Day 9: Most Visually Pleasing Love Scene

Let's get into the colored love scenes. The ones completely bathed in a singular color to evoke a certain emotion fueling the love scene. IDK what the colors mean 98% of the time but I know the color was a deliberate choice.

The Green Bathroom Scene in KinnPorsche. The way I was OBSESSED with this scene. I could watch it for 10 hrs straight and scream and squeal like it's the first time.

The Blue Scene in For Him the Series. Between the blue lighting and Nail allowing Him to undress him completely (jewelry included) I was GAGGED. It was such an eye grabbing scene.

The Pink Scene in the Sign. What can I say about this fucking scene other than PERFECTION!? I liked that we got two love scenes wrapped in one bright neon pink bow, but specifically when they move to the bed and Phaya is PLASTERED again Tharn's back?? The silent consent?? Tharn biting his thumb as Phaya entered him?? *Chef's Kiss*

But also...any type of lifting in a love scene??? Idk man it tickles my brain and I LOVE to see it! Specifically Tharn lifting Type in the shower in TharnType s2. Honestly...Tharn lifted Type's big ass quite frequently.

Oh also that one love scene of Charlie railing Babe against the locker room mirror. I enjoyed every scene of Babe getting railed though.

And the Daddy Couch Scene in Love in the Air. Like that was a treat for me. I prayed for it and was gifted. It was for me.

BL Challenge 2k24 ✨Day 7✨

Favorite Villain: Korn Theerapanyakul

It isn't often that we get an actual villain in a BL. We have plenty of love rivals but those are rarely ever villains in the true sense of the word. We also have a large, unfortunate array of shitty parents and parental figures, some of which absolutely do fall into the villain category, but they don't deserve my effort or your attention.

But then we have Korn.

Korn is a villain. Make absolutely no mistake about that. This man has dedicated his life to playing 4D chess with everyone around him, including and especially his sons, and he's brilliant at it. There is never a moment where he isn't in control, there is never a moment where he hasn't thought at least five steps ahead, and he has very few blind spots.

What gets me—and what makes him that much more insidious in my opinion—is how he presents himself to the world.

"This man, a villain? Never! He's just a nice, soft-spoken dad in a sweater vest! Sure he's a bit intimidating but he's in the mafia, it's to be expected. And just look at how accepting he is of his gay sons! He's looking at a photo of his son and his son-in-law and smiling, isn't that lovely?"

False!

Korn's image is perfectly curated and if you only look on the surface, from the outside that's exactly what he is: a nice dad and a respectable businessman. He's rational, calm, and level-head, especially when you compare him to Gun—which you can't not do. It's impossible to have a conversation about Korn without talking about Gun, who is absolutely just as bad and who I easily could've chosen.

The difference is that Gun's evil is overt and in a way, it's more...honest because of it. He's not out here pretending to be a good person or trying to be anything other than exactly what he is. What you see is what you get. However, I chose Korn precisely because of that insidiousness, because his evil appears so much more subtle but only when it remains in the shadows.

Because when everything gets brought to light? Hoooooo BOY.

This man kept his foster sister in isolation under lock and key for years after he killed her husband and took her away from her two little boys. Then he left those little boys in the care of a degenerate gambler and watched them sink further and further into debt. And that's only the thin end of the wedge! If we got into all the ways he fucked up his OWN boys, we'd be here all damn day.

Kidnapping on perhaps more than one occasion, a hit squad, Kim's entire personality, Kinn's emotional range, need I go on?

But getting back to Porsche and Chay, Korn could've helped them at literally any point but he didn't lift a finger until they grew up and became useful to him. He could've cleared their debts, paid for Chay's education, provided for them, kept them from getting remotely close to a situation were men were beating them and trashing their home. But he did exactly none of that because whatever sense of obligation Korn might have felt toward them absolutely pales in comparison to his need for control.

That's what this all comes down to: control. The world is a chessboard and everyone in Korn's orbit is a piece on it. He proposed an outcome for himself and he got it.

He made sure Kinn was cemented as head of the main family and found a way to cement Porsche as head of the minor family. He got rid of Gun and the threat he presented and succeeded in burying the truth of what happened to Porsche's parents with him, because the truth that Korn gave simply is not the whole truth. It never will be because divulging the truth means giving up control, and that is something he will never do.

I could literally talk for hours about Korn. He's a fascinating character. He's got so many layers. Bottom line?

Este señor es el mismísimo diablo. This man is the living breathing devil.

They were filthy for this and I applaud them! The first time I watched this my mouth did drop open in shock.

I also suggest the special episode but can you class someone moaning the word Daddy several times as a line? If Yes then include that as well!

The only gif I can find of my girl is with her love interest, but Pin and Tian were the best pair of people who genuinely liked each other, absolutely did not want to get married, and worked together to make sure it didn't happen.

4. Charn & Maya, Laws of Attraction

Everybody needs a gorgeous bestie who will call you on your bullshit and get nosy about your love life.

5. Yai and Tharn, The Sign

Day 2 of the 15 Day BL Challenge

Day 2: Fave Rookie Actor Pairing - Mile Phakphum Ramsaithong & Apo Nattawin Wattanagitiphat

Oh, what can I say about these two? It's been years and I'm still not over how they performed in Kinnporsche. Kinnporsche asked for a lot as far as their actors were concerned. The roles were some of the most complex characterization that has been in any BL, and I can't think of a single instance in which these two did not perfectly play their roles.

Add in the whole behind story of their paths crossing before and everything Mile seemingly did to get this show completed, and it brings up a lot of appreciation for how they had such a love for this project. If it was any other show, with any other cast I doubt it would have ended up airing. These two are one of the pairings I have explored outside of their roles and from what I've seen of Mile and Apo as people, I do genuinely like them.

Not to mention, there's at least a little gratitude for them bringing to life two of my favorite characters in fiction. I had no idea about Kinn Theerapanyakul or Porsche Pachara and then a certain section of Tumblr would not stop talking about this show. It was wonderful getting to know those characters and that story.

Day Two: Favourite Rookie Actor Pairing

Oooh, this is a good question! So, my instant thought would be BillyBabe, but I’m not sure they count as Billy is not a newbie to BL, only Babe is. So, other than them, I’m gonna have to go with NatLouis (Kiseki: Dear to Me); Ai Di & Chen Yi really just whipped me in 2023.

Oh! And BrightNonkul (I Feel You Linger in the Air). I’m not sure if they’ll continue to be paired after the special episode, but they were bloody fantastic together.

☆*:.｡. Day 6: Fave line from your fave series .｡.:*☆

Oooh okay, okay, getting a little more challenging! I went for lines that I still think about regularly - both for the words used and the way they were delivered. And I will shamelessly cheat and pick one per country.

Thailand with To Sir, With Love. This show has a lot of really good lines and monologues imo, but my pick is in ep.11. Jiu and Tian has confessed to each other and Tian explains some truths about his family to Jiu, who asks if being homosexual really is a problem.

“Yes, my father would definitely not accept it. In the past, there was a member of the association that was like me. Then he was oppressed until he had to commit suicide . So my mother had to keep the secret that I like men. If everyone knows, the Song family will be ruined because of me. I don’t want to be the head of the association. I never wanted to. I just want to be me.”

Japan with Utsukushii Kare. It's ep.6 and Kiyoi's broken "I am not a god, okay?" It was such a perfect culmination of everything going wrong with their relationship, a necessary break down of his facade and a much needed wake up call for Hira. I love it.

Taiwan with We Best Love. First of all, I was obsessed with the way Yu speaks. There is something in the cadence of his speech that completely fascinates me (the way he says "Yīnwèi wǒ xǐhuān nǐ" ?? like drug to me). But I especially love this little exchange, post first kiss.

“- Was that your first kiss?” [Gao Shide shakes his head no] - Who was it? - That day in the swimming pool. - ... That doesn’t count.”

His face before he says that always gets me.

and Korea with Semantic Error. This one doesn't have an episode number because it is every. single. time. Sangwoo calls Jaeyoung "hyung". I love the impact the first one has, especially, but frankly? The way Jaeyoung reacts to it every time is just delightful.

15 DAY BL CHALLENGE - DAY 8

The Trope You Hate Except When It's This Series

I don't tend to like "Soulmates". For example, I wasn't a big fan of the trope as seen in La Pluie and Color Rush. Both definitely are better in that they deal with discussions around the darker side of the trope (ie. the color blind kidnapping their soul mates in Color Rush). But, at the end of the day, the main characters always overcome that and the fated love interests always still get together.

It's not because Soulmates is a bad trope, I think the idea of it just creeps me out. Like there is a person out there FOR YOU, and you are FOR THEM and neither of you could possibly connect with anyone else on the same level even if you had completely different politics/backgrounds/cultures/languages/etc. I actually have some plot bunnies written for a subversion of the trope where like: what if in a dystopian world the government forces soul mates together and there are like programs finding and forcing people together. But enough about my writing I'll get to the point. And the point is...

THE SIGN MADE ME ENJOY IT SO MUCH

I think it's mainly because, in The Sign, they are Karmic Soulmates, and it's not like they live in a universe where everyone has a soulmate. It just so happens that they have this intense connection from their past lives.

I think they also do a great job showing like: but that's not the ONLY reason these two like each other.

That moment Phaya discharges himself from the hospital after he realizes he and Tharn are karmic soulmates is *chef's kiss*.

Like before that: yes, they were in love. But after that it was like: NOT ONLY are they in love they KNOW they are KARMICALLY BOUND TO ONE ANOTHER. I loved that, and it didn't make me feel like they were forced together the whole time. It was definitely my favourite thing and made me rethink my general dislike of the Soulmates trope.

Day 14 - Top five most sad boys

(This is 90% Japan because they do sad boys best.)

1. Tomoda Koki - One Room Angel

Just the saddest boy but also a horribly relatable sad boy, the kind Japan does so well, he feels defeated by life and can’t see purpose in it any longer.

2. Mamoru - Kabe-Koji

He puts zero value in himself and only believes his work is good if it’s popular. He’s also pining for literal human sunshine.

3. Kijima Rio - The Novelist Series

Hates himself, hates the world and constantly battling the ghost of the prestigious novelist he feels he used to be. A sad, surly, manipulative asshole of a man whom I happen to adore.

4. Ray - Only Friends

My darling boy. Sad, broken and left bitter by the lack of love he’s been shown. Ray is a street cat just looking for a cat person to bring them inside and adore them.

5. Ishihara Ren - Tokyo in April is

On the surface Ren doesn’t seem so sad but scratch just a little and you see all the burdens this man has been carrying on too young shoulders. He’s a complicated wee bean that’s healed by the love he never thought he’d be allowed.

15-Day BL Challenge in 1 Night!

I'm more of a lurker than a poster but Tumblr's my fave place to wallow in BLness. My 2nd favorite place is the spreadsheet where I track the shows I've watched (172 completed in just over a year), so @negrowhat 's challenge was irresistible. I'm gonna cram my answers in one post. Here goes!

Fave OG Actor Pairing: Some of the ones I think of as OG are only like 4 years old, so this was tough. And the 18 shows that have gotten my top score aren't very old. But I went through those 18 and picked the oldest, and it was the 2018 Korean microfilm Some More. Because it's so short it's super rewatchable, but even if I wasn't able to watch the whole thing a half dozen times (which I have), I'd still have gone back & watched the sweet moments and sex scene about 25 times (which I have). So I guess my fave OG actor pairing is Park Chan Ung and Kim Joon Bum! How they got me so deeply invested in their love in mere minutes is beyond me, but they did!

Fave Rookie Actor Pairing: Does Japan do the CP thing that Thailand does? I don't think so, but one couple I wish had about a dozen more BL series together lined up are Kouhei Higuchi and Atsuki Mashiko of My Personal Weatherman! Their chemistry was visceral and they're too pretty to be believed.

Side Dish That Should've Been the Main Course: While I enjoyed the main pairing a lot, they were nothing compared to the crazy rollercoaster side plot (how'd it go from so funny to SO dark to so sexy to so sweet and wholesome like that??) of Vegas/Pete from KinnPorsche!

Fave Ship Dynamic: Obvs from answers 2 & 3 I am not against D/s ships at ALL. Also a sucker for tough-but-submissive-bodyguard with mafia-brat-prince. Honestly I like tons of different dynamics from innocent to toxic, but one that gives me major butterflies is a guy who thinks he's straight but when confronted with the idea of liking another guy, doesn't have a macho freakout or run away, just kind of straightforwardly & sincerely searches his feelings until he figures it out. And then takes care of his baby. Why's that so HOT and sweet? Some of my fave examples: Pete/Ae in Love By Chance, Le Jian/Amber from DNA Says Love You, and Ida/Aoki from My Love Mix-Up!

Biggest Flop: This is expectations vs. execution, right? There's loads of shows I've abandoned, some I've stuck with for no good reason, etc., that are way worse than what I consider my personal biggest let-down. I was so enamored of Perth from LBC that I assumed he could do no wrong, and the bully-to-lover, rich/poor pairings often do it for me. So I guess I just assumed Dangerous Romance would be amazing, and it was REALLY good for a couple episodes. It wasn't the worst thing I ever saw, but so much of it just ... felt ... flat. Very surprising.

Fave Line From Your Fave Series: Well I know my fave series--Cherry Magic Thailand was the most perfect, entrancing, heartwarming series EVER, OMG, it was staggeringly good and stuck the landing in a way few shows have managed. I can't really think of one standout line--the script was so on point & there were HUNDREDS of sweet tingly moments. There were some epic ones in ep11 tho: When Achi says "The voice inside your head is so loud" and Karan (the boldest he's ever been) replies "Don't worry; soon you won't be able to read my mind anymore." (But then clearly uses that power one more time to gain the sweetest nonverbal consent EVER.) Then, Karan: "Do you regret losing your power?" Achi: "I'd regret not loving you." (OMG how I squealed.)

Fave Villain: This was so tough. An over-the-top villain I loved to hate (and an actor I loved from his sweetie-pie green-flag role in SCOY) was obvs Heng Asavarid as Chalothon in The Sign. But an actor who was so excellent at being loathsome and malicious toward the main couple, with just enough of a redemption arc that I didn't totally despise the character by the end (but did hate most of the way through): Park Hae In as Eun Ji (Jae Won's ex) in The Eighth Sense. It was a typical "faen fatale" role but so well done. So a tie between 2 totally different takes on the destructive ex.

The Trope You Hate Except When It's "This Series": OK, "hate" is a strong word for how I feel about the drop-of-rain-makes-you-ill so love-interest-takes-care-of-you trope. It's OK. But holy SHIT is it overused. Holy shit. I sigh resignedly when I realize we're going there. EXCEPT. When P'Phayu goes to visit Rain in Love in the Air when he's sick, and his version of caregiving? Forcibly applying medicine in the form of a rectal suppository. It is so funny, weirdly sexy, very in line with their dynamic (doesn't get in the way of their romance moments later at all), & it shoves a big middle finger up the overoveroverused sick-bed trope.

Most Visually Pleasing Love Scene: Okay, THE scene in The Sign is the clear winner in my & many people's books. But there are so many runners-up: the post-race one in Love in the Air. Just about every one in Pit Babe (both couples) & My Personal Weatherman. (A lot of other faves don't quite qualify as visually or emotionally pleasing--lustfully pleasing should be a 3rd category in this challenge!)

Most Emotionally Pleasing Love Scene: Again, I have a clear winner: Cherry Magic Thailand. So full of emotion, so well deserved, so everything. Sigh. But lots of runners-up: same scene in The Sign, both kissing scenes in DNA Says Love You (tame but soo emotionally satisfying), Ray & Sand's camper reunion in Only Friends, the post-prison love scenes for both couples in Kiseki: Dear to Me, the 1st time in I Feel You Linger in the Air ...

Breakup That Should've Stayed Broken Up: Maybe it's because I try to be choosy in what I watch all the way thru or maybe I'm a big softy who tends to root for every couple no matter how lame. In all my completed shows, I could only think of 2 breakups where I wasn't at all invested in them getting back together (and maybe against it): Tian/Poon, What Zabb Man and Top/Mew, Only Friends.

Wedding You Wish You Had an Invite To: If we're talking weddings that actually appeared in the show, Achi and Karan's in Cherry Magic Thailand, obvs! If it's hypothetical weddings, I'd be desperate to go to one of ANY of the characters in Playboyy! I'd wear a bulletproof vest & bring my own flask of booze, but it would be the trashy chaos-filled social event of a lifetime.

Give 5 Good Boys a Gold Star: Just 5? OK, some I haven't mentioned yet. 1. Shin Woo, Light on Me, 2. Palm, Never Let Me Go, 3. Mohk, Last Twilight, 4. Thun, He's Coming to Me, 5. Neua, Secret Crush on You. Best boys!

The Top 5 Most Sad Boys: I'll limit it to ones where the suffering was kinda pretty, not just painful. 1. Way, Pit Babe, 2. Akk, The Eclipse, 3. Kaipa/Gaipa, Moonlight Chicken, 4. Hae Bom, Cherry Blossoms After Winter, 5. Kiyoi, My Beautiful Man

Bestest Besties: Just one? Gah! Fine, Pearl & Gavreel in Gameboys. She got those boys together in quarantine!

Most Emotionally Pleasing Love Scene: Kinn x Porsche Bathroom Scene in Kinnporsche

I just—when I tell you this scene changed me as a person. Kinnporsche was the first BL I ever watched and a little over a year and 100+ BL's later, I don't think any other scene has ever hit as viscerally for me as this one did. I was mesmerized the first time I saw it. Beautiful doesn't even begin to describe this scene; pure horny catharsis comes closer. I love it beyond words.

And yeah no, I couldn't pick just one emotionally pleasing scene either.

Runner Up: Bai Zong Yi x Fan Ze Rui Reunion Scene in Kiseki: Dear to Me

Does the number 1,573 make you want to weep on the floor or are you normal? They loved each other so much and they were apart for so long and even though Zong Yi forgot so much he remembered loving Ze Rui and Ze Rui remembered loving him even though he pretended to forget in order to protect him and, and— *weeps on the floor*

Honorable Mention: Phaya x Tharn Color Exchange in The Sign

I had to include this one because realizing that I was watching a color exchange via LIGHT made me deliriously happy. I think it's the first color exchange I clocked fully by myself as I was watching it. This scene was already so emotionally charged before it hit us with Tharn's Blinding Light of Love bathing everything but it didn't stop there. No, it went one step further; it was in Phaya's garuda ORANGE! And Phaya's bokeh? In Tharn's naga GREEN!

However sad this goodbye was, I knew it wasn't goodbye forever because if there's one thing our resident color demon @respectthepetty has taught me, it's that color coded boys in love get happy endings!

Day 3 - Side Dish that should have been the Main Course

I am a massive sucker for the side couple!!!

But the standout one for me recently is Kiseki: Dear to me's Chen Yi and Ai Di. I could have watched them all day long. And they got me back into BL after my BL slump.

Can you beat a badass gangster boss in training who has absolutely no game and his hellhound of a boyfriend that only he can leash? I think not! Their stumbling around each other until the timing was right killed me. Plus Ai Di had amazing style!

Day 4 of the 15 Day BL Challenge

Day 4: Fave Ship Dynamic - Battle Couple

"Ah, those two. In a fight, they're lethal. Around each other, they melt." - Richelle Mead

That quote is basically the perfect description for my current favorite ship dynamic. Luckily, there's at least a few ships I can immediately point to here. The clearest example probably being KinnPorsche but after that came Chen Yi and Ai Di. I still can't believe I got a sparring scene in The Sign and even in a show like Only Friends, it's pretty obvious that you do not want to get on the wrong side of Ray and Sand.

Give me a ship where there's a sharp edge of danger to both characters but they would do anything for each other, and it's likely to become one of my favorite ships.

Day Fourteen: Top five sad boys

Akk, The Eclipse He's our ultimate sad boy, isn't he? Those fucking eyes. He's closeted and confused, he wants what he thinks he can't have, he wants to do what's right but has been conditioned to protect his abusive superiors. He's literally the moon to Ayan's sun, and he shines to much brighter when Ayan is with him.

Phob, Something in my Room The cheeriest sad boy around. This series actually tore me apart, to the point I called my brother after the finale, bawling my heart out because, "they didn't get to grow old together," "but now they have eternity together!" Phob tries to be cheery and smiley for Phat, but deep down he's just sad. I mean, he literally took his own life because he was just so depressed with how bad his life had gotten. Then, he allowed himself to fall in love even though he knew he was on limited time. I absolutely LOVE this precious boy, and I will fight anyone who says anything bad about my sad little ghost baby.

Tharn, The Sign No one is gonna argue with this, right? This poor little tiny itty bitty baby is not only the reincarnation of a murdered Naga princess, but his parents were murdered, he was forced to live in a Buddhist temple for his adolescence because karma was against him, a Naga Prince General stalked him from his childhood and killed anyone to get close to him, then when he meets his eternal soul mate he has to constantly watch the universe try and kill the guy. He eventually ends up being a prisoner for a year (yeah yeah, I know he was 'caring' for Chalothon, but lets not pretend things didn't go in Chalothon's favour for a while), knowing that the man he loved was out there, no doubt a broken human.

Oh-Aew, I Told Sunset About You/I Promised You The Moon Oh, this precious little twink is my son. His best friend falls out with him because Oh-Aew realises he enjoys the same thing, then he gets his feelings messed around when they finally reunite, and then when things are going well he gets cheated on, and only gets a happy ending after going through emotional hell. However, he's so loving; he loves his friends, and always wants to make his parents happy. He's so precious, and deserves the world.

Gaipa, Moonlight Chicken We didn't get nearly enough Gaipa in the series, but he's a precious sad boy with a longing, eternally unrequited love for an older man (*cough* there is like5 years between the actors *cough*) and he does everything he can to show his love. He gets knocked back, then his mother dies and it's all just heart wrenching.
