And our local Wigan (Greater Manchester) business, who work in the plumbing industry, recently added another to their fleet with the affable BMW iX3 SUV. Available since 2021, this option has been a stalwart of the UK’s personal and business electric car fleets. Based on the X3, but in lithium-ion format, this family-friendly EV has been immensely popular for us in 2023. But moving into 2024, expect the newer iX1 and iX2 to have a more significant impact.

And how does the BMW iX3 perform? The RWD has a 74 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 6.8 seconds, 112 mph top speeds and 210 kW (or 282hp). Expect a combined winter range of 200 miles with warmer weather allowing for 270 miles. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 8 hour 0 – 100% charging times with the 155 kW DC maximum allowing 31-minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 510L is available with this car. It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 131 mpg. You can tow 750 kg (unbraked) and 750 kg (braked). It also has no V2L or V2G capabilities.

BYD already has an electric bus manufacturing plant in the northwestern Hungarian city of Komarom, but the planned Szeged factory would be the first major consumer EV production facility in Europe for a Chinese electric car manufacturer(..)

There is some truth to her argument. A BYD Dolphin sells for €28,990 in France but only €15,200 (116,800 yuan) in China. An MG ZS sells for €31,310 in Germany but only €15,600 (119,800 yuan) in China. The Zeekr X sells for €44,990 in Germany but only €24,700 (189,800 yuan) in China. Those numbers seem to support von der Leyen’s statement but a BMW iX3 that sells for €67,300 in Germany costs €51,800 (405,000 yuan) in China, a difference that can be largely attributed to the cost of shipping between the two countries.

P.S. But this argument can be reliably turned in the opposite direction as well: "European outdated car companies artificially keep the prices of electric cars too high and produce poorly designed compliance electric cars in order not to damage the investment of these companies in their fossil car business!" ...

BYD's future production facility in Hungary means that the EU will no longer be able to protect its inefficient legacy companies with customs barriers, just as German politicians are unable to save VW from competition from Tesla. Giga Berlin is a much more efficient factory than any VW factory next door...!

BYD makes a profit of 15,400 USD on BYD Seal U in Europe, compared to 1,400 USD in China. This means BYD makes 14,000 USD more profit, referred as EU premium, on every Seal U model sold in the EU, according to a report by Rhodium Group. – Advertisement – On June 12, the European Commission (EC) investigation revealed that China’s battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and supply chains receive unfair subsidies. As a result, the EC has introduced provisional import duties on Chinese-made EVs, ranging from 17.4% to 38.1%, depending on the manufacturer. These new duties are in addition to the existing 10% tariffs. According to Rhodium Group, the 30% duty on the BYD Seal U (see specs) would not be enough to make the profits on the car equal between the EU and China, meaning the playing field would still be uneven. A 30% duty would still leave the company with a 15% (5,080 USD) EU premium in relation to its China profits. This means BYD would still make over 5,000 USD more on Seal U sold in the EU than in China. That would keep the exports to Europe highly attractive. – Advertisement – Moreover, duties at this level would provide BYD with space to lower its prices in order to gain market share in Europe. “Our analysis of several other models sold in China and Germany indicates that even after a 30% duty, many Chinese EV models would still enjoy a strong EU profit premium,” Rhodium notes.
