Part 2: Prom Night • “Being stood up could hardly be the worst of them. In fact in a kind of sneaking, wishful way she thought it might be for the best if – . . . "No. Oh dear God, please no. (please let it be a happy ending)” • I really wished for Carrie to have her happy ending. In every re-read or every re-watch of the screen adaptations, I want to just stop for a moment in that scene before the blood bath and rewrite an alternate end for my severely misunderstood telekinetic. I mean, even in the books, several times did the whole thing almost never happened. There were moments of Chris Hargensen's conscience nagging at her, moments when people at the prom actually though Carrie's glow-up looked great; we could even go back to the Day of the Stones. Had Estelle Horan and her mother done something to save the little girl, none of the horrors would have happened. But this is just me, dwelling on a fictional past to process this fictional tragedy. And I guess this is the biggest tragedy of Carrie, bigger than Black Prom dare I say. That all of it would've been avoided, if people had been more perceptive, more kind, and reached out to the problematic girl who would've grown into an amazing, brave woman, if she had been treated even a smidge better than she had. If she had been given a chance. • “When the buckets fell, she was at first only aware of a loud, metallic clang cutting through the music, and then she was deluged in warmth and wetness. She closed her eyes instinctively. There was a grunt beside her, and in the part of her mind that had come so recently awake, she sensed brief pain. . . . Part 1: Blood Sport • "In the wake of two hundred deaths and the destruction of an entire town, it is so easy to forget one thing: We were kids. We were kids. We were kids trying to do our best. . . " • I first read the book in 2014 after years of avoiding it, bec it was horror. I have seen the OG movie in highschool, though, and have been fascinated by it ever since. What with telekinesis, and highschool and bullies getting back what they've been giving (albeit in the most gruesome and most severe way). And I'm so glad the book wasn't as scary as I made it out to be. It is, as the very core of it, a sad tale of an oestracized teen that had grown up with a mentally ill parent, and almost - ALMOST! - had the happiest highlight of her entire life only to become the worst tragedy of the entire town of Chamberlain. It's one of my favorite books bec the writing style (mixing the narrative with pseudo-news clippings, fictional Sue Snell autobiography, etc. ) is unique and even before I consciously decided to start writing my own stories, I recognized it as a difficult thing to pull off. But of course, Stephen King manages to perfectly capture the layers of this story's grief, terror, disbelief. This is one of those books that age well, (even though I must note I didn't exactly get why there were a lot of descriptions regarding women's breasts) and this is the fourth re-read in my life, and still it manages to catch my breath. Whether in the beauty of Carrie's seeming redemption as she was walking to Prom, or at the destruction she single-handedly brought to everyone, especially her mother. • "I don't want to fight with you, Momma," Carrie said . . . "I only want to be let to live my own life, I . . .
