Choosing the right kennels or cattery for your pet?

Sometimes we need to look for a boarding kennel or cattery for our best friends. Take time to research your preferred option to ensure that you and your pet are happy during their stay.

Always go and visit the kennels or cattery to ensure that the premises are clean and well cared for, chat to the staff about how much and what type of exercise your dog will receive, what 1-2-1 time they have with the animals in their care, find out if they have CCTV or other security solutions, what out of hours care is available and discuss your pets diet and medication.

Reputable establishments will be only too happy to talk through any worries you might have.  Also, take a look at their social media pages and online reviews.

Preparing you & your dog for a stay in boarding kennels

For many dog owners the thought of leaving their best friend in boarding kennels is very upsetting. We worry about how homesick they will be, will they settle, are they eating, are they happy, the list is endless. 

Most of the time dogs enjoy their kennel visits as they get to socialise with other dogs and make new friends. For dogs that are normally left at home during the day for long periods of time, there is often more for them to see and lots of interesting things happening around them to keep them occupied. 

Before you drop your dog off make the routine as normal as possible and on the way to the kennels go for a good long walk, having a sleep soon after arrival will help your pet settle in better.

If you are going to be leaving your dog in kennels for the first time then a visit before or an overnight stay will help to prepare your dog for his holiday.  

When you get to the kennel make your goodbyes quick and positive, try not to get upset until you get back in the car. You want your dog to be relaxed as you leave.

Pack some of your dogs favourite and familiar things like his bed and toys. Ensure the kennels know about his feeding requirements and if required take their food and treats.
