Thank you for that rip of 'to the beginning'! I have to admit, hearing Keiko sing Hikaru's parts in the verses definitely gave me chills if the good sort, though I'll always miss the three-person variant. I know that Wakana has covered Hikarifuru at a live once before, and personally, I'm dying to see Hikaru do a cover of a Kalafina song publically sometime soon. It won't be the same, but regardless, I think it would be great to hear! Your thoughts?

You are very welcome! I was hesistant to share it since you can still buy a streaming ticket to watch the archived version until December 23. But I thought it would maybe serve as an incentive for people to support Keiko and purchase a ticket.

While “to the beginning” is one of my least favourite Kalafina songs and May’n almost ruined it with her voice, I was still SUPER happy to hear Keiko sing it (it honestly made me a little teary-eyed). Her leading parts as well as her harmonies were absolutely flawless. This made me realise how very much I had missed her deep vocals. She does use her lower registers in some of her solo songs but most of them are sung in a higher key and with her “cutesy”/generic voice.

I have been lucky enough to attend events/lives where both Wakana and Hikaru were covering a bunch of Kalafina songs by themselves. And now I finally got to hear Keiko cover a Kalafina song as well. *is a happy fangirl*

I know there are some fans who do not care for the solo versions but I personally really like their self-covers. Kalafina’s music means the world to all three of them and it also means a lot to the fans so I see no reason why they should not continue to sing those songs as solo artists.

I loved ALL of Hikaru’s covers (ARIA, sprinter, blaze) so far because she wisely chose songs that had her as leading vocalist in the original version. This way, she could make it work and make the songs her own without them sounding too lacking, at least in my opinion. Unfortunately I doubt we will get an official release of any of her covers in the near future. She might sing some during her upcoming live but there’s little to no chance of a recording.

Wakana was the lead in 90% of Kalafina’s discography so I think she can pull off (and HAS SUCCESSFULLY pulled off) almost every song by herself (with the exception of the ones she struggled with even back then as part of the group, e.g. “ring your bell”, “Eden”). Of course you will inevitably notice the absence of Keiko and Hikaru but for the most part I have thoroughly enjoyed Wakana’s Kalafina covers and will continue to look forward to them. Keeping my fingers crossed she will cover the one or the other Kalasong at her Anime Classic Live next week.

Keiko did an awesome job covering “to the beginning” but she chose the wrong person to accompany her. I am not even sure there is a right person. I don’t mind the girls singing each other’s parts in their covers but I really do not want “outsiders” to interfere, especially ones like May’n who stick out like a sore thumb with their nasal vocals. It’s like that one time LiSA sang “Kagayaku Sora no Shijima ni wa” together with Keiko or when Hironobu Kageyama sang “Lacrimosa” with Kalafina. *shudders* Some things are just not meant to be and one of those things is people with the most generic anison voices singing Kalafina songs. A literal crime. It causes me physical pain.

I am still wondering how they will handle the Kalafina covers in upcoming YK events and lives. Of course I do have faith in Yuki and I am secretely hoping they will mostly stick to Hikaru/Keiko-heavy songs so the other FJ utahimes won’t have to sing too many of Wakana’s lines. But at least we know that Joelle and Yuriko are up for the challenge (Kaori not so much). If push comes to shove, they can definitely deliver a solid cover of Wakana’s parts that doesn’t clash with the overall vibe of the song or Keiko’s/Hikaru’s vocals.

Hi Sarah! I don't think you've answered this before, but if you have, I'm so sorry! Of each of the girls' solo work, what is your favourite for each of them, Wakana, KEIKO and H-el-ical//? I'm not quite as familiar with Wakana and Hikaru's work (though I've listened to them at least once!) but my current favourite from KEIKO is probably Inochi no Hana! Curious to know what you like the most!

No worries, my answer to this particular question is not definitive so I don’t mind talking about my favourite songs every once in a while.

I will have to say though that it is EXTREMELY difficult for me to limit myself to a single song. Nevertheless I will try to do my best and choose only one song for each of them. I think I gravitate most towards Wakana’s solo work because her style is more or less up my alley. She has also released a lot more music than Hikaru and Keiko so naturally I have quite a few favourites when it comes to her songs (which makes my choice considerably harder). It pains me to say this but it’s been a struggle to really get into KEIKO’s music, I do like almost all of her 9 solo songs to some extent but meh, it’s not like I find myself wanting to actively listen to them. It’s a good thing I made those MP3s of her live stream concert because this way I can get a little more familiar with her work.

Wakana: “breathing” It was either “breathing” or “Ai no Hana”. But recently I have definitely been listening to “breathing” more often. Especially the live version from her winter concert. It’s so gorgeous!

Hikaru//: “yolcu” Once again, I wasn’t sure whether to choose “yolcu” or “Avaricia” but ultimately I would have to go with “yolcu” since I enjoy that song as a whole whereas I am not such a huge fan of “Avaricia”’s verses.

KEIKO: “Inochi no Hana” Like you I really love “Inochi no Hana”. What can I say, I am a sucker for ballads! “Nanairo no Finale” is slowly growing on me too though and I feel it will soon become my favourite

Hi Sarah! While everyone is on ARIA/sprinter, that's reminded me of something. There are two main versions of sprinter out there, the studio, faster version and a slower, with strings version found in their lives. I was wondering if you knew which of their lives they sang the faster version of sprinter, since most of the lives seem to contain the slow version. I was able to find one live, where they're wearing I think is their merch, but I'd love to know if there are more performances too.

Huh, I wonder why you think that.Σ(‘◉⌓◉’) Actually, there is only one official video release that features the slow acoustic version of “sprinter” (Arena Live 2016), in all other lives they are singing the normal version (there are a couple of official audio recordings of the acoustic version though so maybe that’s what’s throwing you off).

Anyways, you are referring to their Red Moon Live I suppose. They sang “sprinter” during the encore (back when they still wore their tour-shirts for the encore). As far as I know, we have the following officially released/broadcast  live performances of “sprinter”  (studio version)〈(•ˇ‿ˇ•)-→

Hi Sarah, it's me again, here to ask another song-related question. So I've always appreciated the harmonies and vocals of our three utahimes, but lately I was listening to Magia and I realised just how lovely I find it. It's always been a favourite song, but I found a whole new appreciation for Hikaru's voice and how Wakana and Keiko harmonise with her there. So my question for you is whether there's been any Kalafina song you look back on and realise you really appreciate it?

Hmmm, I guess for me that would be “sprinter”. Then again, I didn’t originally appreciate that song so maybe that answer doesn’t fit your question? It’s not so much a “new kind of appreciation” that I have for “sprinter” but rather a “I finally saw the light” situation XD

I never listened to “sprinter”, like AT ALL (I always skipped it - even though I knew it was meant to connect Kalafina with the fans but for some reason I coulnd’t get into it). But when I watched that acoustic rendition from their Arena Live, I fell madly in love. The rawness, the emotion, the bond being created between them and the audience, it’s utter perfection. This was actually the first time I had properly listened to the lyrics. I was so intrigued that I searched for the lyrics online and spent an hour dissecting them.

This has made me appreciate all versions of the song.

I think “Natsu no Ringo” may be a better answer to your question actually. Because I have always really loved the song but in recent years my love has grown so much stronger. The song is honestly flawless. Especially that version from their Red Moon live when Hikaru was still in charge of more sections in the song. Back then she SLAYED. But to be honest, it’s Wakana’s part that really does it for me, I cannot get enough of her in this song. Also, the harmonies between Wakana and Keiko, ahhhh, poetry should exist about the perfection that is WaKei harmony.
