THT Tokens Part 2 - Love Tokens
Last time I spoke about vengeance tokens, this time we’re going to take a little look at love tokens….gather round Osblainer’s, this ones for you.
Tumblr media
We know that tokens are personal objects, one gifted or collected, generally nostalgic in sentiment. Well recently June seems to be rocking a new piece of jewellery; a mysterious necklace and I have to say I’m dead curious as to where she got this. I might have passed it off as a harmless trinket, however scenes that specifically showed her putting it on and holding it, were closely followed by her either seeing or hearing about Nick and Hannah. In Ballet June is seen putting the necklace on before going out and shortly thereafter Nick and Hannah appear on the television.
Tumblr media
In Ep 5 09 she clutches it screaming at Lawrence, when he tempts her with Nick and Hannah. Shortly thereafter Tuello arranges a meeting between Nick and June.
Tumblr media
The only time I recall anything remotely like a necklace is in S1 when June take Nicks off the first night they are together, and in Jezebels when he wakes to find her rummaging through his things in an attempt to learn more about him.
Tumblr media
June clings to this necklace like it’s a lifeline when she has her run in with Lawrence, its a token from which she draws support, so where did it come from? Or rather from whom? Necklaces are traditionally intended as a memento to remind that individual of the gift givers constant affection so what’s going on with this trinket?
Tumblr media
Hollys doll is a love token. As I’ve mentioned before, tokens embody an individuals soul, acting almost like a conduit. Hollys doll acts as a conduit for Nicks love for his daughter and as a symbol of his fatherhood and protection but its so much more than this. it reminds both Nick and June of their hope for a family and their love for each other. In S4 Ep 9 when Nick first gives Holly the doll he says “I thought she might like to keep this with her”……..”My beautiful girl” (I’m not crying, you’re crying) it’s a request for his daughter and for June to keep his love in their hearts. The act of bringing a toy for his daughter speaks of his constant thoughts of them “I think about us, I think about it all the time, what we could be".
Tumblr media
The doll itself is handmade and as such it is seen as having more intrinsic value than an average toy. Handmade objects immediately conjure up visions of great effort, love and care.
Tumblr media
In S5 June mentions the doll to Nick and he dodges the reference as he fruitlessly attempts to cut ties with her. Later the doll appears in the background in a scene in which June sings to Nicole. As a “personal object” that embodies the love of her father and carries his spirit, I’m glued to the screen every time that doll shows its face. I’m almost certain it was packed in that bag when June and Holly fled to Hawaii, but who knows?

Hi! I have always wondered if June has ever talked to anyone about Nick and her feelings. Earlier in the season, Moria gives her a look when June is asked about if Nick would go to Jezeblels. Do you think the look was because Moria knew from June that Nick wouldn’t be there or if she was curious herself? At the end when Nick says ‘I’m nothing’ and Tuello says ‘not to her’, do you think Nick is surprised that Tuello knows of June’s feelings for him?
Hey! Good questions.
We don't think that June has really talked to anyone about Nick and her feelings aside from the tape that June sent Luke in 3x05. The absence of such a conversation looms very heavily in many of June’s scenes ever since she arrived in Canada. You can feel the unspoken words there. That is absolutely done deliberately in our eyes.
Answer under the cut due to length:
The absence of such a scene is very notable because it shows that June still feels like she's unable to be honest because Moira and especially Luke would just not be able to understand. June is a very different person now than she was Before and it's clear that they would not be able to understand her, including her relationship with Nick. Not talking about him is the easier choice and so she locks her feelings away, deep in her heart. Plus with how impossible it feels for June to get to be with Nick ever again, bringing him up would be very painful and so she avoids that pain by avoiding bringing him up and the feelings she has.
Furthermore, a lack of honesty with Luke specifically is a very consistent part of their relationship, as seen through the flashbacks and current time. So that continuing on shows that their relationship is still an uneven one and that June is making particular choices in an effort to manage Luke's emotions and bend herself to be the old woman that he used to know.
Interestingly, as we've seen, Mark Tuello very clearly has some ideas about June's feelings. We think that comes from a combination of him hearing June's tape and her testimony, information from Serena, and his own observations about how June reacts whenever Nick is brought up. June isn't very good at hiding her feelings anymore and Mark clearly picks up on that, especially as June doesn't make an effort to try to hide how she feels in his presence unlike when she's around Luke and Moira. Additionally, Mark only knows the current June and so it's easier for him to see just how deeply she feels for Nick and how much he truly means to her than it is for Luke and Moira who knew her from Before and who have certain expectations that make it harder for them to see.
As for Moira, after June came back with the file on Hannah that Nick compiled she tells Mark Tuello "You've got a good man in Gilead to help you now." Additionally, Moira knows that June would not be the kind of person to trust Hannah's safety with Nick if he was not a good person. For Moira, who is a good judge of character, this is enough information for her to know that he wouldn't be the kind of man who goes to Jezebels.
We do think that Nick was absolutely surprised when Mark said that. Nick's statement of "I'm nothing" indicates that he believes that he no longer has value in June's life and therefore she would have no reason to act like she loves him when they are not together; that she would have moved on, become happy, and forgotten him. So to hear that she cares about him when they're apart and that other people know about it when it's been a secret for years must have been very surprising and moving to him.

"One of the biggest casting challenges of the show presented itself when it came time to find the actor who would play Nick, Commander Waterford's driver, June's engmatic lover, and a potential Eye of Gilead.
Despite the showrunner's plans for the character, his presence in the pilot episode was limited to only a few lines.
Thomas recalls "For anybody who had that question, we said, "Look, we haven't felt like this since the infamous Breaking Bad. This is something special. This will be something great. You need to trust us."
And that led to actors getting on the phone with Bruce and talking it through, because they were making a commitment based on maybe one or two lines in the script...and Max Minghella saw through all of that and came in and read, in a climate where he doesn't have to come in and read if he doesn't want to."
It was a commitment that was easy to make for Minghella. "The truth is that before I even read the pilot script, it was sent to me with real support from people I worked with who...really believed it was something I should be part of. And then when I read it... it was genuinely just in a different league to anything I'd read in quite some time."
"For me, the most interesting thing about playing Nick is the element of spy on spy on spy," he says. '"That ambiguity in the book is compelling, and then even more so in the TV show, where we have to live with these characters for a very long time. I don't want to give all my cards away that quickly, so I thought it was a less-is-more situation.
"Nick in the book is very much a cipher," explains Kira Snyder, co-executive producer and writer of the episode where we learn more about Nick's history. "Nick is part of the political structure, he's part of the power apparatus...but how did he get there? Part of the fun of that episode was to kind of peel back the mystery of this young man and see where he came from, how he got recruited, and how his idealism was turned against him, how it was curdled by the corrupt system of Gilead. How he keeps trying to find something to believe in, some way to make things work, make things good. Which is what we see with his becoming an Eye; he doesn't have alot of ways to strike back at the Commander, but through his role as part of the secret police informer network he has the ability to try to keep a check on the man."
