Disney Europe Animation Greenlights “The Sunnyridge 3” At Annecy Film Festival

At the Annecy Animation International Film Festival, Disney revealed details and a first look on a brand new animated series for Disney+ called “The Sunnyridge 3”, which is been created by Stevie Gee and Essy May. 

“The Sunnyridge 3,” follows trio of lifelong best friends investigate strange goings-on in a uniquely bizarre shopping center on the fringes of suburban London. Rose, Jeru and Wayne practically grew upat the Sunnyridge Mall, but this summer, the weirdness has gone to a whole new level. With their imaginations running wild, they will chase down any conspiracy theory no matter where it leads.

Could it be werewolves, hauntings or an ancient curse? Robots, aliens or renegade AI? The trio will discover that the truth is always stranger than fiction in this unpredictable genre-bending mashup created by British team Stevie Gee and Essie May.

MGM+ is returning to Beacon 23.

The premium cable network formerly known as Epix has officially picked up a second season of the sci-fi drama series starring Stephan James and Lena Headey.

The news comes as MGM+ just wrapped the first season of the drama from creator Zak Penn and aired a teaser for the second season of Beacon 23 (watch it below). Season two of the series, which was originally developed for Spectrum Originals and was poised to have a second window on AMC before the former bailed on originals, was already completed as filming on both cycles of the show was done back-to-back.

“The creative team behind Beacon 23 has masterfully brought Hugh Howey’s best-selling book to life, and we’re excited for fans to continue this journey into Beacon 23’s universe of suspense, emotion and unforeseen twists,” said Michael Wright, head of MGM+.

Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead) and Joy Blake (The Passage) serve as showrunners on season two, which will see James return alongside Natasha Mumba and Ellen Wong. Boat Rocker is the studio on the drama, with exec producers including Mazzara, Blake, David Fortier, Ivan Schneeberg, James Middleton, Nick Nantell, Katie O’Connell Marsh, Liz Varner and leading man James.

“We’re thrilled that Beacon 23 has found a loyal audience on MGM+ and look forward to sharing more episodes with fans in 2024,” said Fortier and Schneeberg, co-executive chairmen at Boat Rocker Media and co-chairmen of Boat Rocker Studios. “Thank you to our dedicated creative partners, the wonderful team at MGM+, and the talented cast and crew for helping deliver what is sure to be an unforgettable season of television.” 

Season one of the drama followed Aster (Game of Thrones grad Headey), a government agent, and Halan (James), a stoic ex-military man, whose fates became entangled after they found themselves trapped together inside one of many Beacons that served as a lighthouse for intergalactic travelers. Here’s how MGM+ describes season two: “Beacon 23 is now little more than a prison with Aleph onboard, and The Artifact provides more questions than answers. Without a clear path forward, the inhabitants of Beacon 23 must rely on each other, but their conflicting agendas may get in the way.”

“Beacon 23’s season two ups the game: more action, more mysteries, more twists and exciting new characters. It’s a thrill ride. I can’t wait for the audience to see it,” Mazzara said. Added Blake: “I’m so grateful to MGM+ for continuing the story of Beacon 23. What an incredible opportunity for us to tell the stories of such unexpected characters whose lives are inextricably linked by a place that few understand, and none can ever leave.”

At MGM+, Beacon 23 joins a scripted roster that also includes Godfather of Harlem, From, Billy the Kid, The Winter King and A Spy Among Friends, among others.

‘Christopher Robin’ R-Rated Hybrid Series in the Works From Boat Rocker, Bay Mills Studios (EXCLUSIVE)

An R-rated live-action/animation hybrid series about Winnie-the-Pooh character Christopher Robin is in development from Boat Rocker Studios and Shamier Anderson and Stephan James’ Bay Mills Studios, Variety has learned exclusively.

"[...] Inspired by the Elvis flick King Creole, the Kid Creole name was a suave pseudonym within a pseudonym. Darnell’s friend and collaborator Vivien Goldman described him in the Guardian as “an experienced juggler of self-created personas.” The Kid character was a musical trickster who could charm your woman with his poetics and promises while stealing the milk out of your coffee.  He was a traveling man looking for fun and adventures before his boat set out to sea. Off the Coast of Me drew heavily on tropical music influences. The album included standout tracks including the erectile dysfunction anthem “Mr. Softee,” the sunny mid-tempoed “Yolanda,” and the title track’s lo-fi jungle jive.

British journalist Paul Lester wrote in the Guardian that “the LP was greeted like the second coming by a U.K. music press weary of dour post-punk.” “It was reviewed like Sgt. Pepper,” Darnell told Lester in 2011. [...]

Another key member of Kid Creole was sidekick and arranger Andy Hernandez. Giving himself the stage name Coati Mundi, after a playful Latin American ring-tailed mammal, he was the band’s musical director and comic foil onstage, what Andy Schwartz, the former owner and editor of New York Rocker, called the “group’s secret weapon. You can never discount the influence and excitement generated at a show by a person like that.”

An important but usually unsung element of the group was Darnell’s taskmaster wife Adriana Kaegi, a Swiss-born musician who was in charge of the Coconuts side of things. More than simple background singers, the Coconuts were inspired by ’50s girl groups, but with the attitude of punk women. They not only supplied the oohhs and aahhs, but also served as a blond-haired Greek chorus that had no problem putting macho man Creole in his place. Darnell and Coati held auditions in a rehearsal studio named Daily Planet in Manhattan. “We needed versatile musicians,” Darnell said, “including a horn section, who could play all styles — pop, R&B, funk, jazz, salsa and calypso. It wasn’t easy.”"

Beacon 23 will finally see the light of day this year.

Almost three years after being picked up by Spectrum Originals, MGM+ has stepped in to provide a home for the Lena Headey drama series.

The series will debut on Sunday, November 12, on MGM+ at 9:00 p.m. EST/PST with the first two of eight episodes.

Zak Penn (Ready Player One, Free Guy) created the series and executive produced along with Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead, The Shield).

"Beacon 23 takes place in the farthest reaches of the Milky Way and follows Aster (Lena Headey), a government agent, and Halan (Stephan James), a stoic ex-military man, whose fates become entangled after they find themselves trapped together inside one of many Beacons that serve as a lighthouse for intergalactic travelers," according to the logline.

"Every Beacon is run by one highly trained human and a specialized Artificial Intelligence. Aster mysteriously finds her way to the lonely Beacon-keeper Halan, and a tense battle of wills unfolds."
