“Liz Stanley was active in gay liberation in the same town as John Shiers, Manchester, from 1971 until 1977. She has written about why she left the mixed gay movement in the anthology On the Problem of Men (1982). To underline the significance of her disillusionment she emphasises that, 'Once upon a time I experienced my relationships with gay men as a paradigm of what "liberated relationships" between women and men might be like.' . . .

She set out to be Women's Organiser in the local CHE [Campaign for Homosexual Equality]. The womanhating responses she received were not the main reason she left, though they included the following:

Attempting to get women involved in CHE was an attack on the gay movement, which belonged to men. All women should be barred from it.

Along with these routine insults Stanley cites numerous examples of gay male sexual behaviour and ideas about sex which finally formed the theoretical base for her political severance from the mixed gay movement. One example is the attitude of her gay male friends to the obscene phone calls which lesbians womanning the advice phone service received from, presumably, heterosexual men.

'The content of the obscene phone calls, and the reactions of gay and straight men to talks and papers given about them, were remarkably similar. The obscene phone callers, gay men in the gay movement, and straight men in academic circles and in left groups all found the calls arousing. What they found arousing was the phallic imagery, the violence, and the insistence on. 'doing' sex to other people. It was nothing, or only peripherally, to do with anything about women in the calls - instead it was the cock, the almighty penis, that they all reacted to.

What, in particular they found arousing was the power the penis gave them, its centrality in the lives of all people, its ability to be used so as to impose their will on other people.

Stanley concluded that gay men would not and did not pay any attention to the demands or ideas of lesbian feminists if such attention would interfere with the satisfying of what they saw as their sexual needs.

What I suggest that this means, in relation to gay men, is quite simply this: if it cuts down on the amount of time and opportunity they have for fucking each other, then gay men won't do it. In other words, I feel that the only possible interpretation of 'maleness', the 'needs of men', is purely and simply sex. And sexual 'needs' of a very particular kind . . . these are the needs to behave in sexist, objectifying, unemotional and entirely phallocentric ways.

The oppression of lesbians, Stanley recognised, ‘is quite different from the oppression of gay men.’ Lesbians were threatening to both heterosexual and gay men because their lives were not organised around the penis, and the penis is in no way necessary to lesbian existence. Feminism was a problem for gay men because the success of the feminist project would inevitably interfere with the sexual lifestyle of gay men. In a feminist society the 'essentials of phallocentrism are challenged and dismantled' and the lifestyle of the 'average' gay man would come to an end.”

Backgrounds on “Remembering” and “Dreaming in Blonde”

Both of these poems are pieces that I really love - both written in 2022, the initial about the same boy I wrote “uncomfortable silence” about and the latter written/based on myself, as I’ve slowly been coming to my senses with my sexuality and as I’m still coming to terms with who I am as a person. I absolutely love the first and last verses of “dreaming…”, because I think it captures my mind in an incredible way - or at least the best way I could at the time of writing.

“Sleepless night are out of purpose 

Clouds coming down on my head 

But the dreams are ever changing 

And I am left on my bed”

those last lines of that poem are some of my favorite I’ve written of all time, and for some reason they took me quite a while to come up with. The poem was basically finished for some months with the exception of those lines - I had written it in like half an hour to an hour just without those four lines and I couldn’t come up with the right ending to it for the longest time. When it did finally arrive I had felt sooo relieved, because even though these lines may be pretty simple, I love the way the capture the universal feeling of feeling scared of growing up.
