In 2014, I was nursing a toddler, attending a monthly breastfeeding support group, helping lots of friends of friends on social media. I wanted to get additional training, and help Breastfeeding families in a more official way. I asked my support group if they would help me to do that. They ignored me... for 4 months. I continued to help moms, and I discovered Reaching Our Sisters Everywhere (ROSE), in Atlanta, where I spent “a little” time. They allowed me to become a Community Transformer, so that I could help even more moms, in my area. I later became a Breastfeeding USA counselor, a certified lactation counselor (CLC), a co-founder of BSTARS, a private practice lactation consultant (IBCLC), and a pathway 2 lactation educator. Today, I am a NICU lactation consultant and loving it- helping as many moms and families as I can. I owe all of this and more to ROSE, and all of those who give Black breastfeeding Mothers and Advocates an opportunity to learn, meet goals, and be great. Shout out to the organizations and individuals who tried to bury us, without knowing that we were seeds! 🌹 This is one reason why we need and celebrate Black Breastfeeding Week (August 25th-31st)! #LoveOnTop #BlkBfing #BlkBfingWeek #NBM #BSTARS #supportROSE

Palmer Hayden’s 1967 watercolor of a wartime mother and her baby is a sweet rendering of maternal love and the anticipation of a letter sent from far away. We’re sharing it now in celebration of #blackbreastfeedingweek - an annual public health effort to help support and celebrate breastfeeding mothers like Hayden’s subject. WHY DO WE NEED BLACK BREASTFEEDING WEEK? @BLKBFINGWEEK shares top 5 reasons: “1. The high black infant mortality rate: Black babies are dying at twice the rate (in some place, nearly triple) the rate of white babies. This is a fact. The high infant mortality rate among black infants is mostly to their being disproportionately born too small, too sick or too soon. These babies need the immunities and nutritional benefit of breast milk the most. According to the CDC, increased breastfeeding among black women could decrease infant mortality rates by as much as 50%. So when I say breastfeeding is a life or death matter, this is what I mean. And it is not up for debate or commenting. This is the only reason I have ever needed to do this work, but I will continue with the list anyway…” http://blackbreastfeedingweek.org/why-we-need-black-breastfeeding-week/ 🖤 * #blackbreastfeedingweek #blackmomsdobreastfeed #betonblack #blackmoms #bbw17
