Prejudice and racism are learned behaviors; therefore they can be unlearned. Each of us can learn to make a regular practice of pointing out inequitable treatment and bias that we witness, whether it is the perpetuation of stereotypes, prejudiced jokes or unfair practices. Speaking up can be a powerful form of allyship for marginalized communities. If you hear your friends or family making off-color jokes, let them know that what they said was not appropriate. Research suggests that we are more likely to trust the opinions of our friends and family when it comes to many topics. Speaking up when you witness prejudiced behavior from those closest to you can be an instrumental catalyst to changing behavior. ✊🏾😌 PS.
