so this article seems to summarize things fairly well. basically french far right catholics, monarchist, old school fascists (think: Mussolini-era), neo-fascists etc love Joan of Arc. You really see a lot of old facho French men cum in their unwashed underpants every time jeanne d'arc is mentioned on TV. Also fachos organize pseudo-Medieval festivals once a year because they heavily romanticize the middle ages (Philippe de Villiers, who created the Puy-du-Fou theme park, is a facho). What is the link between joan of arc and random theme parks in fuck-all, France, you may ask? well White supremacists basically think white French culture(s) is under attack and think the middle ages is the last time France was 'pure' and 'white.' And bc little Jeanne d'Arc's selling point was that she was a virgin, they probably kind of view her as an untouched white woman or something, idk! Honestly I am from a trotskyist and atheist family, i know nothing about catholicism or the middle ages, but there's just noxious vibes around jeanne d'arc in France. I didn't even know she was considered a feminist figure under I heard american and british friends mention her and it was a moment of cognitive dissonance.

Le 14 juillet vu du Pharo, vers le Fort Saint-Jean, le Vieux-Port et Notre-Dame de la Garde. En fin de spectacle, le Fort Saint-Nicolas est  embrasé puis on reconstitue pour quelques secondes le Pont Transbordeur.

Puis le palais du Pharo en bleu-blanc-rouge.

whenever people talk about "how am i supposed to explain this to my young [2-7 yo] child ?!" i think about my preschool teacher when i was 3 who had shoulder-length raven hair and pale skin and wore dark purple lipstick and heavy eyeliner every day and how i didnt remember any of that. all i really remember(ed) of her physical appearance was her dark hair and her bright green eyes. until a couple years ago when i was going through a bunch of childhood stuff my mom had saved and i saw our class photo and looked at her and was taken aback by how she looked lmfaoooo. i was lowkey obsessed with her as a toddler yet i never seemed to notice she was an actual grown up goth girl 💀 all i remembered was the love she had for me/us and the love i/we had for her (which is the point of this anecdote)

In the supermarket looking at red white and blue everything, and I'm reminded of the time I saw some fanart on tumblr, of some woobified 18th century-looking man holding a bouquet of red, white, and blue roses. There was no ID in the caption except that it was "patriotic." And for the life of me I couldn't recognize what historical figure and country this represented but I remember thinking, "Well, there are three major candidates for the country...."
