmates". So, no matter their differences and time spent apart they are always meant to be together :3

Courting an alpha
“Did you hear that Bakugou Katsuki is courting someone?”
The question hits Izuku like lightning, shocking his fingers and causing the needle he’s got pinched in them to fall. He slowly bends to retrieve it from the ground, listening intently to the conversation next to him.
“He is? How do you know?” asks Uraraka, casually peering in his direction. Their eyes meet for a moment and he knows his closest friend will get to the bottom of things.
“He’s preparing a gift!” Ashido informs her excitedly. “It’s supposed to be personal, too. He must really like the omega.”
Izuku locates the needle and sits up, a frown marring his features. It’s nothing compared to what he’s feeling, just a mask settling into place. The real pain is happening in his chest. His heart aches like Katsuki has reached in, wrapped his fingers around it, and squeezed.
“A-ah! I wasn’t aware he had his eye on anyone!” Uraraka exclaims. “Are you sure?!”
“Trust me, it’s happening.” Ashido grins and shoots her a wink. “He traded a few rabbits and got some quality nest materials. You know how serious it is if he’s picking out that sort of thing for an omega.”
Izuku vaguely acknowledges Uraraka’s sympathetic look. The back of his neck is hot and the flush is quickly spreading to his face—he hates this feeling, like he’s slowly burning from the inside out, embarrassment mixing with crippling disappointment.
“Every alpha is so different,” Chiyo declares from where she’s sitting on the other side of the room. “My mate wove me a crown of flowers.”
Ashido sighs. “That sounds lovely!”
“He certainly took the easy road,” Chiyo comments dryly. “Buying nest materials is a sign of a more doting alpha. If only mine had been so thoughtful…”
“How about you, Midoriya? You’re an alpha.” Ashido leans towards him, her eyebrows wiggling conspiratorially. “Are you working on a courting gift for someone?”
He looks down to where Katsuki’s red scarf lays in his lap. It’s the blond’s favorite, and Izuku has spent the last few hours trying to mend a tear. Laughing quietly, he wonders if that’s not exactly what he’s been doing—preparing courting gifts. His scarf, his jacket, his old pair of boots… Izuku has been taking care of Katsuki for years.
Shaking his head, he replies softly, “I don’t have an omega I’m interested in.”
They change targets after that, interrogating Kirishima who’s been trying his best to turn invisible. Izuku’s too distracted to focus, his thoughts occupied with a certain blonde-haired alpha and his potential mate.
He knew this was going to happen eventually. Alphas and omegas courted, married and produced children. And while he could do the same with someone else—or even a beta—the only person Izuku has ever wanted was Katsuki. Now it’s time for him to face the truth, however bitter.
Without excusing himself, Izuku puts on his gloves and stumbles out of the tent and into the white expanse of snow. It’s cold today, but clear. The top layer of snow is frozen and his boots crunch loudly as he treads through it. After a few minutes, he spots Katsuki where he always is this time of day: near the horses, checking them over.
With as much noise as he’s making, Izuku can’t go for stealth even if he wanted to, but when those familiar reds flick to him, suddenly he wishes he could hide.
“What are you up to?” Katsuki asks, eyes immediately narrowing in suspicion.
Understanding Izuku has always come easily to him… though Izuku is doing a poor job of hiding his distress right now. Anyone could figure out that something is troubling him. He’s lucky his pheromones can’t escape the thick layers he has on or there’d be no pretending at all.
He has an important question for Katsuki, one that will change both of their lives forever. But he doesn’t know how to ask the other alpha if he’s decided to court someone.
“Just checking on you,” he answers instead, worrying his lower lip with his teeth. Hand shaking, Izuku offers him the scarf he just finished repairing. “Here you go.”
Without hesitation, Katsuki bends to expose his neck. A full three seconds pass where Izuku stares at him in confusion, his pulse leaping.
“Hands are full. Put it on for me,” Katsuki demands.
Dragging his eyes from the spot where Katsuki’s mate will mark him someday, Izuku carefully places the scarf on him, mourning how his gloves make it impossible to feel the other man’s skin.
This might be his last chance to do so if the rumors are true.
“Um… Kacchan.”
“What is it?” The blonde straightens, gaze sharp.
The question sits heavy on his tongue. He’s reluctant to ask because he doesn't want to hear the answer. Once he does that’ll mean the end—no more stolen kisses while out riding, no more sneaking into each other’s tents at night, no more quiet mornings together before the rest of the village wakes… Izuku knows that once Katsuki takes a mate, their love affair is over.
And yet, Izuku didn’t run away when he heard the rumor. No, he went to find Katsuki immediately, determined to get an answer from him. Because even if knowing the truth will hurt, it’s better than pretending.
Izuku is no coward.
“Why are you upset?” Katsuki presses when the silence lasts a little too long. Then he cups Izuku’s face in his hands, squeezing his cheeks affectionately.
Izuku blurts it out. “Are you courting someone?”
“What the hell—”
“Ashido said that you traded for some quality fabric, and that you were preparing a gift, and that you were getting ready to court someone, and…” Izuku rushes it all out in one breath. Inhaling sharply, he braces himself. “Kacchan, is any of that true? Are you looking for a mate?”
Usually when Izuku starts mumbling, Katsuki is the first to tell him to knock it off. For once, he remains quiet. It’s as close to a ‘yes’ as Izuku can expect.
“You are…” The words come out strangled, the rest of that thought dying. Izuku’s worst fears have been confirmed with just a look—Katsuki’s mouth hardens into a firm line, a grim furrow pinching his brow.
“You weren’t supposed to know,” he states, expression darkening.
And that’s all it takes for Izuku’s vision to blur with tears.
“Oi! What the—what are you doing? Why are you crying?!” Katsuki is near frantic as he tilts Izuku’s face up to see him better. The sunlight dazzles his eyes as it hits it, and Katsuki quickly shifts to block the rays.
“Who are they? Who’s the o-omega?” Izuku gasps, his stutter from his childhood slipping out. He could care less about it. All he wants to know is who’s managed to capture Katsuki’s attention after Izuku has held it for so long. “Who’s so s-special that you’ll buy them n-nesting materials?”
“Nesting materials? Omega? What are you—?!” Katsuki is upset too, and it takes him a few seconds to figure it out. When he does, Izuku can feel it. His grip on Izuku’s cheeks slacken. “Idiot, those things are for you!”
“Me?” It comes out incredulous. “Why would I need anything like that? I can’t make a nest…”
“It’s not—for god’s sake!” Katsuki releases him and digs into the front of his cloak. A moment later, he pulls out a thick cap, lined with sheep’s wool. Unceremoniously, he places it on Izuku’s head. “It was for this.”
Izuku touches the cap hesitantly. It’s warm and soft. “What… what’s this, Kacchan?”
He’s confused—not about the object or its purpose. He’s confused about what it means when Katsuki gives it to him. Because it sounds almost like—
“It’s not done yet, I’ve been having a time keeping that lining sewn in.” Katsuki grins at him. “It’s a courting gift, dummy. For you.”
Izuku touches it, staring at him. “But we’re both alphas. You’re supposed to find an omega… or a beta. Anyone but another alpha.”
“Yeah, we’re both alphas.” Katsuki knocks their foreheads together gently. “And we’re future mates. If you’ll have me.”
Izuku’s world is flipping on its head, shifting under his feet and leaving him unsure of where he’s standing. But as he clings to Katsuki, it finally rights itself. He reaches to Katsuki’s hands, lacing their fingers together.
“Of course I’ll have you.” Izuku breathes. “We’ll be together for the rest of our lives.”
And so a courtship that had begun the first time they laid eyes on each other—and all the years of sharing gifts and affection in between—finally becomes official.

When asked this question in the past, my answer was maybe but probably not. However, at this point, I find it hard to believe Horikoshi hasn’t been planning on pairing Izuku and Katsuki for years, if not since the beginning of the manga. At the very least, there are major plot holes if Izuku doesn’t have romantic feelings for Katsuki. If Horikoshi isn’t planning on at least that much, he has written himself into a corner.
While there are many reasons, the biggest at this point is how Katsuki has served as Izuku’s trigger and Izuku’s response to that. While we have seen Izuku triggered several times now, specifically when he manifested Blackwhip he was told point blank why it happened. After being taunted by Neito (who insulted Katsuki on Hitoshi’s recommendation) Izuku manifested Blackwhip and lost control of it. He had to be brainwashed and ended up in the Vestige mindscape where the former Blackwhip user, Daigoro told him that it was responding to his emotions and that he needed to control his heart.
However, when he discussed it with Toshinori and Katsuki (chapter 217,) Izuku lied to them and told them he had no idea what could have triggered it, even going so far as to suggest that it may have been some external catalyst.
When you look at the other times Izuku has been triggered, the common factor pretty much always comes back to Katsuki. He saw Katsuki was the student the Sludge Villain had taken. He heard Katsuki was being targeted during the summer training camp and then watched as Katsuki was taken. He manifested Danger Sense when Katsuki took a hit for him and went absolutely feral on Shigaraki who, after impaling Katsuki, said his sacrifice was pointless. (Sharing images from that last one because, quite frankly, Izuku breaking the Rivet Stab blade with his teeth is freaking awesome.)
Again and again, it’s always Katsuki who sets Izuku off, and though being his trigger alone isn’t enough to prove that Izuku feelings towards Katsuki are romantic, the fact that he lied about it does. Izuku has never made secret how much he admires Katsuki. He has been laying on the praise since the very start of the series, both to others and to Katsuki. Moreover, at this point, most of the people in his life think he’s completely selfless and would sacrifice himself to save anyone. Heck, that’s why Toshinori chose him as his successor in the first place. All Izuku had to say in there was that he was upset over Neito insulting Katsuki, no further explanation needed. No one would have been surprised.
I’ve seen it suggested that Izuku didn’t want to upset Katsuki by bringing up the specific insult (that being that Katsuki had ended All Might,) but even that doesn’t really track. If it was only Katsuki he wanted kept in the dark, he would have told Toshinori later, “Hey, this is what actually happened, but I didn’t want to remind Kacchan…” In fact, that would have been the smart thing to do even if it wasn’t true, because then Toshinori, the only teacher he had at that point who knew about One For All, would know that Katsuki was his weak point. But Izuku lied to them and never offered either an explanation as to why.
In fact, around this same time, we started getting less and less of Izuku’s narration and thoughts. When the manga began, Izuku narrated a lot and we got into his head a lot. We were always getting his thoughts both in the moment and retroactively through narration. Now, we get almost nothing. We’ve had narration from Katsuki and Ochako, but Izuku’s internal perspective has been largely kept from us for quite some time. The only reason an author makes a switch like that is because whatever the character is thinking/feeling would spoil the story. The only thing that really makes sense with the pieces Horikoshi has played is for Izuku to have romantic feelings towards Katsuki.
Horikoshi’s writing thus far demonstrates a lot of careful planning and patience. He plays the long game with tons of foreshadowing, set up, and build up. Given how he’s handled other lengthy plotlines, I cannot imagine him leaving this massive plot hole. I can’t even imagine him having stumbled into it either. He’s not the sort of writer to write himself into a corner. Until proven otherwise, I have to believe this has all been intentional, and you don’t set up your protagonist like that in as hopeful a story as MHA is, only to have it fizzle out either. While there is plenty of evidence that Katsuki reciprocates Izuku’s feelings, the tone and themes of the story alone suggest the protagonist is getting a complete happy ending. In all likelihood, he’ll “defeat” AFO, he’ll “save” Tenko, and he’ll find out that the person he’s in love with feels the same.
And that’s all without touching on the dozens of additional romantic tropes Izuku and Katsuki have been written with, many of Izuku’s other telling behaviors, how the other characters respond to them, or any of the evidence as to Katsuki’s feelings for Izuku. Personally, I still don’t want to get my hopes up, because I’ve seen writers set everything up beautifully only to either lose their nerve along the way or for their publisher/network/producer/etc… to step in and force a change. However, at this point, I feel it’s impossible not to have at least a little hope that this has been the plan all along because if it is, this is one of the best written stories I’ve ever enjoyed.
Edited to add: With the latest volume release, I am now wholly convinced Horikoshi plans on Izuku and Katsuki as the endgame ship for the series. Volume 37 saw its Japanese release last month (Jan ‘23) and with it brought the biggest piece of evidence for the ship (ironically enough, rooted in Katsuki’s death.) During the volume, Katsuki dies fighting Shigaraki and the heroes remaining on the field work together to bring him back and hold off Shigaraki while Izuku continues to return to the fight. Specifically, Edgeshot is using his quirk and his own body to repair/replace Katsuki’s heart.
On the back cover of this volume is a message from Edgeshot telling Katsuki not to give up, that the guy he’s waiting for, Deku is on the way, and that he (Edgeshot) won’t let him die. While the whole message is quite romantic, it ends with “Connect yourself to your future where you dreamed of your ideal.” (Point of interest, “connect” in this sentence is Tsunaide, the same word used in Izuku’s description of a boyfriend during Himiko’s confession, and the same root for Best Jeanist’s name Tsunagu.)
Then, when you flip open the volume, this image is the title of the table of contents:
Here you see Edgeshot’s head and his body stretched out to spell the word “contents”. The end of his thread is wrapped around Izuku.
While the message and image are already very romantic, it takes on an additional level of symbolism when you consider the color of Edgeshot’s quirk: red. The Red Thread of Fate, also known as the Red Thread of Marriage is one of, if not the biggest and most explicit romance tropes in east Asia. Based on Chinese mythology, the belief is that Yue Lao (a god in charge of marriage and matchmaking) ties together soulmates with an invisible red thread. That thread then compels the two people together so they can find their true love.
The myths surrounding the red thread are ubiquitous in Japan and east Asia. There is no way Horikoshi is unaware of them and just so happened to include this imagery and language by accident. At this point, the only way I could see them not being confirmed canon by the end of the series, would be if Shonen Jump refused to published Horikoshi’s intended ending.

Snowbound
When Katsuki woke up, he knew he was in trouble. And it wasn’t because he’d slept in, or because he’d let the fire nearly go out. It was because of who was nestled in his arms.
Soft curls brushed against his skin, tickling where they touched. Warm breath puffed along his neck, slow and even. From the relaxed weight of the other in his arms, he could tell that Izuku was in a deep sleep, likely dreaming.
…Unlike Katsuki, who was panicking, wondering if this wasn’t some sort of nightmare.
It wasn’t that he hadn’t imagined this exact moment before. Fantasized about it even, whenever he met a pair of sparkling, green eyes. The problem was—as far as he knew, his feelings only ran one way. Izuku saw him as a rival and nothing more.
In his youth, Katsuki had hidden his budding affection as best he could, using his short temper and gruff personality to push the other away. Of course, it had only worked for a time. Izuku might appear as pure as fresh snow and as sweet as honeyed tea, but beneath the surface he was the same as Katsuki—mulishly stubborn.
He was also always present, determined to never leave him alone.
It was difficult to avoid someone who refused to leave his side. Made it harder to banish him when all Katsuki wanted to do was pull him closer.
A few days ago, the tribe leader had asked him to travel to a nearby encampment. The nomadic groups that wandered the area were bedding down for winter, setting up more permanent homes until the coldest days passed. Now was the time to trade, before the snow moved in and blocked all routes.
Of course, Izuku had insisted that he come along.
The first day had passed with only a few minor scuffles—Izuku wanted to lead them. Katsuki informed him that wasn’t going to happen. They argued about the best path to take and where to stop for the night. Izuku even told him that /he’d/ hunt for rabbits, despite Katsuki having more skill with a bow.
Things between them were what Katsuki would consider “typical”. The only tricky part was trying to keep his palms from sweating every time Izuku got too close to him. It was easier to manage these types of embarrassing reactions when the rest of the tribe was around them. Now they were alone. Just the two of them.
The second day proved to be a disaster, or at least it ended in one. The color of the sky had told them to expect a cold, wet day—but they hadn’t been prepared for the snow to pile up and block their tent completely.
They spent the entire day in that enclosed space. An entire day with Izuku smiling at him. An entire day of endless chatter in that sweet, lilting voice. An entire day watching helplessly as he shivered from the cold.
That last detail was annoying enough that Katsuki offered to share the bedroll—just to stay warm. He was sick to death of seeing the other shake.
And apparently, Katsuki should /not/ have left the fire to Izuku. Because sometime during the night it’d dwindled to a few sparks. The space that Katsuki had carefully maintained between them while they slept had vanished.
Now the object of his desire was tightly snuggled against him.
Before the other man woke up, Katsuki needed to move. He had to create some distance between them, so that he could pretend like nothing had happened.
…But when would another opportunity like this arise? Careful not to jostle him, Katsuki bent to examine the other’s face. Izuku seemed well and truly asleep. Maybe he could sneak in a few more minutes, just like this.
Tucking Izuku back against his neck, he matched the tempo of his deep breathing, allowing his eyes to fall closed.
He woke some time later to the soft whisper of his name. “Kacchan?”
It was somehow the most endearing sound he’d ever heard as well as the most terrifying.
In his moment of blind panic, Katsuki could only think of one thing to do—fake like he was still asleep and pray Izuku left first. Keeping his eyes firmly shut, Katsuki waited for the warm body in his arms to slip away.
He was not prepared for Izuku to snuggle closer, burying his nose against the side of his neck and sighing happily.
They remained like that for a few minutes, huddled together. Katsuki swore his heart had never beat more rapidly in his life.
“Kacchan…”
Katsuki had to repress a shudder as warm breath ghosted along his skin. He had no idea what Izuku was up to, he just knew the other man was making it very difficult to feign sleep.
“…I know you’re awake,” Izuku hummed softly. “You’ve been awake for the past few minutes.”
“How do you know that?” Katsuki grumbled, demanding. That was his intent at least, but the question came out a bit strangled.
“You stopped snoring.”
Katsuki felt his cheeks burn. “You let the fire die. How else was I supposed to keep warm?”
“What about now?” Izuku wondered, pulling back far enough to squint at him. Under his intense scrutiny, Katsuki’s flush darkened even more. “You could leave now, if you wanted. We’re both awake.”
Katsuki’s pulse thrummed. As he started to pull away, Izuku stopped him, squeezing the arms wrapped around him tighter.
“It’s going to be a long day. Nowhere to go until the snow melts. If you were wondering… I don’t mind what we’re doing, Kacchan.” Now Izuku was the one with color in his cheeks. “I don’t mind this… you and me.”
It was as close to a confession as Katsuki could hope for.
“You’re right about one thing: we have a long day ahead of us.” Katsuki smirked, though his thoughts raced joyously in his head, his heart dancing in his chest. “Let’s spend the rest of it like this.”
