LULL Journey Through Underworlds
Pre-order: LINK
The classic, genre-defining 1993 album from LULL - the pioneering, isolationist dark ambient project of MICK HARRIS of SCORN, FRET, ex-NAPALM DEATH - is a dark journey through the Stygian netherworlds of Hell. The listener is left with the impression of a final escape into reality; a return upon waking, with only wispy trace memories and the heavy rush of blood-pumping fear as a keepsake.
With this album, we are plunged back into a dark pit of noise - all escape barred, all hope dashed. The nightmare continues, the journey through underworlds descends deeper. These are soundtracks for Nightmares. Despite there being just three tracks on the album, it lasts just shy of 75 minutes.
Originally released on Sentrax (the label of the late John Everall / Tactile), the CD suffered the 'disc rot' fate of many PDO pressings from 1988-1993, rendering most of that initial run unplayable.
Mixed by Justin K Broadrick (GODFLESH). Remastered by Martin Bowes (The Cage Studios) from the original recordings supplied by Mick Harris.
Matt digipak with majestic artwork by Abby Helasdottir (Gydja).

EPICA Announces 'The Alchemy Project'
Dutch symphonic metallers EPICA will release "The Alchemy Project" on November 11 through Atomic Fire Records.
In the 20 years of their existence, EPICA has never shied away from challenges, twists and turns, weathering every storm and pushing the symphonic metal genre to heights no one even dared to believe in. Since 2002, the band featuring singer Simone Simons and her longtime musical partner Mark Jansen has released eight highly innovative and cinematic albums, has toured the world over and has left its mark as one of metal’s most prolific, most cherished and most admired success stories forever.
With "The Alchemy Project", EPICA sets another highlight in the band's 20th-anniversary year. Graced by a vivid and witty artwork by graphic wizard Heilemania, visual partner in crime for more that 15 years, EPICA embarks on a journey through seven extraordinary new songs. Co-written and performed with diverse guests ranging from extremists like FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE, Niilo Sevänen (INSOMNIUM) and Björn "Speed" Strid (SOILWORK) via melodic masters like Tommy Karevik (KAMELOT),keyboard legend Phil Lanzon (URIAH HEEP) and Roel Van Helden (POWERWOLF) to a once-in-a-lifetime song with Simone Simons, Charlotte Wessels and Myrkur, the EPICA members have really outdone themselves once again. The result is a mind-bending EP that even surpasses the usual broad scope of an EPICA record.
The first song they wrote for this seven-track offering was "The Final Lullaby", a fast-paced, intense clash between EPICA and the avant-garde rock of Norwegian legends SHINING (with saxophone!),graced with one of the biggest refrains you will hear all year.
"I've been a big fan of SHINING since the first time I heard them," bassist Rob Van Der Loo says. "Our intention with 'The Final Lullaby' was to make a mash-up between EPICA and SHINING so we thought it would be a good idea if I would come up with some riffs that would be typical SHINING and they would do the complete opposite."
The seven songs on "The Alchemy Project" were co-written and performed with the following renowned guest musicians:
01. The Great Tribulation [feat. FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE] 02. Wake The World [feat. Phil Lanzon (URIAH HEEP) & Tommy Karevik (KAMELOT)] 03. The Final Lullaby [feat. SHINING] 04. Sirens - Of Blood And Water [feat. Charlotte Wessels & Myrkur] 05. Death Is Not The End [feat. Frank Schiphorst (MAYAN) & Björn "Speed" Strid (SOILWORK)] 06. Human Devastation [feat. Henri Sattler (GOD DETHRONED),Sven de Caluwé (ABORTED)] 07. The Miner [feat. Asim Searah (DAMNATION PLAN),Niilo Sevänen (INSOMNIUM),Roel Van Helden (POWERWOLF)]
"The Alchemy Project" is now available for worldwide pre-order as digipak CD, LP or digitally.

Monday, 1 April 2024:
Slum Clearance The Siddeleys (Clerendon/ Matinee Recordings) (released in 2001)
The Siddeleys are an obscure band from the UK who recorded a series of singles that jingle and jangle happily but whose lyrics are often far darker (and funny) than what their music might belie. I discovered them on (where else) God's Jukebox and was immediately smitten with their work. (I have to doff my cap to the always wise GJB member PartyTearsFew who is responsible for teaching me about The Siddeleys! She also is the one who educated me about Weyes Blood and anyone who reads this tumblr knows I am crazy for Natalie Mering's wonderous music!)
This is a pricey little CD and I was fortunate there was actually a US dealer who had a copy. I had forgotten to post this when I got it (obviously, judging from the date) because I was so excited to hear it I just popped it into my CD player (and then my car) and it seemingly has been there since the month of April began.
Johnny Johnson is the band's writer and her lyrics are exceptional. It is my understanding she is also the lead singer, but sometimes I have difficulty reconciling that voice with a woman (maybe it's just me). Regardless, I am absolutely crazy for this band and there is relatively precious little out there of them: a handful of singles, this comp and a compilation of demos.
Above you see the album cover and the back of the album. Below you will find two photos: one of the gatefold of the digipak opened up with the CD and booklet in place, then a second shot with both items removed.

The next shot reveals the front of the booklet, the booklet opened up to reveal a random page and then the back of the booklet.

Lastly, here is the CD.

Making My CD - Creating an Image
During the process of creating my digipak, I had a number of resources I gained influence and inspiration from. Ultimately, these proved to be drawn from a range of musical influences, not just trip-hop, and helped me develop some ideas for how the image I want to present my artist as should look like.
Inspiration
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Left to right)
Row 1: Seraphim - How to Disappear Completely, Modal Soul - Nujabes, Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles
Row 2: Daydream Nation - Sonic Youth, The Bela Session - Bauhaus, Silent Hill 2 Original Soundtrack - Akira Yamaoka
Row 3: The Fragile - Nine Inch Nails, Let Love In - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Mezzanine - Massive Attack
Tumblr media
Here is a selection of some albums that provided the basis for the creation of my digipak. It is worth noting that only one is a trip-hop album! The rest are an assorted mix of electronica, post-punk, fusion jazz and even a video game soundtrack. A lot of these albums provided me some inspiration in an aesthetic sense; I liked how the artists, if present on the cover, were presented to a consumer.
Taking Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' Let Love In as an example, the saccharine red background combined with Nick Cave's pallid and haunting appearance create an intoxicatingly intense presentation of both the man himself, and his music. I feel it reflects the image and idea of the band well, and serves as a unique and interesting piece of visual art to compliment the rest of the music and band.
Another common denominator that might be picked up on as well is the repeated appearance of album covers with geometric straight lines, a feature that serves as an almost internal schism between the album itself, and the band, title, image or rest of the album as a whole. Some of the albums that do this are Bauhaus' The Bela Sessions and Nine Inch Nails' The Fragile. I really liked the graphic appearance of this, and wanted to employ some variation of geometric design within my album cover.
Another feature I really liked too was the employment of black and white visuals. It's present here among the one trip-hop album featured, as well as ambient album Seraphim. Its a pretty standard convention of more edgier albums, and one that serves to fit the tone of the music as a little moodier. Its something I'd potentially like to use, but would experiment with it a little bit first to see if it does fit with my digipak and artist image.
First Draft
In the process of creating my CD, a few key ideas were on my mind. I wanted to have a classy, moody and unique cover; I also wanted it to be, though maybe initially 'artsy' seeming, intriguing to a passerby. My main goal was to make it look interesting, appealing but still fitting with the mood and tone of my music and image I was creating of my artist, Jardeeling.
As can be seen in the below image, some of the elements I discussed above made their way into the first draft of my album cover. I took all the photos used for the cover art myself, and used Photoshop in order to work with implementing text and making various adjustments to the photos.
The geometric framing was one of the things I liked the most about some of the albums I used for inspiration, and so the front cover of my album (bottom right) made use of this, imbedding the title between the confines of a window pane. The photo itself carries with it ideas of domesticity but also, I like to think, a sense of very vague foreboding. The unidentified hands drying themselves with a towel is meant to carry a level of subjectivism - what is being dried or washed? blood? water? something else? its up for the viewer to decide! I wanted to create an idea of the underbelly of domestic life, complete with a visual metaphor of dirty laundry.
The back cover, as are physical releases wont, have a track list. I gathered a bunch of my favourite songs from various artists and used them to place a homage to them in my own CD. The photo I used was a single frame from some test footage I had worked on earlier, and shows a very obscured, blurred face of my lead actor, something that I wanted to use in order to add to the moody image I was going for.
The inside cover (top right) was again another photo taken by me of an empty bar in London. In a different font to the ones previously employed, I inserted a quote from The Great Gatsby that I particularly liked, wanting to draw out ideas of retrospection and rumination within the viewer and my audience.
The CD itself was very simple. I didn't have too many ideas for what I could do with it, but I plan to expand upon it in the final version of the whole album presentation. I had a very simple winding-circle numbered track list, and artist title at the top of my CD.

Final draft coming to a blog post near you very soon...

Spoils of War, Underworld Subroxxa Edition: Managed to run into the homies of @uxsxonly at Son of @monsterpaloozaofficial and of course they had some heavy hitters for sale. For starters, They had Der Todes King (The Death King) which is still a movie living rent free in my head. Very jazzed to have this in my constantly growing @arrowvideo collection. Very bleak movies with an interesting premise. This limited edition box set comes with so many extras. The usual production book is accompanied by a certificate of Authenticity and a replica of the letter from the film. I also really dig the artwork for the digipak and the hard box. Next up, is this German media book of Dario Argento's classic gialli Opera. @laceyofthedead and I are of course still waiting to see if Opera gets a @arrowvideo 4K Box Set treatment. But this media book was too sweet to pass up. If y'all are looking for some underground gore and extreme horror, check out my homies at Underworld Subroxxa. New Post has been published on https://www.tempi-dispari.it/2022/11/08/the-alchemy-project-colpo-di-scena-degli-epica/
Le sette canzoni di “The Alchemy Project” sono state composte e suonate con i seguenti musicisti: 1) The Great Tribulation feat. Fleshgod Apocalypse 2) Wake the World feat. Phil Lanzon (Uriah Heep) & Tommy Karevik (Kamelot) 3) The Final Lullaby feat. Shining 4) Sirens – Of Blood and Water feat. Charlotte Wessels & Myrkur 5) Death is not the End feat. Frank Schiphorst (MaYaN) & Björn “Speed” Strid (Soilwork) 6) Human Devastation feat. Henri Sattler (God Dethroned), Sven de Caluwé (Aborted) 7) The Miner feat. Asim Searah (Damnation Plan), Niilo Sevänen (Insomnium), Roel van Helden (Powerwolf)

Scarecrow Ups the Wow Factor with Frenetic, Bluesy ‘II’
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
Tumblr media
Album art by Igor Odincov
The last time we encountered Russian doom-rockers extraordinaire SCARECROW, they'd just wowed us all by appearing from out of nowhere with a self-titled full-length year before last, which grabbed a foothold on the Doom Charts, premiering at no. 9 and held on tight. Subsequently, they contributed "Madman" to the breakthrough overview of the contemporary Russian heavy music scene, Doomed & Stoned in Russia (Volume 1), which came out earlier in 2021 and is slated for a sequel next month.
In October, the mighty Scarecrow once again spreads its wings over the planet, as the soulful three-piece -- raised in the region of snow leopards and Amur tigers -- takes flight with eight new songs nestled in the inauspiciously titled LP, 'II' (2021). Fans will be elated when they hear just how contagious the vibe of the new record is. If you're a newcomer to their sound, don't worry! You could start here and work your way back to Scarecrow's eponymous debut and lose none of the impact. The first two singles alone are a marvelous introduction to the band's groovy balance of powerful Ozzyesque vocals with proto-metal blues, all situated in a monster retrofitted sound machine of doom. Their bio says it best:
Instead of forming in post-war England like the first wave of British heavy rock, Scarecrow’s members grew up in the hopeless chaos of 1990s Russia. Their new album II uses those experiences to transport listeners to wastelands of earth and mind. Like their contemporaries in Graveyard, Uncle Acid, and Witchcraft, Scarecrow imbues proto-metal and classic rock with dusky occult doom and heavy electric blues.
It is said that Scarecrow could pass as one of the heaviest bands of 1969. Nay, I say heavier still. Think Sir Lord Baltimore or better still, the big dogs themselves, Led Zeppelin. What if Sabbath came first, then Zep hatched from that egg? Now you're coming closer to conceptualizing the stylistic proclivities of Scarecrow. But you shouldn't stop by drawing vintage parallels, for the music on II continues to surprise us as the record spins along. Dig the epic wall of sound that opens "The Moors," shifting us back to the realm of Candlemass following several up-tempo hard rock footstompers. We find ourselves falling into a psychedelic timewarp between past, present, and the uncertain future.
Tumblr media
There's a whole lot of "wow" on II, for sure. Throughout the record, frontman Artyom "Artimus" Nikitins expresses a vocal range that is nothing shy of impressive, reaching high notes effortlessly and with power to boot (see: "Blizzard"). You get the sense that he might even be holding back on some more "umph," but he's doubtless holding that back for just the right occasion. Artimus gives us some background on how Scarecrow's disparate influences fuse with the band's own songwriting proclivities and creative hunches.
"I would refer to predominantly English classical rock bands - Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Budgie, Leaf Hound, Steel Mill, Black Widow etc. I can go on forever. They are very close to us in spirit, because they were all ordinary guys from the provincial cities of England destroyed by the bombing. When they started their journey, they did not believe that they would become great, and did not hope for it. They just did the best they could, despite the circumstances and the hostile environment surrounding them. And this is what makes us related to them."
"Frenzied stubbornness against the background of a complete lack of hope for the best is the same fuel on which we grew up. And this is what is very well heard in our music. You know, I'm sure - the audience will not be fooled. It's one thing when you compose your music in the sampler on a brand new MacBook, between eating a muffin and drinking a smoothie in a trendy corner restaurant, and quite another thing when you are on sleepless dank nights, when 30 outside the window, sitting in your tiny room and torment your a cheap instrument, grinding riffs and passages hunched over the notes, trying to create something really worthwhile, turning your soul inside out, pouring out all your pain, fear, anxiety, despair, hopelessness, anger and hatred through your music. Only then do you get the right to sing about love, faith and hope. Only then does the music become "honest." And this essence is always heard.
Look for the new album 'II' (2021) to drop October 22nd on Wise Blood Records (pre-order here), which will also be reissuing 'Scarecrow' (2019). A must-spin for fans of Black Sabbath, Early Man, Purple Hill Witch, Goatsnake, and Electric Citizen (to name a just a few bands top-of mind) and a welcome companion to such genre-defying bands as Mr. Bungle and Boss Keloid. II will knock a lot of folks right off their high horses. Must-listen fare to break through the haze and apathy of pandemic delirium. And because we love you so much, Doomers & Stoners, we're giving you a first listen to the new single, "Magic Flower," which Doomed & Stoned is premiering today!
Give ear...
Scarecrow II by Scarecrow
Some Buzz
The Russian city of Perm is surrounded by impenetrable forests, cold swamps, and the ruins of prison labor camps. The region has a bloody history of close supervision and surveillance that started during the second World War. While the members of doom rockers Scarecrow grew up in the ‘90s, they acknowledge a “haunted prison mentality” endures in Perm to this day.
“[The ‘90s are] associated with widespread lawlessness, the dominance of crime, widespread poverty and lack of confidence in the future,” shares Scarecrow vocalist Artemis. “The country was simply divided among themselves by numerous criminal groups. The corruption in the government was monstrous, people were literally robbed and killed right on the streets, and wars were constantly going on in the periphery. The ‘90s ended long ago, but their traces do not disappear anywhere to this day. Of course, the generation that grew up in such conditions was doomed.”
While Scarecrow are part of that doomed generation, their music feels like it was pulled from the age of unrest in the late 1960s and early ‘70s. Picture Led Zeppelin if they had a doom phase, or if Leaf Hound got into occult rock and Black Sabbath instead of shrooms. Contemporary bands like Graveyard, Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats, and Witchcraft have explored their own versions of heavy and haunted electric blues. Scarecrow embodies the first wave of English heavy rock, and their new record sounds like one of the heaviest albums of 1969.
“[English proto-metal] is very close to us in spirit, because they were all ordinary guys from the provincial cities of England destroyed by the bombing,” Artemis explains. “When they started their journey, they did not believe that they would become great, and did not hope for it. They just did the best they could, despite the circumstances and the hostile environment surrounding them.”
Scarecrow II by Scarecrow
Scarecrow’s second full length—simply titled II—elevates the band’s skill and songwriting even beyond their impressive 2019 debut. The songs are familiar but fresh. Artemis wails with power and purpose. The riffs conjure treacherous weather but can radiate warmth at will. Scarecrow’s rock ‘n’ roll majesty indulges excess without losing compositional strength. The epic scale of II begins with the rumble of waves and leads the listener on a journey to wastelands of earth and mind while ruminating on the motif of time.
“[Time] does not just flow away from us like water,” Artemis writes, “it crushes us like ocean waves crash ships.”
Scarecrow’s doom rock will lure you to the ocean when Wise Blood Records releases II digitally and on Digipak CD within the United States on October 22nd. Scarecrow’s debut will also finally be available in the states. Make time and listen to Scarecrow summon the sunset.

The album “Seven“ was deeply inspired by the seven deadly sins. It’s not about the Christian tradition but more about calling todays society into question and interpreting them in a more contemporary way. Lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride, be they sins or not, can still be applied nowadays. We’re confronted with them all the time.

Today's single, 'Sapphire', is another magical creation blending shadows and light - the video was directed by Craig Murray (Mogwai, etc) and you can watch it here. Bandleader Neige comments: "Here’s 'Sapphire', the second single from our upcoming album 'Spiritual Instinct'. This one was also written in a very spontaneous, liberating way and has this 80’s post-punk feel that could remind of The Cure, The Chameleons, or even our older side project Amesoeurs. Hope you guys enjoy it."

WEEK 25 (part 4)
Day 2 started much earlier as we had many interior scenes to shoot. We went over the scenes for the day and discussed our prop list to make sure we didn't forget any important items.Due to having an interior location we used external lighting for most of our scenes.
The first scene we started shooting was the moving scene. We ordered boxes and some other props that had to be set up right before filming
Tumblr media
As that was being done the director explained the scene to them , this scene had to be taken multiple times as we were taking a master shot followed by over the shoulder shots. Their actions had to match so there would be no issues in continuity. This scene had to be divided into two. Day and night. For the day scene we used external lighting and slightly increased the ISO.The camera takes a master shot to depict both the actors and the environment they are in it is also used to give them an equal presence on screen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next scene consisted of the older version of our Characters, this is actually the first scene in the music video. The camera movement for this scene was tracking as we tracked Ayaans hand from the caravan to him sitting on the sofa. This shot had to be taken 5-6 times as it was a hand-held shot hence there was a tendency for the camera to get jerky despite this we chose the one that seemed the smoothest. Another shot we took was a mid shot while zooming in and zooming out, this was done to match the younger version of Ayaan.
Tumblr media
After this we had a 30 minute break and we spent a few minutes taking shots for our digipak. We thought this background was meaningful and natural and shows them in an environment that they are the most comfortable in.
Tumblr media
When our break ended we went back to filming our next scene. This scene was important as it would make the audience understand what's going to happen next and why it is going to happen. This was a Two shot and we took over the shoulder shots as well. This scene was comparatively harder to film and longer as the actors were not professional actors and needed help in dialogue delivery.
Tumblr media
The next scene was the hospital scenes. These were divided into two.One was where Aisha was dead in the hospital and the other is her coughing up blood. High angle shot was taken in order to show how vulnerable Aisha was in this scene and how her secret was finally getting exposed.
Tumblr media
The next scene was a dance scene, we couldn’t film a farewell scene so we decided to film this instead. The shot was handheld and we used zoom in and zoom out camera movement to show the characters expressions and emotions when the characters are “having a moment” . This shot is captured as one of their most recent memories before Aisha passes away.
Tumblr media
The last scene was the Library scene. The shots taken during this scene was a master shot, two shot and over the shoulder shots. These scenes were comparatively easier to shoot as the actors knew what exactly they had to do. This was our last shot for the day. We were satisfied with all the content we filmed and then packed up for the day.
