January Giallo Day 15 Twitch of the Death Nerve (AKA A Bay of Blood) I saw in an interview that this was one of @edgarwright's favorite films and then I also recently found out that this was the inspiration for Friday the 13th. Both are very solid reasons to watch this movie. I'm so mad at myself for not watching this sooner. This movie is so fuckin great. I can't necessarily agree with it being the start of giallo, since Argento released The Bird With The Crystal Plumage a year earlier. But this is most definitely the birth of the slasher. This movie really does have it all. A brutal body count, great practical effects, the story is bonkers, but not impossible to follow. There's also kill scenes that Friday most definitely ripped, but in a homage way. My only, and very minor, issue was with the last 2 mins. The ending was a little too silly for me. But it doesn't ruin the experience. This is definitely one I hope @arrowvideo does a 4K Box of. Spoils of War, An American Werewolf In London Edition: Our very awesome friends, @irishsamurai82 and @the_sharp_edge, gifted us these amazing additions to our collection. I've been wanting to pick up the Kessler Werewolf from @necaofficial since it's release. But unfortunately, every time I've seen it in the wild (pun intended) it was too jacked up to warrant a purchase. But luckily now I don't have to, cause that beast is finally where he belongs. Then, as an added surprise. They tossed in an actual film cell from the movie. Which is way too cool!! It's from the transformation scene!! Edgar Wright Challenge Even though I feel like I've revisited the Scream franchise not too long ago, I thought it would be fun to just rewatch them before getting to 6. People can disagree with me all they want, but I really enjoyed 3 and 4. Obviously, the first one is by the best. But outside of some minor complaints, I thought 2 through 4 are very solid. I really don't like 5 and 6... Well, 6 is ok. I hate the ending, though. After that, some old favorites with a new favorite peppered in for good measure. Spoils of War, Xmas 2022 Edition: I'm so behind on posts due to work. But better late than never. Here's @laceyofthedead spoiling me as usual for Xmas last year. The bluray player is region free, and I've been wanting one for a really long time. Than Horrizon: Forbidden West is amazing. I've been playing it for a while now and I'm close to done with it and getting the platinum. I tried Deathloop for a little bit, and it was really fun. Definitely going to have to dive back into that after Forbidden West. Then, of course, she hooks it up with the new @kreatorofficial CD. Which is so fuckin good. And as a hilarious surprise, she gets me the soundtrack to Popstar. Which is one of my favorite movies. And lastly, she scored me a bottle of W. L. Weller. Which is definitely one of the best bourbons I've ever had. So smooth. Overall. Back in November, this beast of a set came in. I actually preordered this set first, but there was no way in Hell I was going to wait 3 months after release to listen to the record. So that's why I got the CD long box. This is definitely a top 5 @machine_head record for me. It's just so damn good. As for this set, the slipmat has been on my turntable since I opened it. The MH pin is in my MH denim jacket, and it took a couple of extra months and I never took a picture of it, but the patch is with all my other MH patches for a possible project I want to do. Super jazzed to add the vinyl to my collection. Spoils of War, More Movies Edition: Here's a nice stack of movies I haven't posted about yet. I managed to score a copy of @severinfilms Four Flies on Grey Velvet 4k this past holiday. Haven't watched the transfer yet, but I'm definitely jazzed in adding to my @darioargento_official collection. My bro, Martin from @playitbyfear, also found me a copy with the limited slip of Argentos The Card Player. I actually liked this one quite a bit. Felt more true to form than some of his other 2000s releases. @laceyofthedead had to surprise me for Valentines with a steelbook copy of Tommy Boy. Which is one of our favorite movies ever. It gets quoted at least once a week. It Follows was from our bro @videoshockrocks and his weekly claim sale. We needed the upgrade from the standard edition. Hellboy and Starship Troopers are both 4K and came from Best Buy. No way could pass those up. The art on both are amazing, and the movies are too good not to get the 4K upgrade. And lastly, my bro @doccoyle gifted me a copy of Reservoir Dogs on 4K. I haven't watched this classic in years, and @laceyofthedead hasn't even seen it. I'm so super jazzed to revisit this one. This isn't even all the movies. January Giallo Day 31 Suspiria There's not too much more to say about my love for this film that I haven't already said. There's no way I can watch a months worth of gialli and not watch the movie that started my love for the genre. Even though I literally just watched it with the score performed live by @claudiosimonettisgoblin. Along with some other greats, this is a yearly watch for me at this point. Doesn't get old at all. Plus, @arrowvideo really needs to make that 4K Box Set happen already. Inferno @laceyofthedead has never seen this film. I've only watched it once before and I needed a rewatch for sure. I remember digging it, and I'm so ready for @arrowvideo to finally release a 4K box of this along side all the other @darioargento_official films they already have. Watching these first 2 mothers back to back definitely gives more appreciation to Inferno. Love the color play, and the sets. My main issue with this film is certian scenes feel long and dragged out. The story suffers a little because of it. This might be a US cut thing and maybe the Italian version is better. I don't know. Unfortunately this is the only version I've seen on @shudder and @tubi. Either way, a solid close out to January Giallo. Saw a lot of unseen and under appreciated gialli. Most were fantastic, some dropped the ball a little. January Giallo Day 30 The New York Ripper I had to go with a nice grimey giallo for tonight, and this one is a pure grime and sleaze. This is definitely one of the weirdest movies I've ever seen. A killer that disguises his voice like Donald Duck is not something I thought I'd want to watch, let alone actually seriously enjoy. Especially enough to own the now OOP @blueundgroundfilms limited edition with lenticular slip. But as a giallo, it's good a solid story. The duck voice at first is impossible to take seriously. You have to laugh at it. Then it keeps happening, and the murders get more and more brutal. It starts to get creepy watching the brutality and listening to a dude quack. Don't get me wrong, it's hard not to laugh. But upon first learning about this film, I figured it would ruin the movie. And it strangely doesn't. Edgar Wright Challenge Day 30 Infinity Pool So even though it's January Giallo, gotta make sure I stay current on my most anticipated films. Once I heard @brandoncronenberg was making a new movie, I was 100% on board. Antiviral and Possessor are both amazing, so I expect nothing less from Infinity Pool. I really enjoyed this movie. It's so far out there in terms of creativity and style. @officialmiagoth is so good in this. This is another world that I want more of. A deeper explanation of the science of it all. Same as Possessor. Film just throws you in blind. January Giallo Day 29 The Last Matinee Picked another recent favorite of mine and definitely a modern take on giallo. I managed to score the now OOP @vinegarsyndrome cope with exclusive slip AND the @arrowvideo limited edition with slip and poster. I really enjoyed this movie. There's no nudity, which makes sense since the story doesn't call for it. But its compensation is a metric ass ton of blood and gore. I haven't seen this much eyeball trauma since the old school Fulci films. The premise is really creepy, too. A random psychopath just goes on a calculated murder spree in a dark and almost empty movie theater. For what seems like no other reason than he enjoys it.
