Brady the smoky diesel
Finally, his story is finished! I'm sorry it took so long but I'm slower with writing than drawing. Also dentist got in the way I guess, I have a root canal on Halloween.
This oc belongs to me AND @saragaragrahra
Tumblr media
(Praying that tumblr doesn't compress it so much)
Story is below the cut! I wrote it in google docs and pasted it here so forgive me for any formatting errors
The sun started to set and welcome the moon up in the sky. The orange hue of dawn complimented the livery of the scruffy diesel shooting down tracks right beside a busy highway. Work wasn't over for the diesel even as the sun disappeared from his view. He pulled long freight trains night and day, most times coupled rear to rear to another diesel when heading a train. He appreciated the rare times he got to head a train alone. As Brady continued on his way, he could practically feel the stares and side eyes of buses and cars passing on the highway. He’d sneer and scoff, but being tired from the long day and his faulty engine encouraged him not to. Smoke had already begun building up.
The old diesel wheezed, each cough spewed more smoke than the last. His eyes started to water and his windows fogged. His driver slowed him to a stop, the conductor letting out a long sigh when Brady's wheels screeched against the rails.
“Again?”
Brady could only faintly hear the conductor, her voice distant as she set her feet onto the ballast.
“What'dya expect? He's an old guy”
Brady let the smallest bit of a smile set onto his lips as he heard his driver. The driver always referred to him like he was a person, not simply an old diesel made only for freight. He still had hopes and such.
He wheezed once again and accidently spewed smoke right into the face of the conductor. She coughed almost immediately after, sounding like she was hacking up both her lungs. Brady furrowed his brows in sympathy and remorse took over his expression.
“I didn't see you!” Brady quickly exclaimed, muttering a quiet apology afterwards.
“It's okay big guy, you didn't mean to.” The conductor shushed the diesel. Concern embedded itself into her expression as she looked up at him. The diesel was able to get a good look at her now as the smoke dissipated.
Brown fluffy curls and eyes that he's heard the driver describe as chocolate chip cookies. The conductor was taller than most humans he's seen, even if he hasn't seen many people apart from his own crew and other workers on his railway. Maybe she was the tallest, but he didn’t have much reference for human height other than his crew.
Brady only watched as his conductor stepped up onto his footplate, her slippers barely making a sound against the metal stairs. She got up close and personal as she had to give him a quick
look over. His lips pursed together when his conductor's expression grew uneasy. He was easy at reading his crew since he considered them the closest thing to family, second to his sisters.
The conductor made sure to be gentle as she got Brady ready to continue, even brushing down the scruffy fur on his face. “Ready, big guy?” She asked as she stepped back, her hand gripped onto the railing. Brady only gave her a deep hum of his engine in response. She gave a quick sigh back before stepping down the metal steps to join back with Brady’s driver in his cab.
The way back to the yard wasn’t that long but it sure felt like miles. Brady huffed and grunted to keep the smoke from building once again, each sound he made seemed pained. He could hear the muffled voices of his conductor and driver in his cab above. Their voices were still filled with concern, even if Brady didn't hear what they were saying now.
Brady didn't even try to focus on what his crew was talking about as discomfort built up in his engine. He didn't notice he had zoned out until he heard his crew step out onto the familiar gravel of the yard. He finally let a sigh of relief slip from his lips, finally in the welcoming arms of the yard.
It was a busy, loud place. In no way could Brady call it peaceful but he could call it his home.
“Brady!”
Another engine called out to the diesel and immediately stole his attention. The engine was one of his older sisters, Barbara, but as he called her..
“Babs!”
Brady spoke fondly with a smile back on his face.
“How was yer run?” She asked him while slowing to a stop on the track next to Brady. She faced the other way as she was already ready to head out of the yard for a night run.
“Well, as my driver would put it, shitty.” He answered in his usual gruff voice, scratchy and deep from years of smoke.
She gave a sympathetic look since she was no stranger to Brady's troubles. “Think they'll send ya off for repairs? It already looks like they're considering it”
Brady paused for a long second. He glanced back at his crew, who were already talking to someone he didn't recognize. Though he could recognize what the man was wearing.
It was an engineer.
It wasn't the first time he's seen them after so many inspections, but the engineer was here for him now. He felt a bit uneasy at the thought of being sent away. Despite his engine problems, he hadn't been sent away for repairs and they only gave his crew short term solutions.
But even at the thought of being in such an unfamiliar place, he was relieved that his engine might finally be fixed
“I hope..” He sighed and looked back towards his sister. His bushy brows had been furrowed in thought, but softened at the sight of Babs.
“I wish the best for ya” Babs smiled at Brady, canine-like teeth bared in a strangely friendly way. “I… need to go now, see ya in the morning”
Brady was barely able to say a quick farewell before Babs’ horn blared loudly as she huffed away.
“Oh- Farewell” He sighed, unsure if Babs even heard it.
After his sister’s departure, his attention was naturally drawn back to his crew. Brady focused on the engineer that his driver was speaking with. The diesel could easily tell he was not in a good mood. The man’s eyebrows were furrowed and his cheeks wrinkled with a deep frown. He was frustrated to be working on Brady soon. The diesel could only speculate why, but he didn’t want to dwell on it. His crew was always excited to work alongside him and that was all he needed.
He saw his driver had a clipboard and it wasn’t the first time he’s seen it. Almost everytime his engine failed, his crew was always writing something down. His best guess was simply that they needed to document his issues.
Brady continued to watch the two as they seemed to be seriously discussing the diesel’s engine issues. The engineer only grew more frustrated, eyeing up the diesel occasionally. His driver, in contrast, was determined to have his issues fixed. No matter if the engineer was a stick in the mud, deeply in the mud.
“I’m not sure if it's worth fixing it if its engine fails this much.” The engineer sneered. “It’s more cost effective to send him for sc-”
“No.” Brady’s driver cut the engineer off with an assertive tone. “Your job is to fix him.”
Brady didn’t bother to listen more after he heard what was suggested. He knew his driver could handle it alone. His conductor was trying to get his attention anyway. He looked over at the familiar lady. His expression immediately softened and a smile spread across his lips once again. Her footsteps were heavy as she stepped up his footplate.
“Are you feeling alright big guy?” The same look of concern from earlier was still on her face. She reached out, offering a comforting touch as she brushed her fingers through the diesel’s fluff. He only gave a huff in response, already tired from the long day.
She sighed in conjunction with him.
“You’ll get fixed…” His conductor crouched down to be closer to his face. She spoke as she gave his fluff a pat. “I promise.”
“Are you really sure?” Brady asked, an unfamiliar fear creeping up in his mind. He was always aware he wasn’t safe from scrap, not even his sisters were. No engine was forever safe, he knew that, but now he was facing the real possibility.
“I’m sure.” His conductor was more than sure deep down. “We’re not going to work with any diesel but you for as long as we live.”
She spoke for both herself and Brady’s driver, protective over the diesel like a mother.
“Thank you” The diesel spoke, his voice softer than it usually was.
For once he was sure, he was safe from scrap.

Sorry for not posting a lot for a while. I’ve been working on these guys since I made a list of my characters. Apparently, Scorpio was the only diesel in sunny side island! so I decided to make three more diesels. Rob, Damien, and cotton spider! You can tell who is the customer is diesel and the ones are just normal! As you can tell cotton spider is like a spider like diesel who gets a job quick and smart but also flirty~ Damien is this gentle diesel who loves to help out, and when kids draw drawings of them or himself as a gift, he will hang them in his shed((of course, with workers help)) now with Rob is a different story. Yes, he is a grumpy type diesel and a big is from the bunch unlike Scorpio, but from the grumpiness in this grouchy behavior-without anyone looking for a gentle soul, you just need to find a good ways to get it out. Otherwise, they are a good pair of working diesels and they don’t care if their friends are steam engines or other diesels. They treat each other like great pals or at least Rob tries to…
Human form so I’ll be in the next part of this so be prepared !!!

This is Sparky, The Guardian Of The Mystic Night, a train OC I stumbled upon under the Chuggington tag a while ago created by a friend of @captain1unikitty. Now with their permission, here is the adorable little spirit engine in a full-on Chugger design:
Tumblr media
Original (Not my art):
Tumblr media
According to captain1unikitty, Sparky is based on a BNSF locomotive, right down to their iconic orange, yellow and black/dark green livery
Tumblr media
As her own drawing of Sparky was a simplistic little doodle, and with the fact that Chuggington is notorious for creative liberities when adapting real-life engines into their characters, I tried to make Sparky's chugger design unique by giving him a little more curvature on his face and roof, and by incoporating gold into his railings, window frames, chassis, and headlight, and added some extra headlights on his front end, and one on his roof, to sell that "magic spirit engine" look to him.
This is not an OC will be adapting into my headcanon out of respect for the creator but I'm still pleased with how it turned out, it was pretty easy and fun to do. We've seen magic steam engines from the likes of Thomas and Polar Express before but never a magical diesel engine, and one that is supposedly a Chuggington OC no less. Hope you enjoy. ✌️

This 👇 is still a common occurrence also.
Friday’s commute along parts of Highway 2 may be a bit slow in Hall County, as a train has derailed near Cairo, Nebraska.
According to Hall County Emergency Manager John Rosenlund, 57 coal cars derailed and coal spilled everywhere. BNSF is on the site cleaning up the train, which does not pose a hazard to the public. The train is currently blocking all crossings from High Street (Highway 11) to 110th Road.
People are urged to stay away from the area as crews work to replace the cars and get the train back on track.

Eastbound BNSF Intermodal Train at Floyd, MO by Zach Pumphery Via Flickr: Another snow squall moves through as BNSF Train Z SBDWSP4 13U blasts by the elevators at Floyd on the BNSF Marceline Sub. down Main Track 1 with engineer Scott Krause at the helm once again. I don't remember the last time we had such constant snow around here, but today another inch fell in the KC area, so I took advantage of the conditions. Late for Halloween but introducing a special boi.
Demidicus, his human au design
He's a BNSF diesel engine owned by a wine making company, which he transports goods for. In recent years as the company grows he's been doing extra work, such as supplying building materials for new vineyards and even being rented out to other railways for goods work.
I might be able to sketch his engine version tomorrow.
And this diesel enjoys his fuel a little.. Differently. 🤫

Ups and downs by Dean Sauvola Via Flickr: Another coal empty loops down off a ridge east of Osage, WY. Even though the Black Hills Sub only traces the edge of that namesake feature it doesn't mean the route CB&Q blazed to the northwest is flat. Much of the Black Hills Sub could be described as "rolling" alternately crossing ridges and steams that originate in the Black Hills just to the northeast. At the bottom of this particular dip the mainline crosses Skull Creek, a mere 530 miles west of Lincoln, NE. I like how the rounded bottoms of the coal gondolas echo the fuel tanks on the power. Saturday Sunrise at the Stateline (3 of 3)
flickr
Saturday Sunrise at the Stateline (3 of 3) by Greg Brown Via Flickr: Back in the DINK (Double Income, no Kids) days, we usually went to Klamath Falls for Memorial Day weekend. In 1996, we maintained the tradition. On the way home from work Friday afternoon, we saw Southern Pacific makinq up the Los Angeles bound Swift RoadRailer at Brooklyn Yard in Southeast Portland. The Portland-LA RoadRailer had just entered revenue service a couple of months earlier. I got up before sunrise in Klamath on Saturday morning, hoping to intercept the RoadRailer somewhere. At the time, I didn't know that you could use SP's car tracing 800 number to find the location of the RoadRailer trailers. My plan was to go to the Oregon/California stateline, listen to the scanner, and see what developed. As I left Klamath Falls, I saw a northbound BNSF train entering the SP at Bieber Line Junction. Burlington Northern had been merged with Santa Fe the previous September, but the new BNSF had made no blatant operational changes at Klamath Falls. Trains still ran with cabooses, in deference to the hand throw turnouts on Oregon Trunk sidings. Chatter between BN/BNSF crews was often a good source of information. It would prove to be so today. Not long after I arrived at the stateline, a westbound SP drag came into view. It had four units running elephant style, including a Conrail GE and a Rio Grande tunnel motor. As the train passed, I thought about taking off south and chasing it - until the scanner gave me the traffic report I was waiting for. The SP dispatcher had advised the BNSF train that he would hold at the east end of Klamath Falls Yard for one train before he could enter the main and head for Bend. When that train arrived at Klamath, here's what I heard on the BNSF road channel: BNSF Engineer: Wait 'til you see the train they stuck us for. You won't believe it!" BNSF Conductor: "How so?" BNSF Engineer: "This poor SP is gettin' so hard up, they can't even afford flatcars for their pig trains!" About 25 minutes later, the RoadRailer rolled through Worden, climbed the big fill on the mid-60s line change at the Lake Miller dry lake bed, and passed me. It was the start of a great chase that ended late that morning in the Sacramento River Canyon. In this image, the westbound RoadRailer is approaching the Oregon/California state line. A dozen years earlier, when SP 4449 was enroute to New Orleans, there were at least 100 photographers here.

Trains are really unpredictable. Even in the middle of a forest two rails can appear out of nowhere, and a 1.5-mile fully loaded coal drag, heading east out of the low-sulfur mines of the PRB, will be right on your ass the next moment.I was doing laundry in my basement, and I tripped over a metal bar that wasn't there the moment before. I looked down: "Rail? WTF?" and then I saw concrete sleepers underneath and heard the rumbling.Deafening railroad horn. I dumped my wife's pants, unfolded, and dove behind the water heater. It was a double-stacked Z train, headed east towards the fast single track of the BNSF Emporia Sub (Flint Hills). Majestic as hell: 75 mph, 6 units, distributed power: 4 ES44DC's pulling, and 2 Dash-9's pushing, all in run 8. Whole house smelled like diesel for a couple of hours!Fact is, there is no way to discern which path a train will take, so you really have to be watchful. If only there were some way of knowing the routes trains travel; maybe some sort of marks on the ground, like twin iron bars running along the paths trains take. You could look for trains when you encounter the iron bars on the ground, and avoid these sorts of collisions. But such a measure would be extremely expensive. And how would one enforce a rule keeping the trains on those paths?A big hole in homeland security is railway engineer screening and hijacking prevention. There is nothing to stop a rogue engineer, or an ISIS terrorist, from driving a train into the Pentagon, the White House or the Statue of Liberty, and our government has done fuck-all to prevent it

You're an odd one.

UP SDP35 1401, North Platte, NE RESCAN
A trip to Union Pacific's huge North Platte facilities back in the seventies was always one of high anticipation. The UP was living large, ordering power like it was Christmas and Uncle Warren owned them instead of the BNSF and wanted his favorite nephews to have a very merry Christmas. Big power from the major builders was to be found everywhere out there, and it seemed like nobody cared if you camped out in the middle of the yard trying to shoot every roll of Kodachrome ever made. There seemed to be one exception and here's an example of it. UP ordered only ten SDP35, the 1400 to 1409. We see the 1401 dragging some BN power, which appears to belong to the Colorado & Southern. Supposedly, the UP didn't care for the SDP's performance on their passenger trains, so the E's that these 35's were supposed to replace kept on doing what they had been doing so well and beautifully, thank God. And the UP had ten engines that they really didn't know what to do with. August 6, 1977
