“Real Love” is a song of romantic love. But former Old Crow Medicine Show man Willie Watson also makes clear his love of music, with allusions to Woody Guthrie, Little Richard and others in the lyrics.
It’s a country ballad with high-powered players, including Punch Brother Paul Kowert on bass, former Punch Brother Gabe Witcher on piano, Benmont Tench on organ and Sami Braman on fiddle, helping to fashion the music. The track announces Watson’s forthcoming self-titled LP, produced by Witcher and Milk Carton Kid Kenneth Pattengale and due Sept. 13.
With six verses - the title appended to two of them - and no chorus, “Real Love” is Dylanesque in its construction. It’s a little long as it approaches six minutes, but, seeing as it’s a lead single, a radio edit might soon address that.
George Harrison joined Bob Dylan and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers onstage for a song in London on October 17, 1987.
“George and Jeff [Lynne] came by backstage. George walked up to me and I said hi, and he did one of those things where instead of shaking hands he took my hand in both his hands, looked me right in the eye and goes, ‘Bless you.’ I remember thinking, ‘Wow, this is a heavy cat.’ It was a really sweet gesture and I felt a connection there.
So anyway, we’re up onstage playing, and he’s standing on the side of the stage in the shadows, and we got to the encore. We were doing ‘Rainy Day Women,’ and I looked over and I motioned, ‘Come on out and play.’ I could see he was kind of acting shy and I said, ‘No, come on.’ He grabbed a guitar and played with us, and after that he and I just became friends. We had a really empathetic relationship. That night changed my life.” - Mike Campbell, Uncut, June 2012
George Harrison: “Like, some people are very good at jamming, just jumping onstage and playing, but… I’ve always found it very difficult. I found I was very inhibited, maybe because The Beatles were such a big thing that, you know, it made me frightened… when you go to some place, you know, with an audience, everybody just expects magic when you play, and I can’t produce that. […] [I practice] a little. I use the guitar mainly just [to] write some songs. But, um, last Saturday night, some — they just pushed me on stage at a Bob Dylan concert. And they keep saying, ‘Come on, go on, go on, and here’s a guitar for you.’ And I just get so nervous and I think, if I was in the audience, I don’t wanna see me, I wanna see Bob Dylan. So I get real nervous. But I went on and we did a song.”
Q: “What was the reaction from the audience?”
GH: “I, I don’t know. I was just so nervous, I was just worried about what Bob Dylan was thinking that I didn’t notice the audience.” - Swedish interview, late 1987 (x)

Bob Dylan made a surprise appearance at Farm Aid on Saturday night, performing three songs with three members of Tom Petty's Heartbreakers. Dylan made the surprise appearance at Farm Aid 2023 in Noblesville, Indiana. He played guitar and was joined by Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, and Steve Ferrone for a performance of three songs from 1965: "Maggie's Farm," "Positively 4th Street," and "Ballad of a Thin Man." Dylan performed on the Farm Aid stage for the first time since the inaugural event in 1985. Dylan is credited with inspiring Willie Nelson to launch Farm Aid. During a 1985 performance at Live Aid, Dylan wondered whether a similar event could be put to support American farmers.

Song Review: Mike Campbell & the Dirty Knobs feat. Graham Nash - “Dare to Dream”
Mike Campbell repurposed music from “You Got Lucky,” stitched together a bunch of clichés, borrowed a line from Bob Dylan and a voice from Tom Petty, recruited Graham Nash to sing backgrounds and titled the result “Dare to Dream.”
You burned a bridge or two, didn’t you, my love/you made some sacrifices, but no one likes it that rough/yeah, I know that it’s been hard lately/but that’s all over now, baby/these are the best of times/this is the good life/and all you dare to dream, Campbell sings with Nash coming in at the end.
The the slow-rolling, guitar-based track announces the June 14 arrival of Mike Campbell & the Dirty Knobs’ Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits. In addition to the underutilized Nash - who, despite the billing is far from featured - the LP sports cameos from Lucinda Williams and Chris Stapleton alongside Campbell’s former Heartbreakers bandmate Benmont Tench.

“I have a great photo somewhere - it was my birthday [20 October 1987], and George [Harrison] brought a little cake to my dressing room. In the photo, there is me with George and Jeff Lynne, Roger McGuinn, Bob Dylan [, Benmonth Tench] and Mike Campbell - all of my favorite people right there, and it was so sweet.” - Tom Petty, Rolling Stone, 17 January 2002
“It was funny - that first night we were in London, when we had that great time, a hurricane hit. In London. Completely unannounced and unpredicted by the weather bureau. I always thought that [hurricane] had something to do with changing my life. This literal hurricane.
The Hindus think that when you meet someone and you feel really close to them immediately, that maybe you knew them in a past life. And that was how it was with George. We met each other and instantly became really close. Instantly we became very close. And I remember him saying to me, ‘You know, I’m not going to let you out of my life now.’ And it wasn’t about The Beatles or anything like that. We really got along well. And shared a sense of humor. And we became close friends.” - Tom Petty, Conversations With Tom Petty (x)
