Why is it that the energy which pushes or pulls another thing in Star Trek is called a "Tractor" beam? Everything else on the ship is referred to in nautical terms like bridge, port, starboard, aft, brig, etc. I mean, they fire "torpedoes" instead of missles. Why would the beam be based off of a terrestrial vehicle?
I can hear you saying, "an author way back called it an 'attractor' beam, and this is just the short way of saying it." Yeah, but back then, the beams would only PULL. Now they can repel, shear, compress, shake or otherwise damage a host of external objects in cool ways. The name needs to be updated.
