Just about 13 years ago, I started what has been for me, my life’s work — this site. And honestly, when I started this site, I couldn’t have imagined three-quarters of the things I’ve done and experienced over JOVM’s history to ever happen.  I’ve covered roughly 1,100-1,200 shows in NYC, with a handful of shows in Chicago, Baltimore and Philadelphia.  I’ve covered about a dozen or more…

Altering Music Careers: The Benefits and Challenges of Collaborating with Other Musicians | Daniel Siegel Alonso
Tumblr media
When two (or more) musicians collide, magic can happen—or occasionally, it's more like a polite, artistic wrestling match. The music industry is rife with iconic collaborations that altered the course of genres and careers, from unexpected partnerships to power-packed duos. But like all things in life, collaboration in music brings both highs and lows. Daniel Siegel Alonso looks at the benefits and challenges of working with other artists with some iconic examples.
The Benefits
Fresh Perspectives
Siegel Alonso points out that when you collaborate with another artist, you invite their creativity and influences into the studio. This injection of new ideas can be what your music needs to evolve. Take Blondie's Debbie Harry and Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of Chic, for example. In 1981, the punk frontwoman teamed up with the duo for her solo debut. The result? A hybrid of genres. KooKoo was one of the earliest fusions of funk, rock, and dance music that would become the trademark of Rodgers and Edwards, and this style would later be evident on albums such as David Bowie's Let's Dance. Harry's punk edge combined with Chic's disco groove created something distinctive—proof that stepping outside your comfort zone can lead to timeless innovation.
Skill Expansion
Sometimes, your collaborators possess technical skills or a level of musicianship that helps you grow. Siegel Alonso says a classic case is musical chameleon David Bowie teaming up with The Donny McCaslin Group on his Blackstar record. Bowie was known for pushing boundaries, and in his final album, he turned to McCaslin's jazz group to elevate his sound. The partnership propelled both parties to explore experimental territory that blurred the lines between art-rock and jazz. Collaborating with seasoned musicians allowed Bowie to embrace an avant-garde sound, while McCaslin's group gained exposure to a new audience. Win-win.
The Power of Reinvention
Collaborating can also help musicians refresh a staid image or explore new genres without fully stepping into the unknown. Enter Dolly Parton's 2023 rock album, Rockstar. At 77, the queen of country shocked the world by teaming up with rock legends like Paul McCartney and Steven Tyler to create an album of hard-hitting covers and originals. Dolly's leap into rock allowed her to break out of country music's constraints while remaining true to her roots as a larger-than-life entertainer. This kind of reinvention keeps musicians relevant and surprising—and Parton's ability to seamlessly navigate a new genre shows just how potent partnerships can be.
The Challenges
1. Creative Control
Siegel Alonso advises that one of the primary challenges in collaboration is the shift from being the sole decision-maker. It's like co-driving a car—you might not always agree on the destination or the path. Collaborations can sour when both parties have assertive, conflicting creative visions. However, managing egos, preferences, and creative direction with respect is critical. It's a delicate balance, but when handled respectfully, these obstacles can lead to a stronger result than either party could achieve alone.
2. Balancing Styles
Sometimes, artists from different genres or styles collide—and it's not always seamless. While Harry and Chic pulled off their genre fusion, not every alliance is seamless. Merging two distinct musical worlds can feel like squeezing square pegs into round holes. If the styles don't gel or someone feels like they're sacrificing too much of their signature sound, the project can feel forced or disjointed.
3. Schedules and Logistics
As ordinary as it sounds, scheduling can be a considerable challenge. Busy musicians often have packed touring and recording schedules, making it difficult to carve out time for collaboration. Even worse, the spontaneity and flow of creative chemistry can get lost when you're working across different time zones or coordinating through emails and Zoom meetings.
Conclusion
Teaming up with other musicians is a fragile balancing act. It can lead to career-defining breakthroughs, as seen in Harry's genre-bending debut with Chic, Bowie's jazz-tinged swan song, or Dolly's genre jump into rock territory. At the same time, it requires compromise, flexibility, and a willingness to renounce one's ego.
While collaboration is not without its challenges, the potential rewards are worth the effort—musicians can explore new sounds, expand their skill sets, and even breathe new life into their careers. So, Daniel Siegel Alonso notes that while it's not always simple, for musicians willing to embrace the unpredictable magic of partnership, the potential upside is nothing short of transformational.

Oh boy, Anon.
Tumblr media
Am not: American, right wing Christian, or antivaxx. Am very pro vaxx. So I think this rhetoric is bash*t crazy, but don’t know how far-reaching or influential it is.
But I think that Aaron Rodgers must be fuming these days. He’s an Uber Swiftie and I bet he’s been crushing on Blondie for years, and is now kicking himself for missing his chance. I bet he never thought she’d date an NFLer, and it’s not him, lol. With his weird vaxx views he never stood a chance.

the most fun thing about being even semi a football fan and seeing the whole taylor thing play out is recognizing that she's boosted viewership and attendance for the chiefs' games against the BEARS and the JETS (post-rodgers injury). blondie is out here single handedly saving those games viewing numbers in particular because we all know the football was not going to be pulling in the viewers.
it's actually wild how much power she has

MY YEAR IN REVIEW - 2023
Tumblr media
Well what a year its been, a glorious hot summer, festivals, shooting exclusively for Ashnikko, and a few bucket lists ticked off.
Shooting a few rock bands at Lytham Festival (Motley Crue and Def Leppard) and discovering some great new bands at Neighbourhood Festival (CMAT and Picture Parlour).
My favourite photos this year were featured in an article on Louder Than War here:
Milky Way from Wargasm is my ultimate favourite gig shot of the year - I took this after I had done my favourite list. I have entered this into the EPAs photo competition. I love the back lighting on her hair as it flares up just at the right moment, the way the edge of her coat is tinged blue by the lighting. BOOM!
Tumblr media
I do like lists and this is the list of bands and artists I have photographed this year:
Shows: Wargasm /Drop Out Kings | Ashnikko / Hemlocke Springs | Hot Milk / Witch Fever /Modern Error | CMAT | Suzi Quatro | Melanie Martinez/ UPSAHL | The Pretenders  | Ellie Goulding / Olivia Lunny | The Last Dinner Party / Picture Parlour | Lauren Mayberry /Kaeto | PJ Harvey | Muse /Nova Twins | Princess Goes / Baija Flo | Christine + The Queens / Rhodes | Nile Rodgers + Chic | Generation Sex / Bob Vylan / Grade 2 | Kiss/ The Wild Things /Skindred

All my albums can be found at my Flick portfolio here:
As the year ends, I’d like to thank the people who have been supportive, whether it be a like, a chat, a comment or a retweet. Thanks to the photographers who have shared the pit with me and shared laughs and moans and to the reviewers who have complimented my photos with their beautiful words.
It’s been 15 years since I leapt into the music business with Mudkiss Fanzine. It's 8 years since I started to shoot for academy music group as a house photographer and 10 years louder than war It’s been another memorable year in the pit.
And a thanks to the PR + artists who made it possible to get into shows in the first place. My favourite show of the year to watch was Pink in Bolton - just spectacular. This year's top highlights have been getting interviewed and photographed for the Observer and Guardian on reaching 60 and still using the punk DIY spirit and having a photo shoot with the great photographer Perou. I was delighted to have won a one-off Marilyn Monroe hand-painted jacket by Dave Sharp 2024 has some promising shows lined up (of course pending accreditation). I've also been asked to do a talk/interview in March 2024 and I have entered a photo competition for the first time ever - wish me luck. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

One Way or Another, Call Me, Hanging on the Telephone, Rapture, The Tide is High, Heart of Glass e Dreaming, entre outras, foram ovacionadas pelo público do Coachella.

News/Announcements: Shoutouts to Patreon Patrons, Creatives Rebuild New York and Asian Arts Initiative I’m currently in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec for the 22nd annual FME Festival. Y’all should expect photos and other coverage over the course of the upcoming days and weeks, along with my regular coverage here. But in the meantime, the show must continue as much as possible. So let’s get to it, right? Earlier this site, turned 14. 14 years of anything — especially a job — is an exceedingly long time. In the blogosphere, that’s roughly 22 lifetimes. Now, when I started JOVM, I was felt as though I had no real choice but to go out on my own. I didn’t feel — or believe — that I’d get a fair shot to do what this site has become with another outlet.  I’ve long felt a desire to create something similar to the wildly eclectic, dynamic, global sort of environment I grew up immersed in as a young, Black boy from Corona, Queens. And I didn’t regularly see the environment I grew up in represented in the music magazines and sites that I loved to read. To me, that’s a real weakness because — well, there’s amazing music out there that’s not getting the love that it should both nationally and internationally.  When I started JOVM, I couldn’t have imagined covering the things I’v covered, and the things I’ve experienced and seen to have ever happened.  I’ve covered roughly 1,100-1,200 shows in NYC, with a handful of shows in Chicago, Baltimore and Philadelphia I’ve covered about a dozen or more festivals, including traveling to Montreal for M for Montreal twice — in 2019 and 2022  I’ve been a panelist at Mondo.NYC Festival and at New Colossus Festival, speaking about PR, promotion and press for indie artists, giving my perspective as a indie blogger I made a cameo in a JOVM mainstay’s music video — and it’s a very noticeable spot towards the end of the video  I’ve photographed George Clinton, Patti LaBelle, Buddy Guy, Snoop Dogg, Blondie, Nile Rodgers, Roky Erickson, Philip Bailey, Blind Boys of Alabama, and a growing list of legendary and beloved artists, as well as this site’s growing list of mainstays Back in July, I was invited to be a panelist at the inaugural Elsewhere Music Festival and Conference in Wichita, KS speaking about creating a career in music Also back in July I moderated a panel presented by The New Colossus Festival and Groover on How to Promote Your Show featuring a group of super knowledgeable friends and colleagues  Covering FME in Rouyn-Noranda, Québec With this site, I’ve managed to carve out a unique path for myself — and in the blogosphere. Because music media — and generally the media world — is an incredibly homogeneous space, the coverage that you see as a consumer and fan tends to come from a similar perspective. If you don’t believe me, look at the editorial staff at your favorite music magazine or website. It explains why certain artists, genres and styles are covered over others. But it also explains why you see the exact same coverage of the same artists, genres and styles, too.  I’m looking forward to what year 14 holds for JOVM. And hopefully with your support, I can keep this thing going. Now, as you know, I’ve said this many times: All work — including creative work — is impossible without money. After all, time is money. Effort is money. Then add all the expenses it takes to actually work.  Unsurprisingly, this site and the work that makes it possible is impossible without money. It’s a simple — and often frustrating — fact of life. So, if you’ve been frequenting this site over the past handful of years, there are a handful of folks I want to thank once again for their support:   Sash Alice Northover Bella Fox Jenny MacRostie Janene Otten  All of those folks have been generous Patreon patrons. Every and any amount really helps keeps this sort of journalism and criticism alive and ongoing. So if you’re able and willing, please feel free to check out the P...
